SUMMARY:Stop de noodwet! - petitie
DESCRIPTION:Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Judith Uitermark\, hou je aan de wet en stop de noodwet! \nDe voorgestelde noodwet voor strengere asielmaatregelen is een ondemocratische stap die onze rechtsstaat ondermijnt en de opvangcrisis verergert. Het buitenspel zetten van de Tweede Kamer is niets anders dan een teken van onmacht en mogen we niet accepteren. Bovendien zorgen de voorgestelde maatregelen ervoor dat de problemen in Ter Apel en andere opvanglocaties nog groter worden. Het buitenspel zetten van de Tweede Kamer is een gevaarlijke en autoritaire stap. De kans is groot dat er met deze noodwet verregaande maatregelen worden genomen\, waar de kamer niet mee instemt. Het kabinet weet dit en houdt daarom vast aan deze keuze. De voorgestelde maatregelen maken de problemen bovendien alleen maar groter. We zien dat er door jarenlange bezuinigingen op het COA en IND een verstopte asielketen is ontstaan. Al jaren proberen zij en gemeenten met crisisoplossingen mensen op de vlucht onder te brengen. Maar dit kan niet zonder duurzame en structurele oplossingen\, zoals de spreidingswet. \nHet uitroepen van een asielcrisis is onderdeel van het Playbook van Extreemrechts. Een strategie geïnspireerd op landen zoals de VS\, Polen en Hongarije\, waarbij de rechtsstaat wordt afgebroken en de vrijheid beperkt. Om te voorkomen dat we dit gevaarlijke pad inslaan\, moeten we nu dit kabinet een halt toe roepen en voorkomen dat ze deze gevaarlijke maatregelen kunnen nemen. In de politiek is er veel ophef geweest over de mogelijke noodwet. Ook coalitiepartij NSC heeft aangegeven dat het buitenspel zetten van de Tweede Kamer niet zomaar kan. Tegelijkertijd zijn er politieke partijen die wél via een spoedwet dezelfde maatregelen zouden willen doorvoeren. Ook hiermee lossen we de problemen niet op\, maar vergeren we die alleen maar. Spreek je daarom uit voor duurzame en rechtvaardige oplossingen. Voor menswaardige opvang van mensen op de vlucht en eerlijke procedures. Alleen zo kunnen we weer vooruit. \nUPDATE: Op vrijdag 11 oktober 2024 stuurden Here to Support\, DeGoedeZaak\, MiGreat\, New Women Connectors\, STIL Utrecht\, SAWA Collective & Stichting Gast een sommatiebrief naar Minister Faber: wanneer de noodwet wordt uitgeroepen\, wil deze coalitie juridische stappen zetten. Met deze coalitie van aanklagers laten zij een sterk geluid horen naar het kabinet\, en naar de samenleving dat er een hele grote groep mensen voor een humaan migratiebeleid is en zich verenigt tegen het huidige kabinet. Het moet ook helder zijn: vanuit de samenleving zullen zij elke millimeter van de rechtsstaat en humaan beleid richting mensen op de vlucht beschermen en bevechten. \nLinks:\nStop de noodwet! \nWij waarschuwen het kabinet: wij staan klaar om een kortgeding aan te spannen!

