DESCRIPTION:Between 2006 and 2024\, over 1\,700 journalists have been killed around the world\, with close to 9 out of 10 cases of these killings remaining judicially unresolved\, according to the UNESCO Observatory of Killed Journalists. \nImpunity leads to more killings and is often a symptom of worsening conflict and the breakdown of law and judicial systems. UNESCO is concerned that impunity damages whole societies by covering up serious human rights abuses\, corruption\, and crime. Governments\, civil society\, the media\, and everyone concerned to uphold the rule of law are being asked to join in the global efforts to end impunity. It is in recognition of the far-reaching consequences of impunity\, especially of crimes against journalists\, that the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/68/163 at its 68th session in 2013 which proclaimed 2 November as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’ (IDEI). The Resolution urged Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity. DESCRIPTION:Wereld Spina Bifida (Open Rug) en Hydrocefalus Dag is een jaarlijks op 25 oktober terugkerend evenement om bewustzijn te kweken rond Spina Bifida en Hydrocefalus en aandacht te vragen voor de rechten van mensen die met deze aandoeningen zijn geboren. \nSpina Bifida:\nEen open rug\, ook bekend met de medische term spina bifida\, is een ingewikkelde aandoening aan de neurale buis die ontstaat tijdens de embryonale ontwikkeling. Dit wordt een neuralebuisdefect genoemd. Anencefalie is een minder bekend voorbeeld van een neuralebuisdefect. Bij spina bifida sluiten de ruggenwervels niet goed rondom het ruggenmerg. Het komt voor bij 4\,5 op de 10.000 geboorten. Als eenmaal een kind is geboren met spina bifida\, of als een van de ouders spina bifida heeft\, dan is er een kans van 4% dat het eerstvolgende kind eveneens spina bifida heeft. Als ouders reeds twee kinderen met spina bifida hebben\, is de kans op een derde kind met deze aandoening 10%. In Zuidoost-Azië komt de afwijking minder vaak voor (2\,5 op de 10.000 geboorten). De benaming spina bifida is gegeven door de Nederlander Nicolaes Tulp in 1637 \nHydrocefalus:\nHydrocefalus\, ook wel waterhoofd\, is een aandoening waarbij in de ventrikels te veel hersenvocht aanwezig is en de ventrikels vergroot zijn. De overmaat aan hersenvocht oefent druk uit op de hersenen\, waardoor hersenfuncties kunnen worden aangetast. Volwassenen kunnen hierdoor last krijgen van hoofdpijn\, migraine\, dubbelzicht\, verminderd evenwicht\, incontinentie\, problemen met lopen\, persoonlijkheidsveranderingen of mentale retardatie. Bij baby’s kan de omvang van de schedel sterk toenemen. Overige symptomen die gepaard gaan met hydrocefalus zijn braken\, slaperigheid\, insulten en zinking van de ogen. Hydrocefalus kan aangeboren zijn\, maar het is ook mogelijk een hydrocefalus op te lopen. Onder de aangeboren afwijkingen die hydrocefalus kunnen veroorzaken\, vallen onder andere neuralebuisdefecten en vernauwing van het aquaduct van Sylvius. Ongeveer 1 à 2 op de 1.000 nieuwgeboren baby’s krijgt een waterhoofd. Hydrocefalus kan ook ontstaan als gevolg van hersenvliesontsteking\, hersentumoren\, traumatisch hersenletsel\, intraventriculaire bloedingen en subarachnoïdale bloedingen. Er bestaan drie soorten hydrocefalus: communicerend\, niet-communicerend en normaledrukhydrocefalie. DESCRIPTION:Rosa Louise Parks-McCauley (*04-02-1913 – +24-10-2005)\, beter bekend als Rosa Parks\, was een Amerikaans burgerrechtenactiviste. \nZe staat vooral bekend om het feit dat ze in 1955 weigerde haar zitplaats in een bus af te staan aan een blanke medepassagier. Martin Luther King kreeg lucht van de zaak\, en begon de “Montgomery bus boycot”\, waardoor het busbedrijf bijna failliet ging en uiteindelijk de scheiding van blanken en zwarten in haar bussen moest afschaffen. Dit leidde tot meer protesten tegen de segegratie. Intussen was de rechtszaak van Rosa Parks bij het United States Supreme Court beland\, die haar in het gelijk stelde en de scheiding tussen blanken en zwarten onconstitutioneel verklaarde. In 2004 bleek uit een medisch rapport dat ze leed aan dementie\, ze overleed uiteindelijk in haar slaap te Detroit. \nLinks:\nRosa Parks\, biografie

DESCRIPTION:Zaterdagmiddag 19 oktober 2024 zullen duizenden betogers dansend door Amsterdam trekken om op te komen voor het demonstratierecht. \nDit mensenrecht\, dat een fundament vormt voor elke democratie\, staat onder druk door de huidige regering\, die bovendien gezichtsbedekking tijdens demonstraties wil gaan verbieden. Als subversieve kritiek op dit voorstel organiseren de demonstranten een unieke ‘balaclava modeshow’ tijdens de mars. Recent hebben verschillende protesten in Nederland te maken gehad met onrechtmatig politieoptreden. Ook ADEV (Amsterdam Danst Ergens Voor)\, de organisatie achter de mars\, kreeg in 2022 te maken met repressie. Na 10 jaar vreedzaam demonstreren trad de politie bijzonder agressief op waarbij tientallen onschuldige demonstranten werden aangevallen en gearresteerd. Dit incident staat niet op zichzelf: Amnesty International bracht deze week een rapport uit over het demonstratierecht dat onder druk staat in Nederland. Een van de controversiële maatregelen die de regering onderzoekt\, is het verbieden van gezichtsbedekking tijdens