DESCRIPTION:On 31 May 2021\, the World Health Assembly (WHA) recognized 30 January as World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day through decision WHA74(18)\, an awareness day for addressing neglected tropical diseases. \nJanuary 30 is the anniversary of the landmark 2012 London Declaration on NTDs\, which unified partners across sectors\, countries and disease communities to push for greater investment and action on NTDs. 2020 was a special year for the global health response to NTDs\, with WHO announcing new goals during the year to guide progress against NTDs until 2030. 30 January 2024 is the fourth annual World NTD Day. The theme serves as a rallying call-for-action and builds on a call to action from President Embaló of Guinea-Bissau in July 2023 in a piece published in Health Policy Watch. World NTD Day wants to end neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). To achieve this\, we need sustainable financing for NTDs. Investing in NTDs is a global health and development success story. So far\, 50 countries have eliminated an NTD\, showing progress is possible. In 2020\, 600 million fewer people required interventions against NTDs than in 2010. Yet\, for some time\, a lack of resources has been seen as a significant barrier to the control\, elimination\, and eradication of NTDs. This challenge has only been intensified by COVID-19 which has caused severe delays and disruption to NTD programmes\, as well as a massive repurposing and diversion of resources. \nOn World Neglected Tropical Disease Day 2024\, WHO is calling on everybody\, including leaders and communities\, to unite and act to address the inequalities that drive neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and to make bold\, sustainable investments to free the estimated 1.62 billion people\, in the world’s most vulnerable communities\, from a vicious cycle of disease and poverty. The purpose of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day is to raise the profile of neglected tropical diseases\, the suffering they cause and to garner support towards their control\, elimination and eradication\, in line with the programmatic targets set out in the NTD road map 2021−2030 and the commitments of the 2022 Kigali declaration on neglected tropical diseases. On 31 May 2021\, the Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly recognized 30 January as World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day through the unanimous approval of decision WHA74(18)  by WHO Member States. Musk also stated that intial results were showing “promising neuron spike detection”. Neuralink received FDA approval for human clinical trials in May 2023. DESCRIPTION:Het syndroom van Alagille (Alagille syndrome)\, genoemd naar Daniel Alagille\, is een complexe aandoening van een aantal orgaansystemen\, voornamelijk de lever\, het hart\, de ogen\, het gelaat en het skelet. \nDe belangrijkste symptomen zijn die van cholestase (gepaard gaand met jeuk en geelzucht)\, herkenbaar aan weinig galwegen in een leverbiopt; aangeboren hartafwijkingen\, vooral van de longarterieën\, oogafwijkingen\, een typische gelaatsvorm\, en ‘vlinderwervels‘. Nierafwijkingen en afwijkingen aan het centraal zenuwstelsel komen ook voor. De mortaliteit is ongeveer 10% waarbij vaatproblemen in het centraal zenuwstelsel\, hartziekte en leverziekte de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken zijn. De verschijnselen zijn ook binnen 1 familie zeer variabel. De ziekte is autosomaal dominant erfelijk. Nieuwe mutaties (sporadische gevallen) komen frequent voor. Als bekend is wat de aard van de afwijking in een familie is\, is prenatale diagnostiek in principe mogelijk. Genetisch onderzoek louter om de diagnose te verifiëren bij iemand die aan de klinische criteria voldoet\, heeft geen consequenties en wordt nog niet aanbevolen. Nog niet volledig opgehelderd. Bij ca 70% van de patiënten zijn afwijkingen in een gen genaamd JAG1 aantoonbaar. Het gen ligt op chromosoom 20\, locatie 20p12. Het codeert voor een eiwit\, Jagged 1\, dat op de celmembraan van sommige cellen wordt gevonden en dat een functie heeft bij signaaluitwisseling tussen cellen zowel tijdens de embryonale ontwikkeling als daarna. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nHet aantal geneesmiddelentekorten in Nederland over 2023 is hoger dan ooit. \nKNMP Farmanco telt een aantal van 2292 in het jaar 2023\, tegenover 1514 in 2022. Uit een aanvullende impactanalyse van de apothekersorganisatie blijkt dat zo’n 5 van de 13 miljoen medicijngebruikers in Nederland zijn geconfronteerd met de gevolgen van tekorten. Vele patiëntengroepen zijn in 2023 geraakt door de geneesmiddelentekorten. Mensen die kampen met angst\, spanning en slapeloosheid hebben ervaren dat middelen als diazepam en temazepam niet beschikbaar waren. Gedwongen wisselingen geven veel onrust. Ook bij het voorkomen of behandelen van pijn op de borst bij hartklachten was er\, door het niet beschikbaar zijn van vaak voorgeschreven middelen\, een ongewenste situatie. Infecties waren lastig te bestrijden door een tekort aan diverse antibiotica. Door verhoogde vraag zijn bepaalde antibiotica ook in 2024 niet voorradig. De geneesmiddelentekorten raken ook zeer kwetsbare patiënten. In een traject met diverse stakeholders – overheden\, zorgverzekeraars\, patiëntenorganisaties\, voorschrijvers en apothekers – is een lijst van middelen overeengekomen waarbij patiënten niet van geneesmiddel gewisseld mogen worden. Hierop staan onder meer methotrexaat (kankerpatiënten)\, symmetrel (Parkinson) en carbamazepine (epilepsie). Geneesmiddelentekorten ontstaan vooral door problemen met productie\, distributie en kwaliteit. Ook zijn er economische redenen aan de orde. DESCRIPTION:In 2018 hebben ruim 70 partijen samen met het ministerie van VWS (Ministerie van Volksgezondheid\, Welzijn en Sport) afspraken gemaakt om bij te dragen aan een gezonder Nederland\, deze afspraken zijn vastgelegd in het Nationaal Preventieakkoord (NPA). \nVoor de drie thema’s van het akkoord zijn ambities vastgesteld in deelakkoorden. Het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) heeft de impact van de afspraken uit het NPA en de deelakkoorden (deelakkoord roken\, deelakkoord overgewicht\, deelakkoord problematisch alcoholgebruik) doorgerekend om in te schatten of de ambities voor 2040 worden bereikt. Deze afspraken hebben naar verwachting onvoldoende impact\, blijkt uit een modelberekening van het RIVM. De ambities voor 2040 worden bij alle drie deze thema’s niet gehaald. Het RIVM berekende voor het eerst uitgebreid of de ambities voor 2040\, met de voortgang tot nu toe\, worden gehaald. Er is berekend hoe de situatie in 2040 zal zijn met én zonder de afspraken. Duidelijk is volgens de berekening dat\, om de ambities te halen\, er extra en stevigere maatregelen nodig zijn. Ook kunnen ze minder goed om met stress en zijn vaker ontevreden over hun leven. Hierdoor is de introverte mens gevoeliger voor verslavende middelen of drugsmisbruik en pleegt ze vaker zelfmoord dan de extroverte. Laten alle extraverte mensen eens stil staan bij de dagelijkse worsteling die de introverte mens doormaakt. Zet eens een stap opzij en laat de introverte uit je schaduw stappen. Kijk eens naar hem of haar in plaats van er langs te kijken. DESCRIPTION:As exemplified by the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic major infectious diseases and epidemics have devastating impacts on human lives\, wreaking havoc on long-term social and economic development. \nGlobal health crises threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems\, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people\, including women and children\, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries. There is an urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems\, reaching those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations. In the event of the absence of international attention\, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and gravity. There is great need of raising awareness\, the exchange of information\, scientific knowledge and best practices\, quality education\, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at the local\, national\, regional and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics. It is important to strengthen epidemic prevention by applying lessons learned on epidemic management and how to prevent the stoppage of basic services\, and to raise the level of preparedness in order to have the earliest and most adequate response to any epidemic that may arise\, and recognizing also the value of an integrated One