DESCRIPTION:It is a sad reality that in situations where armed conflict breaks out\, it is the most vulnerable members of societies – namely children\, who are most affected by the consequences of war. \nThe six most common violations are recruitment and use of children in war\, killing\, sexual violence\, abduction\, attacks on schools and hospitals\, and denial of humanitarian access. On 19 August 1982\, at its emergency special session on the question of Palestine\, the General Assembly\, “appalled at the great number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children victims of Israel’s acts of aggression”\, decided to commemorate 4 June of each year as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical\, mental and emotional abuse. This day affirms the UN’s commitment to protect the rights of children. Its work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child\, the most rapidly and widely ratified international human rights treaty in history. \nFollowing on the ground-breaking Graça Machel report\, which drew global attention to the devastating impact of armed conflict on children\, in 1997 The General Assembly adopted 51/77 Resolution on the Rights of the Child. It was a landmark development in efforts to improve the protection of children in conflict situations. This signalled the start of a new consensus among Member States\, on the need for dedicated attention\, advocacy and coordinated effort\, by the international community\, to address the vulnerabilities and violations faced by children in conflict-related situations. Resolution 51/77 built on existing General Assembly efforts to protect the rights of children\, including through the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocol\, and the annual Rights of the Child resolutions. And it established the mandate of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. \nIn recent years\, the number of violations perpetrated against children have\, in many conflict zones\, increased. More needs to be done to protect the 250 million children living in countries and areas affected by conflict. More must be done to protect children from targeting by violent extremists\, to promote international humanitarian and human rights law\, and to ensure accountability for violations of the rights of children. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides us with the universal masterplan to secure a better future for children. The new agenda includes for the first time a specific target (16.2) to end all forms of violence against children\, and ending the abuse\, neglect and exploitation of children is mainstreamed across several other violence-related targets. \nLinks:\nDay of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

DESCRIPTION:Honderdduizenden kinderen hebben het moeilijk op de basisschool omdat ze in armoede opgroeien: stress en oververmoeidheid hebben invloed op de schoolprestaties\, zegt het Jeugdeducatiefonds in het Schoolrapport van Nederland\, het land krijgt daarin een flinke onvoldoende. \n\nEr is bij deze kinderen thuis bijvoorbeeld geen geld voor een fiets of een bed\, en ongeveer 28.000 kinderen dragen geen bril omdat hun ouders dat niet kunnen betalen\, zo meldt het fonds op basis van eigen onderzoek en dat van andere organisaties. Het fonds werd 10 jaar geleden opgericht om in zulke gevallen hulp te bieden\, en werkt nu samen met zo’n 900 van de 6500 basisscholen in Nederland. Het fonds kocht afgelopen jaar bijvoorbeeld voor 229 kinderen een bed\, om te voorkomen dat deze kinderen op de grond moesten slapen of bij een broertje of zusje in bed. “Als kinderen niet goed kunnen zien of kunnen slapen\, kunnen ze ook niet goed leren”\, zegt het fonds in een toelichting. DESCRIPTION:The Nakba (Arabic: النكبة\, romanized: an-Nakbah\, ’the “disaster”\, “catastrophe”\, or “cataclysm”‘)\, also known as the Palestinian Catastrophe\, was the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948\, and the permanent displacement of a majority of the Palestinian Arabs. \nApproaching the 77th anniversary of the Nakba\, the ethnic cleansing and expulsion of most of the Indigenous people of Palestine\, your action is needed now more than ever. For almost 20 years\, the Boycott\, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement has been leading the call for strategic and impactful grassroots solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for