DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking is a crime that exploits children\, men and women for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex. \nTrafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year\, thousands of men\, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers\, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking\, whether as a country of origin\, transit or destination for victims. UNODC\, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto\, assists States in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (Trafficking in Persons Protocol). The Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment\, transportation\, transfer\, harbouring or receipt of persons\, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion\, of abduction\, of fraud\, of deception\, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person\, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include\, at a minimum\, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation\, forced labour or services\, slavery or practices similar to slavery\, servitude or the removal of organs. The World Day against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/68/192. Theme 2026\, “Trapped Behind the Scam\,” draws attention to a rapidly expanding form of human trafficking in which transnational organized crime groups exploit people to carry out industrial-scale financial fraud. Victims are trafficked for forced criminality and compelled to participate in online scam operations. DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, the United Nations General Assembly declared 15 July as World Youth Skills Day\, to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship. \nThe world of work is changing rapidly. Artificial intelligence\, the green transition and growing social complexity are transforming how we learn\, work and participate in society. To thrive in this changing landscape\, young people need more than technical skills alone. They need a balanced set of competencies that combines technical\, digital\, AI\, green\, social-emotional and civic skills with the human qualities that technology cannot replace. Under the theme “Skills for a shared future”\,  this year’s World Youth Skills Day activities will spotlight the urgent need for innovative youth skills programmes—initiatives that empower young people not only to adapt\, but to lead with empathy\, bridge cultural divides\, build resilience\, and actively shape a more sustainable and inclusive tomorrow. Youth unemployment remains a major economic and social challenge worldwide. According to the ILO’s Global Employment Trends for Youth 2024\, the global youth unemployment rate fell to 13% in 2023 – a 15-year low and below the pre-pandemic level of 13.8%. However\, recovery has been uneven: in the Arab States\, East Asia\, and South-East Asia\, rates were higher in 2023 than in 2019. Meanwhile\, one in five young people globally – and over a quarter of young women – were NEET (not in employment\, education\, or training)\, with young women’s NEET rate (28.1%) more than double that of young men (13.1%). Even for those who work\, decent jobs remain scarce. Over half of young workers are in informal employment\, and in low-income countries\, three in four hold only self-employment or temporary jobs. Investment in green and blue sectors could create 8.4 million youth jobs by 2030\, but these must come with decent working conditions – including fundamental rights like equal pay\, collective bargaining\, and protection from harassment. \nEducation and training are central to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The vision of the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030 is fully captured by Sustainable Development Goal 4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Education 2030 devotes considerable attention to technical and vocational skills development\, specifically regarding access to affordable quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET); the acquisition of technical and vocational skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship; the elimination of gender disparity and ensuring access for the vulnerable. In this context\, TVET is expected to address the multiple demands of an economic\, social and environmental nature by helping youth and adults develop the skills they need for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship\, promoting equitable\, inclusive and sustainable economic growth\, and supporting transitions to green economies and environmental sustainability. TVET can equip youth with the skills required to access the world of work\, including skills for self-employment. TVET can also improve responsiveness to changing skill-demands by companies and communities\, increase productivity and increase wage levels. TVET can reduce access barriers to the world of work\, for example through work-based learning\, and ensuring that skills gained are recognised and certified. SUMMARY:Unshielded Childhood: Palestinian children and teenagers killed by Israel in the West Bank in 2025 - publication
