DESCRIPTION:Banned Books Week is an annual awareness campaign promoted by the American Library Association (ALA) and Amnesty International\, that celebrates the freedom to read\, draws attention to banned and challenged books\, and highlights persecuted individuals. \nHeld in late September or early October since 1982\, the United States campaign “stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them” and the requirement to keep material publicly available so that people can develop their own conclusions and opinions. The international campaign notes individuals “persecuted because of the writings that they produce\, circulate or read.” Some of the events that occur during Banned Book Week are The Virtual Read-Out and The First Amendment Film Festival. The theme for Banned Books Week 2025: “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.” Banned Books Week will take place October 5 – 11\, 2025. Current efforts to ban books and information held in schools\, libraries\, archives\, and bookstores are a truth close to fiction – namely\, the depiction of extreme censorship by an oppressive regime in George Orwell’s cautionary and prescient tale 1984. The Banned Books Week 2025 theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us\, that censorship has no place in contemporary society\, and that we must defend our rights. ALA recently released the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2024 list and the State of America’s Libraries Report. The majority of book censorship attempts that ALA tracked in 2024 come from organized movements. Pressure groups and government entities that include elected officials\, board members\, and administrators initiated 72% of demands to censor books in school and public libraries. \nThe 120 titles most frequently targeted for censorship during 2024 are all identified on partisan book rating sites\, which provide tools for activists to demand the censorship of library books.  Additionally\, PEN America recorded the highest instances of book censorship in schools and the highest number of unique titles banned during the 2023-2024 school year – more than 4\,000 unique titles were removed in over 10\,000 instances of book bans. PEN America also tracked the influence of pressure groups\, finding that they have undertaken efforts to remove materials in nearly every state. Banned Books Week launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges in libraries\, schools\, and bookstores. The Banned Books Week Coalition\, an international alliance of diverse organizations joined by a commitment to increase awareness of the annual celebration of the freedom to read\, appoints an honorary chair and youth honorary chair to lead Banned Books Week. Past honorary chairs include filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Origin\, 2024)\, literacy champion LeVar Burton (Reading Rainbow\, 2023)\, and banned authors George M. DESCRIPTION:Blasphemy Day\, held each year on September 30\, also known as International Blasphemy Day or International Blasphemy Rights Day\, educates individuals and groups about blasphemy laws and defends freedom of expression\, especially the open criticism of religion which is criminalized in many countries. \nBlasphemy Day was introduced as a worldwide celebration by the Center for Inquiry in 2009. Events worldwide on the first annual Blasphemy Day in 2009 included an art exhibit in Washington\, D.C.\, and a free speech festival in Los Angeles. Blasphemy Rights Day is a day to show solidarity with those who challenge oppressive laws and social prohibitions against free expression\, to support the right to challenge prevailing religious beliefs without fear of violence\, arrest\, or persecution. Blasphemy Rights Day is observed every September 30 to commemorate the publishing of the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons\, which angered religious believers around the world\, many of whom expressed their disapproval with violent protests\, riots\, and in some cases\, murder. While many perceive “blasphemy” as offensive\, this event is not intended to ridicule and insult others. Rather\, it was created as a reaction against those who would seek to take away the right to satirize and criticize a particular set of beliefs given a privileged status over other beliefs. Observing International Blasphemy Rights Day is a way of showing opposition to any resolutions or laws\, binding or otherwise\, which discourage or inhibit freedom of speech of any kind. Uit onderzoek van Ground News blijkt dat NOS-nieuws een hang naar rechts vertoont. Om op te treden tegen onrecht hebben we kloppende kennis nodig. Alleen als ze op de hoogte zijn van wat er in de wereld gebeurt weten ze waar actie nodig is. Eerlijk nieuws is dus noodzakelijk voor het streven naar een rechtvaardige wereld. Of het nu gaat om de klimaat- en ecologische crisis\, ongedocumenteerde mensen\, of de genocide die Israël op de Palestijnen pleegt: NOS geeft vaak geen eerlijk beeld. DESCRIPTION:De Kinderombudsman presenteert het rapport “Opgroeien in onzekerheid. Wat kinderen in armoede ons in de afgelopen 10 jaar hebben verteld over hun leven en welzijn”\, de conclusie is onmiskenbaar: ondanks talloze initiatieven als schoolontbijten\, laptops en sportabonnementen\, blijft het welzijn en de ontwikkeling van kinderen die in armoede opgroeien\, ernstig onder druk staan. \nHet rapport is gebaseerd op data uit het onderzoek ‘Als je het ons vraagt’\, dat tussen 2016 en 2024 vijf keer is uitgevoerd. In totaal deden 9.809 kinderen van 8 tot 18 jaar mee\, van wie 628 kinderen aangaven dat er te weinig geld thuis is. Het onderzoek brengt de kwaliteit van leven in kaart aan de hand van veertien omgevingsvoorwaarden binnen en buiten het gezin\, aangevuld met een rapportcijfer dat kinderen hun eigen leven gaven. In Nederland leeft één op de 28 kinderen in armoede. Dat betekent dat gemiddeld één kind per klas zich zorgen maakt over de (geld)stress van hun ouders\, schooluitjes\, sport\, eten of zelfs de huur. Deze kinderen starten hun leven met een achterstand. Hun ontwikkeling komt onder grote druk te staan door voortdurende stress\, te weinig aandacht thuis en een gebrek aan kansen. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat kinderen die hun leven een rapportcijfer van vijf of lager geven\, ongekend laag scoren op een aantal van de veertien omgevingsvoorwaarden die voor hun ontwikkeling van cruciaal belang zijn. Dit betekent dat hun kwaliteit van leven zo laag is dat hun welzijn en toekomstkansen ernstig in gevaar komen. \nHet rapport laat daarmee zien dat kinderrechten voor deze kinderen in armoede zwaar onder druk staan. De Kinderombudsman roept de demissionair staatssecretaris van Sociale Zaken én de politiek als geheel dringend op om armoede onder kinderen voortvarender aan te pakken. Het Rijk moet gemeenten duidelijke en inhoudelijke richting geven hierover. Dat kan door het Kinderrechtenverdrag als basis te nemen en dit te vertalen naar beleid dat alle levensgebieden van kinderen omvat volgens de veertien omgevingsvoorwaarden. Alleen zo voorkomen we dat gemeenten ieder hun eigen aanpak en prioriteiten kiezen\, met als risico dat kinderen in de ene gemeente wél kansen krijgen\, en in de andere niet. Pas dan pak je kinderarmoede écht aan. Het is tijd dus om de echte opgave onder ogen te zien: losse voorzieningen zijn waardevol\, maar lossen de kern van het probleem niet op. DESCRIPTION:Patient safety is a discipline that emphasizes safety in health care through the prevention\, reduction\, reporting\, and analysis of medical error that often leads to adverse effects. \nThe frequency and magnitude of avoidable adverse events experienced by patients was not well known until the 1990s\, when multiple countries reported staggering numbers of patients harmed and killed by medical errors. Recognizing that healthcare errors impact 1 in every 10 patients around the world\, the World Health Organization calls patient safety an endemic concern. Indeed\, patient safety has emerged as a distinct healthcare discipline supported by an immature yet developing scientific framework. There is a significant transdisciplinary body of theoretical and research literature that informs the science of patient safety. No one should be harmed in health care. Yet thousands of patients across the world suffer avoidable harm\, or are put at risk of injury\, while receiving health care every single day. The 72nd World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA 72.6 ‘Global action on patient safety’ on 25 May 2019. The resolution recognizes patient safety as a global health priority and endorses the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be observed annually on 17 September. World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety. Furthermore\, the Day brings together patients\, families\, caregivers\, communities\, health workers\, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety. DESCRIPTION:The Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. \nDemocracy is as much a process as a goal\, and only with the full participation of and support by the international community\, national governing bodies\, civil society and individuals\, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone\, everywhere. The values of freedom\, respect for human rights and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage are essential elements of democracy. In turn\, democracy provides the natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights. These values are embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and further developed in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights\, which enshrines a host of political rights and civil liberties underpinning meaningful democracies. The link between democracy and human rights is captured in article 21(3) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, which states: \n“The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.” \nThe rights enshrined in the International Covenant on Economic\, Social and Cultural Rights and subsequent human rights instruments covering group rights (e.g.indigenous peoples\, minorities\, people with disabilities) are equally essential for democracy as they ensure an equitable distribution of wealth\, and equality and equity in respect of access to civil and political rights. \nLinks:\nDay of Democracy \nVier de Dag van de Democratie

DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP or DOTROIP) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday\, September 13\, 2007\, by a majority of 144 states in favour\, 4 votes against\, and 11 abstentions. \nThe groundwork toward this declaration began in 1923 and 1925 with the works of Haudenosaunee Chief Deskaheh and Māori T.W. Ratana\, who attempted to bring issues of Canada and New Zealand’s failure to uphold treaties to the League of Nations\, United Nations’ precursor. In May 2016\, Canada officially removed its objector status to UNDRIP\, almost a decade after it was adopted by the General Assembly. By now the other three objectors have\, to varying degrees\, also turned their votes. As a General Assembly Declaration\, UNDRIP is not a legally binding instrument under international law. According to a UN press release it does “represent the dynamic development of international legal norms and it reflects the commitment of the UN’s member states to move in certain directions”; the UN describes it as setting “an important standard for the treatment of indigenous peoples that will undoubtedly be a significant tool toward eliminating human rights violations against the planet’s 370 million indigenous people\, and assisting them in combating discrimination and marginalisation.” UNDRIP codifies “Indigenous historical grievances\, contemporary challenges and socio-economic\, political and cultural aspirations” and is the “culmination of generations-long efforts by Indigenous organizations to get international attention\, to secure recognition for their aspirations\, and to generate support for their political agendas.” Canada Research Chair and faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan Ken Coates argues that UNDRIP resonates powerfully with Indigenous peoples\, while national governments have not yet fully understood its impact. \nLinks:\nUnited Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

DESCRIPTION:Stephen Bantu (Steve) Biko (Koning Willemstad\, 18 december 1946 – Pretoria\, 12 september 1977) was een voorvechter van de burgerrechten in Zuid-Afrika. \nTussen augustus 1975 en september 1977 werd Biko viermaal door het apartheidsregime opgepakt en langdurig ondervraagd. Op 21 augustus 1977 werd hij opgesloten in Port Elizabeth. Hier werd hij telkens voor verhoor meegenomen naar het hoofdbureau van de politie. Op 7 september constateerden artsen verwondingen aan zijn hoofd. Neurologische complicaties negeerden zij. Vijf dagen later verloor Biko het bewustzijn. De aanwezige arts adviseerde ziekenhuisopname\, waarop Biko naakt in de achterbak van een Land Rover naar Pretoria werd getransporteerd. De 1200 km lange rit duurde 12 uur. Enkele uren na aankomst in de Pretoria Central Prison overleed hij\, 30 jaar oud en alleen liggend op de vloer van zijn cel. De lijkschouwing wees uit dat hij was gestorven aan ernstig hersenletsel en inwendige kneuzingen. Sinds maart 1976 was hij de negentiende gevangene\, die onder verdachte omstandigheden was overleden. DESCRIPTION:The Day to Protect Education from Attack was established by a unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly\, calling on UNESCO and UNICEF to raise awareness of the plight of millions of children living in countries affected by conflict. \nThe resolution A/RES/74/275 proclaiming the Day was presented by the State of Qatar and co-sponsored by 62 countries. The General Assembly resolution affirms that governments have the primary responsibility to provide protection and ensure inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels to all learners\, especially those in vulnerable situations. It further emphasizes the need to intensify efforts and increase funding to promote safe and protective school environments in humanitarian emergencies by taking all feasible measures to protect schools\, learners and educational personnel from attack\, refrain from actions that impede children’s access to education\, and facilitate access to education in situations of armed conflict. UNESCO and UNICEF will facilitate the annual observance of the Day in close collaboration with partners within and outside the UN system. DESCRIPTION:On 3 September 2025\, the Dutch Court of Appeal will hear a case brought against the Dutch government by Al Haq\, Al-Mezan\, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights\, and Dutch NGOs Een Ander Joods Geluid (EAJG)\, European Legal Support