Monsignor Romero was actively engaged in denouncing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable individuals in El Salvador. DESCRIPTION:Op 22 maart 2025 wordt in Amsterdam gedemonstreerd tegen racisme en fascisme\, om een krachtig geluid te laten horen tegen extreemrechts\, sluit je aan bij deze wereldwijde protesten en teken het Manifest tegen racisme en fascisme! \nDe democratische rechtsstaat\, fundamentele vrijheden en mensenrechten worden bedreigd door een kabinet dat apartheidsbeleid nastreeft. Moslims\, vluchtelingen en andere Nederlanders met een migratieachtergrond worden gebruikt als zondebok in een strategie die erop gericht is om verdeeldheid en haat te zaaien. Ondertussen worden basisrechten\, zoals het recht op demonstratie\, vrije meningsuiting en fundamentele kritiek\, langzaam uitgehold en steunt Nederland oorlogen. Tegelijkertijd worden burgers afgeleid van de werkelijke problemen: de afbraak van de zorg\, het onderwijs\, betaalbare huisvesting en groeiende ongelijkheid. Dit is niet langer een politiek meningsverschil\, maar een strijd tussen democratie en onderdrukking\, tussen gelijkheid en uitsluiting. Extreemrechts nationalistisch heeft een duidelijke agenda: een samenleving waarin discriminatie genormaliseerd wordt en mensen worden beoordeeld op afkomst\, LGBTQI+\, beperking\, religie of huidskleur. De geschiedenis heeft ons geleerd dat een autoritair regime uiteindelijk iedereen raakt die afwijkt van zijn ‘waarheid’. Wij kunnen dit niet toestaan. DESCRIPTION:Oproep aan de Tweede Kamer-fractie van GroenLinks-PvdA: Stop de genocide in Gaza. \nGezien het genadeloze geweld dat Israël 18 maart 2025 heeft hervat op de Palestijnse bevolking in Gaza (in twee dagen meer dan 700 doden) en het voortdurend geweld\, de intimidatie en de etnische zuivering op de Westelijke Jordaanoever\, \nGezien het opnieuw moedwillig en eenzijdig verbreken door Israël van de wapenstilstand akkoorden\, bereikt met Hamas\, en het niet nakomen van verdere besprekingen over de invulling van de 2e fase van dit wapenstilstand akkoord zoals overeengekomen\, \nRoept het Landelijk Netwerk Palestina van leden van GroenLinks\, Dwars\, PvdA en JS\, de Tweede Kamer fractie van GroenLinks-PvdA dringend op zo spoedig mogelijk een beroep te doen op de Nederlandse regering om: \n\n\n\nTen eerste\, de Israëlische regering te laten weten dat Nederland het ongehoord vindt dat Israël zich niet houdt aan de afspraken zoals vastgelegd in het 3-fasen wapenstilstand akkoord\, na vrijwel een jaar van onderhandelingen tussen Israël en Hamas\, bemiddeld door de USA\, Qatar en Egypte.\nTen tweede\, de Israëlische regering te verstaan te geven dat voortzetting van de hernieuwde bombardementen\, een mogelijk grondoffensief in Gaza en voortzetting van het terreur geweld op de Westelijke Jordaanoever onmiddellijk gestopt moet worden.\nTen derde\, de Israëlische regering te verstaan te geven dat met onmiddellijke ingang alle essentiële hulp (voedsel\, water\, medicijnen\, elektriciteit\, brandstof) weer tot Gaza moet worden toegelaten.\nTen vierde\, aan zijn verplichtingen onder het internationaal recht te voldoen. Niet als gunst\, maar als plicht. Het Israëlische geweld in Gaza en op de Westelijke Jordaanoever gaat in tegen elk internationaal recht\, tegen de maatregelen opgelegd aan Israël door het ICJ en zal elke poging tot vrede in de weg staan. DESCRIPTION:Pakhuis de Zwijger en Comité 21 maart organiseren in 2025 de 7e editie van de jaarlijkse Week Tegen Racisme (WTR)\, een programma in aanloop naar de landelijke Demonstratie Tegen Racisme. \nDe WTR biedt een interdisciplinair programma vol theater\, film\, muziek\, spoken word\, storytelling\, lezingen\, workshops en dialoog. Hierbij wordt samengewerkt met kunstenaars in allerlei disciplines\, maatschappelijke organisaties en stadmakers. Tijdens het festival staan een groot aantal onderwerpen binnen de hoofdthema’s racisme en discriminatie op de agenda\, zo worden onder meer politiek\, polarisering\, sport\, onderwijs\, vluchtelingen-vraagstukken en klimaatracisme behandeld. Naar aanleiding van de vorige Tweede Kamerverkiezingen leven wij in een nieuwe politieke realiteit\, waarin partijen met extreemrechtse ideologieën in het kabinet zitten. Daarom