Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van Superlijst Gezondheid\, een initiatief van denktank Questionmark in samenwerking met de gezondheidsfondsen Diabetes Fonds\, Hartstichting\, Maag Lever Darm Stichting en Nierstichting. Gezamenlijk doen zij een uiterst dringende oproep voor wettelijke maatregelen die zorgen dat supermarkten de noodzakelijke stappen zetten. Het onderzoek wordt elke twee jaar uitgevoerd. Al jarenlang is meer dan 80 procent van de aanbiedingen ongezond. In 2024 gaat het om 83 procent. De directeur van Questionmark wijst op de “toenemende problematiek van het groeiend aantal mensen met overgewicht en ziektes die hierdoor veroorzaakt of verergerd worden”. Ze pleit voor gezamenlijke initiatieven van supermarkten of wetgeving. Uit onderzoek van het RIVM kwam gisteren naar voren dat het aantal mensen met overgewicht in Nederland in 2050 naar verwachting zal zijn opgelopen tot 64 procent. DESCRIPTION:During the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW)\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) are together calling for responsible use of antibiotics in humans and animals to reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance. \nThe aim of the week is to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance. It also wants to promote the correct usage of antibiotics across all fields in order to prevent further instances of antibiotic resistance. World Antibiotic Awareness Week has been held every November since 2015.  Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria\, viruses\, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance\, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat\, increasing the risk of disease spread\, severe illness and death. The World AMR Awareness Week is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. \nThe theme for the World AMR Awareness Week 2024 is “Educate. Advocate. Act now.” This theme was chosen based on feedback from an online survey among stakeholders from the human\, animal\, plant\, and environmental health sectors\, which collected nearly 200 responses globally. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global health and socioeconomic crisis. It has significant impacts on human and animal health\, food production and the environment. Drug-resistant-pathogens pose a threat to everyone\, everywhere. Yet\, much more can be done to raise public and stakeholder awareness. Therefore\, this year’s theme calls on the global community to educate stakeholders on AMR\, advocate for bold commitments and take concrete actions in response to AMR. The 2024 UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR and the fourth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR\, for instance\, provide a critical window of opportunity for political and financial commitments as well as increased accountability in response to AMR. Stronger political leadership\, advocacy and accountability are needed at all levels and the time to act is now. DESCRIPTION:Operating Room Nurse Day is is celebrated annually on November 14 and was created to celebrate nurses who provide care to patients before\, during and after surgery\, as well as support and assist surgeons. \nOperating room nurses\, also known as OR nurses\, perioperative nurses\, surgical nurses\, or theatre nurses\, are nurses that specialize in providing care to surgical patients. They are an essential part of the perioperative surgical team and work alongside surgeons\, anesthesiologists\, certified registered nurse anesthetists\, and surgical technicians. Any surgery has three main phases\, known collectively as the perioperative period: the preoperative phase\, the intraoperative phase\, and the postoperative phase. Surgical nurses support patients at each of these stages\, so even though they are often referred to as operating room nurses\, their activities aren’t restricted to the operating room. In some countries\, perioperative nurses can focus on performing specific roles\, such as circulating nurses\, instrument nurses (also known as scrub nurses)\, registered nurse first assistants (RNFA)\, and perianaesthesia nurses (or recovery nurses). OR nurses need to be tidy and organized\, have attention to detail\, be able to anticipate surgeons’ needs and show initiative when appropriate\, and\, of course\, have a good bedside manner and interpersonal skills. And\, naturally\, they need to be properly educated; people who want to become OR nurses usually specialize in surgical nursing while attending nursing school and are often required to pass certification exams before being allowed to work in the operating room. \nIt is usually surgeons and anesthesiologists who get all or most of the credit for successful surgeries\, whereas the contribution of operating room nurses is often overlooked. However\, their work throughout all stages of the