DESCRIPTION:De vrijmaking van slavernij wordt jaarlijks op 1 juli gevierd als KetiKoti (ketenen verbroken)\, voorafgaand aan deze dag wordt in juni de KetiKoti-maand gehouden\, waarin aandacht wordt gevraagd voor het slavernijverleden. \nSlavernij of lijfeigenschap is een vorm van onvrijwillige dienst waarin een persoon wordt behandeld als het eigendom van een ander persoon. De persoon die het bezit is\, wordt slaaf genoemd\, naar het Balkanvolk (Slavische volkeren) dat na de oudheid eeuwenlang de belangrijkste leverancier was van slaven. Op 1 juli 1863\, dertig jaar na het voorbeeld van de Britten\, klonken 21 kanonschoten in Paramaribo en werden de slaven vrije mensen. Het zou nog 10 jaar (1873) duren voor de slavernij daadwerkelijk in de praktijk werd afgeschaft. De Nederlandse regering betaalde een schadevergoeding van 300 gulden per slaaf aan de eigenaars ter compensatie voor het verloren eigendom. Slavenhouders maakten vlak voor de afschaffing extra jacht op weglopers om zoveel mogelijk compensatiegeld op te strijken. Slavernij komt nog steeds op veel plekken in de wereld voor\, hoewel het vrijwel overal illegaal is. SUMMARY:Nederland: Sluit de genocide geldkraan! - petitie
DESCRIPTION:Geen enkel land ter wereld investeert meer in Israël dan Nederland\, met deze investeringen wordt actief bijgedragen aan Israëls genocide van Palestijnen in Gaza. \nAls ’s werelds grootste investeerder in Israël pompen bedrijven vanuit ons land miljarden in de Israëlische oorlogsmachine waarmee Palestijnen worden gedood en uitgehongerd. Uit onderzoek van SOMO blijkt dat Nederland in 2023 ruim 49 miljard euro in Israël heeft geïnvesteerd. Het gaat hierbij om investeringen van bedrijven vanuit Nederland in Israël. Daarmee is Nederland wereldwijd de grootste investeerder in Israël. Dit betekent dat Nederland de Israëlische staatskas spekt\, maar ook dat het de macht heeft om druk uit te oefenen op Israël om de genocide en illegale bezetting te stoppen. Terwijl bijna 2 miljoen Palestijnen in Gaza worden uitgehongerd en dagelijks burgers worden vermoord\, blijft Nederland de Israëlische economie voeden. Door de geldkraan naar Israël dicht te draaien kan Nederland daadwerkelijk levens redden. Nederland heeft als grootste Europese investeerder in Israël een strategische positie om de genocide te stoppen. Israël heeft deze investeringen namelijk hard nodig om de economie van genocide en bezetting draaiend te houden. \nNederland heeft het Genocideverdrag ondertekend en heeft zich daarmee verplicht alles te doen wat in haar macht ligt om genocide te stoppen. De EU weigert nog altijd om een grens te trekken en Israël sancties op te leggen. Daarom moet Nederland nu zélf actie ondernemen. Met het onderzoek van SOMO wordt duidelijk dat Nederland genoeg kan doen en zou moeten doen. De regering moet sancties invoeren tegen Israël en een einde maken aan Nederlandse handel en investeringen die bijdragen aan de Israëlische genocide in Gaza en de illegale bezetting van Palestijns gebied. Naast deze sancties moet Nederland een volledig verbod invoeren op handel die bijdraagt aan het in stand houden van de illegale nederzettingen. Nederland mag niet langer bijdragen aan Israëls economie van genocide en bezetting. Dinsdag 2 december 2025 wordt deze petitie aangeboden in de Tweede Kamer. Ondanks een staakt-het-vuren gaat de genocide in Gaza gewoon door. Ook neemt het geweld van kolonisten tegen Palestijnen op de Westelijke Jordaanoever toe. DESCRIPTION:Op 15 juni 2025 trokken meer dan 150.000 mensen opnieuw een Rode Lijn en demonstreerden samen in Den Haag. \nEn demonstreren helpt! Een deel van de Nederlandse politiek heeft ons gehoord en naar ons geluisterd. Voor het eerst sinds de start van de genocide dienden maar liefst acht politieke partijen een gezamenlijke motie in waarin effectieve acties richting Israël werd geëist. De motie kreeg uiteindelijk geen meerderheid\, onder andere door gebrek aan steun van de coalitiepartijen NSC\, VVD en BBB. Daarmee blokkeren deze coalitiepartijen keer op keer alle concrete acties die Nederland zou moeten nemen om de druk op Israël effectief op te voeren. Er wordt dus doorgegaan met de druk op te voeren en jij kunt daarbij helpen vanachter je laptop. Spreek deze partijen aan op hun Palestina standpunt en eis actie. Woensdag 2 juli 2025 debatteert de Tweede Kamer opnieuw over de situatie in Palestina\, en specifiek over de inzet van Nederland tijdens de EU-vergadering op 15 juli 2025 waar wordt gesproken over EU-maatregelen tegen Israël. Dit is de laatste keer dat de Kamer debatteert voordat het zomerreces voor acht weken ingaat. Dit is dus hét moment om de druk op te voeren en van de coalitiepartijen te eisen dat ze stoppen