Health approach that fosters integration of human health\, animal health and plant health\, as well as environmental and other relevant sectors. International cooperation and multilateralism play an important role in the response to epidemics. \nWe need to stress the significance of partnership and solidarity among every individual\, community and State\, and regional and international organizations\, in all stages of epidemic management\, as well as the importance of considering a gender perspective in this regard. The United Nations system\, in particular the World Health Organization\, plays a pivotal role in coordinating responses to epidemics\, in accordance with its mandate\, and in supporting national\, regional and international efforts to prevent\, mitigate and address the impacts of infectious diseases and epidemics in accordance with the goal of advancing the 2030 Agenda. We need to recognize the primary role and responsibility of Governments and the indispensable contribution of relevant stakeholders in tackling global health challenges\, especially women\, who make up the majority of the world’s health workers. UN member states commit to ensure inclusive\, equal and non-discriminatory participation\, with special attention to those\, who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations with the highest chance of epidemic infection. The UN General Assembly invites all Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other global\, regional and subregional organizations\, the private sector and civil society\, including non-governmental organizations\, academic institutions\, individuals and other relevant stakeholders to observe the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness annually in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national contexts and priorities\, through education and awareness-raising activities\, in order to highlight the importance of the prevention of\, preparedness for and partnership against epidemics. \nLinks:\nDay of Epidemic Preparedness

DESCRIPTION:3FM Serious Request (vaak verkort tot Serious Request) is een geldinzamelingsactie die sinds 2004 jaarlijks georganiseerd wordt in de week voor Kerstmis door de Nederlandse radiozender NPO 3FM\, tijdens de actie zetten dj’s van de radiozender zich in voor een specifiek thema. \nTijdens het evenement worden enkele dj’s vijf of zes dagen opgesloten in een glazen huis en mogen de geen vast voedsel eten. In plaats daarvan kregen ze groente- en fruitsappen. De dj’s draaien dag en nacht verzoeknummers voor luisteraars\, in ruil voor een donatie. In de week voorafgaand aan Kerstmis nemen dj’s van het radiostation NPO 3FM gedurende zes dagen (vijf in 2004) plaats in een glazen huis\, om radio te maken voor het goede doel. Een BN’er sluit het huis op de vooravond van de eerste dag en start hiermee de actie. Dj’s maken tijdens de actie afwisselend radio\, waarbij de playlist was gebaseerd op door het publiek aangevraagde muziek. Voor zo’n aanvraag wordt een geldbedrag gedoneerd\, meestal zo’n 10 tot 25 euro met uitschieters tot enkele duizenden euro’s. Verzoeknummers kunnen gedurende de actieweek telefonisch of via de site van NPO 3FM worden aangevraagd. \nMuziekaanvragen vormen niet de enige bron van inkomsten. Tijdens de actie zijn er door het hele land acties van zowel NPO 3FM als particulieren. Bij de meeste edities is er ook een veiling van uiteenlopende producten en activiteiten. Tijdens de actie wordt er dagelijks een tussenstand bekendgemaakt. Gedurende de laatste avond worden de dj’s uit het Glazen Huis bevrijd waarna vervolgens het eindbedrag bekendgemaakt wordt. Dat vindt meestal plaats op een eindfeest. Vlak voor het eindbedrag bekend wordt gemaakt\, ontvangen de dj’s elk een appel. Deze appel is grotendeels van symbolische waarde aangezien deze appel het eerste vaste voedsel is dat zij innemen sinds het begin van de actie. 