perioperative period is immensely important and requires skill and expertise. Yes\, it is surgeons who save patients’ lives\, but it is OR nurses who are at their side every step of the way\, supporting and taking care. Operating Room Nurse Day was created to highlight the importance of OR nurses and celebrate everything they do for their patients and fellow healthcare professionals. It was first proclaimed in 1989 by Terry Branstad\, the then Governor of Iowa. Although this professional observance has no official nationwide recognition\, OR Nurse Day has been celebrated by the professional community ever since its inception. Celebrate Operating Room Nurse Day by thanking surgical nurses you know for their hard work. Send them a gift or a card\, give them a shout-out on social media\, or even visit them in person to deliver your congratulations. Na het aannemen van een resolutie over diabetes door de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties op 20 december 2006 (door alle 192 VN-lidstaten) werd Wereld Diabetesdag een internationale VN-dag en worden de lidstaten via de Resolutie aangemoedigd om beleidsplannen te ontwikkelen voor preventie\, behandeling en zorg op het gebied van diabetes. \nJaarlijks wordt een wereldwijd thema uitgekozen\, dat door organisaties en/of bedrijven op landelijk of lokaal niveau verder kan worden uitgewerkt. This makes pneumonia the number 1 killer of children under 5\, claiming more lives in this age group than AIDS\, malaria\, and measles combined.Despite the overwhelming death toll of pneumonia\, it rarely receives coverage in the news media. World Pneumonia Day aims to help bring this health crisis to the public’s attention and encourages policy makers and grassroots organizers alike to combat the disease. Affordable treatment and prevention options exist against pneumonia. There are effective vaccines against the two most common bacterial causes of deadly pneumonia\, Haemophilus influenzae type B and Streptococcus pneumoniae\, and most common viral cause of pneumonia\, Orthomyxoviridae. A course of antibiotics which costs less than $1(US) is capable of curing the disease if it is started early enough. SUMMARY:Briefing on “Threats Posed by Ransomware Attacks against Hospitals and Other Healthcare Facilities and Services” (TV UN webcast)
DESCRIPTION:On 8 November 2024\, the United Nations Security Council will convene for a briefing on “threats posed by ransomware attacks against hospitals and other healthcare facilities and services”. \nThe meeting\, which will be held under the “Threats to international peace and security” agenda item\, was requested by the US\, with support from France\, Japan\, Malta\, the Republic of Korea (ROK)\, and the UK. Briefings are expected from World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and a representative of Ascension\, a faith-based private healthcare organisation in the US. \nRansomware is a type of malicious software\, or malware\, that infects digital systems and blocks users from accessing data and applications by encrypting key information. To regain access\, victims are extorted for a fee\, or ransom\, typically demanded in cryptocurrency\, making it more challenging for law enforcement to trace the payments. \nRansomware attacks have surged in recent years\, fuelled in part by the rise of Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS)\, which enables hackers to offer ready-made ransomware kits at low costs\, reducing entry barriers for individuals less experienced in cybercrime. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into these operations has further amplified the threat. As a result\, ransomware attacks have become more frequent and destructive\, with estimated payments reaching $1.1 billion in 2023. \nIn recent years\, the Security Council has been more active in addressing cyber threats to international peace and security. Besides discussions within its subsidiary bodies\, Council members have addressed cybersecurity threats in both formal and informal settings\, such as Arria-formula meetings. These discussions have encompassed a broad range of topics\, from cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure to efforts aimed at countering hate speech on social media. Most recently\, on 20 June\, the ROK convened a high-level open debate on cybersecurity as a signature event of its June Council presidency. (For more information: 19 June What’s in Blue story.) \nAlthough the Council has increased its engagement on cybersecurity\, discussions on this matter have primarily taken place in two General Assembly-mandated processes: the Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on advancing responsible state behaviour in cyberspace in the context of international security and the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) on security of and in the use of information and communications