DESCRIPTION:The Day to Protect Education from Attack was established by a unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly\, calling on UNESCO and UNICEF to raise awareness of the plight of millions of children living in countries affected by conflict. \nThe resolution A/RES/74/275 proclaiming the Day was presented by the State of Qatar and co-sponsored by 62 countries. The General Assembly resolution affirms that governments have the primary responsibility to provide protection and ensure inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels to all learners\, especially those in vulnerable situations. It further emphasizes the need to intensify efforts and increase funding to promote safe and protective school environments in humanitarian emergencies by taking all feasible measures to protect schools\, learners and educational personnel from attack\, refrain from actions that impede children’s access to education\, and facilitate access to education in situations of armed conflict. UNESCO and UNICEF will facilitate the annual observance of the Day in close collaboration with partners within and outside the UN system. SUMMARY:Herdenkingsprotest voor kinderslachtoffers in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:Op zondag 24 augustus 2025 vindt voor de dertiende maal een groot herdenkingsprotest plaats voor kinderslachtoffers in Gaza\, op het Vredenburgplein in Utrecht zetten vrijwilligers opnieuw duizenden kinderschoenen neer. \nStichting Plant een Olijfboom roept hiermee op om deze kinderen niet te vergeten en er alles aan te doen om het genocidale bezettingsgeweld door Israel voor altijd te stoppen. Palestijnse kinderen worden niet alleen vermoord met bombardementen\, tankgeschut of kogels van scherpschutters\, maar ook zijn zij bewust uitgehongerd. Leiders van het Israëlische regime kondigden al in oktober 2023 aan niet te willen toestaan dat voedsel\, brandstof of wat dan ook Gaza nog binnen zou komen. En ook rondom maart 2024 zijn tientallen kinderen verhongerd. Deze uithongeringscampagne is in 2025 geïntensiveerd\, waardoor 263 Palestijnen waarvan minstens 112 kinderen verhongerd zijn. Deze kinderen die nu niet meer leven hadden dromen\, levens\, families en een toekomst. Kinderen die nog wel leven in Gaza hebben dat ook\, evenals hun ouders en grootouders. Tijdens het herdenkingsprotest worden namen van vermoorde kinderen gelezen door bekende en minder bekende Nederlanders. Zanger Douwe Bob zal naast het namen lezen ook muziek maken om daarmee aandacht te vestigen op Gaza. UNODC\, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto\, assists States in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (Trafficking in Persons Protocol). The Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment\, transportation\, transfer\, harbouring or receipt of persons\, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion\, of abduction\, of fraud\, of deception\, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person\, for the purpose of exploitation. DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, the United Nations General Assembly declared 15 July as World Youth Skills Day\, to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship. \nSince then\, World Youth Skills Day events have provided a unique opportunity for dialogue between young people\, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions\, firms\, employers’ and workers’ organizations\, policy makers and development partners. Participants have highlighted the ever-increasing significance of skills as the world is embarking on a transition towards a sustainable model of development. Education and training are central to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The vision of the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030 is fully captured by Sustainable Development Goal 4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Education 2030 devotes considerable attention to technical and vocational skills development\, specifically regarding access to affordable quality. \nTechnical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET); the acquisition of technical and vocational skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship; the elimination of gender disparity and ensuring access for the vulnerable. In this context\, TVET is expected to address the multiple demands of an economic\, social and environmental nature by helping youth and adults develop the skills they need for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship\, promoting equitable\, inclusive and sustainable economic growth\, and supporting transitions to green economies and environmental sustainability. \nTVET can equip youth with the skills required to access the world of work\, including skills for self-employment. TVET can also improve responsiveness to changing skill-demands by companies and communities\, increase productivity and increase wage levels. TVET can reduce access barriers to the world of work\, for example through work-based learning\, and ensuring that skills gained are recognised and certified. TVET can also offer skills development opportunities for low-skilled people who are under- or unemployed\, out of school youth and individuals not in education\, employment and training (NEETs). World Youth Skills Day 2021 will again take place in a challenging context due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. DESCRIPTION:The World Day Against Child Labour\, which is held every year on June 12\, is an International Labour Organization (ILO)-sanctioned holiday first launched in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour\, it was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. \nThe ILO\, the United Nations body that regulates the