is er in de WTR 2025 extra aandacht aan initiatieven ter verstrekking van een gelijkwaardig en rechtvaardige tegenbeweging. DESCRIPTION:Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day celebrated by the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations\, the day aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all of the member countries of the UN. \nThe day was first celebrated on March 1\, 2014\, and was launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 27 February of that year with a major event in Beijing. In February 2017\, UNAIDS called on people to “make some noise around zero discrimination\, to speak up and prevent discrimination from standing in the way of achieving ambitions\, goals and dreams.” The day is particularly noted by organisations like UNAIDS that combat discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. “HIV related stigma and discrimination is pervasive and exists in almost every part of the world including our Liberia”\, according to Dr. Ivan F. Camanor\, Chairman of the National AIDS Commission of Liberia. The UN Development Programme also paid tribute in 2017 to LGBTI people with HIV/AIDS who face discrimination. Campaigners in India have used this day to speak out against laws making discrimination against the LGBTI community more likely\, especially during the previous campaign to repeal the law (Indian Penal Code\, s377) that used to criminalise homosexuality in that country\, before that law was overturned by the Indian Supreme Court in September 2018. In 2015\, Armenian Americans in California held a ‘die-in’ on Zero Discrimination Day to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide. \nIn 2025 is the tenth anniversary of Zero Discrimination Day and the theme is ‘We stand together‘. \nLinks:\nZero Discrimination Day

DESCRIPTION:More journalists were killed in 2024 than in any other year since the Committee to Protect Journalists began collecting data more than three decades ago\, at least 124 journalists and media workers were killed last year\, nearly two-thirds of them Palestinians killed by Israel. \nThe number of conflicts globally – whether political\, criminal\, or military in nature – has doubled in the past five years\, and this is reflected in the high number of deaths of journalists in nations such as Sudan\, Pakistan\, and Myanmar. But the toll of conflict on the press is most glaring in the unprecedented number of journalists and media workers killed in the Israel-Gaza war\, 85 in 2024\, and 78 in 2023. All of the 2024 killings point to the increased dangers facing reporters and media workers – and the threat that poses to the flow of information worldwide. The global total of 124 deaths exceeds the record high of 113 killed in 2007\, when the Iraq war accounted for almost half of journalist casualties. Outside of Gaza (82) and Lebanon (3)\, CPJ documented the killing of 39 other journalists and media workers in 16 nations\, with the deadliest being Sudan (6)\, Pakistan (6)\, Mexico (5)\, Syria (4)\, Myanmar (3)\, Iraq (3)\, and Haiti (2) during 2024. Minister Faber negeert deze duidelijke afkeuring van een van de belangrijkste adviseurs van de regering en zet haar plannen gewoon door. Meerdere partijen\, waaronder de NSC\, hebben beloofd de wet tegen te houden als het advies van de Raad van State negatief zou zijn. Nu is het tijd om die belofte waar te maken! Eerder hebben we de noodwet-procedure kunnen stoppen. Ook deze voorstellen mogen niet door de Tweede Kamer! Roep politici op om op te komen voor de democratie en de mensenrechten te verdedigen. Zij zijn de waakhonden van onze rechtsstaat en moeten hun moreel kompas laten zien! Wijs hen op het misbruik van spoedwetprocedures en het gevaar voor onze rechten als deze ‘crisismaatregelen’ de norm worden. Laten we druk zetten op politici om het advies van de Raad van State te volgen en deze wet te blokkeren. De gehele Tweede Kamer heeft de verantwoordelijkheid om het kabinet te controleren. DESCRIPTION:Report ‘Freedom in the Word – The Uphill Battle to Safeguard Rights‘: Global freedom declined for the 19th consecutive year in 2024. \nViolence and the repression of political opponents during elections\, ongoing armed