Center (ELSC)\, Groningen Jabalya\, Netherlands Palestina Komitee\, SOMO\, Stichting Kifaia\, and Stichting Palestina\, and is supported by Erev Rav and Plant een Olijfboom. \nThe case demands an end to the Netherlands’ role in enabling Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza and its unlawful military occupation and colonisation of Palestinian land. These actions are not isolated policies\, but central pillars of a Zionist settler-colonial project rooted in forced displacement\, land theft\, and racial domination. The appeal challenges a ruling issued by The Hague District Court in December 2024\, which acknowledged the Dutch state’s obligations under international law but declined to enforce them. The court accepted the government’s position that arms exports could proceed under a “case-by-case” licensing framework\, even though the International Court of Justice determined that plausible genocide is being carried out in Gaza\, and the Dutch territory remained actively involved in transferring weapons used in that context. The court deemed the government’s “discouragement policy” on trade with illegal settlements as sufficient\, without evaluating its effectiveness or consistency with international law. In doing so\, the court affirmed a model of governance in which legal commitments are treated as symbolic\, accountability is optional\, and bureaucratic procedures replace political responsibility. This appeal is a direct challenge to a system that reduces state complicity in atrocities to a matter of bureaucratic discretion. The Netherlands’ entanglement in Israel’s regime of apartheid and colonisation is not new. It reflects a longer arc of European complicity in Zionist state-building and the violent reordering of Palestinian land\, demography\, and sovereignty. As a former colonial power\, the Netherlands has reconstituted its relationship to empire through trade\, surveillance\, and weapons supply. These entanglements expose the lie of European neutrality. DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of media outlets\, brought together by the campaigning platform Avaaz and Reporters Without Borders (RSF)\, are waging a campaign calling for the protection of Palestinian journalists in Gaza\, the emergency evacuation of reporters seeking to leave the Strip\, an end to impunity for Israeli crimes against Gaza’s reporters and that foreign press be granted independent access to the territory. \nAccording to RSF data\, 220 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip in less than 23 months. On the night of 10 August alone\, the Israeli army killed six journalists in a targeted strike against Al-Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif. Less than a week ago\, on Monday\, 25 August\, the Israeli army killed five journalists in two consecutive strikes. Today\, hundreds of media outlets in over 50 countries are mobilising in solidarity with Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip\, alongside RSF and Avaaz. DESCRIPTION:Enforced disappearance has frequently been used as a strategy to spread terror within the society\, the feeling of insecurity generated by this practice is not limited to the close relatives of the disappeared\, but also affects their communities and society as a whole. \nEnforced disappearance has become a global problem and is not restricted to a specific region of the world. Once largely the product of military dictatorships\, enforced disappearances can nowadays be perpetrated in complex situations of internal conflict\, especially as a means of political repression of opponents. Of particular concern are: \n\n    the ongoing harassment of human rights defenders\, relatives of victims\, witnesses and legal counsel dealing with cases of enforced disappearance;\n    the use by States of counter-terrorist activities as an excuse for breaching their obligations;\n    and the still widespread impunity for enforced disappearance.\n\nSpecial attention must also be paid to specific groups of especially vulnerable people\, like children and people with disabilities. \nOn 21 December 2010\, by its resolution 65/209 the UN General Assembly expressed its deep concern about the increase in enforced or involuntary disappearances in various regions of the world\, including arrest\, detention and abduction\, when these are part of or amount to enforced disappearances\, and by the growing number of reports concerning harassment\, ill-treatment and intimidation of witnesses of disappearances or relatives of persons who have disappeared. DESCRIPTION:I Have a Dream (Nederlands: Ik heb een droom) is de titel van een beroemde rede die Martin Luther King hield op 28 augustus 1963. \nDe rede van bij elkaar 17 minuten hield King voor het Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. De woorden van King inspireerden niet alleen de bezoekers ter plekke\, maar ook elders in de wereld en in latere tijden. De rede hield hij ter