DESCRIPTION:The UN Human Rights Office published a report on arbitrary\, prolonged and incommunicado detention by Israeli authorities\, affecting thousands of Palestinians from 7 October 2023 until 30 June 2024. \nThe report also covers allegations of torture and other forms of cruel\, inhuman and degrading treatment\, including sexual abuse of women and men. Since 7 October\, thousands of Palestinians – including medical staff\, patients and residents fleeing the conflict\, as well as captured fighters – have been taken from Gaza to Israel\, usually shackled and blindfolded. Thousands more have been detained in the West Bank and Israel. They have generally been held in secret\, without being given a reason for their detention\, access to a lawyer or effective judicial review\, the report states. At least 53 Palestinian detainees are known to have died in Israeli military facilities and prisons since the horrific attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups against Israeli civilians on 7 October. \nThe staggering number of men\, women\, children\, doctors\, journalists and human rights defenders detained since 7 October\, most of them without charge or trial and held in deplorable conditions\, along with reports of ill-treatment and torture and violation of due process guarantees\, raises serious concerns regarding the arbitrariness and the fundamentally punitive nature of such arrests and detention\, said UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk. In Gaza\, mostly men and adolescent boys have been detained. Many have been taken into custody while sheltering in schools\, hospitals and residential buildings\, or at checkpoints during their displacement from north to south\, the report finds. The Israeli military does not usually explain publicly the basis for taking Palestinians into custody in Gaza\, although it has in some cases alleged affiliation with Palestinian armed groups or their political wings. Israel has also not provided information regarding the fate or whereabouts of many of those detained\, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been denied access to facilities where they are held. \nConditions in military-run detention facilities appear worse\, the report states\, adding children were among those held\, in some cases jointly with adults. Detainees said they were held in cage-like facilities\, stripped naked for prolonged periods\, wearing only diapers. Their testimonies told of prolonged blindfolding\, deprivation of food\, sleep and water\, and being subjected to electric shocks and being burnt with cigarettes. Some detainees said dogs were released on them\, and others said they were subjected to waterboarding\, or that their hands were tied and they were suspended from the ceiling. Some women and men also spoke of sexual and gender-based violence. Accounts of hostages taken by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups last October also described appalling conditions of captivity\, including lack of food\, water and poor sanitary conditions\, and lack of fresh air and sunlight. \nSome described being beaten while being taken into Gaza\, or seeing other hostages being beaten while in captivity; receiving surgery or stitches without anaesthetic. There were also reports of sexual and gender-based violence in captivity. In addition\, the report criticises the Palestinian Authority for continuing to carry out arbitrary detention and torture or other ill-treatment in the West Bank\, reportedly principally to suppress criticism and political opposition. The High Commissioner reiterated his call for the immediate release of all hostages still held in Gaza. All Palestinians arbitrarily detained by Israel must be released. DESCRIPTION:How reliable are the death tolls from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza? \nIt has been one of the enduring questions of the war\, with the MoH producing the widely used figure of more than 38\,000 Palestinians killed to date. Israeli officials have repeatedly disputed the civilian toll – highlighting the MoH’s Hamas connections and publicly claiming its numbers are false. US President Joe Biden also initially said he had “no confidence” in the death tolls. In response\, the ministry has periodically released lists of names and IDs of Palestinians killed. In the largest and most in-depth public analysis of the MoH data yet\, Airwars used open source monitoring to independently identify nearly 3\,000 full names of civilian victims killed in the first 17 days of the war. Every name is listed below\, linked to individual reports detailing where and