met het blokkeren van concrete acties tegen Israël. Gaza kan niet wachten! DESCRIPTION:De Stonewall-rellen (Stonewall riots) vonden eind juni 1969 plaats in de wijk Greenwich Village in New York bij de ontruiming van de homobar Stonewall Inn door de Metropolitan Police. \nNa jaren van treiterijen en geweldplegingen door de politie besloot het bezoekende publiek van mensen binnen de lgbt-gemeenschap terug te vechten. Deze opstand vormt een scheidslijn in de geschiedenis van de holebi-beweging\, daar nooit eerder homo’s en travestieten in zulke grote aantallen hardhandig weerstand boden tegen de op hun gemeenschap gerichte vernederingen door de politie. De optochten die ter herdenking van deze rellen gehouden werden kregen als Gay Pride Parades wereldwijd navolging en in de VS werd juni de Pride-maand. DESCRIPTION:Torture seeks to annihilate the victim’s personality and denies the inherent dignity of the human being.\n\nDespite the absolute prohibition of torture under international law\, torture persist in all regions of the world. Concerns about protecting national security and borders are increasingly used to allow torture and other forms of cruel\, degrading and inhuman treatment. Its pervasive consequences often go beyond the isolated act on an individual; and can be transmitted through generations and lead to cycles of violence. The United Nations has condemned torture from the outset as one of the vilest acts perpetrated by human beings on their fellow human beings. Torture is a crime under international law. According to all relevant instruments\, it is absolutely prohibited and cannot be justified under any circumstances. This prohibition forms part of customary international law\, which means that it is binding on every member of the international community\, regardless of whether a State has ratified international treaties in which torture is expressly prohibited. The systematic or widespread practice of torture constitutes a crime against humanity. DESCRIPTION:The term “conflict-related sexual violence” refers to rape\, sexual slavery\, forced prostitution\, forced pregnancy\, forced abortion\, enforced sterilization\, forced marriage and any other form of sexual violence of comparable gravity perpetrated against women\, men\, girls or boys that is directly or indirectly linked to a conflict. \nThe term also encompasses trafficking in persons when committed in situations of conflict for the purpose of sexual violence or exploitation. A consistent concern is that fear and cultural stigma converge to prevent the vast majority of survivors of conflict-related sexual violence from coming forward to report such violence. Practitioners in the field estimate that for each rape reported in connection with a conflict\, 10 to 20 cases go undocumented. On 19 June 2015\, the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/69/293) proclaimed 19 June of each year the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict\, in order to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence\, to honour the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world and to pay tribute to all those who have courageously devoted their lives to and lost their lives in standing up for the eradication of these crimes. The date was chosen to commemorate the adoption on 19 June 2008 of Security Council resolution 1820 (2008)\, in which the Council condemned sexual violence as a tactic of war and an impediment to peacebuilding. In response to the rise in violent extremism\, the Security Council adopted resolution S/RES/2331 (2016)\, the first to address the nexus between trafficking\, sexual violence\, terrorism and transnational organized crime. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nThe World Day Against Child Labour\, which is held every year on June 12\, is an International Labour Organization (ILO)-sanctioned holiday first launched in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour\, it was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. \nThe ILO\, the United Nations body that regulates the world of work\, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. This day brings together governments\, local authorities\, civil society and international\, workers and employers organizations to point out the child labour problem and define the guidelines to help child labourers. According to ILO’s data\, hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education\, health\, leisure and basic freedoms\, violating this way their rights. Of these children\, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour. These worst forms of child labour include work in hazardous environments\, slavery\, or other