conflicts\, and the spread of authoritarian practices contributed to the 19th year of declining freedom. In the year to come\, all those who understand the value of political rights and civil liberties must work together in the defense of democracy. \nSixty countries experienced deterioration in their political rights and civil liberties\, and only 34 secured improvements. El Salvador\, Haiti\, Kuwait\, and Tunisia were the countries with the largest score declines for the year\, while Bangladesh\, Bhutan\, Sri Lanka\, and Syria recorded the largest gains. In over 40 percent of the countries and territories that held national elections in 2024\, candidates were targeted with assassination attempts or assaults\, polling places were attacked\, or postelection protests were suppressed with disproportionate force. Elections in authoritarian countries were manipulated to prevent genuine opposition candidates from participating. Ongoing civil wars and interstate conflict as well as violence perpetrated by armed militias\, mercenaries\, and criminal organizations undermined security and prevented the exercise of fundamental rights\, making the world not only less safe but also less free in 2024. \nDespite the overall global decline in freedom\, bright spots emerged around the world as a result of competitive elections or following the collapse of long-standing authoritarian regimes. New governments will now face the difficult task of building and strengthening democratic institutions while also protecting individual rights. Global freedom faces serious challenges in 2025\, including security threats from multiple armed conflicts\, deepening repression in both entrenched and emerging autocracies\, and democratically elected leaders who seek to advance their goals by overriding institutional checks on their power. It is in the vital interest of all those who believe in democracy to invest in democratic institutions at home\, call out attacks on rights abroad\, work together to promote lasting peace\, and support human rights defenders wherever they operate. DESCRIPTION:Op 1 januari 2024 waren naar schatting 33 duizend mensen tussen de 18 en 65 jaar in Nederland dakloos\, dit is hoger dan begin 2022\, toen lag dit aantal nog op bijna 27 duizend. \nTussen 2018 en 2022 daalde het aantal dakloze mensen nog. Dit blijkt uit nieuwe cijfers van het CBS\, op basis van drie registers en een bijschatting. Mensen die buiten\, in een auto\, kraakpand of vakantiewoning slapen\, en mensen die de noodopvang bezoeken\, telt het CBS als dakloos. Ook mensen zonder eigen onderdak die tijdelijk verblijven bij familie\, vrienden of kennissen worden beschouwd als dakloos. SUMMARY:Day of the Endangered Lawyer 2025
DESCRIPTION:Ever since lawyers Symone Gaasbeek-Wielinga and Hans Gaasbeek went onto a fact finding mission in the Philippines in 1990 (lawyers are being intimidated\, threatened and even murdered because they aide their clients in politically sensitive cases) they have been active for their threatened colleagues all across the world. \nThe creation of this special international day is an international effort put together with like-minded colleagues. The first ever Day of the Endangered Lawyer was organized in 2009. Hans and Symone created the foundation Day of the Endangered Lawyer to strengthen the work. Together with AED and ELDH they created the Coalition for the Endangered Lawyer\, which comes together every year to choose the new country and to discuss the progress. The purpose of the Day of the Endangered Lawyer is a call for attention on that day to threatened human rights lawyers with special attention to one designated country. The course of action is to draw a centralized petition in as many cities as possible\, in and across Europe’s borders\, which will be offered to ambassadors\, consulates and other bodies of authority. The petition will call for attention to the problematic situation of endangered lawyers in that country. Another aim is to engage in a dialogue with the representatives of the government of the country. Furthermore\, forum discussions are being organized with local fellow lawyers and publications are made about the lawyers’ situation. \nLinks:\nDay of the Endangered Lawyer