world of work\, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. This day brings together governments\, local authorities\, civil society and international\, workers and employers organizations to point out the child labour problem and define the guidelines to help child labourers. According to ILO’s data\, hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education\, health\, leisure and basic freedoms\, violating this way their rights. Of these children\, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour. These worst forms of child labour include work in hazardous environments\, slavery\, or other forms of forced labour\, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution\, as well as involvement in armed conflict. \n2025 Theme: Progress is clear\, but there’s more to do: let’s speed up efforts! The 2025 World Day will focus on a key milestone: the release of the 2025 global estimates and trends of child labour. This joint report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will offer a comprehensive assessment of global progress toward the elimination of child labour. Although the detailed data are not yet available\, the estimates and trends identified will guide policy debates and calls for renewed commitment and investment. On this World Day\, ILO calls for full ratification of ILO Convention No. 138 on the Minimum Age and the implementation of ILO Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour.  Their effective ratification and implementation remain essential to achieving the goals set by the Durban Call to Action\, which urges us to aim for for strengthened prevention\, protection\, and partnerships to eliminate child labour. DESCRIPTION:It is a sad reality that in situations where armed conflict breaks out\, it is the most vulnerable members of societies – namely children\, who are most affected by the consequences of war. \nThe six most common violations are recruitment and use of children in war\, killing\, sexual violence\, abduction\, attacks on schools and hospitals\, and denial of humanitarian access. On 19 August 1982\, at its emergency special session on the question of Palestine\, the General Assembly\, “appalled at the great number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children victims of Israel’s acts of aggression”\, decided to commemorate 4 June of each year as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical\, mental and emotional abuse. This day affirms the UN’s commitment to protect the rights of children. Its work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child\, the most rapidly and widely ratified international human rights treaty in history. \nFollowing on the ground-breaking Graça Machel report\, which drew global attention to the devastating impact of armed conflict on children\, in 1997 The General Assembly adopted 51/77 Resolution on the Rights of the Child. It was a landmark development in efforts to improve the protection of children in conflict situations. This signalled the start of a new consensus among Member States\, on the need for dedicated attention\, advocacy and coordinated effort\, by the international community\, to address the vulnerabilities and violations faced by children in conflict-related situations. Resolution 51/77 built on existing General Assembly efforts to protect the rights of children\, including through the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocol\, and the annual Rights of the Child resolutions. And it established the mandate of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. \nIn recent years\, the number of violations perpetrated against children have\, in many conflict zones\, increased. More needs to be done to protect the 250 million children living in countries and areas affected by conflict. More must be done to protect children from targeting by violent extremists\, to promote international humanitarian and human rights law\, and to ensure accountability for violations of the rights of children. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides us with the universal masterplan to secure a better future for children. The new agenda includes for the first time a specific target (16.2) to end all forms of violence against children\, and ending the abuse\, neglect and exploitation of children is mainstreamed across several other violence-related targets. \nLinks:\nDay of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

DESCRIPTION:Honderdduizenden kinderen hebben het moeilijk op de basisschool omdat ze in armoede opgroeien: stress en oververmoeidheid hebben invloed op de schoolprestaties\, zegt het Jeugdeducatiefonds in het Schoolrapport van Nederland\, het land krijgt daarin een flinke onvoldoende. \n\nEr is bij deze kinderen thuis bijvoorbeeld geen geld voor een fiets of een bed\, en ongeveer 28.000 kinderen dragen geen bril omdat hun ouders dat niet kunnen betalen\, zo meldt het fonds op basis van eigen onderzoek en dat van andere organisaties. Het fonds werd 10 jaar geleden opgericht om in zulke gevallen hulp te bieden\, en werkt nu samen met zo’n 900 van de 6500 basisscholen in Nederland. Het fonds kocht afgelopen jaar bijvoorbeeld voor 229 kinderen een bed\, om te voorkomen dat deze kinderen op de grond moesten slapen of bij een broertje of zusje in bed. “Als kinderen niet goed kunnen zien of kunnen slapen\, kunnen ze ook niet goed leren”\, zegt het fonds in een toelichting. Toch groeien in Nederland honderdduizenden kinderen op in een gezin met armoedestress. Geen warme jas\, geen eigen bed\, geen goede bril. Kortom: géén basisvoorzieningen\, wél obstakels die groei en ontwikkeling in de weg staan. Nationaal Fonds Kinderhulp ziet een zorgwekkende stijging van ruim 40% in hulp voor deze basisvoorzieningen. Zonder hulp