SUMMARY:Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict 2025
DESCRIPTION:The term “conflict-related sexual violence” refers to rape\, sexual slavery\, forced prostitution\, forced pregnancy\, forced abortion\, enforced sterilization\, forced marriage and any other form of sexual violence of comparable gravity perpetrated against women\, men\, girls or boys that is directly or indirectly linked to a conflict. \nThe term also encompasses trafficking in persons when committed in situations of conflict for the purpose of sexual violence or exploitation. A consistent concern is that fear and cultural stigma converge to prevent the vast majority of survivors of conflict-related sexual violence from coming forward to report such violence. Practitioners in the field estimate that for each rape reported in connection with a conflict\, 10 to 20 cases go undocumented. On 19 June 2015\, the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/69/293) proclaimed 19 June of each year the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict\, in order to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence\, to honour the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world and to pay tribute to all those who have courageously devoted their lives to and lost their lives in standing up for the eradication of these crimes. The date was chosen to commemorate the adoption on 19 June 2008 of Security Council resolution 1820 (2008)\, in which the Council condemned sexual violence as a tactic of war and an impediment to peacebuilding. In response to the rise in violent extremism\, the Security Council adopted resolution S/RES/2331 (2016)\, the first to address the nexus between trafficking\, sexual violence\, terrorism and transnational organized crime. Met deze opbrengst kan Stichting Vluchteling met haar lokale partners snel ter plekke levensreddende noodhulp bieden zoals onderdak\, medische zorg\, voedsel\, drinkwater en sanitaire voorzieningen. De Nacht van de Vluchteling is een wandeltocht waar bewustwording\, uitdagende kilometers en de bijzondere sfeer van saamhorigheid centraal staan. Je kan je individueel inschrijven\, maar ook samen met je familie of als organisatie een team starten. Onder de deelnemers zijn er ook mensen met een eigen vluchtverhaal en organisaties die zich dagelijks inzetten voor dit thema. Dit zorgt onderweg voor mooie ontmoetingen en gesprekken. In 2025 wordt gestart vanuit; Amsterdam\, Utrecht\, Rotterdam\, Nijmegen\, Tilburg én voor het eerst in Groningen! De 10 – en 20 km routes finishen op dezelfde startlocatie. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nThe World Day Against Child Labour\, which is held every year on June 12\, is an International Labour Organization (ILO)-sanctioned holiday first launched in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour\, it was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. \nThe ILO\, the United Nations body that regulates the world of work\, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. This day brings together governments\, local authorities\, civil society and international\, workers and employers organizations to point out the child labour problem and define the guidelines to help child labourers. According to ILO’s data\, hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education\, health\, leisure and basic freedoms\, violating this way their rights. Of these children\, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour. These worst forms of child labour include work in hazardous environments\, slavery\, or other forms of forced labour\, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution\, as well as involvement in armed conflict. \n2025 Theme: Progress is clear\, but there’s more to do: let’s speed up efforts! The 2025 World Day will focus on a key milestone: the release of the 2025 global estimates and trends of child labour. This joint report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will offer a comprehensive assessment of global progress toward the elimination of child labour. Although the detailed data are not yet available\, the estimates and trends identified will guide policy debates and calls for renewed commitment and investment. On this World Day\, ILO calls for full ratification of ILO Convention No. 138 on the Minimum Age and the implementation of ILO Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour.  