DESCRIPTION:Equal Pay Day\, celebrated on 18 September\, represents the longstanding efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value. \nIt further builds on the United Nations’ commitment to human rights and against all forms of discrimination\, including discrimination against women and girls. Across all regions\, women are paid less than men\, with the gender pay gap estimated at around 20 per cent globally. Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls continue to be held back owing to the persistence of historical and structural unequal power relations between women and men\, poverty and inequalities and disadvantages in access to resources and opportunities that limit women’s and girls’ capabilities. Progress on narrowing that gap has been slow. While equal pay for men and women has been widely endorsed\, applying it in practice has been difficult. In order to ensure that no one is left behind\, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address the need to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. \nFurthermore\, the SDGs promote decent work and economic growth by seeking full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men\, including for young people and persons with disabilities\, and equal pay for work of equal value. Mainstreaming of a gender perspective is crucial in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Achieving equal pay is an important milestone for human rights and gender equality. It takes the effort of the entire world community and more work remains to be done. The United Nations\, including UN Women and the International Labour Organization (ILO) invites Members states and civil society\, women’s and community-based organizations and feminist groups\, as well as businesses and workers’ and employers’ organizations\, to promote equal pay for work of equal value and the economic empowerment of women and girls. Ingrained inequalities cause the gender pay gap. Women\, especially migrant women\, are overrepresented in the informal sector\, leading to low-paying\, unsafe working conditions without social benefits. \nWomen also perform three more hours of daily care work than men\, including household tasks and caring for children and the elderly. The motherhood penalty exacerbates pay inequity\, with working mothers facing lower wages\, particularly as the number of children they have increased. Gender stereotypes\, discriminatory hiring practices\, and promotion decisions also contribute to pay inequalities. The fight for equal pay and pay equity is urgent as income inequality harms women the most. In the United States\, Black women earn only 63.7 cents\, Native women 59 cents\, and Latinas 57 cents for every dollar that white men earn. It is important to address underpaid and undervalued jobs in the care sector\, where women make up 67% of workers. The Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC) is led by the ILO\, UN Women\, and OECD. The Coalition’s goal is to achieve equal pay for women and men everywhere. By bringing together a diverse set of actors with different areas of focus and expertise\, EPIC supports governments\, employers\, workers\, and their organizations to make concrete and coordinated progress towards this goal. The values of freedom\, respect for human rights and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage are essential elements of democracy. \nIn turn\, democracy provides the natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights. These values are embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and further developed in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights\, which enshrines a host of political rights and civil liberties underpinning meaningful democracies. The link between democracy and human rights is captured in article 21(3) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, which states: \n“The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.” \nThe rights enshrined in the International Covenant on Economic\, Social and Cultural Rights and subsequent human rights instruments covering group rights (e.g.indigenous peoples\, minorities\, people with disabilities) are equally essential for democracy as they ensure an equitable distribution of wealth\, and equality and equity in respect of access to civil and political rights. \n2023 Theme: Empowering the next generation. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP or DOTROIP) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday\, September 13\, 2007\, by a majority of 144 states in favour\, 4 votes against\, and 11 abstentions. \nThe groundwork toward this declaration began in 1923 and 1925 with the works of Haudenosaunee Chief Deskaheh and Māori T.W. Ratana\, who attempted to bring issues of Canada and New Zealand’s failure to uphold treaties to the League of Nations\, United Nations’ precursor. In May 2016\, Canada officially removed its objector status to UNDRIP\, almost a decade after it was adopted by the General Assembly. By now the other three objectors have\, to varying degrees\, also turned their votes. \nAs a General Assembly Declaration\, UNDRIP is not a legally binding instrument under international law. According to a UN press release it does “represent the dynamic development of international legal norms and it reflects the commitment of the UN’s member states to move in certain directions”; the UN describes it as setting “an important standard for the treatment of indigenous peoples that will undoubtedly be a significant tool toward eliminating human rights violations against the planet’s 370 million indigenous people\, and assisting them in combating discrimination and marginalisation.” \nUNDRIP codifies “Indigenous historical grievances\, contemporary challenges and socio-economic\, political and cultural aspirations” and is the “culmination of generations-long efforts by Indigenous organizations to get international attention\, to secure recognition for their aspirations\, and to generate support for their political agendas.” Canada Research Chair and faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan Ken Coates argues that UNDRIP resonates powerfully with Indigenous peoples\, while national governments have not yet fully understood its impact. \nLinks:\nUnited Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