how they died. Where possible the reports include personal stories of lives lost. By comparing those victims’ names with the first list produced by the MoH\, this investigation found a high correlation between the official MoH data and what Palestinian civilians reported online – with 75% of publicly reported names also appearing on the MoH list. The research only relates to the initial weeks of the war – and evidence suggests the MoH figures have become less accurate as Gaza’s health infrastructure has been decimated by the war. Dit blijkt vandaag uit het nieuwe Oxfam-rapport Water War Crimes: Sinds het begin van de oorlog op 7 oktober 2023 vernietigen Israëlische militaire aanvallen elke drie dagen vijf locaties van de water- en sanitaire infrastructuur in Gaza. Sinds 26 mei 2024 is de waterproductie in Gaza met 84% gedaald als gevolg van de vernietiging van de waterinfrastructuur en invoerbeperkingen voor brandstof\, elektriciteit en reserveonderdelen voor water en sanitaire voorzieningen in Gaza. De externe leveringen van het Israëlische nationale waterbedrijf Mekorot aan Gaza daalden met 78%. Israël heeft 70% van alle rioolpompen en 100% van alle afvalwaterzuiveringsinstallaties vernietigd\, evenals de belangrijkste laboratoria voor het testen van de waterkwaliteit in Gaza. DESCRIPTION:The Nakba (Arabic: النكبة\, romanized: an-Nakbah\, ‘the “disaster”\, “catastrophe”\, or “cataclysm”‘)\, also known as the Palestinian Catastrophe\, was the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948\, and the permanent displacement of a majority of the Palestinian Arabs. \nThe term is used to describe both the events of 1948 and the ongoing persecution\, displacement\, and occupation of the Palestinians\, both in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip\, as well as in Palestinian refugee camps throughout the region. The foundational events of the Nakba took place during and shortly after the 1948 Palestine war\, including 78% of Mandatory Palestine being declared as Israel\, the expulsion and flight of 700\,000 Palestinians\, the related depopulation and destruction of over 500 Palestinian villages by Zionist militias and subsequent geographical erasure\, the denial of the Palestinian right of return\, the creation of permanent Palestinian refugees and the “shattering of Palestinian society”. The expulsion of the Palestinians has since been described by some historians as ethnic cleansing. In 1998\, Yasser Arafat proposed that Palestinians should mark the 50th anniversary of the Nakba declaring 15 May\, the day after Israeli independence in 1948\, as Nakba Day\, formalizing a date that had been unofficially used as early as 1949.The Nakba greatly influenced the Palestinian culture and is a foundational symbol of Palestinian identity\, together with “Handala“\, the keffiyeh and the symbolic key. DESCRIPTION:Als nazaten van genocide\, verdrijving en onderdrukking voelt een groep Armeense\, Joodse\, en Palestijnse Nederlanders zich geschoffeerd door de Nederlandse houding\, die wil dicteren wie en op welke manier mogen worden herdacht\, en sluit zich aan bij de alternatieve herdenking op 3 mei 2024 omdat zij zich niet welkom voelt op de dodenherdenking. \nDe Nederlandse overheid heeft afgeroepen om de herdenking in capaciteit te halveren en om iedereen te fouilleren. De 10.000 mensen die nu worden geweerd\, zijn van harte welkom bij de herdenking “Knuffels\, bloemen en kaarsen”. De herdenking vindt plaats tussen het Anne Frank huis en het homomonument\, op 3 mei tussen 18:00 en 19:30. De herdenking is een burgerinitiatief bestaande uit een brede groep vrijwilligers met diverse achtergronden. Zij vindt het ongepast dat de staat wil bepalen hoe mensen een plek geven aan hun rouw. DESCRIPTION:De Armeense genocide (Armeens: Հայոց Ցեղասպանութիւն\, Hayots tseghaspanutyun)\, Turks: Ermeni Soykırımı)\, door Armeniërs traditioneel aangeduid met Medz Yeghern (Armeens: Մեծ Եղեռն\, “Grote Misdaad”)\, is de naam voor de volkerenmoord gepleegd op tussen de 1 en 1\,5 miljoen Armeniërs in het Ottomaanse Rijk ten tijde van het regime van de Jonge Turken. \nDe startdatum is 24 april 1915\, de dag dat de Ottomaanse autoriteiten ongeveer 250 Armeense intellectuelen en leiders van de gemeenschap in Istanboel oppakten en arresteerden. De genocide werd tijdens en na de Eerste Wereldoorlog in twee fases uitgevoerd: het grootschalig doden van de weerbare mannelijke bevolking door middel van massamoord en onderwerping van het leger van dienstplichtigen tot dwangarbeid\, gevolgd door de deportatie van vrouwen\, kinderen\, ouderen en zieken die op dodenmarsen moesten tot