DESCRIPTION:At a time when armed conflict has reached historic levels around the world\, journalist killings also reached an all-time high primarily due to the actions of one government: Israel was responsible for two-thirds of all journalist and media worker killings in 2025\, driving the total number killed worldwide last year to a record 129 — the highest ever number documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) since the organization started keeping records more than three decades ago.\, according to the report ‘Record 129 press members killed in 2025; Israel responsible for 2/3 of deaths‘. \nThis marks back-to-back record years for press fatalities due to Israel’s continued and unprecedented targeting of journalists and media workers. More than 60% of the 86 members of the press killed by Israeli fire in 2025 were Palestinians reporting from Gaza\, where human rights groups and U.N. experts agree a genocide is taking place. Over three-quarters of all press deaths in 2025 were in conflict settings. While the number of journalists and media workers killed in Ukraine and Sudan increased slightly in 2025 compared to the previous year\, to four and nine deaths in each country respectively\, the numbers were still very low compared to Israel\, which remains a significant exception. The rising number of journalist deaths globally is fueled by a persistent culture of impunity for attacks on the press: Very few transparent investigations have been conducted into the 47 cases* of targeted killings (classified as “Murder” in CPJ’s longstanding methodology) documented by CPJ in 2025 — the highest number of journalists deliberately killed for their work in the past decade — and no one has been held accountable in any of the cases. These killings of journalists violate international humanitarian law\, which stipulates that journalists are civilians and should never be deliberately targeted. \nThe continued failure of government leaders to protect the press or hold their attackers to account also lays the groundwork for more killings\, including in countries not at war. Journalists were killed in Mexico\, India\, and the Philippines in 2025\, all countries that have persistently failed to secure justice for journalists’ murders. DESCRIPTION:Kinderen en jongeren worden dagelijks blootgesteld aan een stortvloed aan marketing voor energiedrankjes\, in winkels\, op sociale media\, in games\, in de sport en bij vrijetijdsevenementen: overal is energiedrank. \nNiet voor niets stijgen de omzetten van deze drankjes jaar na jaar en die groei gaat nog wel even verder\, zo is de voorspelling. Dat is niet toevallig\, hier ligt een uitgekiende marketingstrategie aan ten grondslag. Want hoe jonger kinderen worden verleid\, hoe groter de kans dat ze merkvast blijven terwijl ze opgroeien. Merken investeren zo veel mogelijk in marketingstrategieën die nieuw zijn en niet traditioneel\, waar jonge mensen zich door aangesproken voelen. Monster Energy zegt het zelf al: ‘wij zijn geen drank\, wij zijn een lifestyle.’ Dit is niet onschuldig. Consumptie van energiedrank kan\, ook bij lage dosis\, leiden tot slapeloosheid\, hoge bloeddruk\, hartkloppingen en mentale problemen. Ook neemt de kans op overgewicht en tandbederf toe. Juist kinderen en jongeren in ontwikkeling zijn kwetsbaar. Kinderen en jongeren moeten tegen deze agressieve marketing in bescherming worden genomen. Zij hebben recht op een goede gezondheid. Andere landen nemen daarin wel hun verantwoordelijkheid en hebben al een leeftijdsgrens ingesteld voor de verkoop van energiedranken aan minderjarigen en maken korte metten met de marketing. Waarom Nederland dan niet? Het wordt tijd dat er een leeftijdsgrens van 18 jaar komt voor de verkoop van energiedrankjes en de ongebreidelde marketing aan banden wordt gelegd. De dag heeft ook betrekking op een dichter\, journalist of blogger\, deze dag is voor iedereen die betrokken is bij het geschreven of gesproken woord. PEN roept wereldwijd autoriteiten op om iedereen vrij te laten die uitsluitend gevangen is gezet omdat gebruik werd gemaakt van het recht op vrijheid van meningsuiting\, recht op vrijheid van vreedzame vereniging en/of vergadering. DESCRIPTION:Blasphemy Day\, held each year on September 30\, also known as International Blasphemy Day or International Blasphemy Rights Day\, educates individuals and groups about blasphemy laws and defends freedom of expression\, especially the open criticism of religion which is criminalized in many countries. \nBlasphemy Day was introduced as a worldwide celebration by the Center for Inquiry in 2009. Events worldwide on the first annual Blasphemy Day in 2009 included an art exhibit in Washington\, D.C.