DESCRIPTION:The right to education is enshrined in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The declaration calls for free and compulsory elementary education. \nThe Convention on the Rights of the Child\, adopted in 1989\, goes further to stipulate that countries shall make higher education accessible to all. When it adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015\, the international community recognized that education is essential for the success of all 17 of its goals. Sustainable Development Goal 4\, in particular\, aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030. Education offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future. But about 265 million children and adolescents around the world do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school. SUMMARY:Day of the Endangered Lawyer 2026
DESCRIPTION:Ever since lawyers Symone Gaasbeek-Wielinga and Hans Gaasbeek went onto a fact finding mission in the Philippines in 1990 (lawyers are being intimidated\, threatened and even murdered because they aide their clients in politically sensitive cases) they have been active for their threatened colleagues all across the world. \nThe creation of this special international day is an international effort put together with like-minded colleagues. The first ever Day of the Endangered Lawyer was organized in 2009. Hans and Symone created the foundation Day of the Endangered Lawyer to strengthen the work. Together with AED and ELDH they created the Coalition for the Endangered Lawyer\, which comes together every year to choose the new country and to discuss the progress. The purpose of the Day of the Endangered Lawyer is a call for attention on that day to threatened human rights lawyers with special attention to one designated country. The course of action is to draw a centralized petition in as many cities as possible\, in and across Europe’s borders\, which will be offered to ambassadors\, consulates and other bodies of authority. The petition will call for attention to the problematic situation of endangered lawyers in that country. Another aim is to engage in a dialogue with the representatives of the government of the country. Kinderen durven niet meer naar school of buiten te spelen. To defy this trend\, governments that still value human rights\, alongside social movements\, civil society\, and international institutions\, need to form a strategic alliance to push back. To be fair\, the downward spiral predated Trump’s reelection. The democratic wave that began over 50 years ago has given way to what scholars term a “democratic recession.” Democracy is now back to 1985 levels according to some metrics\, with 72 percent of the world’s population now living under autocracy. Russia and China are less free today than 20 years ago. And so is the United States. Of course\, democracy is not a panacea for human rights violations; the US and other longtime democracies have their own histories of colonial crimes\, racism\, abusive justice systems\, and wartime atrocities. More recently\, authoritarian leaders have exploited public mistrust and anger to win elections and then dismantled the very institutions that brought them to power. Democratic institutions are crucial to represent the will of the people and keep power in check. Every year\, more than 400\,000 children and adolescents below 20\, are diagnosed with Childhood Cancer. The rate of survival depends on the region\, with 80% survival in most High Income Countries but as low as 20% only in Low and MIddle Income Countries. The Target Goal of the WHO Global Childhood Cancer Initiative is to eliminate all pain and suffering of children fighting cancer and achieve at least 60% survival for all children diagnosed with cancer around the world by 2030. This cumulative factual matrix reveals the intent of the Rapid Support Forces to destroy the Zaghawa and Fur communities in whole or in part. The conduct in El-Fasher is an aggravation of earlier patterns of mirror attacks against other non-Arab communities elsewhere in Sudan\, but on a far more lethal scale. Accountability of perpetrators\, including those who facilitate\, aid or abet these crimes\, remains imperative. It builds on the Philadelphia Declaration of 1944 and the Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work of 1998. The 2008 Declaration expresses the contemporary vision of the ILO’s mandate in the era of globalization. This landmark Declaration is a powerful reaffirmation of ILO values. It is the outcome of tripartite consultations that started in the wake of the Report of the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization. By adopting this text\, the representatives of governments\, employers’ and workers’ organizations from 182 member States emphasize the key role of our tripartite Organization in helping to achieve progress and social justice in the context of globalization. At the same time\, 2025 has witnessed a trend towards externalization of border management. The EU finances third countries to prevent people seeking protection to reach EU borders\, resulting in offshoring human rights violations. The result is an increase in pullbacks and a decrease in pushbacks on certain routes. In 2025\, the Libyan coast guard\, financially and logistically supported by the EU\, prevented 27\,116 people from reaching EU borders. Poland pushed back 14\,754 asylum seekers\, followed by Bulgaria whose authorities have executed 13\,568 pushbacks. DESCRIPTION:At a time when armed conflict has reached historic levels around the world\, journalist killings also reached an all-time high primarily due to the actions of one government: Israel was responsible for two-thirds of all journalist and media worker killings in 2025\, driving the total number killed worldwide last year to a record 129 — the highest ever number documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) since the organization started keeping records more than three decades ago.