Their effective ratification and implementation remain essential to achieving the goals set by the Durban Call to Action\, which urges us to aim for for strengthened prevention\, protection\, and partnerships to eliminate child labour. DESCRIPTION:The Dutch city of Amsterdam thought it could break a decade-long trend of implementing discriminatory algorithms\, its failure raises the question: can these programs ever be fair? \n\nThere’s an ongoing debate about whether algorithms can ever be fair when tasked with making decisions that shape people’s lives. Over the past several years of efforts to use artificial intelligence in this way\, examples of collateral damage have mounted: nonwhite job applicants weeded out of job application pools in the US\, families being wrongly flagged for child abuse investigations in Japan\, and low-income residents being denied food subsidies in India. Proponents of these assessment systems argue that they can create more efficient public services by doing more with less and\, in the case of welfare systems specifically\, reclaim money that is allegedly being lost from the public purse. In practice\, many were poorly designed from the start. They sometimes factor in personal characteristics in a way that leads to discrimination\, and sometimes they have been deployed without testing for bias or effectiveness. In general\, they offer few options for people to challenge—or even understand—the automated actions directly affecting how they live. \nWhen Amsterdam set out to create an AI model to detect potential welfare fraud\, officials thought it could break a decade-plus trend of discriminatory algorithms that had harmed people all over the world. City officials in the welfare department believed they could build technology that would prevent fraud while protecting citizens’ rights. They followed these emerging best practices and invested a vast amount of time and money in a project that eventually processed live welfare applications. But in their pilot\, they found that the system they’d developed was still not fair and effective. Why? Lighthouse Reports\, MIT Technology Review\, and the Dutch newspaper Trouw have gained unprecedented access to the system to try to find out. This shared passion fosters a sense of community and national pride. It also fosters resilience\, creativity\, and innovation in individuals. For children in particular\, play helps build relationships and improves control\, overcome trauma\, and problem-solving. It helps children develop the cognitive\, physical\, creative\, social\, and emotional skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Restricting opportunities for play directly impedes a child’s well-being and development. In educational settings\, play-based learning has been recognized as an effective approach to engage students actively in the learning process. It helps make learning more enjoyable and relevant\, thereby enhancing motivation and retention of information. Moreover\, play is considered to have a positive impact on promoting tolerance\, resilience\, and facilitating social inclusion\, conflict prevention\, and peacebuilding. In recognition of this\, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has enshrined play as a fundamental right of every child under Article 31. The international day creates a unifying moment at global\, national\, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. It signals a call for policies\, training\, and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings worldwide. \nChildren learn best through play. Play creates powerful learning opportunities across all areas of development – intellectual\, social\, emotional and physical. Through play\, children learn to forge connections with others\, build a wide range of leadership skills\, develop resilience\, navigate relationships and social challenges as well as conquer their fears. When children play\, they feel safe. Children play to make sense of the world around them. More generally\, play provides a platform for children to express and develop imagination and creativity\, which are key skills critical for the technology-driven and innovative world we live in. Playful interactions contribute to the well-being and positive mental health of parents\, caregivers and children. When humanitarian crises turn a child’s world upside down\, it is in play that children can both find safety and respite from adverse experience while also being able to explore and process their experiences with the world. When children are driven from their homes by war\, conflict\, and displacement\, access to nurturing relationships with parents/caregivers and peers are critical buffers from the effects of violence\, distress and other adverse experiences. Play comforts and soothes children. To encourage playful interactions between parents/caregivers and children\, governments and other stakeholders need to create an enabling environment. The theme for 2025 International Day of Play is “Choose Play – Every Day”. DESCRIPTION:It is a sad reality that in situations where armed conflict breaks out\, it is the most vulnerable members of societies – namely children\, who are most affected by the consequences of war. \nThe six most common violations are recruitment and use of children in war\, killing\, sexual violence\, abduction\, attacks on schools and hospitals\, and denial of humanitarian access. On 19 August 1982\, at its emergency special session on the question of Palestine\, the General Assembly\, “appalled at the great number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children victims of Israel’s