justice\, freedom and equality. Since the start of Israel’s livestreamed genocide against the people in Gaza\, BDS pressure to end international complicity in its regime of settler-colonial apartheid and illegal occupation has risen exponentially. We all know that Israel is only able to continue its genocide\, including daily massacres\, burning our children\, men and women alive\, or starving and thirsting them to death\, due to the ongoing complicity of states\, companies and institutions around the world. Israel announced its genocide against Palestinians is about to get even deadlier\, as it prepares for mass ethnic cleansing and total destruction of Gaza. “In our thousands\, in our millions\, we are all Palestinians\,” is a popular slogan of solidarity around the world. Given the ferocity of Israel’s daily massacres and its criminal impunity\, we need to escalate pressure. Corporations and governments are feeling the heat and have cut ties of complicity. BDS works but we need more to force Israel to stop its crimes. So in your thousands\, and in your millions: Rise up and escalate BDS now! The Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC)\, the largest coalition in Palestinian society that is leading the global BDS movement\, calls for mass global mobilizations and civil disobedience on 15 May. Let’s show complicit governments\, institutions and corporations what real people power can do. \nThe term Nakba is used to describe both the events of 1948 and the ongoing persecution\, displacement\, and occupation of the Palestinians\, both in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip\, as well as in Palestinian refugee camps throughout the region. The foundational events of the Nakba took place during and shortly after the 1948 Palestine war\, including 78% of Mandatory Palestine being declared as Israel\, the expulsion and flight of 700\,000 Palestinians\, the related depopulation and destruction of over 500 Palestinian villages by Zionist militias and subsequent geographical erasure\, the denial of the Palestinian right of return\, the creation of permanent Palestinian refugees and the “shattering of Palestinian society”. The expulsion of the Palestinians has since been described by some historians as ethnic cleansing. In 1998\, Yasser Arafat proposed that Palestinians should mark the 50th anniversary of the Nakba declaring 15 May\, the day after Israeli independence in 1948\, as Nakba Day\, formalizing a date that had been unofficially used as early as 1949.The Nakba greatly influenced the Palestinian culture and is a foundational symbol of Palestinian identity\, together with “Handala“\, the keffiyeh and the symbolic key. DESCRIPTION:Terwijl de Palestijnen verhongeren\, geeft het Eurovisie Songfestival Israël een internationaal podium\, met een afschuwelijke boodschap: oorlogsmisdaden kun je witwassen met popliedjes. \nRusland werd in 2022 al een dag na de inval in Oekraïne uitgesloten\, dus waarom mag Israël nog meedoen ondanks hun oorlogsmisdaden in Gaza? Sluit je aan bij de oproep om druk te zetten op het songfestival om Israël uit te sluiten zolang ze hun aanvallen op het Palestijnse volk voortzetten. Al maanden komt er geen humanitaire hulp meer binnen in Gaza. Kinderen in Gaza sterven van honger. De Israëlische regering wil heel Gaza bezetten en miljoenen mensen verdrijven. Maar het Eurovisiesongfestival staat klaar om Israël een internationaal podium te geven. Verschillende landen zoals Spanje\, IJsland en Slovenië staan nu op tegen deze hypocrisie — en ook in Nederland klinkt er protest. Artiesten\, omroepen en duizenden mensen wereldwijd laten hun stem horen. We hebben nog enkele dagen om ervoor te zorgen dat ze onze oproep niet kunnen negeren. Sluit je aan bij de oproep om Israël uit te sluiten van het Eurovisiesongfestival zolang ze hun aanvallen voortzetten. Het songfestival trekt miljoenen kijkers — bijna 6% van de wereldbevolking. Deze campagne verzacht misschien niet rechtstreeks het leed in Gaza\, maar als we zwijgen nu Israël het podium betreedt\, geven we het signaal dat oorlogsmisdaden geen gevolgen hebben. As a result\, the global state of press freedom is now classified as a “difficult situation” for the first time in the history of the Index. At a time when press freedom is experiencing a worrying decline in many parts of the world\, a major — yet often underestimated — factor is seriously weakening the media: economic pressure. Much of this is due to ownership concentration\, pressure from advertisers and financial backers\, and public aid that is restricted\, absent or allocated in an opaque manner. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII or PFII) is the UN’s central coordinating body for matters relating to the concerns and rights of the world’s indigenous peoples. \nThere are more than 370 million indigenous people (also known as native\, original\, aboriginal and first peoples) in some 70 countries worldwide. The forum was created on 28 July 2000 by resolution 2000/22\, as an outcome of the UN’s International Year for the World’s Indigenous People in 1993\, within the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995–2004). It is an advisory body within the framework of the United Nations System that reports to the UN‘s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). More specifically\, the Permanent Forum: \n\nprovides expert advice and recommendations on Indigenous issues to the Council\, as well as to programmes\, funds and agencies of the United Nations\, through ECOSOC;\nraises awareness and promotes the integration and coordination of activities related to Indigenous issues within the UN system;\nprepares and disseminates information on Indigenous issues;\npromotes respect for and full application of the provisions of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and follow up the effectiveness of this Declaration (Art. 42 UNDRIP).\n\nThe first meeting of the Permanent Forum was held in May 2002\, with yearly sessions thereafter. The Forum usually meets for 10 days each year\, at the UN Headquarters in New York. According to the ECOSOC resolution E/2000/22\, the Forum may also meet at the UN Office in Geneva or at such other place that it decides. In addition to the six mandated areas (economic and social development\, culture\, the environment\, education\, health and human rights)\, each session is thematically focused on a specific issue. The Permanent Forum is one of three UN bodies that is mandated to deal specifically with Indigenous Peoples’ issues. The others are the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Permanent Forum’s engagement and role in promoting Indigenous Peoples’ rights are made possible through the Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues\, which overall facilitates follow-up to the Forum’s recommendations\, awareness raising and outreach on Indigenous issues as well as representation and participation of Permanent Forum members at international meetings of significance for its mandate. In addition\, the Trust Fund provides support for the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. DESCRIPTION:The Israeli military systematically uses dogs to brutalise Palestinians\, including children\, elderly people\, and detainees\, sometimes with fatal consequences\, evidence obtained by SOMO reveals a significant risk that police dogs exported from the Netherlands are used by the Israeli army in international law abuses. \nThe Netherlands is a key country from where police-trained dogs are exported to the Israeli army\, but corporate confidentiality means that no public information is available about the suppliers or the number of dogs supplied to the Israeli army by Dutch companies. SOMO discovered that police dog companies in the Netherlands obtained the required veterinary certificates for the export of at least 110 dogs to Israel between October 2023 and February 2025. One hundred of these certificates were granted to the company Four Winds K9\, a police dog training centre in the southern Dutch village of Geffen. Early 2024 in Nablus\, occupied West Bank. Amna’s three-year-old son Ahmad is sleeping in her arms as she gets her other children ready for school. Suddenly\, Israeli soldiers force their way into her home with a large police dog. The dog attacks Amna and Ahmad\, clenching its jaw around the toddler’s buttocks for several minutes. “I could hear my son scream in pain and my daughters were shrieking and crying out of fear and terror\,” Amna recalls. The soldiers drag the dog and Ahmad down the stairs and out of the building\, hitting Amna with the butt of a rifle to stop her from reaching Ahmad. When the soldiers return Ahmed to his mother\, he is “unconscious\, wrapped in a bloodied foil blanket.” Ahmad is hospitalised for