SUMMARY:WHO Director-General declares mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern - publication
DESCRIPTION:WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has determined that the upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR). \nDr Tedros’s declaration came on the advice of an IHR Emergency Committee of independent experts who met earlier in the day to review data presented by experts from WHO and affected countries. The Committee informed the Director-General that it considers the upsurge of mpox to be a PHEIC\, with potential to spread further across countries in Africa and possibly outside the continent. The Director-General will share the report of the Committee’s meeting and\, based on the advice of the Committee\, issue temporary recommendations to countries. In declaring the PHEIC\, Dr Tedros said\, “The emergence of a new clade of mpox\, its rapid spread in eastern DRC\, and the reporting of cases in several neighbouring countries are very worrying. On top of outbreaks of other mpox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa\, it’s clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives.” WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti said\, “Significant efforts are already underway in close collaboration with communities and governments\, with our country teams working on the frontlines to help reinforce measures to curb mpox. With the growing spread of the virus\, we’re scaling up further through coordinated international action to support countries bring the outbreaks to an end.” \nCommittee Chair Professor Dimie Ogoina said\, “The current upsurge of mpox in parts of Africa\, along with the spread of a new sexually transmissible strain of the monkeypox virus\, is an emergency\, not only for Africa\, but for the entire globe. Mpox\, originating in Africa\, was neglected there\, and later caused a global outbreak in 2022. It is time to act decisively to prevent history from repeating itself.” This PHEIC determination is the second in two years relating to mpox. Caused by an Orthopoxvirus\, mpox was first detected in humans in 1970\, in the DRC. The disease is considered endemic to countries in central and west Africa. In July 2022\, the multi-country outbreak of mpox was declared a PHEIC as it spread rapidly via sexual contact across a range of countries where the virus had not been seen before. That PHEIC was declared over in May 2023 after there had been a sustained decline in global cases. Mpox has been reported in the DRC for more than a decade\, and the number of cases reported each year has increased steadily over that period. Last year\, reported cases increased significantly\, and already the number of cases reported so far this year has exceeded last year’s total\, with more than 15 600 cases and 537 deaths. \nThe emergence last year and rapid spread of a new virus strain in DRC\, clade 1b\, which appears to be spreading mainly through sexual networks\, and its detection in countries neighbouring the DRC is especially concerning\, and one of the main reasons for the declaration of the PHEIC. In the past month\, over 100 laboratory-confirmed cases of clade 1b have been reported in four countries neighbouring the DRC that have not reported mpox before: Burundi\, Kenya\, Rwanda and Uganda. Experts believe the true number of cases to be higher as a large proportion of clinically compatible cases have not been tested. Several outbreaks of different clades of mpox have occurred in different countries\, with different modes of transmission and different levels of risk. The two vaccines currently in use for mpox are recommended by WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization\, and are also approved by WHO-listed national regulatory authorities\, as well as by individual countries including Nigeria and the DRC. \nLast week\, the Director-General triggered the process for Emergency Use Listing for mpox vaccines\, which will accelerate vaccine access for lower-income countries which have not yet issued their own national regulatory approval. Emergency Use Listing also enables partners including Gavi and UNICEF to procure vaccines for distribution. WHO is working with countries and vaccine manufacturers on potential vaccine donations\, and coordinating with partners through the interim Medical Countermeasures Network to facilitate equitable access to vaccines\, therapeutics\, diagnostics