SUMMARY:Steve Biko – sterfdag (1977) 2024
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Bantu (Steve) Biko (Koning Willemstad\, 18 december 1946 – Pretoria\, 12 september 1977) was een voorvechter van de burgerrechten in Zuid-Afrika. \nTussen augustus 1975 en september 1977 werd Biko viermaal door het apartheidsregime opgepakt en langdurig ondervraagd. Op 21 augustus 1977 werd hij opgesloten in Port Elizabeth. Hier werd hij telkens voor verhoor meegenomen naar het hoofdbureau van de politie. Op 7 september constateerden artsen verwondingen aan zijn hoofd. Neurologische complicaties negeerden zij. Vijf dagen later verloor Biko het bewustzijn. De aanwezige arts adviseerde ziekenhuisopname\, waarop Biko naakt in de achterbak van een Land Rover naar Pretoria werd getransporteerd. De 1200 km lange rit duurde 12 uur. Enkele uren na aankomst in de Pretoria Central Prison overleed hij\, 30 jaar oud en alleen liggend op de vloer van zijn cel. De lijkschouwing wees uit dat hij was gestorven aan ernstig hersenletsel en inwendige kneuzingen. Sinds maart 1976 was hij de negentiende gevangene\, die onder verdachte omstandigheden was overleden. Bij zijn begrafenis waren ongeveer 15.000 mensen aanwezig onder wie diplomaten uit 12 westerse landen. \nLinks:\nSteve Biko Foundation

DESCRIPTION:It is illegal to buy or sell an organ anywhere in the world\, with the exception of Iran\, nevertheless\, estimates suggest that around 10% of organs for transplantation come from illegal sources. \nMost cases\, however\, go unreported\, so the true number is likely to be much higher. Several countries\, including Pakistan\, Egypt\, Bangladesh\, India\, Turkey\, the Philippines and China\, have been identified as centres of organ trafficking\, but the trade in organs is a transnational operation. In its 2018 Global Report for Trafficking in Persons\, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime identified more than 700 cases of organ trafficking\, the majority in the Middle East and north Africa. A 2021 Interpol report claimed that organ trafficking was of particular concern in north and west Africa\, “where impoverished communities and displaced populations are at greater risk of exploitation”. According to the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT)\, only 10% of the global demand for transplants is met each year. Increased demand for kidney transplants\, in particular\, has been exacerbated by a shortage of altruistic donations and limited access to transplant services. This has led to an increased dependence on criminal networks that obtain organs from vulnerable individuals. There is a black market for organs including kidneys\, corneas and liver lobes. Rising demand for kidneys is partly a result of the spread of so-called diseases of affluence – diabetes\, hypertension\, obesity – and the subsequent rise in kidney failure. According to the charity Kidney Care\, in the UK\, the waiting list for a kidney transplant has increased dramatically since the pandemic. Consequently\, more people are travelling overseas for transplant surgery. DESCRIPTION:Er wordt gestaakt in de week voor Prinsjesdag voor het behoud en verbetering van de Regeling voor Vervroegde Uittreding (RVU) voor werknemers in zware beroepen\, de huidige zwaarwerk-regeling stopt in 2025. \nOp maandag 9 september 2024 leggen schoonmakers uit heel Nederland het werk neer en verzamelen zij zich op Schiphol om te staken. Met deze actie eisen zij dat de politiek zorgt voor een regeling waarmee schoonmakers en andere mensen in zware beroepen eerder kunnen stoppen met werken. Het is voor het eerst in tien jaar dat er een landelijke staking plaatsvindt van schoonmakers. Terwijl Nederlanders steeds langer moeten werken\, vaak tot minimaal 67 jaar\, is dit voor mensen in zware beroepen – zoals schoonmakers – niet vol te houden. Veel schoonmakers beginnen al jong met werken en kunnen soms wel 50 jaar of langer moeten doorwerken voordat ze met pensioen kunnen. \nOp 10\, 11 en 12 september 2024 zijn er acties in het Stads- en Streekvervoer en bij de Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Nu duidelijk is welke partijen het kabinet gaan vormen\, laat ook de Openbaar Vervoer (OV) – sector van zich horen. De OV-werknemers willen dat het nieuwe kabinet met goede plannen komt\, zodat werknemers eerder kunnen stoppen met zwaar werk. Er is een einde gekomen aan het geduld van het OV-personeel. Ook zij eisen een betere regeling als het gaat om mensen met zwaar werk. Die moeten eerder met pensioen kunnen\, vinden de werknemers en FNV. De sector is zich bewust van het feit dat de acties tot overlast voor de reizigers zal leiden. Dat betreuren de OV-werknemers\, maar ze rekenen ook op begrip. DESCRIPTION:Enforced disappearance has frequently been used as a strategy to spread terror within the society\, the feeling of insecurity generated by this practice is not limited to the close relatives of the disappeared\, but also affects their communities and society as a whole. \nEnforced disappearance has become a global problem and is not restricted to a specific region of the world. Once largely the product of military dictatorships\, enforced disappearances can nowadays be perpetrated in complex situations of internal conflict\, especially as a means of political repression of opponents. Of particular concern are: \n\n    the ongoing harassment of human rights defenders\, relatives of victims\, witnesses and legal counsel dealing with cases of enforced disappearance;\n    the use by States of counter-terrorist activities as an excuse for breaching their obligations;\n    and the still widespread impunity for enforced disappearance.