DESCRIPTION:Op 26 september 2024 hebben 117 organisaties een oproep gedaan aan de Europese Unie voor eerlijkere handelswetgeving. \nNog altijd staat Europa het namelijk toe dat er spullen worden geexporteerd naar andere delen van de wereld\, zelfs als die goederen illegaal zijn voor de Europese markt vanwege veiligheidsredenen. Denk aan gevaarlijk speelgoed dat we niet aan onze kinderen willen geven\, maar die wel in Europa worden geproduceerd voor de verkoop op andere continenten. Hetzelfde geldt voor milieuvervuilende wegwerpplastics zoals single-use bestek. Europa exporteert naast illegale pesticiden dus nog meer onveilige producten die in de EU zelf verboden zijn. The survey is a follow-up to ADI’s landmark 2019 Attitudes to dementia survey\, and explores how perceptions of dementia have – or haven’t – changed in the span of five years. The report highlights how different communities and individuals experience and address dementia stigma\, from advocacy in low- and middle-income countries to innovative outreach programmes for youth and marginalised groups. DESCRIPTION:Patient safety is a discipline that emphasizes safety in health care through the prevention\, reduction\, reporting\, and analysis of medical error that often leads to adverse effects. \nThe frequency and magnitude of avoidable adverse events experienced by patients was not well known until the 1990s\, when multiple countries reported staggering numbers of patients harmed and killed by medical errors. Recognizing that healthcare errors impact 1 in every 10 patients around the world\, the World Health Organization calls patient safety an endemic concern. Indeed\, patient safety has emerged as a distinct healthcare discipline supported by an immature yet developing scientific framework. There is a significant transdisciplinary body of theoretical and research literature that informs the science of patient safety. \nNo one should be harmed in health care. Yet thousands of patients across the world suffer avoidable harm\, or are put at risk of injury\, while receiving health care every single day. The 72nd World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA 72.6 ‘Global action on patient safety’ on 25 May 2019. The resolution recognizes patient safety as a global health priority and endorses the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be observed annually on 17 September. \nWorld Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety. Furthermore\, the Day brings together patients\, families\, caregivers\, communities\, health workers\, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety. De organisatie zet zich in voor drie doelen: minder kanker\, meer genezing en een betere levenskwaliteit voor wie kanker heeft (gehad). Kom op tegen Kanker pleit tegelijk voor een beter kankerbeleid en structurele oplossingen om de ziekte te vermijden\, te bestrijden en te verzachten. Om dat te kunnen doen\, mobiliseren ze zoveel mogelijk mensen om zich te engageren als zorgvrijwilliger\, als actievoerder of als donateur. De organisatie is bekend van de gelijknamige actie Kom op tegen Kanker\, waarin het onder andere door het verkopen van plantjes geld inzamelt. DESCRIPTION:In het kader van lotgenotencontact organiseert patiëntenorganisatie NCFS elk najaar een CF-dag voor naasten van mensen met CF. \nCystische fibrose (CF) of Taaislijmziekte – andere benamingen zijn mucoviscidose en fibrosis cystica (FC) – is een recessief overerfbare ziekte\, waarbij slijm dat op diverse plaatsen in het lichaam wordt afgescheiden heel taai is. De belangrijkste plaatsen waar het taaie slijm wordt gevormd zijn de longen\, het maag-darmkanaal\, de lever\, de alvleesklier en de voortplantingsorganen. De symptomen kunnen zich al tijdens de zuigelingenleeftijd manifesteren\, veelal door problemen met de vertering van voeding en (chronische) luchtweginfecties. Vooral door de luchtweginfecties hebben patiënten een duidelijk geringere levensverwachting dan normaal. De verminderde productie van alvleesklierenzymen kan daarbij een vertraagde groei\, een vettige diarree en een tekort aan vet-oplosbare vitaminen veroorzaken. Bij mannen kan onvruchtbaarheid optreden. Bij pasgeborenen is er vaak sprake van een stofwisselingsstoornis\, aangeduid als meconiumileus. DESCRIPTION:De campagne ‘Water op de kaart’ van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en de stichting Natuur & Milieu moet een beeld gaan geven van de kwaliteit van water rond een riooloverstort. \nZo’n 40 burgerwetenschappers verspreid over Nederland gaan in hun eigen buurt monsters nemen van de zogenaamde kleine oppervlaktewateren: de sloten of vijvers om de hoek. Dat water blijkt namelijk van niet zo’n goeie kwaliteit. Bij hevige plensbuien\, die in toenemende mate voorkomen\, komt het riool vol met water te zitten en stroomt het over naar omliggende sloten en plassen. Daar zit het probleem. Door die overstort komen stoffen uit het riool als medicijnresten en poep en plas in het oppervlaktewater terecht. DESCRIPTION:Overdose Awareness Day (iOAD) is a global event held on 31 August each year. Its purpose is to raise awareness of overdoses\, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends. \nIt was initiated in 2001 in Australia by SJ Finn who was managing a needle and syringe program at The Salvation Army Crisis Centre in St