de Syrische Woestijn. De gedeporteerden werden verstoken van voedsel en water en onderworpen aan diefstal\, verkrachting en moord. Ook andere inheemse en christelijke etnische groepen werden op dezelfde wijze gericht uitgeroeid door de Ottomaanse regering. De genocide was niet alleen gericht tegen de Armeniërs. Zo werden ook Arameeërs (Shabo\, de genocide op Arameeërs in het kort\, 2018)\, Grieken en Assyriers het slachtoffer van deze genocide. \nDe Armeense genocide wordt gezien als een van de eerste moderne genocides\, omdat geleerden wijzen op de georganiseerde wijze waarop de moorden op de Armeniërs werden uitgevoerd\, en het is het tweede meest bestudeerde geval van genocide na de Holocaust. Robert Fisk stelt in zijn boek “De grote beschavingsoorlog” dat de Armeense genocide een voorloper van de Holocaust was\, waarbij ook enkele Duitsers betrokken waren. De nazi’s zouden deze uitroeiings- en verzwijgingstactieken enige decennia later opnieuw toepassen. Winston Churchill waarschuwde herhaaldelijk tegen deze praktijken: “De geschiedenis zal vruchteloos speuren naar het woord ‘Armenië’.” Een deel van de historici\, inclusief verschillende Turkse historici\, zoals Taner Akçam\, Fatma Muge Gocek en Halil Berktay en de vermoorde Hrant Dink\, zijn het over het algemeen eens dat een genocide plaatsvond. \nEen ander deel van de historici\, waaronder enkele Westerse historici die gespecialiseerd zijn in de geschiedenis van het Ottomaanse Rijk zoals Bernard Lewis\, Justin McCarthy en Gilles Veinstein\, houden het bij deportatie en massamoord van Armeniërs\, waarbij vaak etnische zuivering wordt erkend. Echter vinden zij het niet uitermate afwijken van andere totalitaire oorlogssituaties en het niet vergelijkbaar met bijvoorbeeld de Holocaust. De internationale discussie richt zich vooral op wat de precieze definitie van genocide is en wie in deze bepaalt dat ze hier daadwerkelijk van toepassing is. Turkije\, de staat die het Ottomaanse Rijk opvolgde\, ontkent dat het woord genocide een goede term is voor de massamoord op Armeniërs die in 1915 begon onder de Ottomaanse heerschappij. In Turkije wordt de genocide dan ook vaak de Armeense kwestie genoemd. DESCRIPTION:GAZA STRIP: Famine is imminent as 1.1 million people\, half of Gaza\, experience catastrophic food insecurity. \nThe findings of the Famine Review Committee (FRC) review confirm that Famine in the North Gaza and Gaza Governorates is now projected and imminent and is expected to become manifest from mid-March 2024 to May 2024. The Famine threshold for acute food insecurity has already been far exceeded and the steeply increasing trend in malnutrition data indicates that it is highly likely that the Famine threshold for acute malnutrition has also been exceeded. The FRC expects the upward trend in non-trauma mortality to accelerate and for all Famine thresholds to be passed imminently. The IPC acute food insecurity analysis conducted in December 2023 warned of a risk that Famine may occur by the end of May 2024 if an immediate cessation of hostilities and sustained access for the provision of essential supplies and services to the population did not take place. Since then\, the conditions necessary to prevent famine have not been met and the latest evidence confirms that Famine is imminent in the northern governorates and projected to occur anytime between mid-March and May 2024. According to the most likely scenario\, both North Gaza and Gaza Governorates are classified in IPC Phase 5 (Famine) with reasonable evidence\, with 70% (around 210\,000 people) of the population in IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe). \n \nContinued conflict and the near-complete lack of access to the northern governorates for humanitarian organizations and commercial trucks will likely compound heightened vulnerabilities and extremely limited food availability\, access and utilization\, as well as access to healthcare\, water\, and sanitation. The famine threshold for household acute food insecurity has already been far exceeded and\, given the latest data showing a steeply increasing trend in cases of acute malnutrition\, it is highly likely that the famine threshold for acute malnutrition has also been exceeded. The upward trend in non-trauma mortality is also expected to accelerate\, resulting in all famine thresholds likely to be passed imminently. The southern governorates of Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis\, and the Governorate of Rafah\, are classified in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency). However\, in a worst-case scenario\, these governorates face a risk of Famine through July 2024. The entire population in the Gaza Strip (2.23 million) is facing high levels of acute food insecurity. Between mid-March and mid-July\, in the most likely scenario and under the assumption of an escalation of the conflict including a ground offensive in Rafah\, half of the population of the Gaza Strip (1.11 million people) is expected to face catastrophic conditions (IPC Phase 5)\, the most severe level in the IPC Acute Food Insecurity scale. SUMMARY:Géén defensieverdrag met Israël! - petitie