\n\nSpecial attention must also be paid to specific groups of especially vulnerable people\, like children and people with disabilities. \nOn 21 December 2010\, by its resolution 65/209 the UN General Assembly expressed its deep concern about the increase in enforced or involuntary disappearances in various regions of the world\, including arrest\, detention and abduction\, when these are part of or amount to enforced disappearances\, and by the growing number of reports concerning harassment\, ill-treatment and intimidation of witnesses of disappearances or relatives of persons who have disappeared. DESCRIPTION:International Youth Day (IYD) is an awareness day designated by the United Nations\, the purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. \nIYD is observed annually on August 12. It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. During IYD\, concerts\, workshops\, cultural events\, and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organizations take place around the world. The World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth adopted a resolution to proclaim August 12 as International Youth Day at its first session in Lisbon\, Portugal\, from 8 to 12 August 1998. The recommendation was later endorsed by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 17\, 1999\, with the adoption of Resolution 54/120. \n2024 IYD Theme: ‘From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development‘. Digitalization is transforming our world\, offering unprecedented opportunities to accelerate sustainable development. Digital technologies such as mobile devices\, services\, and artificial intelligence are instrumental in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data generated from digital interactions supports evidence-based decision-making. With profound impact across economic\, social and environmental dimensions\, digital technologies and data contribute to at least 70 per cent of the 169 SDG targets while potentially reducing the cost of achieving these goals by up to USD 55 trillion. Young people are leading the charge in digital adoption and innovation\, with three-quarters of those aged 15 to 24 using the internet in 2022\, a rate higher than other age groups. However\, disparities persist\, particularly in low-income countries and among young women\, who often have less access to the internet and digital skills compared to their male counterparts. While there is an urgent need to enhance digital inclusion\, youth are largely recognized as “digital natives\,” using technology to drive change and create solutions. DESCRIPTION:The UN Human Rights Office published a report on arbitrary\, prolonged and incommunicado detention by Israeli authorities\, affecting thousands of Palestinians from 7 October 2023 until 30 June 2024. \nThe report also covers allegations of torture and other forms of cruel\, inhuman and degrading treatment\, including sexual abuse of women and men. Since 7 October\, thousands of Palestinians – including medical staff\, patients and residents fleeing the conflict\, as well as captured fighters – have been taken from Gaza to Israel\, usually shackled and blindfolded. Thousands more have been detained in the West Bank and Israel. They have generally been held in secret\, without being given a reason for their detention\, access to a lawyer or effective judicial review\, the report states. At least 53 Palestinian detainees are known to have died in Israeli military facilities and prisons since the horrific attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups against Israeli civilians on 7 October. \nThe staggering number of men\, women\, children\, doctors\, journalists and human rights defenders detained since 7 October\, most of them without charge or trial and held in deplorable conditions\, along with reports of ill-treatment and torture and violation of due process guarantees\, raises serious concerns regarding the arbitrariness and the fundamentally punitive nature of such arrests and detention\, said UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk. In Gaza\, mostly men and adolescent boys have been detained. Many have been taken into custody while sheltering in schools\, hospitals and residential buildings\, or at checkpoints during their displacement from north to south\, the report finds. The Israeli military does not usually explain publicly the basis for taking Palestinians into custody in Gaza\, although it has in some cases alleged affiliation with Palestinian armed groups or their political wings. Israel has also not provided information regarding the fate or whereabouts of many of those detained\, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been denied access to facilities where they are held. \nConditions in military-run detention facilities appear worse\, the report states\, adding children were among those held\, in some cases jointly with adults. Detainees said they were held in cage-like facilities\, stripped naked for prolonged periods\, wearing only diapers. Their testimonies told of prolonged blindfolding\, deprivation of food\, sleep and water\, and being subjected to electric shocks and being burnt with cigarettes. Some detainees said dogs were released on