technologies (ICTs). Since 2004\, there have been six GGEs and two OEWGs. The GGEs have established a set of 11 norms of responsible state behaviour in cyberspace\, including a commitment by states to refrain from conducting or knowingly supporting ICT activities contrary to their obligations under international law such as those that intentionally damage critical infrastructure. \nThe OEWG’s latest annual progress report\, published on 22 July\, emphasised growing concerns among member states about the rise of ransomware attacks\, noting that the increase has been partly enabled by the availability of RaaS. States expressed alarm over the increasing frequency\, scale\, and severity of ransomware attacks\, noting that they may have an impact on international peace and security. According to the report\, states have underscored the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing ransomware threats\, including by “pursuing ransomware actors\, targeting the malicious software they use and its dissemination\, and countering the illicit finance that supports their activities”. States have also raised concern about the increase in cryptocurrency theft and financing of malicious ICT activity using cryptocurrency\, which could potentially impact international security. In its written submission to the OEWG on 11 July\, Russia said that it was “unacceptable” to include “issues of peace and security in the context of the topic of combating ransomware” in the report. \nAccording to a non-paper prepared by the US\, tomorrow’s meeting aims to serve as an opportunity to “deepen the Security Council’s understanding of the way critical infrastructure and services to the public\, when connected online\, can be exploited to cause harm\, extort victims\, destabilize societies\, and pose threats across borders”. \nAt the briefing\, Tedros is expected to emphasise that healthcare facilities have become a major target for ransomware attacks. He may reference the WHO’s 26 January report examining the threat of cyberattacks on healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic\, which notes that a sharp increase in phishing attempts and ransomware attacks was reported in that period\, as healthcare organisations adopted digital tools to optimise clinical workflows and provide remote consultations for patients. The report also highlights that although ransomware attacks have primarily targeted healthcare delivery organisations\, the COVID-19 pandemic saw an expanded focus on the broader biomedical supply chain\, including laboratories and pharmaceutical companies. \nThe Ascension representative is expected to provide a firsthand account of the 8 May ransomware attack which disrupted the organisation’s electronic medical records system\, phone systems\, and various platforms used to order tests\, procedures\, and medications. This led to the temporary suspension of some procedures\, tests\, and appointments. \nTomorrow\, most Council members are expected to argue that ransomware attacks\, especially those targeting critical infrastructure such as healthcare\, could constitute threats to international peace and security. In this regard\, some members may recall that\, in May 2022\, Costa Rica had to declare a state of emergency following a cyberattack on dozens of government institutions\, including the country’s finance ministry. \nSeveral Council members are expected to highlight the work of the International Counter Ransomware Initiative (CRI)\, established in 2021 to foster cooperation in countering ransomware threats and holding perpetrators of malicious attacks accountable. CRI members—including Council members France\, Japan\, the ROK\, Slovenia\, Switzerland\, the UK\, and the US—convened for the CRI’s fourth gathering in early October\, during which members discussed such issues as methods to counter ransomware attacks in the healthcare industry\, cooperation with cyber insurers and the private industry to reduce ransomware payments and increase incident reporting\, enhancing the security of critical infrastructure\, and best practices to counter the flow of finances to ransomware actors. \nSome Council members may reference the use of tactics such as cryptocurrency theft to support terrorist activities and to fund weapons of mass destruction programmes. Several members are expected to mention the activities of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in cyberspace\, a priority issue for the ROK\, Japan\, and several other members. They might refer to previous reports by the Panel of Experts (PoE) assisting the 1718 DPRK Sanctions Committee\, which have documented DPRK actors’ involvement in cyberattacks targeting financial institutions and critical infrastructure. (The PoE assisting the 1718 DPRK Sanctions Committee was terminated following a 28 March veto cast by Russia.) \nCouncil members generally