DESCRIPTION:Nederland moet afzien van een verdrag met het Israëlische leger dat in Gaza verantwoordelijk is voor talloze ernstige oorlogsmisdaden. Ben je het hiermee eens? Teken dan de petitie. \nIn de Palestijnse Gazastrook voltrekt zich momenteel een regelrechte humanitaire catastrofe. Sinds de wrede en alom veroordeelde aanval van Hamas van 7 oktober 2023 maakt het Israëlische leger zich er schuldig aan het bombarderen\, uithongeren en gedwongen verplaatsen van de burgerbevolking. Er zijn al tenminste 30 duizend doden gevallen\, grotendeels burgers\, en nog veel meer gewonden. Gaza is grotendeels onleefbaar gemaakt en zowat alle ruim twee miljoen inwoners zijn ontheemd. Het Internationaal Gerechtshof acht het plausibel dat Israël zich schuldig maakt aan genocide. Daarnaast verbood het Haagse Gerechtshof onlangs de levering door Nederland van onderdelen van F-35-vliegtuigen waarmee Israël de Palestijnse Gazastrook bombardeert. Dit vanwege het risico dat met de F-35’s ernstige schendingen van het humanitair oorlogsrecht worden gepleegd. Desondanks werkt Nederland militair samen met Israël. Er is kennisuitwisseling tussen de Nederlandse krijgsmacht en die van Israël. Ook trainen Nederlandse militairen in Israël\, en andersom. Precieze details over deze militaire samenwerking worden door het kabinet overigens geheimgehouden. En nu staat Nederland op het punt om een defensieverdrag met Israël te sluiten. Dit verdrag regelt de aanwezigheid van Israëlische militairen op Nederlands grondgebied en vice versa. \nHet zal toekomstige samenwerking met het Israëlische leger\, dat nu Gaza vernietigt\, vergemakkelijken. Het verdrag ligt ter goedkeuring in de Eerste Kamer\, nadat de Tweede Kamer in april 2023 een grote meerderheid van de Tweede Kamer stemde voor het sluiten van een defensieverdrag met Israël. Het doel van het verdrag is om de juridische status te regelen van het defensiepersoneel van Nederland en Israël bij aanwezigheid op elkaars grondgebied\, dit is een versteviging van de militaire samenwerking met een land dat mensenrechten schendt. Toen waren er al overtuigende redenen om het verdrag niet te steunen\, zoals voortdurende bezetting\, uitbreiding van illegale nederzettingen en apartheid. Daar komt de vernietiging van Gaza\, mogelijk genocide\, nu bij. Militaire samenwerking met Israël geeft geen pas en Nederland moet dan ook geen defensieverdrag met Israël sluiten\, zeker niet onder de huidige omstandigheden. Het is naar alle maatstaven onaanvaardbaar om zaken te doen met een regering die zich schuldig maakt aan excessief geweld tegen een burgerbevolking. Maar het kan anders: de Eerste Kamer moet nog stemmen over het sluiten van het defensieverdrag en dus kunnen we het defensieverdrag tegenhouden. DESCRIPTION:In September 2015\, the United Nations General Assembly established 9 December as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. \nThe 9th of December is the anniversary of the adoption of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the “Genocide Convention”). DESCRIPTION:The UN Human Rights Office issued an assessment of human rights concerns in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. \nThe assessment was initiated following serious allegations of human rights violations against Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim communities brought to the attention of the UN Human Rights Office and UN human rights mechanisms since late 2017\, particularly in the context of the Chinese Government’s policies and measures to combat terrorism and “extremism”. The assessment is based on a rigorous review of documentary material currently available to the Office\, with its credibility assessed in accordance with standard human rights methodology. Particular attention was given to the Government’s own laws\, policies\, data and statements. The Office also requested information and engaged in dialogue and technical exchanges with China throughout the process. The information was assessed against applicable international human rights law\, and builds on the work of a number of UN human rights mechanisms.