\, and a free speech festival in Los Angeles. Blasphemy Rights Day is a day to show solidarity with those who challenge oppressive laws and social prohibitions against free expression\, to support the right to challenge prevailing religious beliefs without fear of violence\, arrest\, or persecution. Blasphemy Rights Day is observed every September 30 to commemorate the publishing of the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons\, which angered religious believers around the world\, many of whom expressed their disapproval with violent protests\, riots\, and in some cases\, murder. While many perceive “blasphemy” as offensive\, this event is not intended to ridicule and insult others. Rather\, it was created as a reaction against those who would seek to take away the right to satirize and criticize a particular set of beliefs given a privileged status over other beliefs. Observing International Blasphemy Rights Day is a way of showing opposition to any resolutions or laws\, binding or otherwise\, which discourage or inhibit freedom of speech of any kind. DESCRIPTION:On 22 and 23 July 2025\, the High Court of Justice in London will hear the Wikimedia Foundation’s legal challenge to the Categorisation Regulations of the United Kingdom (UK)’s Online Safety Act (OSA).  \nThe Wikimedia Foundation\, the non-profit that operates Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects\, announced its legal challenge earlier this year\, arguing that the regulations endanger Wikipedia and the global community of volunteer contributors who create the information on the site. DESCRIPTION:In 2011\, IFEX launched the International Day to End Impunity campaign and in 2013\, the United Nations designated 2 November as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’ in General Assembly Resolution A/RES/68/163\, the date was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on 2 November 2013. \nThe Resolution urged Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity. This landmark resolution condemns all attacks and violence against journalists and media workers. It also urges Member States to do their utmost to prevent violence against journalists and media workers\, to ensure accountability\, bring to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers\, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies. It further calls upon States to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without undue interference. \nBetween 2006 and 2020\, over 1\,200 journalists have been killed for reporting the news and bringing information to the public. In nine out of ten cases the killers go unpunished. Impunity leads to more killings and is often a symptom of worsening conflict and the breakdown of law and judicial systems. These figures do not include the many more journalists\, who on a daily basis suffer from non-fatal attacks\, including torture\, enforced disappearances\, arbitrary detention\, intimidation and harassment in both conflict and non-conflict situations. Furthermore\, there are specific risks faced by women journalists\, including sexual attacks. \nWorryingly\, only one in ten cases committed against media workers over the past decade has led to a conviction. This impunity emboldens the perpetrators of the crimes and at the same time has a chilling effect on society including journalists themselves. Impunity breeds impunity and feeds into a vicious cycle. When attacks on journalists remain unpunished\, a very negative message is sent that reporting the “embarrassing truth” or “unwanted opinions” will get ordinary people in trouble. Furthermore\, society loses confidence in its own judiciary system which is meant to protect everyone from attacks on their rights. Perpetrators of crimes against journalists are thus emboldened when they realize they can attack their targets without ever facing justice. UNESCO is concerned that impunity damages whole societies by covering up serious human rights abuses\, corruption\, and crime. DESCRIPTION:Zaterdagmiddag 19 oktober 2024 zullen duizenden betogers dansend door Amsterdam trekken om op te komen voor het demonstratierecht. \nDit mensenrecht\, dat een fundament vormt voor elke democratie\, staat onder druk door de huidige regering\, die bovendien gezichtsbedekking tijdens demonstraties wil gaan verbieden. Als subversieve kritiek op dit voorstel organiseren de demonstranten een unieke ‘balaclava modeshow’ tijdens de mars. Recent hebben verschillende protesten in Nederland te maken gehad met onrechtmatig politieoptreden. Ook ADEV (Amsterdam Danst Ergens Voor)\, de organisatie achter de mars\, kreeg in 2022 te maken met repressie. Na 10 jaar vreedzaam demonstreren trad de politie bijzonder agressief op waarbij tientallen onschuldige demonstranten werden aangevallen en gearresteerd. Dit incident staat niet op zichzelf: Amnesty International bracht deze week een rapport uit over het demonstratierecht dat onder druk staat in Nederland. Een van de controversiële maatregelen die de regering onderzoekt\, is het verbieden van gezichtsbedekking tijdens demonstraties. \n\n\n\n\nADEV onderstreept het belang van anonimiteit voor mensen die niet zomaar deel kunnen nemen aan het publieke debat. “Met dit verbod criminaliseert de regering demonstranten en beperkt ze hun vrijheid van meningsuiting\,” aldus Mike Vermaak\, een van de organisatoren