DESCRIPTION:Since October 2023\, Israel has been waging an extensive assault on all aspects of Palestinian existence in the West Bank. \nThis includes a broad\, systematic violation of human rights\, first among them the most basic right – to life. Lethal\, unbridled violence employed by the Israeli regime’s armed forces\, including the military and settler militias\, has led to an unprecedent increase in the killing of Palestinians\, and particularly the killing of children and teenagers by Israeli forces. Over the course of two years and eight months\, from 7 October 2023 to 7 June 2026\, Israeli forces killed 235 Palestinian children and teenagers in the West Bank. Five others were killed by settlers. In 2025 alone\, the year that is the focus of this investigation\, Israeli forces killed 54 Palestinian children and teenagers in the West Bank. The unprecedented scale of killing of Palestinian children and teenagers by Israeli forces is the result of a reckless open-fire policy\, expanded to be even more permissive than in the past\, that is currently being implemented in the West Bank. Those responsible do not try to hide this policy; rather\, they give it full systemic backing\, as reflected in the remarks of Central Command Chief Avi Bluth\, who publicly boasted that “we are killing like we haven’t killed since 1967.” Bluth’s claim that “96% of those killed were involved in terrorism” – an allegation exposed as a brazen lie by documentation of the circumstances of death in B’Tselem’s list of Palestinian fatalities – also reflects the Israeli system’s routine identification of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces as “terrorists” or “terror operatives”\, including civilians who were not members of an armed organization and posed no danger at the time they were killed. B’Tselem’s investigation ‘Unshielded Childhood: Palestinian children and teenagers killed by Israel in the West Bank in 2025‘ of these cases found that only two of the 54 Palestinian children and teenagers killed in the West Bank in 2025 were armed with firearms at the time they were shot. This identification creates\, de facto\, systemic impunity for killing. The Israeli system does not stop at justifying these killings after the fact. It also refrains almost entirely from holding the perpetrators accountable. According to data from the human rights organization Yesh Din\, since the start of the war in October 2023\, no indictments are known to have been filed in cases involving killings in the West Bank. Yet the immunity guaranteed in advance and the absence of any real demand for accountability after these crimes are committed are not confined to the legal sphere. They are also reflected in “public impunity” that stems from the Israeli public’s indifference to the killing of Palestinian children. In this context\, the sharp rise in the killing of children in the West Bank by Israeli forces cannot be separated from the more than 21\,000 Palestinian children that Israel has killed as part of its genocidal assault on the Gaza Strip since October 2023. The fact that even this inconceivable number has not led to public demands for a change in the policy of killing shows how far the dehumanization of Palestinians has gone in Israeli eyes. DESCRIPTION:The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory\, including East Jerusalem\, and Israel examines violations and crimes against and affecting Palestinian children\, including serious physical and psychological harm by the Israeli security forces since 7 October 2023 resulting in the death of at least 20\,179 and injury of 44\,143 children. \nThe paper ‘The essence of childhood has been destroyed: Israel’s deliberate targeting of Palestinian children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 7 October 2023‘ describes the deliberate targeting and killing of Palestinian children\, including post-ceasefire since the October 2025 Gaza peace plan. The Commission also examines a sharp increase in violence perpetrated by members of Israeli settlers against Palestinian children in the West Bank\, including East Jerusalem. The Commission examines the use of torture\, inhumane and degrading treatment\, including sexual and gender-based violence\, against Palestinian children\, particularly during mass arrests and in detention. It analyses pattern of Israel’s targeting of critical infrastructure essential to children\, such as healthcare facilities and its short- to long-term consequences\, as well as the impact of reproductive violence on newborns\, resulting in poor neonatal health and birthing outcomes; attacks on orphanages and schools\, impacting the loss of care for orphans and unaccompanied children\, and inducing academic harm and learning disruptions for children\, respectively. The Commission examines the impact of the conditions of life imposed by Israel in Gaza resulting in preventable mortality of children\, exacerbating morbidity\, and serious mental trauma from the relentless and widespread attacks by Israel over two years – collectively revealing severe\, multi-layered harm to Palestinian children’s survival\, health\, and development. Further\, the Commission examines how Israeli soldiers mock and weaponize symbols of childhood in Gaza\, raising ethical\, disciplinary and legal questions about the conduct of the Israeli security forces during the ground invasion of Gaza. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nThe World Day Against Child Labour\, which is held every year on June 12\, is an International Labour Organization (ILO)-sanctioned holiday first launched in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour\, it was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. \nThe ILO\, the United Nations body that regulates the world of work\, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. This day brings together governments\, local authorities\, civil society and international\, workers and employers organizations to point out the child labour problem and define the guidelines to help child labourers. According to ILO’s data\, hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education\, health\, leisure and basic freedoms\, violating this way their rights. Of these children\, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour. These worst forms of child labour include work in hazardous environments\, slavery\, or other forms of forced labour\, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution\, as well as involvement in armed conflict. \n2026 Theme: Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults. The 2026 World Day comes at a decisive moment. The 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour\, held in Marrakech\, reaffirmed the urgent need to accelerate action and translate commitments into concrete results. The Marrakech Global Framework for Action against Child Labour provides a concrete roadmap and indicators for tackling child labour through integrated responses that address root causes and protect every child’s rights. Under the slogan “Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults”\, the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour campaign calls for reinforced action on the policies that prevent child labour and withdrawn children from it:  quality education\, universal social protection\, decent work and adequate livelihoods for adults\, stronger laws and enforcement\, better data and monitoring systems\, and responsible action in agriculture and supply chains. This action is urgently needed. DESCRIPTION:The Day of Play\, observed on 11 June\, creates a unifying moment at global\, national\, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. \nIt signals a call for policies\, training\, and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings worldwide. Beyond mere recreation\, it is a universal language spoken by people of all ages\, transcending national\, cultural\, and socio-economic boundaries. This shared passion fosters a sense of community and national pride. It also fosters resilience\, creativity\, and innovation in individuals. For children in particular\, play helps build relationships and improves control\, overcome trauma\, and problem-solving. It helps children develop the cognitive\, physical\, creative\, social\, and emotional skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Restricting opportunities for play directly impedes a child’s well-being and development. In educational settings\, play-based learning has been recognized as an effective approach to engage students actively in the learning process. It helps make learning more enjoyable and relevant\, thereby enhancing motivation and retention of information. Moreover\, play is considered to have a positive impact on promoting tolerance\, resilience\, and facilitating social inclusion\, conflict prevention\, and peacebuilding. In recognition of this\, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has enshrined play as a fundamental right of every child under Article 31. The international day creates a unifying moment at global\, national\, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. It signals a call for policies\, training\, and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings worldwide. \nChildren learn best through play. Play creates powerful learning opportunities across all areas of development – intellectual\, social\, emotional and physical. Through play\, children learn to forge connections with others\, build a wide range of leadership skills\, develop resilience\, navigate relationships and social challenges as well as conquer their fears. When children play\, they feel safe. Children play to make sense of the world around them. More generally\, play provides a platform for children to express and develop imagination and creativity\, which are key skills critical for the technology-driven and innovative world we live in. Playful interactions contribute to the well-being and positive mental health of parents\, caregivers and children. When humanitarian crises turn a child’s world upside down\, it is in play that children can both find safety and respite from adverse experience while also being able to explore and process their experiences with the world. When children are driven from their homes by war\, conflict\, and displacement\, access to nurturing relationships with parents/caregivers and peers are critical buffers from the effects of violence\, distress and other adverse experiences. Play comforts and soothes children. To encourage playful interactions between parents/caregivers and children\, governments and other stakeholders need to create an enabling environment. 