demonstraties. \n\n\n\n\nADEV onderstreept het belang van anonimiteit voor mensen die niet zomaar deel kunnen nemen aan het publieke debat. “Met dit verbod criminaliseert de regering demonstranten en beperkt ze hun vrijheid van meningsuiting\,” aldus Mike Vermaak\, een van de organisatoren van ADEV. Als protest organiseert ADEV tijdens de mars een balaclava modeshow\, waarbij deelnemers worden aangemoedigd om kleurrijke en creatieve gezichtsbedekking te dragen. Verder zijn er meer dan 10 geluidswagens van de partij die net zoals elk jaar een route rijden dwars door de stad\, gevolgd door duizenden aanhangers. De subversieve parade van Amsterdam Danst Ergens Voor (ADEV) is een collectieve beweging van kraakpanden\, soundsystems en sympathisanten dat jaarlijks op de derde zaterdag van oktober door de Amsterdamse straten danst. DESCRIPTION:Na een jaar van genocide op het Palestijnse volk en de oorverdovende stilte vanuit onze Nederlandse overheid en publieke instituties\, is het tijd om samen te komen en te spreken over rechtvaardigheid en verzet en de anti-koloniale strijden wereldwijd. \nDeze avond wordt georganiseerd door de Rotterdam Palestina Coalitie en de Palestijnse Gemeenschap Nederland. De avond begint met een lezing door Nawal Mustafa\, die ons meeneemt in de geschiedenis en de hedendaagse realiteit van antikoloniale bewegingen. It even boosted productivity and efficiency in the workplace. Japan is known for its very hardworking culture. I mean\, they even have a term for literally working oneself to death – karoshi 🤯 The government wants to change that. It has launched a new campaign promoting flexible work hours arrangements\, shorter work time\, as well as overtime limits. While changing habits can be challenging in such a tough work culture\, it could bring many benefits. But first\, employers and employees need to open up to this change. In 2022\, Panasonic\, one of Japan’s largest companies\, introduced a four-day workweek option\, yet only about 150 out of 63\,000 employees decided to participate. If Japan is becoming more serious about a 4-day work week\, so should Europe. The ILO Decent Work Agenda is the balanced and integrated programmatic approach to pursue the objectives of full and productive employment and decent work for all at global\, regional\, national\, sectoral and local levels. DESCRIPTION:Kinderen\, gezinnen en huishoudens wachten vaak nog lang op actie vanuit Veilig Thuis. \nZe krijgen niet op tijd de hulp die nodig is om hun thuissituatie weer veilig te maken. Hierdoor leven zij te lang met een constante dreiging van huiselijk geweld of kindermishandeling. De lange wachttijd leidt tot angst\, onzekerheid en stress. Alleen bij acute onveiligheid wordt een melding meteen opgepakt door Veilig Thuis. Dit concludeert de Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Jeugd (IGJ). De inspectie voerde toezicht uit bij 3 van de 25 Veilig Thuis-organisaties en vroeg informatie op bij alle Veilig Thuis-organisaties. Het lukt Veilig Thuis-organisaties nog steeds nauwelijks om de taken waar wettelijke termijnen voor zijn op tijd uit te voeren. Een aantal Veilig Thuis-organisaties lukt dit zelfs minder goed dan vorig jaar. Alleen als Veilig Thuis na een eerste screening constateert dat sprake is van acute onveiligheid\, wordt een melding meteen opgepakt. Andere meldingen moeten wachten. Dit zijn ook meldingen over ernstige structurele mishandeling of verwaarlozing. Door het lange wachten is er een constante dreiging van huiselijk geweld of kindermishandeling. Ook stopt of vertraagt de hulpverlening voor kinderen\, gezinnen en huishoudens. DESCRIPTION:Blasphemy Day\, held each year on September 30\, also known as International Blasphemy Day or International Blasphemy Rights Day\, educates individuals and groups about blasphemy laws and defends freedom of expression\, especially the open criticism of religion which is criminalized in many countries. \nBlasphemy Day was introduced as a worldwide celebration by the Center for Inquiry in 2009. Events worldwide on the first annual Blasphemy Day in 2009 included an art exhibit in Washington\, D.C.\, and a free speech festival in Los Angeles. Blasphemy Rights Day is a day to show solidarity with those who challenge oppressive laws and social prohibitions against free expression\, to support the right to challenge prevailing religious beliefs without fear of violence\, arrest\, or persecution. Blasphemy Rights Day is observed every September 30 to commemorate the publishing of the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons\, which angered religious believers around the world\, many of whom expressed their disapproval with violent protests\, riots\, and in some cases\, murder. While many perceive “blasphemy” as offensive\, this event is not intended to ridicule and insult others. Rather\, it was created as a reaction against those who would seek to take away the right to satirize and criticize a particular set of beliefs given a privileged status over other beliefs. Observing International Blasphemy Rights Day is a way of showing opposition to any resolutions or laws\, binding or otherwise\, which discourage or inhibit freedom of speech of any kind. DESCRIPTION:Day for Universal Access to Information:\nThe Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly to be held