acts of aggression”\, decided to commemorate 4 June of each year as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical\, mental and emotional abuse. This day affirms the UN’s commitment to protect the rights of children. Its work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child\, the most rapidly and widely ratified international human rights treaty in history. \nFollowing on the ground-breaking Graça Machel report\, which drew global attention to the devastating impact of armed conflict on children\, in 1997 The General Assembly adopted 51/77 Resolution on the Rights of the Child. It was a landmark development in efforts to improve the protection of children in conflict situations. This signalled the start of a new consensus among Member States\, on the need for dedicated attention\, advocacy and coordinated effort\, by the international community\, to address the vulnerabilities and violations faced by children in conflict-related situations. Resolution 51/77 built on existing General Assembly efforts to protect the rights of children\, including through the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocol\, and the annual Rights of the Child resolutions. And it established the mandate of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. \nIn recent years\, the number of violations perpetrated against children have\, in many conflict zones\, increased. More needs to be done to protect the 250 million children living in countries and areas affected by conflict. More must be done to protect children from targeting by violent extremists\, to promote international humanitarian and human rights law\, and to ensure accountability for violations of the rights of children. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides us with the universal masterplan to secure a better future for children. DESCRIPTION:Honderdduizenden kinderen hebben het moeilijk op de basisschool omdat ze in armoede opgroeien: stress en oververmoeidheid hebben invloed op de schoolprestaties\, zegt het Jeugdeducatiefonds in het Schoolrapport van Nederland\, het land krijgt daarin een flinke onvoldoende. \n\nEr is bij deze kinderen thuis bijvoorbeeld geen geld voor een fiets of een bed\, en ongeveer 28.000 kinderen dragen geen bril omdat hun ouders dat niet kunnen betalen\, zo meldt het fonds op basis van eigen onderzoek en dat van andere organisaties. Het fonds werd 10 jaar geleden opgericht om in zulke gevallen hulp te bieden\, en werkt nu samen met zo’n 900 van de 6500 basisscholen in Nederland. Het fonds kocht afgelopen jaar bijvoorbeeld voor 229 kinderen een bed\, om te voorkomen dat deze kinderen op de grond moesten slapen of bij een broertje of zusje in bed. “Als kinderen niet goed kunnen zien of kunnen slapen\, kunnen ze ook niet goed leren”\, zegt het fonds in een toelichting. DESCRIPTION:The Nakba (Arabic: النكبة\, romanized: an-Nakbah\, ’the “disaster”\, “catastrophe”\, or “cataclysm”‘)\, also known as the Palestinian Catastrophe\, was the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948\, and the permanent displacement of a majority of the Palestinian Arabs. \nApproaching the 77th anniversary of the Nakba\, the ethnic cleansing and expulsion of most of the Indigenous people of Palestine\, your action is needed now more than ever. For almost 20 years\, the Boycott\, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement has been leading the call for strategic and impactful grassroots solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for justice\, freedom and equality. Since the start of Israel’s livestreamed genocide against the people in Gaza\, BDS pressure to end international complicity in its regime of settler-colonial apartheid and illegal occupation has risen exponentially. We all know that Israel is only able to continue its genocide\, including daily massacres\, burning our children\, men and women alive\, or starving and thirsting them to death\, due to the ongoing complicity of states\, companies and institutions around the world. Israel announced its genocide against Palestinians is about to get even deadlier\, as it prepares for mass ethnic cleansing and total destruction of Gaza. “In our thousands\, in our millions\, we are all Palestinians\,” is a popular slogan of solidarity around the world. Given the ferocity of Israel’s daily massacres and its criminal impunity\, we need to escalate pressure. Corporations and governments are feeling the heat and have cut ties of complicity. BDS works but we need more to force Israel to stop its crimes. So in your thousands\, and in your millions: Rise up and escalate BDS now! The Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC)\, the largest coalition in Palestinian society that is leading the global BDS movement\, calls for mass global mobilizations and civil disobedience on 15 May. Let’s show complicit governments\, institutions and corporations what real people power can do. \nThe term Nakba is used to describe both the events of 1948 and the ongoing persecution\, displacement\, and