van ADEV. Als protest organiseert ADEV tijdens de mars een balaclava modeshow\, waarbij deelnemers worden aangemoedigd om kleurrijke en creatieve gezichtsbedekking te dragen. Verder zijn er meer dan 10 geluidswagens van de partij die net zoals elk jaar een route rijden dwars door de stad\, gevolgd door duizenden aanhangers. De subversieve parade van Amsterdam Danst Ergens Voor (ADEV) is een collectieve beweging van kraakpanden\, soundsystems en sympathisanten dat jaarlijks op de derde zaterdag van oktober door de Amsterdamse straten danst. DESCRIPTION:Blasphemy Day\, held each year on September 30\, also known as International Blasphemy Day or International Blasphemy Rights Day\, educates individuals and groups about blasphemy laws and defends freedom of expression\, especially the open criticism of religion which is criminalized in many countries. \nBlasphemy Day was introduced as a worldwide celebration by the Center for Inquiry in 2009. Events worldwide on the first annual Blasphemy Day in 2009 included an art exhibit in Washington\, D.C.\, and a free speech festival in Los Angeles. Blasphemy Rights Day is a day to show solidarity with those who challenge oppressive laws and social prohibitions against free expression\, to support the right to challenge prevailing religious beliefs without fear of violence\, arrest\, or persecution. Blasphemy Rights Day is observed every September 30 to commemorate the publishing of the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons\, which angered religious believers around the world\, many of whom expressed their disapproval with violent protests\, riots\, and in some cases\, murder. While many perceive “blasphemy” as offensive\, this event is not intended to ridicule and insult others. Rather\, it was created as a reaction against those who would seek to take away the right to satirize and criticize a particular set of beliefs given a privileged status over other beliefs. Observing International Blasphemy Rights Day is a way of showing opposition to any resolutions or laws\, binding or otherwise\, which discourage or inhibit freedom of speech of any kind. DESCRIPTION:Day for Universal Access to Information:\nThe Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly to be held on 28 September. \nInitially the day (commonly called the Access to Information Day) was designated by the UNESCO General Conference. It was inaugurated in November 2015 and was first held on 28 September 2016. The day had been recognised as International Right to Know Day since 2002 and was developed by international civil society advocates beginning in 2012. The UNESCO resolution creating the day was pushed by African civil society groups seeking greater information transparency. Currently only 17 African Union member states have adopted national right to information laws\, and groups like Open Government Partnership hope that the recognition of the right to information will “provide an important platform for all stakeholders at national level to discuss the adoption and effective implementation of national right to information laws in line with continental and international standards and obligations.” However\, African civil society groups like MISA Zimbabwe have noted that states like Zimbabwe which do have Right to Information laws still have a long way to go to ensure they improve governance. In 2016\, MISA Zimbabwe used Access to Information Day to criticise Zimbabwe’s poor information transparency provisions\, noting that\, “While Zimbabwe was one of the first African countries to adopt an access to information law in the form of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA)\, the law in question is a far cry from its purported import and impact.” \nRight To Know Day:\nThe decision to celebrate and promote 28 September as the International Right to Know Day was taken on the last day of a Freedom of Information litigation conference held 26-28 September 2002 in Sofia\, Bulgaria. \nRepresentatives of Freedom of Information (FOI) organizations from 15 countries took part – Albania\, Armenia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Bulgaria\, Georgia\, Hungary\, India\, Latvia\, Macedonia\, Mexico\, Moldova\, Rumania\, Slovakia\, South Africa\, and USA\, as well as representatives of international organizations active in the FOI field. On 28 September 2002\, the FOI activists established the International Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIAnet)\, Access to Information Programme (AIP) being its co-founder and active member. The members of the newly found FOIAnet agreed to collaborate in promotion of the individual right of access to information and open\, transparent governance and adopted a Memorandum setting forth the goals and activities of the network. Today\, the members of the FOIAnet are over 200 organizations and civil groups from around the globe which exchange knowledge and experience and undertake international initiatives for better freedom of information standards. \nFOI activists