on 28 September. \nInitially the day (commonly called the Access to Information Day) was designated by the UNESCO General Conference. It was inaugurated in November 2015 and was first held on 28 September 2016. The day had been recognised as International Right to Know Day since 2002 and was developed by international civil society advocates beginning in 2012. The UNESCO resolution creating the day was pushed by African civil society groups seeking greater information transparency. Currently only 17 African Union member states have adopted national right to information laws\, and groups like Open Government Partnership hope that the recognition of the right to information will “provide an important platform for all stakeholders at national level to discuss the adoption and effective implementation of national right to information laws in line with continental and international standards and obligations.” However\, African civil society groups like MISA Zimbabwe have noted that states like Zimbabwe which do have Right to Information laws still have a long way to go to ensure they improve governance. In 2016\, MISA Zimbabwe used Access to Information Day to criticise Zimbabwe’s poor information transparency provisions\, noting that\, “While Zimbabwe was one of the first African countries to adopt an access to information law in the form of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA)\, the law in question is a far cry from its purported import and impact.” \nRight To Know Day:\nThe decision to celebrate and promote 28 September as the International Right to Know Day was taken on the last day of a Freedom of Information litigation conference held 26-28 September 2002 in Sofia\, Bulgaria. \nRepresentatives of Freedom of Information (FOI) organizations from 15 countries took part – Albania\, Armenia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Bulgaria\, Georgia\, Hungary\, India\, Latvia\, Macedonia\, Mexico\, Moldova\, Rumania\, Slovakia\, South Africa\, and USA\, as well as representatives of international organizations active in the FOI field. On 28 September 2002\, the FOI activists established the International Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIAnet)\, Access to Information Programme (AIP) being its co-founder and active member. The members of the newly found FOIAnet agreed to collaborate in promotion of the individual right of access to information and open\, transparent governance and adopted a Memorandum setting forth the goals and activities of the network. Today\, the members of the FOIAnet are over 200 organizations and civil groups from around the globe which exchange knowledge and experience and undertake international initiatives for better freedom of information standards. \nFOI activists around the globe organize a variety of events and initiatives on 28 September to raise awareness on the right of information and to campaign for open\, democratic societies in which there is full citizen empowerment and participation in government. Conferences\, trainings\, competitions\, awards ceremonies\, rock and pop concerts\, theatre performances\, movies\, launch of info-requesting campaigns and new web sites\, focused publications\, etc. aim to further promote this fundamental human right and encourage citizens\, journalists and NGOs in their search for government held information. DESCRIPTION:Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Judith Uitermark\, hou je aan de wet en stop de noodwet! \nDe voorgestelde noodwet voor strengere asielmaatregelen is een ondemocratische stap die onze rechtsstaat ondermijnt en de opvangcrisis verergert. Het buitenspel zetten van de Tweede Kamer is niets anders dan een teken van onmacht en mogen we niet accepteren. Bovendien zorgen de voorgestelde maatregelen ervoor dat de problemen in Ter Apel en andere opvanglocaties nog groter worden. Het buitenspel zetten van de Tweede Kamer is een gevaarlijke en autoritaire stap. De kans is groot dat er met deze noodwet verregaande maatregelen worden genomen\, waar de kamer niet mee instemt. Het kabinet weet dit en houdt daarom vast aan deze keuze. De voorgestelde maatregelen maken de problemen bovendien alleen maar groter. We zien dat er door jarenlange bezuinigingen op het COA en IND een verstopte asielketen is ontstaan. Al jaren proberen zij en gemeenten met crisisoplossingen mensen op de vlucht onder te brengen. Maar dit kan niet zonder duurzame en structurele oplossingen\, zoals de spreidingswet. \nHet uitroepen van een asielcrisis is onderdeel van het Playbook van Extreemrechts. Een strategie geïnspireerd op landen zoals de VS\, Polen en Hongarije\, waarbij de rechtsstaat wordt afgebroken en de vrijheid beperkt. Om te voorkomen dat we dit gevaarlijke pad inslaan\, moeten we nu dit kabinet een halt toe roepen en voorkomen dat ze deze gevaarlijke maatregelen kunnen nemen. In de politiek is er veel ophef geweest over de mogelijke noodwet. Ook coalitiepartij NSC heeft aangegeven dat het buitenspel zetten van de Tweede Kamer niet zomaar kan. Tegelijkertijd zijn er politieke partijen die wél via een spoedwet dezelfde maatregelen zouden willen doorvoeren. Ook hiermee lossen we de problemen niet op\, maar vergeren we die alleen maar. Spreek je daarom uit voor duurzame en rechtvaardige oplossingen. Voor menswaardige opvang