occupation of the Palestinians\, both in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip\, as well as in Palestinian refugee camps throughout the region. The foundational events of the Nakba took place during and shortly after the 1948 Palestine war\, including 78% of Mandatory Palestine being declared as Israel\, the expulsion and flight of 700\,000 Palestinians\, the related depopulation and destruction of over 500 Palestinian villages by Zionist militias and subsequent geographical erasure\, the denial of the Palestinian right of return\, the creation of permanent Palestinian refugees and the “shattering of Palestinian society”. The expulsion of the Palestinians has since been described by some historians as ethnic cleansing. In 1998\, Yasser Arafat proposed that Palestinians should mark the 50th anniversary of the Nakba declaring 15 May\, the day after Israeli independence in 1948\, as Nakba Day\, formalizing a date that had been unofficially used as early as 1949.The Nakba greatly influenced the Palestinian culture and is a foundational symbol of Palestinian identity\, together with “Handala“\, the keffiyeh and the symbolic key. DESCRIPTION:Terwijl de Palestijnen verhongeren\, geeft het Eurovisie Songfestival Israël een internationaal podium\, met een afschuwelijke boodschap: oorlogsmisdaden kun je witwassen met popliedjes. \nRusland werd in 2022 al een dag na de inval in Oekraïne uitgesloten\, dus waarom mag Israël nog meedoen ondanks hun oorlogsmisdaden in Gaza? Sluit je aan bij de oproep om druk te zetten op het songfestival om Israël uit te sluiten zolang ze hun aanvallen op het Palestijnse volk voortzetten. Al maanden komt er geen humanitaire hulp meer binnen in Gaza. Kinderen in Gaza sterven van honger. De Israëlische regering wil heel Gaza bezetten en miljoenen mensen verdrijven. Maar het Eurovisiesongfestival staat klaar om Israël een internationaal podium te geven. Verschillende landen zoals Spanje\, IJsland en Slovenië staan nu op tegen deze hypocrisie — en ook in Nederland klinkt er protest. Artiesten\, omroepen en duizenden mensen wereldwijd laten hun stem horen. We hebben nog enkele dagen om ervoor te zorgen dat ze onze oproep niet kunnen negeren. Sluit je aan bij de oproep om Israël uit te sluiten van het Eurovisiesongfestival zolang ze hun aanvallen voortzetten. Er zijn al 50.000 mensen vermoord in Gaza\, vooral vrouwen en kinderen. De resterende bevolking van Gaza wordt uitgehongerd en dagelijks gebombardeerd. \nEurovisie heeft zijn slogan officieel veranderd in ‘Verenigd door muziek’ en moet nu laten zien dat dit geen holle woorden zijn. Hoveel Palestijnen zullen er nog sterven door verhongering of bombardementen voordat het liedje van Israël uitkomt? We moeten ervoor zorgen dat het Eurovisiesongfestival Israël een duidelijke boodschap geeft: je kunt niet zomaar oorlogsmisdaden plegen en vervolgens op het podium worden geroepen alsof er niets is gebeurd. Het songfestival trekt miljoenen kijkers — bijna 6% van de wereldbevolking. Deze campagne verzacht misschien niet rechtstreeks het leed in Gaza\, maar als we zwijgen nu Israël het podium betreedt\, geven we het signaal dat oorlogsmisdaden geen gevolgen hebben. Een land dat zulke overtredingen begaat\, zou geen internationaal platform mogen krijgen om zijn imago wit te wassen. DESCRIPTION:De Dag van de Persvrijheid (Engels: World Press Freedom Day) is jaarlijks ingesteld op 3 mei. \nDe dag werd in 1993 door de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties uitgeroepen om bewustzijn te kweken voor het belang van persvrijheid\, en regeringen eraan te herinneren hun plicht te vervullen het eraan gekoppelde artikel 19 van de Universele verklaring van de rechten van de mens en de Verklaring van Windhoek uit 1991 te handhaven. UNESCO onderstreept sinds 1997 jaarlijks de persvrijheid door op deze dag de Guillermo Cano Internationale Prijs voor Persvrijheid uit te reiken. DESCRIPTION:Although physical attacks against journalists are the most visible violations of press freedom\, economic pressure is also a major\, more insidious problem. \nThe economic indicator on the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index now stands at an unprecedented\, critical low as its decline continued in 2025. As a result\, the global state of press freedom is now classified as a “difficult situation” for the first time in the history of the Index. At a time when press freedom is experiencing a worrying decline in many parts of the world\, a major — yet often underestimated — factor is seriously weakening the media: economic pressure. Much of this is due to ownership concentration\, pressure from advertisers and financial backers\, and public aid that is restricted\, absent or allocated in an opaque manner. It is based on data and input from 43 member and partner organisations from 21 EU Member States. DESCRIPTION:World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a UN international day that is celebrated every April 28\, it is concerned about safe work and awareness