2026 Theme: ‘Protect Play\, Protect Childhood‘. Throughout June\, UNICEF will also be promoting expert tips and guidance for parents on everything from the science of play to fun activities for all the family. DESCRIPTION:Every day\, children living in wars across the globe are facing unspeakable horrors: they are not safe sleeping in their homes or playing outside\, learning in school or seeking medical care at hospitals. From killing and maiming\, abduction and sexual violence\, to attacks on education and health facilities\, and the denial of the humanitarian assistance that they desperately need\, children are being caught in the crosshairs of warring parties at a staggering scale. \nThe United Nations Secretary-General’s Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict reveals that violence against children in armed conflict reached unprecedented levels in 2024\, with a 25 per cent increase in grave violations compared with the previous year. The United Nations verified 41\,370 grave violations against children\, affecting 22\,495 children worldwide. The highest numbers of grave violations were verified in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (8\,554)\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (4\,043)\, Somalia (2\,568)\, Nigeria (2\,436) and Haiti (2\,269). Killing and maiming remained the most prevalent grave violation\, affecting 11\,967 children. Most casualties resulted from explosive ordnance\, including explosive remnants of war\, mines and improvised explosive devices\, as well as crossfire and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.Thousands of children were recruited and used by armed forces and armed groups\, often in combat or support roles. The sharp rise in cases involving recruitment\, abduction and other overlapping violations highlights the growing risks faced by children in conflict settings. The United Nations verified a significant rise in conflict-related sexual violence against children\, including a dramatic increase in gang rape. Girls were disproportionately affected\, while boys were also subjected to sexual violence. The violation remains severely underreported because of stigma\, fear of reprisals\, lack of services and concerns for survivors’ safety.Denial of humanitarian access reached alarming levels in 2024. Parties to conflict attacked aid convoys and humanitarian personnel\, imposed movement restrictions\, interfered with relief operations and created administrative barriers\, leaving children without access to healthcare\, education\, protection and other essential services. The United Nations verified nearly 2\,000 attacks on schools and hospitals in 2024\, making these essential civilian facilities increasingly unsafe for children. Attacks on schools and hospitals\, as well as their military use\, continued to disrupt children’s access to education and healthcare. The destruction of civilian infrastructure and attacks on protected facilities further increased children’s vulnerability in conflict-affected areas. Ending and preventing grave violations against children remains central to the United Nations mandate on children and armed conflict. Reclame is geen onschuldige keuze-informatie. Bedrijven steken er niet voor niets zoveel geld in: het werkt. Kinderen zijn daar al helemaal niet tegen opgewassen. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk liet zien dat bijvoorbeeld een overdags verbod op junkfoodreclame echt verschil maakt. De voedingsindustrie boekt recordwinsten\, en de zorgkosten betalen wij met z’n allen. De overheid verzaakt haar plicht om de volksgezondheid te beschermen (Grondwet artikel 22). Zes op de tien jongeren maken zich er regelmatig tot heel vaak zorgen over. Voor 40% van de jongeren namen die zorgen de afgelopen jaren toe. Terwijl 78% van de jongeren klimaatverandering als een serieus vraagstuk voor Nederland ziet\, voelt de helft van de jongeren zich niet gehoord door de overheid bij beslissingen over het klimaat. Als het gaat om verantwoordelijkheid\, kijken jongeren in de eerste plaats naar de overheid (44%)\, gevolgd door bedrijven (25%) en individuen (19%). Tegelijkertijd is er stevige kritiek van jongeren op het huidige beleid: 54% vindt dat de overheid niet genoeg doet en 26% vindt zelfs dat er veel te weinig gebeurt. Dit blijkt uit een representatief onderzoek onder 1.775 jongeren van 12 t/m 29 jaar van State of Youth NL. Het Europees Agentschap voor de grens- en kustbewaking Frontex meldde in 2025 iets meer dan 12.500 illegale grensoverschrijdingen langs de Westelijke Balkanroute. Dat is een daling van 42% ten opzichte van het voorgaande jaar. Dit lagere aantal wordt toegeschreven aan investeringen in strengere grenshandhaving en maatregelen tegen mensensmokkel. DESCRIPTION:Op woensdag 29 april 2026 van 16:20 tot 16:25 luiden meer dan 700 klokken door heel Nederland voor gewortelde kinderen die in onzekerheid leven over hun toekomst in Nederland\, daarmee is het oorspronkelijke doel van 420 klokken – één klok voor ieder geworteld kind in Nederland – ruim overstegen. \nMet de landelijke actie vragen de deelnemende kerken aandacht voor kinderen die in Nederland zijn opgegroeid\, hier naar school gaan en geworteld zijn in de samenleving\, maar ondanks jarenlang verblijf nog altijd te maken hebben met onzekerheid over hun verblijfsstatus. Aan de landelijke overheid wordt om een structurele en rechtvaardige oplossing gevraagd voor alle gewortelde kinderen die slachtoffer zijn geworden van jarenlange trage procedures. Het argument dat procedures sneller moeten is inmiddels deels ondervangen door het Europese migratiepact\, dat inmiddels door de Tweede Kamer is aangenomen en moet