3FM Serious Request komt in 2023 in actie voor Stichting ALS Nederland op de Grote Markt in Nijmegen. DESCRIPTION:Opschuiven naar een voedingspatroon met meer plantaardige en minder dierlijke eiwitten is beter voor het milieu en gezonder voor de meeste Nederlanders\, concludeert de Gezondheidsraad in een advies aan de minister van LNV en de staatssecretaris van VWS. \nDierlijke eiwitbronnen hebben een grotere milieu-impact dan plantaardige eiwitbronnen. Ook worden sommige bronnen van dierlijk eiwit in verband gebracht met een verhoogd risico op chronische ziekten. Daarom richt overheidsbeleid zich op de overgang naar meer plantaardige en minder dierlijke eiwitten\, oftewel de eiwittransitie. De Gezondheidsraad onderzocht de gezondheidseffecten van een voedingspatroon met 60% plantaardige en 40% dierlijke eiwitten. In ons huidige voedingspatroon is die verhouding andersom. De raad concludeert dat het meer plantaardige voedingspatroon beter voldoet aan de Richtlijnen goede voeding dan het huidige voedingspatroon. Voor de meeste Nederlanders is het mogelijk om minder dierlijk te gaan eten zonder dat tekorten aan voedingsstoffen ontstaan. De raad schat dat het meer plantaardige voedingspatroon de milieu-impact van onze voedselconsumptie met 25% kan verlagen. DESCRIPTION:Het Pesticide Action Network International (PAN) riep de “No Pesticides Use Day” in 1988 in het leven om de industriële ramp in Bhopal\, India te herdenken\, sinds 2010 werd tijdens de bijeenkomst van de Pesticides Task Force besloten om de dag uit te breiden naar een hele week\, de campagne No Pesticides Use Week (NPUW) begint op 3 december en eindigt op 10 december. \nIn 1984 explodeerde op 3 december een bestrijdingsmiddelenfabriek van Union Carbide in Bhopal. Als gevolg van de enorme gaslek vielen er doden en gewonden en nog steeds worden er als gevolg van de ramp misvormde kinderen in het gebied geboren. Op Wereld Anti-Pesticiden Dag staan we stil bij de invloed van bestrijdingsmiddelen op mens en milieu. Wereldwijd worden pesticiden gebruikt\, bijvoorbeeld om groenten en fruit te beschermen tegen ongedierte. Hierdoor wordt dit voedsel vervuild met hormoonontregelende bestrijdingsmiddelen. Als je deze middelen wilt mijden\, kun je het beste deze voedingsmiddelen nemen. Pesticiden kunnen schadelijk zijn voor de gezondheid. DESCRIPTION:Anti-lhbti-wetgeving desastreus voor aidsbestrijding. \nWereldwijd voeren steeds meer landen anti-lhbtiq-wetten in. Criminalisering en bestraffing van lhbtiq-ers heeft ernstige gevolgen voor de aidsbestrijding. Deze wetten maken het in veel landen steeds moeilijker om levensreddende hiv-zorg te krijgen. We zien in landen met anti-lhbtiq-wetgeving dat het aantal homomannen met hiv 5 keer hoger is dan in landen zonder zulke wetten. In Oeganda bijvoorbeeld durven mensen zich niet te laten testen uit angst voor de doodstraf of om je gezin in gevaar te brengen. Ook in Kenia\, Burundi en Tanzania is anti-lhbtiq-wetgeving in de maak. Hongarije voerde een wet in die het mogelijk maakt anoniem aangifte te doen tegen homostellen met kinderen. Ben je in Florida geboren als meisje\, maar voel je je een jongen en accepteert één van de ouders je zoals je bent? Dan mag de andere ouder je ontvoeren. \nVeel lhbtiq-hulporganisaties lopen de kans hun deuren te moeten sluiten uit angst voor aanvallen. Ook partners van Aidsfonds krijgen steeds vaker te maken met geweld uit conservatieve hoek en politie-invallen. In sommige landen wordt hun werk zelfs verboden. Op Prinsjesdag 2023 is ruim 3 miljard bezuinigingen op ontwikkelingshulp aangekondigd. PVV en VVD hebben al aangekondigd nauwelijks meer geld te willen steken in ontwikkelingssamenwerking. Nederland is een belangrijke bondgenoot van lhbtiq-ers wereldwijd. Zonder steun kunnen de organisaties en activisten die hun rechten verdedigen niet overleven. DESCRIPTION:Wereldaidsdag is een jaarlijks terugkerend wereldwijd evenement op 1 december\, dat gewijd is aan de bewustwording omtrent aids. \nWereldaidsdag werd in augustus 1987 bedacht door James W. Bunn en Thomas Netter\, beide werkzaam als voorlichter bij de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie in Genève\, Zwitserland. Bunn en Netter legden hun idee voor aan Dr. Jonathan Mann\, directeur van het Global Programme on AIDS (nu bekend als UNAIDS van de Verenigde Naties). Het concept werd goedgekeurd en op 1 december 1988 vond de eerste Wereldaidsdag plaats. Het doel van Wereldaidsdag is om wereldwijd aandacht te vragen voor de aidsproblematiek en op te roepen tot solidariteit met mensen met hiv en aids. Wereldwijd vinden er vele initiatieven plaats zoals evenementen\, congressen en acties. In Nederland organiseert de non-profitorganisatie Aidsfonds (voorheen Aids Fonds en STOP AIDS NOW!) Wereldaidsdag