around the globe organize a variety of events and initiatives on 28 September to raise awareness on the right of information and to campaign for open\, democratic societies in which there is full citizen empowerment and participation in government. Conferences\, trainings\, competitions\, awards ceremonies\, rock and pop concerts\, theatre performances\, movies\, launch of info-requesting campaigns and new web sites\, focused publications\, etc. aim to further promote this fundamental human right and encourage citizens\, journalists and NGOs in their search for government held information. In some countries\, the Right to Know Day elaborated in Right to Know Weeks. De 10.000 mensen die nu worden geweerd\, zijn van harte welkom bij de herdenking “Knuffels\, bloemen en kaarsen”. DESCRIPTION:Media freedom and pluralism is flailing across Europe\, and in some countries\, are on its last legs. \nThe European Media Freedom Act will bring some improvements\, but on its own is not enough to rescue a struggling media landscape. Liberties Media Freedom Report 2024 reveals that media freedom and media pluralism are close to breaking point in many EU countries\, while in others\, a near-total overhaul is required to address chronic\, systemic issues with only a limited number of exceptions. The continued erosion of media freedom is evidenced by widespread harassment of journalists and governments restricting access to information. Meanwhile\, heavy media ownership concentration and threats to the independence and finances of public service media contribute to a shrinking media plurality. A diverse and free media environment is crucial for democracy because we rely on independent news outlets to hold our politicians accountable and keep us informed. The pattern of declining media freedom – which shows the overarching trends documented in last year’s report remain unaddressed – goes hand-in-hand with Europe’s democratic backsliding. Based on findings from over two dozen civil liberties organisations from 19 countries across the EU\, the report covers media freedom and pluralism\, safety and protection of journalists\, and freedom of expression and access to information in 2023\, a year when the media landscape was shaped not only by new legislation (Anti-SLAPP Directive\, Digital Services Act\, European Media Freedom Act)\, but also elections (Poland\, the Netherlands\, Slovakia) and regional conflicts (Russia-Ukraine\, Middle East). Additionally\, this year’s report features a new chapter dedicated to the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) – a landmark piece of legislation that has myriad implications for media freedom and pluralism in the EU. \nLinks:\nLiberties’ Media Freedom Report 2024: Freedom of the Press Reaching Breaking Point

DESCRIPTION:The Israel-Gaza war has taken a severe toll on journalists since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack against Israel on October 7 and Israel declared war on the militant Palestinian group\, launching strikes on the blockaded Gaza Strip. \nThe Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is investigating all reports of journalists and media workers killed\, injured\, or missing in the war\, which has led to the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992. As of April 26\, 2024\, CPJ’s preliminary investigations showed at least 97 journalists and media workers were among the more than 35\,000 killed since the war began on October 7—with more than 34\,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the West Bank and 1\,200 deaths in Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told Reuters and Agence France Press news agencies in October that it could not guarantee the safety of their journalists operating in the Gaza Strip\, after they had sought assurances that their journalists would not be targeted by Israeli strikes\, according to a Reuters report. Journalists in Gaza face particularly high risks as they try to cover the conflict during the Israeli ground assault\, including devastating Israeli airstrikes\, disrupted communications\, supply shortages\, and extensive power outages. As of April 25\, 2024: \n\n97 journalists and media workers were confirmed dead: 92 Palestinian\, 2 Israeli\, and 3 Lebanese.\n16 journalists were reported injured.\n4 journalists were reported missing.\n25 journalists were reported arrested.\nMultiple assaults\, threats\, cyberattacks\, censorship\, and killings of family members.\n\nCPJ is also investigating numerous unconfirmed reports of other journalists being killed\, missing\, detained\, hurt\, or threatened\, and of damage to media offices and journalists’ homes. The list published here includes names based on information obtained from CPJ’s sources in the region and media reports. It includes all journalists* involved in news-gathering activity. It is unclear whether all of these journalists were covering the conflict at the time of their deaths\, but CPJ has included them in our count as we investigate their circumstances.