leiden tot snellere procedures in de toekomst. Met het klokkenluiden wordt letterlijk en figuurlijk de stem van deze kinderen versterkt. Waar hun stem in het publieke en politieke debat vaak te zacht blijft om gehoord te worden\, kunnen kerken die stem helpen dragen door op hetzelfde moment hun klokken te luiden. De organisatie: “Kinderen die hier geworteld zijn\, verdienen het om gezien en gehoord te worden. Met deze actie geven kerken in heel Nederland een krachtig en hoorbaar signaal van medemenselijkheid\, rechtvaardigheid en solidariteit.” De symboliek van het tijdstip is bewust gekozen: 16:20 uur (‘twintig over vier’) verwijst naar de 420 gewortelde kinderen voor wie aandacht wordt gevraagd. Toch groeien in Nederland honderdduizenden kinderen op in een gezin met armoedestress. Geen warme jas\, geen eigen bed\, geen goede bril. Kortom: géén basisvoorzieningen\, wél obstakels die groei en ontwikkeling in de weg staan. Nationaal Fonds Kinderhulp ziet een zorgwekkende stijging van ruim 40% in hulp voor deze basisvoorzieningen. Zonder hulp blijven kansen onbenut en dromen onbereikbaar. Daarom riep Kinderhulp de Dag van de Kinderarmoede in het leven. Omdat geen enkel kind de dupe mag zijn van armoede. Kinderhulp zorgt voor directe\, concrete hulp – zonder gedoe\, zonder stigma. Maar ze doen meer. DESCRIPTION:Een Rechtvaardige Straat is een plek waar we dit ten volle kunnen ervaren en waar niet één activiteit het andere onmogelijk maakt\, het is niet normaal dat veel straten nu zo gevaarlijk zijn dat er IEDERE DAG twee mensen overlijden en dertig mensen zwaargewond raken. \nNog niet zo lang geleden dienden straten voor van alles en nog wat. Het was de ruimte tussen de huizen waar mensen elkaar ontmoetten\, kinderen speelden en ieder zijn gang ging. Sinds auto’s van de lopende band komen\, lijkt de straat nog maar 1 doel te vervullen; maximale efficiëntie en gebruik door de auto. De andere doelen zijn in de verdrukking geraakt en dat heeft de straat onrechtvaardiger gemaakt. Dat kan beter en moet anders. Een rechtvaardige straat is een plek waar we de rijkdom van de openbare ruimte ten volle kunnen ervaren en benutten. Waar niet één activiteit\, zoals ons verplaatsingsgedrag\, andere activiteiten bedreigt of onmogelijk maakt. Met de groei van steden\, de gemeenschap en de veranderende wereld zullen we op een nieuwe manier onze straten moeten inrichten om een leefbare\, gezonde en eerlijke stad te bouwen. DESCRIPTION:Extinction Rebellion lijmt 35 Amsterdamse middelbare scholen binnen ringweg A10 dicht\, oproep aan  kabinet Jetten: “Geef onze tieners een reden om naar school te gaan!” \nIn de nacht van 4 op 5 maart 2026 hebben rebellen van Extinction Rebellion de deuren van zo’n 35 Amsterdamse middelbare scholen binnen de ring dichtgelijmd\, waardoor de scholen ontoegankelijk zijn. Ook gebruikten zij kettingen om de schoolhekken af te sluiten. Bij iedere school lieten ze een boodschap achter: “Het is 2026\, klimaatdoelen worden niet gehaald en in de kerndoelen voor het onderwijs komt de urgentie van de klimaat- en ecologische crisis niet naar voren. We stevenen af op een catastrofe. Nederland\, kom in opstand! Geef onze tieners een reden om naar school te gaan!” Volgens Unicef misten in 2024 tenminste 242 miljoen kinderen in 85 landen onderwijs door hittegolven\, stormen\, overstromingen en droogtes veroorzaakt door de klimaatcrisis. De Wereldbank kwam\, ook in 2024\, tot vergelijkbare conclusies. Zuid-Azië werd het zwaarst getroffen: 128 miljoen kinderen kregen te maken met schoolstoringen. In Europa ging het om ongeveer een miljoen kinderen. Naast deze verstoringen zijn er miljoenen kinderen die helemaal geen onderwijs krijgen. DESCRIPTION:International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) is a global collaborative campaign to raise awareness and promote an increased appreciation and deeper understanding of the challenges faced by children and adolescents with cancer\, the survivors and their families.\n\nICCD spotlights the need for more equitable access to treatment and care for all children with cancer\, everywhere. Every year\, more than 400\,000 children and adolescents below 20\, are diagnosed with Childhood Cancer. The rate of survival depends on the region\, with 80% survival in most High Income Countries but as low as 20% only in Low and MIddle Income Countries. The Target Goal of the WHO Global Childhood Cancer Initiative is to eliminate all pain and suffering of children fighting cancer and achieve at least 60% survival for all children diagnosed with cancer around the world by 2030. DESCRIPTION:The right to education is enshrined in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The declaration calls for free and compulsory elementary education. \nThe Convention on the Rights of the Child\, adopted in 1989\, goes further to stipulate that countries shall make higher education accessible to all. When it adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015\, the international community recognized that education is essential for the success of all 17 of its goals. Sustainable Development Goal 4\, in particular\, aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030. Education offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future. But about 265 million children and adolescents around the world do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school.