forms of forced labour\, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution\, as well as involvement in armed conflict. \n2025 Theme: Progress is clear\, but there’s more to do: let’s speed up efforts! The 2025 World Day will focus on a key milestone: the release of the 2025 global estimates and trends of child labour. This joint report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will offer a comprehensive assessment of global progress toward the elimination of child labour. DESCRIPTION:The Dutch city of Amsterdam thought it could break a decade-long trend of implementing discriminatory algorithms\, its failure raises the question: can these programs ever be fair? \n\nThere’s an ongoing debate about whether algorithms can ever be fair when tasked with making decisions that shape people’s lives. Over the past several years of efforts to use artificial intelligence in this way\, examples of collateral damage have mounted: nonwhite job applicants weeded out of job application pools in the US\, families being wrongly flagged for child abuse investigations in Japan\, and low-income residents being denied food subsidies in India. Proponents of these assessment systems argue that they can create more efficient public services by doing more with less and\, in the case of welfare systems specifically\, reclaim money that is allegedly being lost from the public purse. In practice\, many were poorly designed from the start. They sometimes factor in personal characteristics in a way that leads to discrimination\, and sometimes they have been deployed without testing for bias or effectiveness. In general\, they offer few options for people to challenge—or even understand—the automated actions directly affecting how they live. \nWhen Amsterdam set out to create an AI model to detect potential welfare fraud\, officials thought it could break a decade-plus trend of discriminatory algorithms that had harmed people all over the world. City officials in the welfare department believed they could build technology that would prevent fraud while protecting citizens’ rights. They followed these emerging best practices and invested a vast amount of time and money in a project that eventually processed live welfare applications. But in their pilot\, they found that the system they’d developed was still not fair and effective. Why? Lighthouse Reports\, MIT Technology Review\, and the Dutch newspaper Trouw have gained unprecedented access to the system to try to find out. It helps children develop the cognitive\, physical\, creative\, social\, and emotional skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Restricting opportunities for play directly impedes a child’s well-being and development. In educational settings\, play-based learning has been recognized as an effective approach to engage students actively in the learning process. It helps make learning more enjoyable and relevant\, thereby enhancing motivation and retention of information. Moreover\, play is considered to have a positive impact on promoting tolerance\, resilience\, and facilitating social inclusion\, conflict prevention\, and peacebuilding. In recognition of this\, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has enshrined play as a fundamental right of every child under Article 31. The international day creates a unifying moment at global\, national\, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. It signals a call for policies\, training\, and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings worldwide. \nChildren learn best through play. Play creates powerful learning opportunities across all areas of development – intellectual\, social\, emotional and physical. Through play\, children learn to forge connections with others\, build a wide range of leadership skills\, develop resilience\, navigate relationships and social challenges as well as conquer their fears. When children play\, they feel safe. Children play to make sense of the world around them. More generally\, play provides a platform for children to express and develop imagination and creativity\, which are key skills critical for the technology-driven and innovative world we live in. Playful interactions contribute to the well-being and positive mental health of parents\, caregivers and children. When humanitarian crises turn a child’s world upside down\, it is in play that children can both find safety and respite from adverse experience while also being able to explore and process their experiences with the world. When children are driven from their homes by war\, conflict\, and displacement\, access to nurturing relationships with parents/caregivers and peers are critical