eight days and needs 42 internal and external stitches\, while Amna’s other children suffer “severe psychological trauma after everything they witnessed.” From Gaza to the West Bank\, from Palestinian homes to Israeli detention centres\, Palestinians have shared horrifying testimonies of dog attacks by the Israeli military. DESCRIPTION:Op de Dag van de Roma worden de rijke culturele erfenis en tradities van de Roma en hun bijdragen aan Europa en de Verenigde Staten erkend. \nDe datum 8 april werd uitgeroepen tot de internationale Romadag omdat het eerste Internationaal Romani Congres\, een serie van congressen voor discussie onder Roma wereldwijd\, werd gehouden op 8 april 1971 in Londen. Aan dit congres namen 23 vertegenwoordigers uit 9 landen deel: Tsjecho-Slowakije\, Finland\, Frankrijk\, Groot-Brittannië\, Hongarije\, Ierland\, Spanje en Joegoslavië. Tijdens het eerste congres werd de in 1933 ontworpen vlag van de Roma officieel erkend en werd het lied Djelem\, djelem uitgeroepen tot volkslied van de Roma. Het is een dag waarop aandacht wordt gegeven aan hun leefsituatie. Roma zijn de meest achtergestelde etnische groep van Europa. In heel Europa worden de fundamentele rechten van de Roma nog steeds regelmatig geschonden. Herhaaldelijke gevallen van racistisch geweld en haatzaaierij tegen Roma worden regelmatig gemeld. Roma worden ook gediscrimineerd bij toegang tot werk\, onderwijs\, gezondheidszorg en openbare en sociale diensten. Het meest alarmerende zijn de schendingen van de huisvestingsrechten van de Roma in Europa. De schendingen beperken zich niet alleen tot geen toegang hebben tot huisvesting. Het gaat ook over gedwongen uitzetting en systemische vernietiging van Romeinse nederzettingen. Feit blijft dat het recht op behoorlijke huisvesting ook een fundamenteel mensenrecht is. In Nederland wordt een onderscheid gemaakt tussen Sinti en Roma\, het verschil heeft te maken met datum van vestiging. Met Roma wordt bedoeld de groep mensen die voornamelijk uit Oost-Europa komen en zich in de negentiende en twintigste eeuw in Nederland vestigden. DESCRIPTION:In 2024 zijn er wereldwijd 1.518 mensen geëxecuteerd in vijftien verschillende landen plaats\, is te lezen in het jaarlijkse doodstrafrapport ‘Death Sentences and Executions 2024‘ van Amnesty International. \nDit is het hoogste aantal sinds 2015\, in dat jaar vonden er 1.634 executies plaats. Dit zijn de executies die Amnesty heeft kunnen verifiëren\, de werkelijke aantallen liggen hoger. De meeste executies in 2024 vonden plaats in het Midden-Oosten\, net als vorig jaar. Het aantal landen dat executies uitvoerde (vijftien) was het laagste ooit. In het rapport zijn executies uit China niet meegenomen. Daar zijn alle gegevens omtrent de doodstraf staatsgeheim. Aangenomen wordt dat er jaarlijks duizenden mensen worden geëxecuteerd\, wat China tot grootste executeur van de wereld maakt. Ook zijn er vanwege dezelfde reden geen cijfers bekend over Noord-Korea en Vietnam. Ook voor die landen wordt aangenomen dat de doodstraf veel wordt toegepast. Vanwege de crises in Palestina en Syrië\, kon Amnesty International daar geen aantallen bevestigen. De grote toename van executies kan worden toegeschreven aan Iran\, Irak en Saudi-Arabië. Deze drie landen waren verantwoordelijk voor een totaal van 1.380 executies. In Irak verdrievoudigde het aantal executies bijna – van ten minste zestien in 2023 tot ten minste 63 in 2024. In Saudi-Arabië verdubbelde het aantal – van 172 naar ten minste 345. In Iran werden 119 meer mensen geëxecuteerd dan het jaar ervoor – van ten minste 853 naar ten minste 972. Iran was daarmee verantwoordelijk voor 64% van alle executies. It started with a single wish on April 29\, 1980: 7-year-old Chris\, struggling with leukemia\, wanted to be a police officer for a day. Six people answered the call\, rallied the entire community\, and granted a wish that lifted Chris up during his darkest days. These original WishMakers were inspired by the impact the wish had on Chris and vowed to do more. A global movement was born. Today\, Make-A-Wish has been granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses for 44 years\, in 50 countries across 6 continents all over the world. More than 585\,000 wishes have been granted since then. But the work is far from done. Thousands of eligible children are waiting for their wishes to be granted. And there are many more we aren’t reaching.