van mensen op de vlucht en eerlijke procedures. Alleen zo kunnen we weer vooruit. \nUPDATE: Op vrijdag 11 oktober 2024 stuurden Here to Support\, DeGoedeZaak\, MiGreat\, New Women Connectors\, STIL Utrecht\, SAWA Collective & Stichting Gast een sommatiebrief naar Minister Faber: wanneer de noodwet wordt uitgeroepen\, wil deze coalitie juridische stappen zetten. Met deze coalitie van aanklagers laten zij een sterk geluid horen naar het kabinet\, en naar de samenleving dat er een hele grote groep mensen voor een humaan migratiebeleid is en zich verenigt tegen het huidige kabinet. DESCRIPTION:Equal Pay Day\, celebrated on 18 September\, represents the longstanding efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value. \nIt further builds on the United Nations’ commitment to human rights and against all forms of discrimination\, including discrimination against women and girls. Across all regions\, women are paid less than men\, with the gender pay gap estimated at around 20 per cent globally. Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls continue to be held back owing to the persistence of historical and structural unequal power relations between women and men\, poverty and inequalities and disadvantages in access to resources and opportunities that limit women’s and girls’ capabilities. Progress on narrowing that gap has been slow. While equal pay for men and women has been widely endorsed\, applying it in practice has been difficult. In order to ensure that no one is left behind\, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address the need to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. \nFurthermore\, the SDGs promote decent work and economic growth by seeking full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men\, including for young people and persons with disabilities\, and equal pay for work of equal value. Mainstreaming of a gender perspective is crucial in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Achieving equal pay is an important milestone for human rights and gender equality. It takes the effort of the entire world community and more work remains to be done. The United Nations\, including UN Women and the International Labour Organization (ILO) invites Members states and civil society\, women’s and community-based organizations and feminist groups\, as well as businesses and workers’ and employers’ organizations\, to promote equal pay for work of equal value and the economic empowerment of women and girls. Ingrained inequalities cause the gender pay gap. Women\, especially migrant women\, are overrepresented in the informal sector\, leading to low-paying\, unsafe working conditions without social benefits. \nWomen also perform three more hours of daily care work than men\, including household tasks and caring for children and the elderly. The motherhood penalty exacerbates pay inequity\, with working mothers facing lower wages\, particularly as the number of children they have increased. Gender stereotypes\, discriminatory hiring practices\, and promotion decisions also contribute to pay inequalities. The fight for equal pay and pay equity is urgent as income inequality harms women the most. In the United States\, Black women earn only 63.7 cents\, Native women 59 cents\, and Latinas 57 cents for every dollar that white men earn. It is important to address underpaid and undervalued jobs in the care sector\, where women make up 67% of workers. The Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC) is led by the ILO\, UN Women\, and OECD. The Coalition’s goal is to achieve equal pay for women and men everywhere. By bringing together a diverse set of actors with different areas of focus and expertise\, EPIC supports governments\, employers\, workers\, and their organizations to make concrete and coordinated progress towards this goal. DESCRIPTION:The Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. \nDemocracy is as much a process as a goal\, and only with the full participation of and support by the international community\, national governing bodies\, civil society and individuals\, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone\, everywhere. The values of freedom\, respect for human rights and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage are essential elements of democracy. \nIn turn\, democracy provides the natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights. These values are embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and further developed in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights\, which enshrines a host of political rights and civil liberties underpinning meaningful democracies. The link between democracy and human rights is captured in article 21(3) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, which states: \n“The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.” \nThe rights enshrined in the International Covenant on Economic\, Social and Cultural Rights and subsequent human rights instruments covering group rights (e.g.indigenous peoples\, minorities\, people with disabilities) are equally essential for democracy as they ensure an equitable distribution of wealth\, and equality and equity in respect of access to civil and political rights. \n2023 Theme: Empowering the next generation.