of the dimensions and consequences of work-related accidents and diseases; to place occupational safety and health (OSH) on the international and national agendas; and to provide support to the national efforts for the improvement of national OSH systems and programmes in line with relevant international labor standards. \nIt coincides with Workers’ Memorial Day and the Canadian National Day of Mourning. World Day for Safety and Health at Work was first celebrated by the International Labour Organization in 2003. Workers’ Memorial Day\, also known as International Workers’ Memorial Day or International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured\, takes place annually around the world on April 28\, an international day of remembrance and action for workers killed\, disabled\, injured\, or made unwell by their work. In Canada\, it is commemorated as the National Day of Mourning. Workers’ Memorial Day is an opportunity to highlight the preventable nature of most workplace incidents and ill health and to promote campaigns and union organization in the fight for improvements in workplace safety. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII or PFII) is the UN’s central coordinating body for matters relating to the concerns and rights of the world’s indigenous peoples. \nThere are more than 370 million indigenous people (also known as native\, original\, aboriginal and first peoples) in some 70 countries worldwide. The forum was created on 28 July 2000 by resolution 2000/22\, as an outcome of the UN’s International Year for the World’s Indigenous People in 1993\, within the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995–2004). It is an advisory body within the framework of the United Nations System that reports to the UN‘s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). More specifically\, the Permanent Forum: \n\nprovides expert advice and recommendations on Indigenous issues to the Council\, as well as to programmes\, funds and agencies of the United Nations\, through ECOSOC;\nraises awareness and promotes the integration and coordination of activities related to Indigenous issues within the UN system;\nprepares and disseminates information on Indigenous issues;\npromotes respect for and full application of the provisions of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and follow up the effectiveness of this Declaration (Art. 42 UNDRIP).\n\nThe first meeting of the Permanent Forum was held in May 2002\, with yearly sessions thereafter. The Forum usually meets for 10 days each year\, at the UN Headquarters in New York. According to the ECOSOC resolution E/2000/22\, the Forum may also meet at the UN Office in Geneva or at such other place that it decides. In addition to the six mandated areas (economic and social development\, culture\, the environment\, education\, health and human rights)\, each session is thematically focused on a specific issue. The Permanent Forum is one of three UN bodies that is mandated to deal specifically with Indigenous Peoples’ issues. The others are the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Permanent Forum’s engagement and role in promoting Indigenous Peoples’ rights are made possible through the Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues\, which overall facilitates follow-up to the Forum’s recommendations\, awareness raising and outreach on Indigenous issues as well as representation and participation of Permanent Forum members at international meetings of significance for its mandate. In addition\, the Trust Fund provides support for the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. DESCRIPTION:Kinderhulp roept 17 april uit tot ‘Dag van de Kinderarmoede’ om aandacht te vragen voor de situatie én toekomst van de honderdduizenden kinderen in ons land die opgroeien in armoede. \nArmoede mag niet bepalen wie je bent\, wat je kunt en wie je wilt worden. Toch groeien in Nederland honderdduizenden kinderen op in een gezin met armoedestress. Geen warme jas\, geen eigen bed\, geen goede bril. Kortom: géén basisvoorzieningen\, wél obstakels die groei en ontwikkeling in de weg staan. Nationaal Fonds Kinderhulp ziet een zorgwekkende stijging van ruim 40% in hulp voor deze basisvoorzieningen. Zonder hulp blijven kansen onbenut en dromen onbereikbaar. Daarom riep Kinderhulp de Dag van de Kinderarmoede in het leven. Omdat geen enkel kind de dupe mag zijn van armoede. Wij zorgen voor directe\, concrete hulp – zonder gedoe\, zonder stigma. Maar we doen meer. We zetten kinderarmoede op de kaart\, delen kennis en trekken in Den Haag aan de bel zo hard we kunnen. Help mee. Op 17 april\, de Dag van de Kinderarmoede. En de hele week tijdens de landelijke collecteweek van Kinderhulp. Delen\, doneren\, praten – elke actie telt! Want samen zorgen we ervoor dat elk kind zo groot kan worden als het wil. \n“Armoedestress voor kinderen en jongeren in Nederland: basisvoorzieningen onder druk”. Zo luidt de titel van de rapportage die op de Dag van de Kinderarmoede wordt gepubliceerd.
