DESCRIPTION:Cities for Life Day is a worldwide festivity that supports the abolition of the death penalty\, it is celebrated on November 30 of each year. \nCesare Beccaria was one of the greatest Italian Enlightenment writers\, who was noted for his masterpiece Of Crimes and Punishments (1764)\, which was later translated into 22 languages. In it\, Beccaria put forth some of the first modern arguments against the death penalty. His treatise was also the first full work of penology\, advocating reform of the criminal law system. The book was the first full-scale work to tackle criminal reform and to suggest that criminal justice should conform to rational principles. As a consequence in Italy the first pre-unitarian state to abolish the death penalty was the Grand Duchy of Tuscany as of November 30\, 1786\, under the reign of Pietro Leopoldo\, later Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II. So Tuscany was the first civil state in the world to do away with torture and capital punishment. \nOn this occasion the participating cities show their commitment for life and against the death penalty. The cities illuminate a symbolic monument\, such as the Atomium in Brussels\, the Colosseum in Rome and the Plaza de Santa Ana in Madrid. Participating cities in 2009 include more than 60 capitals worldwide\, and over 1\,200 cities and towns around the world\, such as Rome\, Brussels\, Madrid\, Ottawa\, Mexico City\, Berlin\, Barcelona\, Florence\, Venice\, Buenos Aires\, Austin\, Dallas\, Antwerp\, Vienna\, Naples\, Paris\, Copenhagen\, Stockholm\, Reggio Emilia\, Bogotá\, Santiago de Chile. By this symbolic action\, these cities demand a stay of all executions worldwide. This initiative is promoted by the Community of Sant’Egidio and supported by the main international human rights organizations\, gathered in the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty (Amnesty International\, Ensemble contre la Peine de Mort\, International Penal Reform\, FIACAT). DESCRIPTION:The Ogoni Nine were a group of nine activists from the Ogoni region of Nigeria who opposed the operating practices of the Royal Dutch Shell oil corporation. \nTheir members included outspoken author and playwright Ken Saro-Wiwa\, Saturday Dobee\, Nordu Eawo\, Daniel Gbooko\, Paul Levera\, Felix Nuate\, Baribor Bera\, Barinem Kiobel\, and John Kpuine (Tripathi\, p.189)\, who were executed by hanging in 1995 by the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha and buried in Port Harcourt Cemetery. The executions provoked international condemnation and led to the increasing treatment of Nigeria as a pariah state until General Abacha’s mysterious death in 1998. Saro-Wiwa had previously been a critic of the Royal Dutch Shell oil corporation\, and had been imprisoned for a year prior to the executions in November 1995. DESCRIPTION:De Werelddag tegen de doodstraf is een herdenkingsdag\, bedoeld om te pleiten voor de afschaffing van de doodstraf\, en om aandacht te vragen voor de omstandigheden waarin terdoodveroordeelde gevangenen zich bevinden. \nDe dag werd voor het eerst georganiseerd door de World Coalition Against the Death Penalty in 2003. Sedertdien heeft deze dag jaarlijks op 10 oktober plaatsgevonden. De dag wordt gesteund door vele NGO’s en regeringen in de wereld\, waaronder Amnesty International\, de Europese Unie en de Verenigde Naties. Op 26 september 2007 riep de Raad van Europa 10 oktober uit als Europese dag tegen de doodstraf. Elke Werelddag tegen de doodstraf richt zich op een bepaald thema. In 2018 was het thema de levensomstandigheden van terdoodveroordeelden\, eerdere thema’s waren onder andere armoede\, terrorisme\, drugsmisdrijven en geestelijke gezondheid. DESCRIPTION:In 2024 zijn er wereldwijd 1.518 mensen geëxecuteerd in vijftien verschillende landen plaats\, is te lezen in het jaarlijkse doodstrafrapport ‘Death Sentences and Executions 2024‘ van Amnesty International. \nDit is het hoogste aantal sinds 2015\, in dat jaar vonden er 1.634 executies plaats. Dit zijn de executies die Amnesty heeft kunnen verifiëren\, de werkelijke aantallen liggen hoger. De meeste executies in 2024 vonden plaats in het Midden-Oosten\, net als vorig jaar. Het aantal landen dat executies uitvoerde (vijftien) was het laagste ooit. In het rapport zijn executies uit China niet meegenomen. Daar