DESCRIPTION:The 8th of September was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1966 to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals\, communities and societies\, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies. \nThe issue of literacy is a key component of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UN’s Sustainable Development Agenda\, adopted by world leaders in September 2015\, promotes universal access to quality education and learning opportunities throughout people’s lives. Sustainable Development Goal 4 has as one of its targets ensuring all young people achieve literacy and numeracy and that adults\, who lack these skills are given the opportunity to acquire them. Since 1967\, UNESCO International Literacy Prizes have rewarded excellence and innovation in the field of literacy. Over 500 projects and programmes undertaken by governments\, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world have been recognized. Through these prestigious Prizes\, UNESCO seeks to support effective literacy practices and encourages the promotion of dynamic literate societies. DESCRIPTION:Paarse Vrijdag is een dag waarop scholieren en studenten door het dragen van de kleur paars op school hun solidariteit kunnen tonen met lhbt+’ers\, in Nederland wordt de dag sinds 2010 ieder jaar op de tweede vrijdag van december gehouden. \nPaarse Vrijdag ontstond naar het voorbeeld van Spirit Day in de Verenigde Staten\, die eerder in 2010 voor het eerst plaatsvond als uiting tegen het pesten van lhbt-jongeren. DESCRIPTION:De Landelijke Studentenvakbond (LSVb) heeft aangekondigd 25 oktober 2023 voor de Tweede Kamer een protest te organiseren tegen de aangekondigde vervijfvoudiging van de rente over de studielening. \nDe verhoging van de rente van 0\,46 procent naar 2\,56 procent leidde al tot grote onrust onder studenten. De renteverhoging heeft een verwoestend effect op zowel huidige studenten als oud-studenten. Honderdduizenden studenten zullen geconfronteerd worden met een fors toenemende studieschuld. Volgens de LSVb wordt de financiële druk op studenten ondraaglijk. Op 25 oktober zal de LSVb samen met studenten bij de Tweede Kamer pleiten voor het stoppen van de renteverhoging en meer compensatie voor studenten. De LSVb heeft eerder al actie gevoerd tegen het leenstelsel\, gebrek aan passende compensatie en eerdere renteverhogingen. Dit leidde tot de herinvoering van de basisbeurs\, maar er moet nog veel meer worden gedaan om de financiële positie van studenten te verbeteren.