them\, and others said they were subjected to waterboarding\, or that their hands were tied and they were suspended from the ceiling. Some women and men also spoke of sexual and gender-based violence. Accounts of hostages taken by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups last October also described appalling conditions of captivity\, including lack of food\, water and poor sanitary conditions\, and lack of fresh air and sunlight. \nSome described being beaten while being taken into Gaza\, or seeing other hostages being beaten while in captivity; receiving surgery or stitches without anaesthetic. There were also reports of sexual and gender-based violence in captivity. In addition\, the report criticises the Palestinian Authority for continuing to carry out arbitrary detention and torture or other ill-treatment in the West Bank\, reportedly principally to suppress criticism and political opposition. The High Commissioner reiterated his call for the immediate release of all hostages still held in Gaza. All Palestinians arbitrarily detained by Israel must be released. UNODC\, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto\, assists States in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (Trafficking in Persons Protocol). The Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment\, transportation\, transfer\, harbouring or receipt of persons\, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion\, of abduction\, of fraud\, of deception\, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person\, for the purpose of exploitation. DESCRIPTION:How reliable are the death tolls from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza? \nIt has been one of the enduring questions of the war\, with the MoH producing the widely used figure of more than 38\,000 Palestinians killed to date. Israeli officials have repeatedly disputed the civilian toll – highlighting the MoH’s Hamas connections and publicly claiming its numbers are false. US President Joe Biden also initially said he had “no confidence” in the death tolls. In response\, the ministry has periodically released lists of names and IDs of Palestinians killed. In the largest and most in-depth public analysis of the MoH data yet\, Airwars used open source monitoring to independently identify nearly 3\,000 full names of civilian victims killed in the first 17 days of the war. Every name is listed below\, linked to individual reports detailing where and how they died. Where possible the reports include personal stories of lives lost. By comparing those victims’ names with the first list produced by the MoH\, this investigation found a high correlation between the official MoH data and what Palestinian civilians reported online – with 75% of publicly reported names also appearing on the MoH list. The research only relates to the initial weeks of the war – and evidence suggests the MoH figures have become less accurate as Gaza’s health infrastructure has been decimated by the war. Deze hoeveelheid is minder dan een derde van de aanbevolen 15 liter per persoon per dag als minimum in noodsituaties. Dit blijkt vandaag uit het nieuwe Oxfam-rapport Water War Crimes: Sinds het begin van de oorlog op 7 oktober 2023 vernietigen Israëlische militaire aanvallen elke drie dagen vijf locaties van de water- en sanitaire infrastructuur in Gaza. Sinds 26 mei 2024 is de waterproductie in Gaza met 84% gedaald als gevolg van de vernietiging van de waterinfrastructuur en invoerbeperkingen voor brandstof\, elektriciteit en reserveonderdelen voor water en sanitaire voorzieningen in Gaza. De externe leveringen van het Israëlische nationale waterbedrijf Mekorot aan Gaza daalden met 78%. Israël heeft 70% van alle rioolpompen en 100% van alle afvalwaterzuiveringsinstallaties vernietigd\, evenals de belangrijkste laboratoria voor het testen van de waterkwaliteit in Gaza. Ook heeft Israël de levering van watertestapparatuur door Oxfam naar Gaza ingeperkt. Gaza Stad is bijna al haar waterproductiecapaciteit verloren: 88% van de waterputten en 100% van de ontziltingsinstallaties zijn beschadigd of vernietigd. DESCRIPTION:According to the Italian Competition Authority\, in some cases the companies may have used supplies from laboratories employing workers who would receive inadequate wages and they would work hours in excess of the legal limits and in inadequate health and safety conditions\, in contrast to the boasted levels of production excellence. \nThe Italian Competition Authority\, also as a result of the activity carried out by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Court of Milan which has been widely published by the press\, has opened investigation proceedings against some companies in Armani Group (Giorgio Armani S.p.A. e G.A. Operations S.p.A.)\, and separate investigation proceedings against some companies in Dior Group (Christian Dior Couture S.A.\, Christian Dior Italia S.r.l. e Manufactures Dior S.r.l.) for possible unlawful conducts in the promotion and sale of clothes’ items and accessories\, in violation of the provisions of the Consumer Code. In both cases\, the companies may have issued untrue statements about their ethics and social responsibility\, in particular with regard to working conditions and compliance with the law by their suppliers. Moreover\, the companies emphasised craftsmanship and quality. However\, in order to make certain articles and clothing accessories the companies allegedly used supplies from workshops and factories employing workers who would receive inadequate wages. In addition\, such workers would work hours in excess of the legal limits and in inadequate health and safety conditions\, in contrast to the production excellence levels the companies pride themselves.