buffers from the effects of violence\, distress and other adverse experiences. Play comforts and soothes children. To encourage playful interactions between parents/caregivers and children\, governments and other stakeholders need to create an enabling environment. The theme for 2025 International Day of Play is “Choose Play – Every Day”. DESCRIPTION:It is a sad reality that in situations where armed conflict breaks out\, it is the most vulnerable members of societies – namely children\, who are most affected by the consequences of war. \nThe six most common violations are recruitment and use of children in war\, killing\, sexual violence\, abduction\, attacks on schools and hospitals\, and denial of humanitarian access. On 19 August 1982\, at its emergency special session on the question of Palestine\, the General Assembly\, “appalled at the great number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children victims of Israel’s acts of aggression”\, decided to commemorate 4 June of each year as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical\, mental and emotional abuse. This day affirms the UN’s commitment to protect the rights of children. Its work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child\, the most rapidly and widely ratified international human rights treaty in history. \nFollowing on the ground-breaking Graça Machel report\, which drew global attention to the devastating impact of armed conflict on children\, in 1997 The General Assembly adopted 51/77 Resolution on the Rights of the Child. It was a landmark development in efforts to improve the protection of children in conflict situations. This signalled the start of a new consensus among Member States\, on the need for dedicated attention\, advocacy and coordinated effort\, by the international community\, to address the vulnerabilities and violations faced by children in conflict-related situations. Resolution 51/77 built on existing General Assembly efforts to protect the rights of children\, including through the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocol\, and the annual Rights of the Child resolutions. And it established the mandate of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. \nIn recent years\, the number of violations perpetrated against children have\, in many conflict zones\, increased. More needs to be done to protect the 250 million children living in countries and areas affected by conflict. More must be done to protect children from targeting by violent extremists\, to promote international humanitarian and human rights law\, and to ensure accountability for violations of the rights of children. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides us with the universal masterplan to secure a better future for children. The new agenda includes for the first time a specific target (16.2) to end all forms of violence against children\, and ending the abuse\, neglect and exploitation of children is mainstreamed across several other violence-related targets. \nLinks:\nDay of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

DESCRIPTION:Australia celebrates Mabo Day on June 03\, 2023\, which is so far an official holiday in Torres Shire. \nMabo Day commemorates a historic decision by the High Court of Australia in 1992 by which the assumption that Australia had been a terra nullus at the time when the European settlers came\, was overturned. It was that assumption\, a legal fiction that allowed the settlers to take away the land from the Aboriginals because a terra nullus is land that does not belong to anyone. Mabo Day got its name from Eddie Koiki Mabo\, a man from Torres Strait Island who arose a campaign for Indigenous land rights. DESCRIPTION:Honderdduizenden kinderen hebben het moeilijk op de basisschool omdat ze in armoede opgroeien: stress en oververmoeidheid hebben invloed op de schoolprestaties\, zegt het Jeugdeducatiefonds in het Schoolrapport van Nederland\, het land krijgt daarin een flinke onvoldoende. \n\nEr is bij deze kinderen thuis bijvoorbeeld geen geld voor een fiets of een bed\, en ongeveer 28.000 kinderen dragen geen bril omdat hun ouders dat niet kunnen betalen\, zo meldt het fonds op basis van eigen onderzoek en dat van andere organisaties. Het fonds werd 10 jaar geleden opgericht om in zulke gevallen hulp te bieden\, en werkt nu samen met zo’n 900 van de 6500 basisscholen in Nederland. Het fonds kocht afgelopen jaar bijvoorbeeld voor 229 kinderen een bed\, om te voorkomen dat deze kinderen op de grond moesten slapen of bij een broertje of zusje in bed. “Als kinderen niet goed kunnen zien of kunnen slapen\, kunnen ze ook niet goed leren”\, zegt het fonds in een toelichting.