blijven kansen onbenut en dromen onbereikbaar. Daarom riep Kinderhulp de Dag van de Kinderarmoede in het leven. Omdat geen enkel kind de dupe mag zijn van armoede. Wij zorgen voor directe\, concrete hulp – zonder gedoe\, zonder stigma. Maar we doen meer. We zetten kinderarmoede op de kaart\, delen kennis en trekken in Den Haag aan de bel zo hard we kunnen. Help mee. Op 17 april\, de Dag van de Kinderarmoede. These original WishMakers were inspired by the impact the wish had on Chris and vowed to do more. A global movement was born. Today\, Make-A-Wish has been granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses for 44 years\, in 50 countries across 6 continents all over the world. More than 585\,000 wishes have been granted since then. But the work is far from done. Thousands of eligible children are waiting for their wishes to be granted. DESCRIPTION:2009 marked the 75th anniversary of the canonisation of John Bosco\, the “Father and Teacher of Youth”\, to mark the anniversary\, Jugend Eine Welt launched Street Children’s Day the same year. \nThe “Street Children’s Day” is commemorated every year on the January 31st and should highlight the situation of these children and young people and raise funds for projects run by the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco in favour of street children worldwide. A „Street Children‘s Day“ information package is sent to parishes\, interested teachers and youth groups at the beginning of January. The package included material for a service for children\, general background information on the subject of street children and suggestions for campaigns. This material is also available online (in German). Since the first Street Children’s Day in 2009 it gained more and more attention in Austrian media\, especially in 2011 when the auxiliary bishop of Vienna Franz Scharl cleaned shoes on the streets to commemorate the day. \nLinks:\nStreet Children’s Day

DESCRIPTION:The right to education is enshrined in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The declaration calls for free and compulsory elementary education. \nThe Convention on the Rights of the Child\, adopted in 1989\, goes further to stipulate that countries shall make higher education accessible to all. When it adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015\, the international community recognized that education is essential for the success of all 17 of its goals. Sustainable Development Goal 4\, in particular\, aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030. Education offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future. But about 265 million children and adolescents around the world do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school. DESCRIPTION:Een op de drie Nederlandse jongeren geeft aan verslaafd te zijn aan sociale media; socialemediakanalen weten dat ze ons pijn doen\, maar ze vinden hun omzet belangrijker. \nEuropees Commissievoorzitter Von der Leyen heeft beloofd om de verslavende functies te verbannen tijdens haar nieuwe ambtstermijn\, maar de technologiereuzen zullen hard terugvechten. ‘Ze weten dat we eraan sterven. Het interesseert ze niet. Ze verdienen er geld mee.’ Dit zijn de woorden van Taylor\, die als twaalfjarige in een socialemediaverslaving belandde\, met depressie en zelfmoordpogingen als gevolg. Uit gelekte documenten blijkt dat Mark Zuckerbergs bedrijf Meta al járen weet dat hun producten ontworpen zijn om verslavend te werken\, en dat tieners het hardst worden getroffen. Recent onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat bijna 5% van de Nederlandse scholieren last heeft van problematisch socialemediagebruik. De platformen hacken letterlijk ons brein om onze aandacht vast te houden\, en de jonge hersenen van kinderen zijn nog in volle ontwikkeling en daardoor veel vatbaarder voor manipulatie. \nVoorzitter van de Europese Commissie Von der Leyen heeft beloofd een einde te maken aan deze verslavende functies\, maar de technologiereuzen dringen aan op uitstel! Laten we een enorme oproep van over heel Europa lanceren en bescherming eisen voor onszelf en onze (klein)kinderen. Als genoeg mensen zich aansluiten\, brengen we onze boodschap rechtstreeks naar Von der Leyen. Taylor ervoer naar eigen zeggen ‘ontwenningsverschijnselen’ toen hun telefoon werd afgepakt: ‘Het was ondraaglijk.’ In de geestelijke gezondheidszorg is er zelfs een woord voor de angst om niet bereikbaar te zijn via mobiele telefoon: nomofobie. Iedereen kan te maken krijgen met een socialemediaverslaving\, maar kinderen lopen het hoogste risico. Uit een recente enquête blijkt dat de helft van de gen Z’ers zou willen dat TikTok nooit was uitgevonden. Platformen hebben onder publieke druk een paar dingetjes aangepast\, maar dat is niet genoeg. \nDe manier waarop deze platformen werken\, moet dringend fundamenteel veranderen. En dat begint intussen: de Amerikaanse staat Californië heeft onlangs een wet aangenomen tegen verslavende ontwerpen. Het Europees Parlement dringt erop aan dat deze functies verboden worden\, en de nieuwe Europese Commissie\, die op dit moment aantreedt\, steunt dat voorstel. We hebben tijdens haar vorige ambtstermijn samengewerkt met voorzitter Von der Leyen om baanbrekende socialemediaregelgeving erdoor te krijgen. Dit hebben we geleerd: ze kan alle steun gebruiken om de lobbyisten van de grote techbedrijven het hoofd te bieden. De Avaaz-gemeenschap staat al langer aan de frontlinie om te strijden voor een betere online omgeving. We hebben onderzoek gefinancierd naar hoe desinformatie zich verspreidt en cruciale momenten heeft beïnvloed\, zoals verkiezingen\, burgerconflicten en de pandemie. Samen met haar partners heeft Avaaz voor socialemediaregelgeving gezorgd die de mensenrechten in de EU waarborgt.