met onder andere een congres en een campagne. In België vraagt Sensoa aandacht voor de aidsbestrijding. Op Wereldaidsdag wordt opgeroepen het rode lintje op te spelden\, het symbool voor solidariteit met mensen met hiv. Wereldaidsdag heeft elk jaar een thema. Dat verwijst naar het streefdoel van nul nieuwe besmettingen met hiv\, nul doden aan de gevolgen van aids en nul gevallen van discriminatie van mensen met hiv en aids. DESCRIPTION:Een derde van alle kankergevallen in Nederland wordt veroorzaakt door een ongezonde leefstijl en leefomgeving\, dat blijkt uit het onderzoek ‘Bijdragen van leefstijl\, leefomgeving\, infecties en reproductie aan kanker in Nederland‘ van TNO in opdracht van KWF Kankerbestrijding. \nMet maatregelen die het makkelijker maken voor mensen om onder andere niet te roken\, gezond te eten en zich goed te beschermen tegen de zon kunnen jaarlijks tot zo’n 40.000 kankergevallen worden voorkomen. Roken blijft met afstand koploper als veroorzaker van kanker in Nederland\, bevestigen de nieuwe cijfers. Jaarlijks kunnen naar schatting 19.095 diagnoses (16% van alle kanker) hieraan toegeschreven worden. Andere belangrijke oorzaken zijn zonblootstelling (5%\, 6.374 gevallen per jaar) en ongezonde voeding (5%\, 6.452). Daarbij gaat het vooral om weinig fruit\, groente en voedingsvezel en te veel bewerkt vlees. Ook kan de overheid wat KWF betreft nog veel doen om het aantal kankergevallen terug te dringen\, zoals het terugbrengen van het aantal verkooppunten van sigaretten. De instantie pleit onder meer voor een reclameverbod op ongezonde voeding en alcohol. Daarnaast zou een gezondere leefstijl gestimuleerd moeten worden. Met deze studie brengen TNO en KWF de meest actuele cijfers voor Nederland. Behalve leefstijlfactoren keken de onderzoekers ook naar omgevingsfactoren (zoals fijnstof)\, infecties (zoals HPV-virus) en reproductieve factoren (zoals het niet geven van borstvoeding). Voor al deze risicofactoren schatten de onderzoekers hoe groot de bijdrage is aan het totaal aantal kankergevallen. And yet\, today\, 4.2 billion people live without safely managed sanitation. How can anyone lift themselves out of poverty without sanitation? We must expand access to safe toilets and leave no one behind. When someone has a ‘safely managed sanitation service’\, it means they use hygienic toilet facilities that are not shared with other households and where excreta are either separated from human contact and safely disposed of in situ or transported and treated off-site\, thereby protecting people and the environment from disease agents. DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organization promotes the World Antibiotic Awareness Week\, the aim of the week is to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance. \nIt also wants to promote the correct usage of antibiotics across all fields in order to prevent further instances of antibiotic resistance. World Antibiotic Awareness Week has been held every November since 2015. For 2017\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) are together calling for responsible use of antibiotics in humans and animals to reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria\, viruses\, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance\, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat\, increasing the risk of disease spread\, severe illness and death. The World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. The theme for WAAW 2023 will remain “Preventing antimicrobial resistance together“\, as in 2022. AMR is a threat to humans\, animals\, plants and the environment. It affects us all. That is why this year’s theme calls for cross-sectoral collaboration to preserve the effectiveness of antimicrobials. DESCRIPTION:Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is an event in which survivors of suicide loss come together to find connection\, understanding\, and hope through their shared experience. \nIn 1999\, Senator Harry Reid\, who lost his father to suicide\, introduced a resolution to the United States Senate\, leading to the creation of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Also known as Survivor Day\, the day was designated by the United States Congress as a day on which those affected by suicide can join together for healing and support.