zijn alle gegevens omtrent de doodstraf staatsgeheim. Aangenomen wordt dat er jaarlijks duizenden mensen worden geëxecuteerd\, wat China tot grootste executeur van de wereld maakt. Ook zijn er vanwege dezelfde reden geen cijfers bekend over Noord-Korea en Vietnam. Ook voor die landen wordt aangenomen dat de doodstraf veel wordt toegepast. Vanwege de crises in Palestina en Syrië\, kon Amnesty International daar geen aantallen bevestigen. De grote toename van executies kan worden toegeschreven aan Iran\, Irak en Saudi-Arabië. Deze drie landen waren verantwoordelijk voor een totaal van 1.380 executies. In Irak verdrievoudigde het aantal executies bijna – van ten minste zestien in 2023 tot ten minste 63 in 2024. In Saudi-Arabië verdubbelde het aantal – van 172 naar ten minste 345. In Iran werden 119 meer mensen geëxecuteerd dan het jaar ervoor – van ten minste 853 naar ten minste 972. Iran was daarmee verantwoordelijk voor 64% van alle executies. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van Amnesty International. De Iraanse gevangenissen veranderden in 2023 in massa-executieplekken. Ten minste 481 executies – meer dan de helft van het totale aantal – vonden plaats vanwege drugsgerelateerde misdrijven. Het onderzoek “Don’t Let Them Kill Us”: Iran’s Relentless Execution Crisis since the 2022 Uprising laat zien hoe de Iraanse autoriteiten de doodstraf steeds meer gebruiken om mensen angst aan te jagen en hun machtspositie te versterken na de ‘Woman Life Freedom’-demonstraties van september tot december 2022. In het rapport worden ook zorgen geuit over de buitenproportionele impact van het dodelijke anti-drugsbeleid op arme en gemarginaliseerde gemeenschappen\, zoals de Baluchi- en Koerdische minderheidsgroepen. DESCRIPTION:The Ogoni Nine were a group of nine activists from the Ogoni region of Nigeria who opposed the operating practices of the Royal Dutch Shell oil corporation. \nTheir members included outspoken author and playwright Ken Saro-Wiwa\, Saturday Dobee\, Nordu Eawo\, Daniel Gbooko\, Paul Levera\, Felix Nuate\, Baribor Bera\, Barinem Kiobel\, and John Kpuine (Tripathi\, p.189)\, who were executed by hanging in 1995 by the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha and buried in Port Harcourt Cemetery. The executions provoked international condemnation and led to the increasing treatment of Nigeria as a pariah state until General Abacha’s mysterious death in 1998. Saro-Wiwa had previously been a critic of the Royal Dutch Shell oil corporation\, and had been imprisoned for a year prior to the executions in November 1995. DESCRIPTION:Mohammad is zevenentwintig jaar oud\, en een rechter heeft beslist dat hij moet sterven voor zijn verzet tegen het vreselijke regime in Iran. \nWe hebben niet veel tijd meer: Mohammad wordt in de gevangenis gemarteld en kan ieder moment geëxecuteerd worden. Maar er is nog een sprankje hoop: druk van de internationale gemeenschap heeft al eerder executies in Iran voorkomen. Nu doen mensen overal ter wereld mee met de oproep om Mohammads leven te redden\, en prominente advocaten vragen de VN-mensenrechtencommissaris en belangrijke overheden om de executie te helpen tegenhouden en Iran verantwoordelijk te stellen. Sluit je nu aan om zijn verhaal bekend te maken en druk te zetten op belangrijke overheden en de VN\, zodat ze zich uitspreken tegen het gruwelijke executieprogramma van Iran. \nMohammads passie is boksen. Hij is een van de kampioenen in zijn club in Mashhad\, de tweede grootste stad in Iran. Toen hij 23 jaar was\, verruilde hij zijn passie voor zijn principes — hij werd een politiek gevangene toen hij werd gearresteerd voor zijn deelname aan de anti-regeringsprotesten in 2019. Nu begint zijn belangrijkste gevecht: niet in een boksring\, maar voor zijn eigen leven. Toen de dood van Mahsa Amini in een politiecel in 2022 tot historische protesten leidde\, ontketende het meedogenloze Iraanse regime een gewelddadige aanval op haar eigen bevolking om de opstand in de kiem te smoren. \nHet martelen en executeren van gevangenen werd al snel ingezet als repressieve maatregel — sommige betogers werden binnen twee maanden ter dood veroordeeld en enkele weken later al geëxecuteerd. Nu is Mohammad aan de beurt. We mogen de bevolking van Iran de rug niet toekeren: we weten dat publieke druk levens kan helpen redden.