and other tools. WHO anticipates an immediate funding requirement of an initial US$ 15 million to support surveillance\, preparedness and response activities. A needs assessment is being undertaken across the three levels of the Organization. To allow for an immediate scale up\, WHO has released US$ 1.45 million from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies and may need to release more in the coming days. DESCRIPTION:Knoops’ advocaten heeft namens elf belangenorganisaties een dagvaarding uitgebracht tegen de Staat der Nederlanden in verband met de schadelijke gevolgen van de wijdverbreide PFAS-verontreiniging in Nederland\, de rechtszaak dient in Den Haag op 7 augustus 2024. \nDe dagvaarding is opgesteld in opdracht van Vereniging Natuur- en Milieufederatie Noord-Holland\, Vereniging Zeeuwse Milieufederatie\, Stichting Natuur- en Milieufederatie Zuid-Holland\, Stichting Friese Milieufederatie\, Stichting Gezond Water\, Stichting SchipholWatch\, Vereniging Omwonenden Luchthaven Eelde\, Vereniging Vakvereniging Brandweer Vrijwilligers\, Vereniging Belangenvereniging Brandweer\, Vereniging Vakbond voor Burger en Militair defensiepersoneel en Stichting Ouderennetwerk West-Friesland. De belangenorganisaties hebben zich verenigd om de Staat aan te spreken op het grove nalaten van diens zorgplicht om Nederlandse burgers\, dieren en het milieu te beschermen tegen de schadelijke effecten van PFAS-verontreiniging. Hoewel de Staat zich al geruime tijd bewust is van de ernstige gevolgen van blootstelling aan PFAS voor de (volks)gezondheid en het milieu\, neemt de Staat onvoldoende maatregelen om de schade door PFAS te beperken en voorkomen. Hoofd- en halskanker is relatief zeldzaam. In Nederland krijgen jaarlijks ongeveer 3.000 mensen de diagnose dat ze kanker in het hoofd-halsgebied hebben. Staat gelijk aan ongeveer 5% van het totale aantal mensen die jaarlijks de diagnose kanker krijgen. \nIn België zie je een soort gelijke cijfers\, ook daar gaat het om 5% van alle nieuwe gevallen van kanker. Bij elke ziekte geeft het tijdig herkennen van de klachten grotere overlevingskansen\, dat is bij hoofd-halskanker niet anders. Hoe eerder je naar de huisarts gaat\, hoe sneller je een doorverwijzing krijgt naar een hoofd-hals oncologisch centrum. DESCRIPTION:Op Wereld Sjögren Dag wordt wereldwijd de geboortedag (23 juli 1899) van de Zweedse oogarts Henrik Sjögren herdacht\, Sjögren was de ontdekker van de systeemziekte Syndroom van Sjögren en werd naamgever. \nHet vaststellen van deze aandoening heeft veel patiënten geholpen die op zoek waren naar antwoorden op hun gezondheidsproblemen. Het is ook een bewustwordingsdag voor ons allen en geeft tevens alle patiënten die aan deze ziekte lijden of de symptomen hebben de aandacht die ze verdienen. Het Syndroom van Sjögren (Sjögren) is een systemische auto-immuunziekte waarbij vochtafscheidende klieren ontstoken raken en de slijmvliezen in de mond\, de ogen en op alle andere plaatsen in het lichaam uitdrogen. Het Syndroom van Sjögren komt overal ter wereld voor en maakt geen onderscheid qua huidskleur of qua leeftijd. Bij een systeemziekte kunnen ontstekingen in gewrichten en in verschillende organen ontstaan. Een systeemziekte is een auto-immuunziekte\, dit betekent dat afweercellen een ontstekingsreactie beginnen tegen het eigen lichaam. Op dit moment is er geen genezing voor Sjögren\, maar een vroege diagnose en een goede behandeling zijn belangrijk om de ernstiger complicaties van de ziekte te voorkomen en tegelijkertijd de kwaliteit van leven van een patiënt te helpen verbeteren. Gemiddeld duurt het 2\,8 jaar vanaf het moment dat een patiënt een behandeling voor zijn symptomen zoekt tot het ontvangen van een formele diagnose. The World Federation of Neurology was established on July 22 1957. It was suggested by the Public Awareness and Advocacy Committee that 22 July 2014 should be celebrated as “World Brain Day”. This proposal was announced at WCN\, Council of Delegates meeting on 22 September\, 2013 and the proposal was received with a warm welcome by delegates. SUMMARY:Digital biomarkers for non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease: the state of the art - publication
DESCRIPTION:Smartwatch brengt onzichtbare symptomen van Parkinson in beeld\, door slimme sensoren krijgen zorgverleners meer inzicht in het ziekteverloop. \nBij Parkinson denk je vooral aan traagheid en trillen\, maar ook andere klachten komen vaak voor\, echter is er voor deze symptomen nauwelijks aandacht in onderzoek naar Parkinson volgens onderzoekers van het Radboudumc. Denk aan slaapproblemen\, depressieve klachten\, een verminderd denkvermogen en plasproblemen. Onterecht\, want ze hebben veel invloed op de kwaliteit van leven. De onderzoekers zochten daarom uit hoe ze deze klachten kunnen meten in de thuissituatie. Het onderzoeksteam spitte de wereldwijde wetenschappelijke literatuur door op zoek naar geschikte meetmethodes. Daarbij beperkten ze zich niet tot onderzoek bij mensen met Parkinson\, maar keken ze ook naar andere aandoeningen. Vooral slimme sensoren die de slaapkwaliteit meten blijken veelbelovend. In vrijwel alle gevallen gaat het daarbij om metingen aan de pols\, door bijvoorbeeld smartwatches. Die geven verrassend betrouwbare resultaten\, vergeleken met een uitgebreid slaaponderzoek waarvoor je een  nacht moet worden opgenomen in een ziekenhuis of gespecialiseerde kliniek. Mensen met Parkinson deden als “patiëntonderzoekers” mee aan het literatuuronderzoek. Het woord zoönose is afgeleid van de Griekse woorden zoön (dier) en nosos (ziekte). Veel fulminant (levensbedreigend) verlopende infectieziekten zijn zoönosen\, daar deze bacteriën\, protozoa\, virussen of wormen vaak zijn aangepast om in hun specifieke gastheer te overleven zonder al te veel schade aan te richten\, maar deze bij andere gastheren een heftige immuunreactie oproepen. Het verschijnsel waarbij menselijke aandoeningen worden overgedragen op dieren\, wordt antroponose genoemd. Op Wereld Zoönosen Dag wordt extra aandacht gegeven aan de Franse scheikundige en bioloog Louis Pasteur. Op 6 juli 1885 diende Louis Pasteur met succes het eerste vaccin tegen het rabiësvirus (hondsdolheid) toe. Morfea gaat niet in systemische sclerose over. Symptomen die pleiten voor systemische sclerose zijn het fenomeen van Raynaud\, symmetrische huidafwijkingen en positieve ANA. DESCRIPTION:Elk jaar op 25 juni wordt tijdens Wereld Vitiligo Dag (World Vitiligo Day) aandacht gevraagd voor vitiligo\, wereldwijd staan er mensen stil bij de huidaandoening die voorkomt bij 1% van de mensen. \nDoor het delen van kennis en het ophalen van donaties\, wordt er gestreefd naar meer bewustwording en een verbetering in de kwaliteit van leven voor mensen met vitiligo. Vitiligo (soms ook leukoderma genoemd) is een huidziekte\, waarbij bepaalde pigmentafwijkingen optreden vanwege verstoringen in de productie van het huidpigment melanine. De patiënt ontwikkelt meer of minder uitgebreide\, scherp begrensde maar onregelmatig gevormde plekken waar het huidpigment verdwenen is\, vaak symmetrisch verdeeld op het lichaam of de ledematen. Vooral bij mensen met een donkere huid geeft dit een zeer opvallend en (door de patiënt zelf ervaren als) ontsierend effect en de ongepigmenteerde huid kan in de zon ook makkelijk verbranden. Langs de randen van de plekken vormen zich soms donkere plekken. Dit komt vooral veel voor in de schaamstreek\, bij mannen op het scrotum. De donkere plekken veranderen soms van structuur en plaats\, en blijven vaak niet stabiel maar blijven meestal wel beperkt tot een bepaald gedeelte van de huid en breiden zich vaak niet verder uit. Vitiligo kan overal op de huid van het menselijk lichaam voorkomen en wordt vaak als een probleem ervaren als het in bijvoorbeeld de gelaatsstreek ontstaat of als er op het lichaam meerdere plekken ontstaan. Vitiligo over een groot deel van het gehele lichaam komt minder voor. Mensen met deze pigmentafwijking mogen niet te lang blootgesteld worden aan zonlicht aangezien zij minder beschermd zijn tegen UV-straling. Vitiligo gaat soms gepaard met andere auto-immuunziekten\, zoals hypothyreoïdie\, lichen sclerosus\, myasthenia gravis en de ziekte van Addison. For every person diagnosed\, the impact of the disease will be forever felt by their loved ones. Alliance members across the world use the hashtag #ALSMNDWithoutBorders on 21 June to raise awareness and funds on Global Day. June 21 is a solstice – a turning point – and each year the ALS/MND community undertake a range of activities to express their hope that this day will be another turning point in the search for cause\, treatment and cure of ALS/MND.\n \nThe PALS and CALS Advisory Council and the Alliance support the “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Optional Protocol” as brought forward by the United Nations. The Convention supports the global promotion and protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all people with disabilities\, including those living with ALS/MND. Of note\, the Alliance emphasizes the importance of Articles 9 and 19 surrounding a person’s independence and their rights to equal accessibility and participation in daily living and enjoyment of life. \nBy providing equal access to all aspects of daily living and services\, people living with ALS/MND are able to live autonomously and independently. This means that people living with ALS/MND are able to make their own choices or decisions about their daily living\, living arrangements\, healthcare provision\, and community involvement. DESCRIPTION:Building on a rapidly growing global consensus\, in 2018 the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) started a worldwide dengue awareness campaign\, which included calling on the UN and WHO to designate a World Dengue Day. \nIts petition for a World Dengue Day has to date garnered over 26\,500 signatures\, endorsed by a growing and global collective of patients\, policy makers\, researchers\, professionals and advocates from over 110 countries\, who share the clear goal of reducing the burden of dengue around the world. In addition\, ISNTD also convened an international and multi-sectoral Dengue Advisory Group\, comprised of partners from Ministries of Health\, research and academia\, NGOs and civic society\, to guide this campaign. Such a move is not without precedent. On 15 June 2011\, ASEAN Health Ministers first declared that day — and each subsequent 15 June — ASEAN Dengue Day. This important annual event allows ASEAN members\, in coordination with WHO\, to consolidate dengue prevention and control measures. \nThe World Dengue Day campaign is aiming to achieve the same – on an international scale given the rapidly growing global threat of dengue. Growing population densities\, unplanned urban development\, poor water storage and unsatisfactory sanitary conditions are all common factors that contribute to the worsening burden of this mosquito-borne disease – not just for ASEAN\, but for many countries around the world. The disease has significant impact on the socio-economic status of every country. Tackling dengue is everyone’s concern. ISNTD-ADVA World Dengue Day Forum – Cross Sector Synergies marks a day that all governments\, civil societies\, public and private sectors\, schools\, universities and citizens\, can devote to dengue awareness-raising actions. It also has an essential\, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care. Access to safe and sufficient blood and blood products can help reduce rates of death and disability due to severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth. In many countries\, there is not an adequate supply of safe blood\, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available\, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors. The WHO’s goal is for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020. In 2014\, 60 countries have their national blood supplies based on 99-100% voluntary unpaid blood donations\, with 73 countries still largely dependent on family and paid donors. \nOn World Blood Donor Day 2024 WHO\, its partners and communities across the world will unite behind the theme: ‘20 years of celebrating giving: thank you blood donors!‘ The 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day is an excellent and timely opportunity to thank blood donors across the world for their life-saving donations over the years and honour the profound impact on both patients and donors. DESCRIPTION:Albinism is a rare\, non-contagious\, genetically inherited difference present at birth\, congenital absence of melanin in an animal or plant resulting in white hair\, feathers\, scales and skin and reddish pink or blue eyes. \nIn almost all types of albinism\, both parents must carry the gene for it to be passed on\, even if they do not have albinism themselves. The condition is found in both sexes regardless of ethnicity and in all countries of the world. Albinism results in a lack of pigmentation (melanin) in the hair\, skin and eyes\, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light. As a result\, almost all people with albinism are visually impaired and are prone to developing skin cancer. There is no cure for the absence of melanin that is central to albinism. While numbers vary\, it is estimated that in North America and Europe 1 in every 17\,000 to 20\,000 people have some form of albinism. The condition is much more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa\, with estimates of 1 in 1\,400 people being affected in Tanzania  and prevalence as high as 1 in 1\,000 reported for select populations in Zimbabwe and for other specific ethnic groups in Southern Africa. \nThe lack of melanin means persons with albinism are highly vulnerable to developing skin cancer. In some countries\, a majority of persons with albinism die from skin cancer between 30 and 40 years of age. Skin cancer is highly preventable when persons with albinism enjoy their right to health. This includes access to regular health checks\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing. In a significant number of countries\, these life-saving means are unavailable or inaccessible to them. Consequently\, in the realm of development measures\, persons with albinism have been and are among those “left furthest behind.” Therefore\, they ought to be targeted for human rights interventions in the manner envisioned by the Sustainable Development Goals. \nDue to a lack of melanin in the skin and eyes\, persons with albinism often have permanent visual impairment. They also face discrimination due to their skin colour; as such\, they are often subject to multiple and intersecting discrimination on the grounds of both disability and colour. People with albinism face multiple forms of discrimination worldwide. Albinism is still profoundly misunderstood\, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition\, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion. This leads to various forms of stigma and discrimination. \nIn some communities\, erroneous beliefs and myths\, heavily influenced by superstition\, put the security and lives of persons with albinism at constant risk. These beliefs and myths are centuries old and are present in cultural attitudes and practices around the world. While it has been reported that persons with albinism globally face discrimination and stigma\, information on cases of physical attacks against persons with albinism is mainly available from countries in Africa. \nPersons with albinism face more severe forms of discrimination and violence in those regions\, where the majority of the general population are relatively dark-skinned. In other words\, a greater degree of contrast in pigmentation often gives rise to a greater degree of discrimination. That appears to be the case in some sub-Saharan African countries where albinism is shrouded in myth and dangerous and erroneous beliefs. The figures on violations against persons with albinism are telling. There have been hundreds of cases of attacks and killings of persons with albinism reported in 28 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the past decade. The attacks have several root causes including ignorance\, longstanding stigma\, poverty and most abhorrently\, harmful practices emanating from manifestation of beliefs in witchcraft. The alarming reality is that these horrendous practices continue today. \nThe manner in which discrimination faced by persons with albinism manifests itself\, and its severity\, vary from region to region. In the western world\, including North America\, Europe and Australia\, discrimination often consists of name-calling\, persistent teasing and bullying of children with albinism. Little information is available from other regions such as Asia\, South America and the Pacific etc. However\, some reports indicate that in China and other Asian countries\, children with albinism face abandonment and rejection by their families. \n2024 marks a decade since the launch of International Albinism Awareness Day. To mark this occasion\, this year’s theme is: “10 years of IAAD: A decade of collective progress.” This theme invites us to: \n\nCelebrate the strides made within the movement\, with renewed commitment for the future;\nHighlight the tireless efforts of albinism groups from around the world;\nReflect on the continued legal\, policy and practical changes still required to ensure the full and equal enjoyment of rights by persons with albinism.\n\nLinks:\nAlbinism Awareness Day \nAttacks against people with albinism are hate crimes \nNot ghosts but human beings