Kilda\, Victoria. It has been run by the Penington Institute since 2012. The first day saw 6\,000 silver ribbons distributed across the country and into New Zealand. Since then the day has grown and is recognized in over 40 countries. So too\, sadly\, has the death toll from overdose continued to rise. Vigils were held in Vancouver in 2018\, where 38 people died of overdose in July 2018. Firefighters in the city attended 6\,234 overdose calls in 2017. The Ontario Pharmacists Association issued warnings about the dangers of prescription opioids. In Philadelphia\, where 1\,217 people died of opioid overdose in 2017 (the highest death rate of any major U.S. city)\, there were calls for an overdose prevention site in 2018. The Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Council of Orange County\, New York organised a candlelight vigil and remembrance ceremony at the Goshen Village Square. DESCRIPTION:Vrijdag 16 augustus 2024\, markeert een pijnlijke mijlpaal: de eerste Zoutmaxdag van het jaar. \nOp deze dag hebben mannen in Nederland van 18 tot en met 50 jaar hun maximale zoutinname voor een heel jaar al bereikt. Dit betekent dat ze in slechts acht maanden tijd de aanbevolen maximale hoeveelheid zout hebben geconsumeerd\, terwijl er nog ruim vier maanden te gaan zijn in het jaar. De meest recente Voedsel Consumptie Peiling (VCP) van het RIVM toont aan dat Nederlandse mannen in de genoemde leeftijdsgroep gemiddeld 8\,0 gram zout per dag consumeren. Dit is maar liefst 60% meer dan de door de WHO aanbevolen limiet van 5\,0 gram per dag. Zelfs volgens de Gezondheidsraad\, die een maximum van 6\,0 gram per dag hanteert\, overschrijden ze de aanbevolen hoeveelheid zout met aanzienlijke marges. Hoewel zout uiteraard een essentieel element is in ons dieet\, is overmatige inname schadelijk voor de gezondheid. Een te hoge zoutinname verhoogt het risico op hypertensie\, wat kan leiden tot hart- en vaatziekten. Daarnaast kan te veel zout bijdragen aan maagkanker\, nierschade en botontkalking. \nEen groot deel van onze zoutinname komt uit voedingsmiddelen\, die vaak sterk bewerkt zijn. Maar liefst 87% van het dagelijks geconsumeerde zout is toegevoegd aan voedselproducten\, 13% komt uit het zoutvaatje thuis. Kijk je op de lange termijn\, dan zijn we relatief gezien zelfs nog meer zout uit voedingsmiddelen gaan consumeren\, en strooien we thuis minder met het zoutvaatje. Uit de voedselconsumptiepeiling over 2007-2010 kwam 79% van onze dagelijkse zoutconsumptie uit voedingsmiddelen en werd 21% thuis in de keuken en aan tafel toegevoegd. We krijgen in plaats van minder zout dus relatief meer zout binnen via producten uit de voedingsmiddelenindustrie!  Door de vrijblijvendheid en magere ambities van de inspanningen vanuit het bedrijfsleven en de politiek om de zoutconsumptie te verlagen\, is de absolute afname minimaal. De gemiddelde dagelijkse zoutinname is slechts met 0\,7 gram gedaald\, van 7\,3 gram naar 6\,6 gram per dag. Procentueel is dit 4\,4% en daarmee een stapje in de goede richting\, maar nog verre van de door de WHO aanbevolen 30% vermindering tegen 2025. \nMet Zoutmaxdag vraagt Foodwatch jaarlijks aandacht voor de overmatige zoutconsumptie in Nederland en roepen we op tot dringende actie. Het huidige vrijwillige beleid en de afspraken tussen de overheid en het bedrijfsleven\, zoals het Akkoord Verbetering Productsamenstelling en de Nationale Aanpak Productverbetering (NAPV)\, zijn onvoldoende effectief. Uit een tussenevaluatie van de NAPV door Wageningen University and Research blijkt dat deze aanpak geen leidende rol speelt in de herformulering van voedingsmiddelen. Foodwatch dringt aan op snelle en doeltreffende maatregelen om de gezondheid van de Nederlandse bevolking te beschermen en eisen wettelijk bindende maximumwaarden voor zout in voedingsmiddelen. Dit moet niet een plan voor de toekomst zijn\, maar een onmiddellijke maatregel. Zoutmaxdag benadrukt de urgentie om onze zoutconsumptie te verminderen. DESCRIPTION:WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has determined that the upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR). \nDr Tedros’s declaration came on the advice of an IHR Emergency Committee of independent experts who met earlier in the day to review data presented by experts from WHO and affected countries. The Committee informed the Director-General that it considers the upsurge of mpox to be a PHEIC\, with potential to spread further across countries in Africa and possibly outside the continent. The Director-General will share the report of the Committee’s meeting and\, based on the advice of the Committee\, issue temporary recommendations to countries. In declaring the PHEIC\, Dr Tedros said\, “The emergence of a new clade of mpox\, its rapid spread in eastern DRC\, and the reporting of cases in several neighbouring countries are very worrying. On top of outbreaks of other mpox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa\, it’s clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives.” WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti said\, “Significant efforts are already underway in close collaboration with communities and governments\, with our country teams working on the frontlines to help reinforce measures to curb mpox. With the growing spread of the virus\, we’re scaling up further through coordinated international action to support countries bring the outbreaks to an end.” \nCommittee Chair Professor Dimie Ogoina said\, “The current upsurge of mpox in parts of Africa\, along with the spread of a new sexually transmissible strain of the monkeypox virus\, is an emergency\, not only for Africa\, but for the entire globe. Mpox\, originating in Africa\, was neglected there\, and later caused a global outbreak in 2022. It is time to act decisively to prevent history from repeating itself.” This PHEIC determination is the second in two years relating to mpox. Caused by an Orthopoxvirus\, mpox was first detected in humans in 1970\, in the DRC. The disease is considered endemic to countries in central and west Africa. In July 2022\, the multi-country outbreak of mpox was declared a PHEIC as it spread rapidly via sexual contact across a range of countries where the virus had not been seen before. That PHEIC was declared over in May 2023 after there had been a sustained decline in global cases. Mpox has been reported in the DRC for more than a decade\, and the number of cases reported each year has increased steadily over that period. Last year\, reported cases increased significantly\, and already the number of cases reported so far this year has exceeded last year’s total\, with more than 15 600 cases and 537 deaths. \nThe emergence last year and rapid spread of a new virus strain in DRC\, clade 1b\, which appears to be spreading mainly through sexual networks\, and its detection in countries neighbouring the DRC is especially concerning\, and one of the main reasons for the declaration of the PHEIC. In the past month\, over 100 laboratory-confirmed cases of clade 1b have been reported in four countries neighbouring the DRC that have not reported mpox before: Burundi\, Kenya\, Rwanda and Uganda. Experts believe the true number of cases to be higher as a large proportion of clinically compatible cases have not been tested. Several outbreaks of different clades of mpox have occurred in different countries\, with different modes of transmission and different levels of risk. The two vaccines currently in use for mpox are recommended by WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization\, and are also approved by WHO-listed national regulatory authorities\, as well as by individual countries including Nigeria and the DRC. \nLast week\, the Director-General triggered the process for Emergency Use Listing for mpox vaccines\, which will accelerate vaccine access for lower-income countries which have not yet issued their own national regulatory approval. Emergency Use Listing also enables partners including Gavi and UNICEF to procure vaccines for distribution. WHO is working with countries and vaccine manufacturers on potential vaccine donations\, and coordinating with partners through the interim Medical Countermeasures Network to facilitate equitable access to vaccines\, therapeutics\, diagnostics and other tools. WHO anticipates an immediate funding requirement of an initial US$ 15 million to support surveillance\, preparedness and response activities. A needs assessment is being undertaken across the three levels of the Organization. To allow for an immediate scale up\, WHO has released US$ 1.45 million from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies and may need to release more in the coming days. DESCRIPTION:Knoops’ advocaten heeft namens elf belangenorganisaties een dagvaarding uitgebracht tegen de Staat der Nederlanden in verband met de schadelijke gevolgen van de wijdverbreide PFAS-verontreiniging in Nederland\, de rechtszaak dient in Den Haag op 7 augustus 2024. \nDe dagvaarding is opgesteld in opdracht van Vereniging Natuur- en Milieufederatie Noord-Holland\, Vereniging Zeeuwse Milieufederatie\, Stichting Natuur- en Milieufederatie Zuid-Holland\, Stichting Friese Milieufederatie\, Stichting Gezond Water\, Stichting SchipholWatch\, Vereniging Omwonenden Luchthaven Eelde\, Vereniging Vakvereniging Brandweer Vrijwilligers\, Vereniging Belangenvereniging Brandweer\, Vereniging Vakbond voor Burger en Militair defensiepersoneel en Stichting Ouderennetwerk West-Friesland. De belangenorganisaties hebben zich verenigd om de Staat aan te spreken op het grove nalaten van diens zorgplicht om Nederlandse burgers\, dieren en het milieu te beschermen tegen de schadelijke effecten van PFAS-verontreiniging. Hoewel de Staat zich al geruime tijd bewust is van de ernstige gevolgen van blootstelling aan PFAS voor de (volks)gezondheid en het milieu\, neemt de Staat onvoldoende maatregelen om de schade door PFAS te beperken en voorkomen. DESCRIPTION:Op Wereld Longkankerdag wordt over de hele wereld stilgestaan bij alle mensen die longkanker hebben (gehad) én hun familie en naasten. \nLongkanker heb je namelijk niet alleen. Op Longkankerdag wordt extra aandacht gevraagd voor weefselonderzoek bij longkanker. Hiermee kan de specifieke vorm van longkanker worden bepaald. Mensen willen natuurlijk graag meteen na de diagnose longkanker starten met een behandeling. Toch is het heel erg belangrijk om de uitslag van het weefselonderzoek af te wachten voordat er begonnen wordt met de behandeling. Wachten op de uitslag zorgt ervoor dat de patiënt\, samen met de arts\, de juiste behandeling kan kiezen voor de specifieke vorm van longkanker.