\, according to the report ‘Record 129 press members killed in 2025; Israel responsible for 2/3 of deaths‘. \nThis marks back-to-back record years for press fatalities due to Israel’s continued and unprecedented targeting of journalists and media workers. More than 60% of the 86 members of the press killed by Israeli fire in 2025 were Palestinians reporting from Gaza\, where human rights groups and U.N. experts agree a genocide is taking place. Over three-quarters of all press deaths in 2025 were in conflict settings. While the number of journalists and media workers killed in Ukraine and Sudan increased slightly in 2025 compared to the previous year\, to four and nine deaths in each country respectively\, the numbers were still very low compared to Israel\, which remains a significant exception. The rising number of journalist deaths globally is fueled by a persistent culture of impunity for attacks on the press: Very few transparent investigations have been conducted into the 47 cases* of targeted killings (classified as “Murder” in CPJ’s longstanding methodology) documented by CPJ in 2025 — the highest number of journalists deliberately killed for their work in the past decade — and no one has been held accountable in any of the cases. These killings of journalists violate international humanitarian law\, which stipulates that journalists are civilians and should never be deliberately targeted. \nThe continued failure of government leaders to protect the press or hold their attackers to account also lays the groundwork for more killings\, including in countries not at war. Journalists were killed in Mexico\, India\, and the Philippines in 2025\, all countries that have persistently failed to secure justice for journalists’ murders. DESCRIPTION:Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day celebrated by the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations\, the day aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all of the member countries of the UN. \nThe day was first celebrated on March 1\, 2014\, and was launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 27 February of that year with a major event in Beijing. In February 2017\, UNAIDS called on people to “make some noise around zero discrimination\, to speak up and prevent discrimination from standing in the way of achieving ambitions\, goals and dreams.” The day is particularly noted by organisations like UNAIDS that combat discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. “HIV related stigma and discrimination is pervasive and exists in almost every part of the world including our Liberia”\, according to Dr. Ivan F. Camanor\, Chairman of the National AIDS Commission of Liberia. The UN Development Programme also paid tribute in 2017 to LGBTI people with HIV/AIDS who face discrimination. Campaigners in India have used this day to speak out against laws making discrimination against the LGBTI community more likely\, especially during the previous campaign to repeal the law (Indian Penal Code\, s377) that used to criminalise homosexuality in that country\, before that law was overturned by the Indian Supreme Court in September 2018. In 2015\, Armenian Americans in California held a ‘die-in’ on Zero Discrimination Day to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide. \nIn 2026 is the theme ‘People first‘. \nLinks:\nZero Discrimination Day

Eis actie van Jetten!’ gestart\, daarmee vragen zij aandacht voor het lot van de Palestijnse gevangenen en eisen actie van de Nederlandse regering. \nIsraël houdt bijna 10.000 Palestijnen gevangen in een netwerk van martelkampen: gevangenen worden uitgehongerd\, geslagen\, verkracht met voorwerpen of door honden en medische zorg wordt onthouden wat leidt tot amputaties en soms de dood. Dit zijn geen incidenten maar is systematisch\, georganiseerd beleid. Gevangenissen staan onder leiding van de Israëlische minister Ben-Gvir. En zijn nieuwste plan\, het executeren van Palestijnse gevangenen\, staat op het punt om beleid te worden. Israël schendt het anti-martelverdrag. De vorige regering wist dit\, maar weigerde in actie te komen. Het nieuwe kabinet-Jetten schrijft in het regeerakkoord: ‘Nederland heeft de verantwoordelijkheid om het internationaal recht actief te bevorderen.’ Dat kan maar één ding betekenen: Israël moet aangepakt worden tot ze haar martelbeleid stopt\, en alle verantwoordelijken moeten worden vervolgd. Stop het wegkijken. Kabinet-Jetten\, houd je aan je belofte en maak het verschil! DESCRIPTION:Het is duidelijk: D66\, CDA en VVD gaan de zorg afbreken: meer dan 10 miljard euro bezuinigen op zorg en het verhogen van het eigen risico naar 520 euro zal enorme gevolgen hebben voor ouderen\, chronisch zieken\, gehandicapten\, de GGZ-zorg\, de kraamzorg en voor iedereen die zorg nodig heeft of zorgverlener is. \nDaarom moeten we ons laten horen. Voor een Nationaal ZorgFonds zonder eigen risico zodat goede en betaalbare zorg voor iedereen toegankelijk is. SP\, Dokters van de Wereld\, Recht op GGZ\, het Seniorennetwerk Nederland\, en vakbonden FNV\, CNV en Nu91 organiseren dinsdag 10 maart 2026 de Red de Zorg actie tegenover de Tweede Kamer. Ook zorgverleners en patiënten spreken op de actie. Op die dag wordt namelijk gestemd over voorstellen om het eigen risico van tafel te halen\, om de markt uit de zorg te halen en om de bezuinigingen de zorg te stoppen.