gelegenheid van de mars naar Washington die die dag in de stad was aangekomen\, ten overstaan van een publiek van meer dan 250.000 mensen. SUMMARY:Herdenkingsprotest voor kinderslachtoffers in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:Op zondag 24 augustus 2025 vindt voor de dertiende maal een groot herdenkingsprotest plaats voor kinderslachtoffers in Gaza\, op het Vredenburgplein in Utrecht zetten vrijwilligers opnieuw duizenden kinderschoenen neer. \nStichting Plant een Olijfboom roept hiermee op om deze kinderen niet te vergeten en er alles aan te doen om het genocidale bezettingsgeweld door Israel voor altijd te stoppen. Palestijnse kinderen worden niet alleen vermoord met bombardementen\, tankgeschut of kogels van scherpschutters\, maar ook zijn zij bewust uitgehongerd. Leiders van het Israëlische regime kondigden al in oktober 2023 aan niet te willen toestaan dat voedsel\, brandstof of wat dan ook Gaza nog binnen zou komen. En ook rondom maart 2024 zijn tientallen kinderen verhongerd. Deze uithongeringscampagne is in 2025 geïntensiveerd\, waardoor 263 Palestijnen waarvan minstens 112 kinderen verhongerd zijn. Deze kinderen die nu niet meer leven hadden dromen\, levens\, families en een toekomst. Kinderen die nog wel leven in Gaza hebben dat ook\, evenals hun ouders en grootouders. Tijdens het herdenkingsprotest worden namen van vermoorde kinderen gelezen door bekende en minder bekende Nederlanders. Er zijn ook stemmingen over de moties die de Kamerleden een dag eerder hebben ingediend. Op 21 augustus besloot de Kamer om het debat en de aansluitende stemmingen af te breken en op vrijdag 22 augustus te vervolgen. Dit vervolg is na de wekelijkse vergadering van de ministerraad. Minister Caspar Veldkamp van Buitenlandse Zaken\, met wie de Kamer het debat voert over Gaza\, kan daar overleggen over het onderwerp. Tijdens de vergadering kreeg Veldkamp geen steun voor meer maatregelen tegen Israël en nam ontslag. Omdat de vergadering uitliep\, is ook het tweeminutendebat nogmaals uitgesteld. Met een tweeminutendebat kan het commissiedebat (CD) over hetzelfde onderwerp van 7 augustus worden afgerond. De regeling van werkzaamheden\, waarin de Kamer haar agenda bepaalt\, wordt gehouden op verzoek van 38 Kamerleden. Tijdens die regeling kan de Kamer besluiten om het tweeminutendebat te houden. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. \nThe General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/73/296\, designated 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief recognizing the importance of providing victims of acts of violence based on religion or belief and members of their families with appropriate support and assistance in accordance with applicable law. It strongly deplored all acts of violence against persons on the basis of their religion or belief\, as well as any such acts directed against their homes\, businesses\, properties\, schools\, cultural centres or places of worship\, as well as all attacks on and in religious places\, sites and shrines that are in violation of international law. A previous resolution establishing the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism (A/RES/72/165) also recognized that working together to enhance the implementation of existing legal regimes that protect individuals against discrimination and hate crimes\, increasing interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural efforts and expanding human rights education are important first steps in combating incidents of intolerance\, discrimination and violence against individuals on the basis of religion or belief. \nBy proclaiming an International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief\, the General Assembly recalled that States have the primary responsibility to promote and protect human rights\, including the human rights of persons belonging to religious minorities\, including their right to exercise their religion or belief freely. Freedom of religion or belief\, freedom of opinion and expression\, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of association are interdependent\, interrelated and mutually reinforcing. They are enshrined in articles 18\, 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Upholding these rights plays an important role in the fight against all forms of intolerance and of discrimination based on religion or belief. The open\, constructive and respectful debate of ideas\, as well as interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural dialogue\, at the local\, national\, regional and international levels\, can play a positive role in combating religious hatred\, incitement and violence. Furthermore\, the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and full respect for the freedom to seek\, receive and impart information can play a positive role in strengthening democracy and combating religious intolerance. \nLinks:\nDay Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief
