DESCRIPTION:Although physical attacks against journalists are the most visible violations of press freedom\, economic pressure is also a major\, more insidious problem. \nThe economic indicator on the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index now stands at an unprecedented\, critical low as its decline continued in 2025. As a result\, the global state of press freedom is now classified as a “difficult situation” for the first time in the history of the Index. At a time when press freedom is experiencing a worrying decline in many parts of the world\, a major — yet often underestimated — factor is seriously weakening the media: economic pressure. Much of this is due to ownership concentration\, pressure from advertisers and financial backers\, and public aid that is restricted\, absent or allocated in an opaque manner. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII or PFII) is the UN’s central coordinating body for matters relating to the concerns and rights of the world’s indigenous peoples. \nThere are more than 370 million indigenous people (also known as native\, original\, aboriginal and first peoples) in some 70 countries worldwide. The forum was created on 28 July 2000 by resolution 2000/22\, as an outcome of the UN’s International Year for the World’s Indigenous People in 1993\, within the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995–2004). It is an advisory body within the framework of the United Nations System that reports to the UN‘s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). More specifically\, the Permanent Forum: \n\nprovides expert advice and recommendations on Indigenous issues to the Council\, as well as to programmes\, funds and agencies of the United Nations\, through ECOSOC;\nraises awareness and promotes the integration and coordination of activities related to Indigenous issues within the UN system;\nprepares and disseminates information on Indigenous issues;\npromotes respect for and full application of the provisions of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and follow up the effectiveness of this Declaration (Art. 42 UNDRIP).\n\nThe first meeting of the Permanent Forum was held in May 2002\, with yearly sessions thereafter. The Forum usually meets for 10 days each year\, at the UN Headquarters in New York. According to the ECOSOC resolution E/2000/22\, the Forum may also meet at the UN Office in Geneva or at such other place that it decides. In addition to the six mandated areas (economic and social development\, culture\, the environment\, education\, health and human rights)\, each session is thematically focused on a specific issue. The Permanent Forum is one of three UN bodies that is mandated to deal specifically with Indigenous Peoples’ issues. The others are the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Permanent Forum’s engagement and role in promoting Indigenous Peoples’ rights are made possible through the Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues\, which overall facilitates follow-up to the Forum’s recommendations\, awareness raising and outreach on Indigenous issues as well as representation and participation of Permanent Forum members at international meetings of significance for its mandate. In addition\, the Trust Fund provides support for the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Zonder hulp blijven kansen onbenut en dromen onbereikbaar. Daarom riep Kinderhulp de Dag van de Kinderarmoede in het leven. Omdat geen enkel kind de dupe mag zijn van armoede. SUMMARY:Unleashing terror: Dutch dogs in Israel’s war crimes - publication
DESCRIPTION:The Israeli military systematically uses dogs to brutalise Palestinians\, including children\, elderly people\, and detainees\, sometimes with fatal consequences\, evidence obtained by SOMO reveals a significant risk that police dogs exported from the Netherlands are used by the Israeli army in international law abuses. \nThe Netherlands is a key country from where police-trained dogs are exported to the Israeli army\, but corporate confidentiality means that no public information is available about the suppliers or the number of dogs supplied to the Israeli army by Dutch companies. SOMO discovered that police dog companies in the Netherlands obtained the required veterinary certificates for the export of at least 110 dogs to Israel between October 2023 and February 2025. One hundred of these certificates were granted to the company Four Winds K9\, a police dog training centre in the southern Dutch village of Geffen. Early 2024 in Nablus\, occupied West Bank. Amna’s three-year-old son Ahmad is sleeping in her arms as she gets her other children ready for school. Suddenly\, Israeli soldiers force their way into her home with a large police dog. The dog attacks Amna and Ahmad\, clenching its jaw around the toddler’s buttocks for several minutes. “I could hear my son scream in pain and my daughters were shrieking and crying out of fear and terror\,” Amna recalls. The soldiers drag the dog and Ahmad down the stairs and out of the building\, hitting Amna with the butt of a rifle to stop her from reaching Ahmad. When the soldiers return Ahmed to his mother\, he is “unconscious\, wrapped in a bloodied foil blanket.” Ahmad is hospitalised for eight days and needs 42 internal and external stitches\, while Amna’s other children suffer “severe psychological trauma after everything they witnessed.” From Gaza to the West Bank\, from Palestinian homes to Israeli detention centres\, Palestinians have shared horrifying testimonies of dog attacks by the Israeli military. DESCRIPTION:Op de Dag van de Roma worden de rijke culturele erfenis en tradities van de Roma en hun bijdragen aan Europa en de Verenigde Staten erkend. \nDe datum 8 april werd uitgeroepen tot de internationale Romadag omdat het eerste Internationaal Romani Congres\, een serie van congressen voor discussie onder Roma wereldwijd\, werd gehouden op 8 april 1971 in Londen. Aan dit congres namen 23 vertegenwoordigers uit 9 landen deel: Tsjecho-Slowakije\, Finland\, Frankrijk\, Groot-Brittannië\, Hongarije\, Ierland\, Spanje en Joegoslavië. Tijdens het eerste congres werd de in 1933 ontworpen vlag van de Roma officieel erkend en werd het lied Djelem\, djelem uitgeroepen tot volkslied van de Roma. Het is een dag waarop aandacht wordt gegeven aan hun leefsituatie. Roma zijn de meest achtergestelde etnische groep van Europa. In heel Europa worden de fundamentele rechten van de Roma nog steeds regelmatig geschonden. Herhaaldelijke gevallen van racistisch geweld en haatzaaierij tegen Roma worden regelmatig gemeld. Roma worden ook gediscrimineerd bij toegang tot werk\, onderwijs\, gezondheidszorg en openbare en sociale diensten. Het meest alarmerende zijn de schendingen van de huisvestingsrechten van de Roma in Europa. De schendingen beperken zich niet alleen tot geen toegang hebben tot huisvesting. Het gaat ook over gedwongen uitzetting en systemische vernietiging van Romeinse nederzettingen. Feit blijft dat het recht op behoorlijke huisvesting ook een fundamenteel mensenrecht is. In Nederland wordt een onderscheid gemaakt tussen Sinti en Roma\, het verschil heeft te maken met datum van vestiging. Met Roma wordt bedoeld de groep mensen die voornamelijk uit Oost-Europa komen en zich in de negentiende en twintigste eeuw in Nederland vestigden. DESCRIPTION:In 2024 zijn er wereldwijd 1.518 mensen geëxecuteerd in vijftien verschillende landen plaats\, is te lezen in het jaarlijkse doodstrafrapport ‘Death Sentences and Executions 2024‘ van Amnesty International. \nDit is het hoogste aantal sinds 2015\, in dat jaar vonden er 1.634 executies plaats. Dit zijn de executies die Amnesty heeft kunnen verifiëren\, de werkelijke aantallen liggen hoger. De meeste executies in 2024 vonden plaats in het Midden-Oosten\, net als vorig jaar. Het aantal landen dat executies uitvoerde (vijftien) was het laagste ooit. In het rapport zijn executies uit China niet meegenomen. Daar zijn alle gegevens omtrent de doodstraf staatsgeheim. Aangenomen wordt dat er jaarlijks duizenden mensen worden geëxecuteerd\, wat China tot grootste executeur van de wereld maakt. Ook zijn er vanwege dezelfde reden geen cijfers bekend over Noord-Korea en Vietnam. Ook voor die landen wordt aangenomen dat de doodstraf veel wordt toegepast. Vanwege de crises in Palestina en Syrië\, kon Amnesty International daar geen aantallen bevestigen. De grote toename van executies kan worden toegeschreven aan Iran\, Irak en Saudi-Arabië. Deze drie landen waren verantwoordelijk voor een totaal van 1.380 executies. In Irak verdrievoudigde het aantal executies bijna – van ten minste zestien in 2023 tot ten minste 63 in 2024. In Saudi-Arabië verdubbelde het aantal – van 172 naar ten minste 345. In Iran werden 119 meer mensen geëxecuteerd dan het jaar ervoor – van ten minste 853 naar ten minste 972. Iran was daarmee verantwoordelijk voor 64% van alle executies. These original WishMakers were inspired by the impact the wish had on Chris and vowed to do more. A global movement was born. DESCRIPTION:Each year\, on 24 March\, the Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed. \nThis annual observance pays tribute to the memory of Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero\, who was murdered on 24 March 1980. Monsignor Romero was actively engaged in denouncing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable individuals in El Salvador. DESCRIPTION:Op 22 maart 2025 wordt in Amsterdam gedemonstreerd tegen racisme en fascisme\, om een krachtig geluid te laten horen tegen extreemrechts\, sluit je aan bij deze wereldwijde protesten en teken het Manifest tegen racisme en fascisme! \nDe democratische rechtsstaat\, fundamentele vrijheden en mensenrechten worden bedreigd door een kabinet dat apartheidsbeleid nastreeft. Moslims\, vluchtelingen en andere Nederlanders met een migratieachtergrond worden gebruikt als zondebok in een strategie die erop gericht is om verdeeldheid en haat te zaaien. Ondertussen worden basisrechten\, zoals het recht op demonstratie\, vrije meningsuiting en fundamentele kritiek\, langzaam uitgehold en steunt Nederland oorlogen. Tegelijkertijd worden burgers afgeleid van de werkelijke problemen: de afbraak van de zorg\, het onderwijs\, betaalbare huisvesting en groeiende ongelijkheid. Dit is niet langer een politiek meningsverschil\, maar een strijd tussen democratie en onderdrukking\, tussen gelijkheid en uitsluiting. Extreemrechts nationalistisch heeft een duidelijke agenda: een samenleving waarin discriminatie genormaliseerd wordt en mensen worden beoordeeld op afkomst\, LGBTQI+\, beperking\, religie of huidskleur. De geschiedenis heeft ons geleerd dat een autoritair regime uiteindelijk iedereen raakt die afwijkt van zijn ‘waarheid’. Wij kunnen dit niet toestaan. De les uit het verleden is helder: wie zwijgt\, stemt toe. DESCRIPTION:Oproep aan de Tweede Kamer-fractie van GroenLinks-PvdA: Stop de genocide in Gaza. \nGezien het genadeloze geweld dat Israël 18 maart 2025 heeft hervat op de Palestijnse bevolking in Gaza (in twee dagen meer dan 700 doden) en het voortdurend geweld\, de intimidatie en de etnische zuivering op de Westelijke Jordaanoever\, \nGezien het opnieuw moedwillig en eenzijdig verbreken door Israël van de wapenstilstand akkoorden\, bereikt met Hamas\, en het niet nakomen van verdere besprekingen over de invulling van de 2e fase van dit wapenstilstand akkoord zoals overeengekomen\, \nRoept het Landelijk Netwerk Palestina van leden van GroenLinks\, Dwars\, PvdA en JS\, de Tweede Kamer fractie van GroenLinks-PvdA dringend op zo spoedig mogelijk een beroep te doen op de Nederlandse regering om: \n\n\n\nTen eerste\, de Israëlische regering te laten weten dat Nederland het ongehoord vindt dat Israël zich niet houdt aan de afspraken zoals vastgelegd in het 3-fasen wapenstilstand akkoord\, na vrijwel een jaar van onderhandelingen tussen Israël en Hamas\, bemiddeld door de USA\, Qatar en Egypte.\nTen tweede\, de Israëlische regering te verstaan te geven dat voortzetting van de hernieuwde bombardementen\, een mogelijk grondoffensief in Gaza en voortzetting van het terreur geweld op de Westelijke Jordaanoever onmiddellijk gestopt moet worden.\nTen derde\, de Israëlische regering te verstaan te geven dat met onmiddellijke ingang alle essentiële hulp (voedsel\, water\, medicijnen\, elektriciteit\, brandstof) weer tot Gaza moet worden toegelaten.\nTen vierde\, aan zijn verplichtingen onder het internationaal recht te voldoen. Niet als gunst\, maar als plicht. Het Israëlische geweld in Gaza en op de Westelijke Jordaanoever gaat in tegen elk internationaal recht\, tegen de maatregelen opgelegd aan Israël door het ICJ en zal elke poging tot vrede in de weg staan. DESCRIPTION:Pakhuis de Zwijger en Comité 21 maart organiseren in 2025 de 7e editie van de jaarlijkse Week Tegen Racisme (WTR)\, een programma in aanloop naar de landelijke Demonstratie Tegen Racisme. \nDe WTR biedt een interdisciplinair programma vol theater\, film\, muziek\, spoken word\, storytelling\, lezingen\, workshops en dialoog. Hierbij wordt samengewerkt met kunstenaars in allerlei disciplines\, maatschappelijke organisaties en stadmakers. Tijdens het festival staan een groot aantal onderwerpen binnen de hoofdthema’s racisme en discriminatie op de agenda\, zo worden onder meer politiek\, polarisering\, sport\, onderwijs\, vluchtelingen-vraagstukken en klimaatracisme behandeld. Naar aanleiding van de vorige Tweede Kamerverkiezingen leven wij in een nieuwe politieke realiteit\, waarin partijen met extreemrechtse ideologieën in het kabinet zitten. Daarom is er in de WTR 2025 extra aandacht aan initiatieven ter verstrekking van een gelijkwaardig en rechtvaardige tegenbeweging. DESCRIPTION:Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day celebrated by the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations\, the day aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all of the member countries of the UN. \nThe day was first celebrated on March 1\, 2014\, and was launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 27 February of that year with a major event in Beijing. In February 2017\, UNAIDS called on people to “make some noise around zero discrimination\, to speak up and prevent discrimination from standing in the way of achieving ambitions\, goals and dreams.” The day is particularly noted by organisations like UNAIDS that combat discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. “HIV related stigma and discrimination is pervasive and exists in almost every part of the world including our Liberia”\, according to Dr. Ivan F. Camanor\, Chairman of the National AIDS Commission of Liberia. The UN Development Programme also paid tribute in 2017 to LGBTI people with HIV/AIDS who face discrimination. Campaigners in India have used this day to speak out against laws making discrimination against the LGBTI community more likely\, especially during the previous campaign to repeal the law (Indian Penal Code\, s377) that used to criminalise homosexuality in that country\, before that law was overturned by the Indian Supreme Court in September 2018. In 2015\, Armenian Americans in California held a ‘die-in’ on Zero Discrimination Day to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide. \nIn 2025 is the tenth anniversary of Zero Discrimination Day and the theme is ‘We stand together‘. \nLinks:\nZero Discrimination Day

DESCRIPTION:Malcolm X\, geboren als Malcolm Little (Omaha (Nebraska)\, 19 mei 1925 – New York\, 21 februari 1965) was een van de Amerikaanse leiders en woordvoerders van de Nation of Islam\, een Afro-Amerikaanse moslimorganisatie voor gelijke rechten van de zwarte bevolking. \nHij richtte de Muslim Mosque\, Inc. en de Organization of Afro-American Unity op. Op 21 februari 1965 werd hij vermoord. Tijdens zijn leven ontwikkelde hij zich van een kleine crimineel tot een van de militantste zwarte separatistische leiders van de VS die wereldwijde bekendheid verwierf als voorvechter van het panafrikanisme. Zijn “achternaam” X is een verwijzing naar het verleden van de Afro-Amerikanen die als slaven naar Amerika kwamen. Velen kregen daarbij dezelfde achternaam als die van hun eigenaren.
