SUMMARY:#TruthNeverDies Day to #EndImpunity for Crimes against Journalists / Dag tegen Straffeloosheid voor Misdaden tegen Journalisten 2021
DESCRIPTION:In 2011\, IFEX launched the International Day to End Impunity campaign and in 2013\, the United Nations designated 2 November as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’ in General Assembly Resolution A/RES/68/163\, the date was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on 2 November 2013. \nThe Resolution urged Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity. This landmark resolution condemns all attacks and violence against journalists and media workers. It also urges Member States to do their utmost to prevent violence against journalists and media workers\, to ensure accountability\, bring to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers\, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies. It further calls upon States to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without undue interference. \nBetween 2006 and 2020\, over 1\,200 journalists have been killed for reporting the news and bringing information to the public. In nine out of ten cases the killers go unpunished. Impunity leads to more killings and is often a symptom of worsening conflict and the breakdown of law and judicial systems. These figures do not include the many more journalists\, who on a daily basis suffer from non-fatal attacks\, including torture\, enforced disappearances\, arbitrary detention\, intimidation and harassment in both conflict and non-conflict situations. Furthermore\, there are specific risks faced by women journalists\, including sexual attacks. \nWorryingly\, only one in ten cases committed against media workers over the past decade has led to a conviction. This impunity emboldens the perpetrators of the crimes and at the same time has a chilling effect on society including journalists themselves. Impunity breeds impunity and feeds into a vicious cycle. When attacks on journalists remain unpunished\, a very negative message is sent that reporting the “embarrassing truth” or “unwanted opinions” will get ordinary people in trouble. Furthermore\, society loses confidence in its own judiciary system which is meant to protect everyone from attacks on their rights. Perpetrators of crimes against journalists are thus emboldened when they realize they can attack their targets without ever facing justice. UNESCO is concerned that impunity damages whole societies by covering up serious human rights abuses\, corruption\, and crime. Read and share the stories of killed journalists #TruthNeverDies. In 2024\, the global commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists will take place on 6-7 November 2024 at at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia under the theme of Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies. \nLinks:\nDay to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists \nVolkstribunaal voor moorden op journalisten begint met eerste hoorzitting

SUMMARY:Opposition to Vladimir Putin in Russia / Protesten tegen (regime van) Poetin
DESCRIPTION:Action in memory of Alexei Navalny at the monument to victims of political repression in St. Petersburg on 16 February 2024\nOpposition to the government of President Vladimir Putin in Russia\, commonly referred to as the Russian opposition\, can be divided between the parliamentary opposition parties in the State Duma and the various non-systemic opposition organizations. \nWhile the former are largely viewed as being more or less loyal to the government and Putin\, the latter oppose the government and are mostly unrepresented in government bodies. According to Russian NGO Levada Center\, about 15% of the Russian population disapproved of Putin in the beginning of 2023. The “systemic opposition” is mainly composed of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF)\, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR)\, A Just Russia – For Truth (SRZP)\, New People and other minor parties; these political groups\, while claiming to be in opposition\, generally support the government’s policies. Major political parties considered to be part of the non-systemic opposition include Yabloko and the People’s Freedom Party (PARNAS)\, along with the unregistered party Russia of the Future and Libertarian Party of Russia (LPR). Other notable opposition groups included the Russian Opposition Coordination Council (KSO) (2012–2013) and The Other Russia (2006–2011)\, as well as various non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Their supporters vary in political ideology\, ranging from liberals\, socialists\, and anarchists\, to Russian nationalists. They are mainly unified by their opposition to Putin and government corruption. However\, a lack of unity within the opposition has also hindered its standing. Opposition figures claim that a number of laws have been passed and other measures taken by Putin’s government to prevent them from having any electoral success. \nLinks:\nTijdens grote demonstraties blijkt hoe bang de Russische autoriteiten zijn voor Navalny’s beweging / Court ruled that Navalny’s three and a half year suspended sentence was to be replaced with a prison sentence / Meerdere nieuwssites berichtten dat Navalny naar een ‘ziekenhuis’ wordt overgeplaatst / Honderden betogers gearresteerd bij pro-Navalny-bijeenkomsten / Leider oppositiegroepering uit vliegtuig gehaald in Sint-Petersburg / VS en VK halen uit naar Rusland om Navalny / Authorities’ Treatment of Navalny is Escalating the Protests \n#UkraineRussianWar #UkraineRussiaCrisis Russisch-Oekraïense oorlog / Russisch-Oekraïens conflict (2021-…) \nDeath and funeral of Alexei Navalny \nProtesters in Moscow chant «Down with Putin» and clap\, passing cars beep in support \n2024 Russian presidential election \nArtists against the Kremlin – exhibition