agree on the importance of implementing the existing norms of responsible state behaviour in cyberspace and undertaking confidence- and capacity-building measures to reduce mistrust among member states and promote stability in cyberspace. However\, members have diverging views on the applicability of international law in cyberspace and the need for developing additional legally binding obligations. (For more information on Council dynamics on this issue\, see the brief on cybersecurity in our June 2024 Monthly Forecast.) \nAdditionally\, member states recognise the difficulty of attributing responsibility for malicious cyber actions\, with Russia frequently arguing that malicious cyber activity should not be attributed to a state based solely on the activity’s origin. In this regard\, some states have proposed establishing a global accountability mechanism for cyberspace\, in line with the recommendations of the Secretary-General’s July 2023 policy brief A New Agenda for Peace. \nWhile most member states acknowledge the Security Council’s role in addressing cybersecurity issues\, opinions vary on the extent of its desired involvement. At previous Security Council open debates and Arria-formula meetings on cybersecurity\, some member states have expressed support for the Council’s role as a platform for raising awareness and discussing emerging threats posed by new technologies\, as well as sharing lessons to formulate appropriate responses. Others have advocated for more active engagement\, potentially involving investigations under Article 34 of the UN Charter into specific cyberattacks and dispute resolution under Chapter VI. (Article 34 provides that the Security Council may investigate any situation which might lead to international friction or give rise to a dispute\, while Chapter VI concerns the pacific settlement of disputes.) DESCRIPTION:Het doel van Wereld Alvleesklierkanker maand is mensen te onderwijzen over alvleesklierkanker. \nDe symptomen van alvleesklierkanker (buik- of rugpijn\, gewichtsverlies\, geelzucht\, verlies van eetlust\, misselijkheid\, veranderingen in de ontlasting en diabetes) worden vaak in eerste instantie toegeschreven aan andere minder ernstige voorkomende aandoeningen. Echter een vroege diagnose geeft de hoogste overlevingskans en daarom is het bijzonder belangrijk om alert te zijn. Vaak wordt alvleesklierkanker pas ontdekt wanneer er al uitzaaiingen zijn. Als je de diagnose alvleesklierkanker krijgt is dat min of meer een doodvonnis. De overlevingskans is klein bij deze vorm van kanker. Naast het ondergaan van een jaarlijkse controle stimuleert de stichting mensen zich bewust te zijn van mogelijke familiegeschiedenis van kanker en om een gezondere levensstijl aan te nemen. De Movember Foundation financiert ruim 800 onderzoeksprojecten over de hele wereld. Het Wereldwijd Wetenschappelijk Comité (GSC) komt jaarlijks bijeen om ontwikkelingen in het kankeronderzoek te bespreken en te bepalen waar het beschikbare geld heen gaat. DESCRIPTION:BLOOM en Foodwatch Frankrijk tonen aan dat 100% van de 150 door hun onderzochte tonijnproducten kwik bevat. 10% van deze onderzochte voedingsmiddelen met tonijn bevat zelfs meer kwik dan de wettelijk toegestane hoeveelheid. \nIn het Franstalige rapport ‘Du Poison dans le Poisson’ heeft de Franse ngo BLOOM 148 blikjes tonijn uit een groot deel van Europa (Duitsland\, Engeland\, Spanje\, Frankrijk en Italië) getest. Er zijn in dit onderzoek geen blikjes uit de Nederlandse markt getest. De resultaten zijn echter schrikbarend. 100% van de blikjes zijn verontreinigd met kwik\, 10% overschreed bovendien de huidige norm die wordt getolereerd voor verse tonijn (1mg/kg) en 57% overschreed het niveau van 0\,3 mg/kg\, dat meer bescherming biedt voor de gezondheid en die geldig is toegepast voor andere vissoorten. Vanwege de gevaren die regelmatige inname van kwik met zich meebrengt\, zelfs in kleine doses\, eist Foodwatch Frankrijk samen met BLOOM dat alle blikjes die de norm van 0\,3 mg/kg overschrijden uit de verkoop worden genomen. Tonijn is een van de meest met kwik verontreinigde vissen\, de meest geconsumeerde in Europa en bovendien de vis met de minst beschermende normen voor consumenten.  Complete waanzin zeker als je kijkt naar de gezondheidsrisico’s van kwik en daarvan afgeleide stoffen. Kwik is een van de 10 meest zorgwekkende stoffen ter wereld volgens de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO)\, naast asbest en arsenicum. Een derivaat van kwik dat vaak in voedsel wordt aangetroffen is methylkwik. Deze stof is door het Internationaal Agentschap voor Kankeronderzoek (IARC) geclassificeerd als mogelijk kankerverwekkend.  Dit metaal is ook een krachtige neurotoxische stof: het is vooral gevaarlijk voor zwangere vrouwen en kinderen\, maar kan ook de hersenfunctie van volwassen personen aantasten. DESCRIPTION:Tijdens de meetweek fietsongevallen van 30 september tot en met 6 oktober 2024 belandden 1.291 mensen op de spoedeisende hulp (SEH) door een fietsongeval. \n96 slachtoffers zaten op een fatbike als bestuurder of passagier. Overige e-bikes en andere fietsen waren verantwoordelijk voor respectievelijk 480 en 715 SEH-bezoeken. Daarnaast vond twee derde van de fatbike-ongevallen plaats in een Randstedelijke provincie. Dit blijkt uit de resultaten van de meetweek fietsongevallen\, waarvoor alle 82 Nederlandse SEH’s het aantal fietsongevallen registreerden. Bij de aanname dat deze week een gemiddelde week was\, is de grove schatting dat er jaarlijks 5000 fatbikers op de SEH worden behandeld. Fatbikers die na een ongeval met letsel op de SEH terecht kwamen werden relatief vaker opgenomen in het ziekenhuis voor verdere behandeling. Waar dit voor e-bikers en andere fietsers ging om 16 procent en 13 procent\, was dit voor fatbikers 22 procent\, wat een indicatie geeft voor gemiddeld ernstiger letsel. Naast de 96 fatbikers die de SEH bezochten\, waren 31 personen aangereden door een fatbike. DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organization (WHO) published the report ‘Global Tuberculosis Report 2024‘ on tuberculosis (TB) revealing that approximately 8.2 million people were newly diagnosed with TB in 2023 – the highest number recorded since WHO began global TB monitoring in 1995. \nThis represents a notable increase from 7.5 million reported in 2022\, placing TB again as the leading infectious disease killer in 2023\, surpassing COVID-19. WHO’s Global Tuberculosis Report 2024 highlights mixed progress in the global fight against TB\, with persistent challenges such as significant underfunding. While the number of TB-related deaths decreased from 1.32 million in 2022 to 1.25 million in 2023\, the total number of people falling ill with TB rose slightly to an estimated 10.8 million in 2023. With the disease disproportionately affecting people in 30 high-burden countries\, India (26%)\, Indonesia (10%)\, China (6.8%)\, the Philippines (6.8%) and Pakistan (6.3%) together accounted for 56% of the global TB burden. According to the report\, 55% of people who developed TB were men\, 33% were women and 12% were children and young adolescents. In 2023\, the gap between the estimated number of new TB cases and those reported narrowed to about 2.7 million\, down from COVID-19 pandemic levels of around 4 million in 2020 and 2021. This follows substantial national and global efforts to recover from COVID-related disruptions to TB services. Het tekort wordt veroorzaakt door de tijdelijke sluiting van een grote productielocatie van producent Baxter in de Verenigde Staten. De fabriek in North Carolina raakte begin oktober ernstig beschadigd als gevolg van orkaan Helene. Hierdoor kan er aan Nederlandse ziekenhuizen een kwart minder vloeistoffen geleverd worden. DESCRIPTION:Wereld Psoriasis Dag is een jaarlijkse Dag die ieder jaar op 29 oktober wordt gehouden\, de International Federation of Psoriasis Association (IFPA) gebruikt deze datum om wereldwijd aandacht te vragen voor deze ziekte\, die op arthritis lijkt. \nDe Dag geeft “een internationaal gezicht aan de 125 miljoen mensen wereldwijd die lijden aan psoriasis of psoriasistische arthritis”. Psoriasis\, zilverschub of schub(ben)ziekte (psoriasis vulgaris) is een veelvoorkomende niet besmettelijke\, erfelijke\, chronische auto-immuunziekte\, gekenmerkt door een versnelde deling (proliferatie) en verminderde rijping (differentiatie) van hoorncellen in de opperhuid. Omdat de cellen niet normaal uitrijpen is ook het afschilferen verstoord\, waardoor lokaal sterke nieuwe aanmaak van huidcellen met schubbige schilfervorming op de aangedane plaatsen plaatsvindt. \nHoewel psoriasis vooral tot uiting komt in de huid\, is het niet primair een huidprobleem\, maar een ontregeling van het immuunsysteem (auto-immuunziekte). Periodes van vermindering van de symptomen worden vaak afgewisseld met periodes waarin de ziekte verergert. De aangedane huid van een psoriasispatiënt vernieuwt zich in 6 à 7 dagen; bij niet-patiënten is dit 26 à 27 dagen. De structuur van de zich vernieuwende huidlagen wijkt echter belangrijk af van normaal. Psoriasis is niet besmettelijk. Ongeveer 2% van de wereldbevolking heeft de aandoening\, alleen bij de Zuid-Amerikaanse inheemse bevolking is ze veel zeldzamer. De hoogste incidentie wordt gevonden in Scandinavië en Noord-Europa (3%). \nVaak bestaat er bij personen met psoriasis een genetische aanleg voor het optreden van een versnelde huiddeling. Het onderzoek hiernaar richt zich vooral op loci op de chromosomen 17q\, 4q\, 1q\, 6p21.3 en het Psors 1 gen. De ernst van de aandoening varieert sterk. Sommigen hebben slechts enkele psoriasisplekken\, anderen zitten van top tot teen onder. Soms is er ook jeuk. Mannen worden wat vaker door deze aandoening getroffen dan vrouwen\, en 75% van de patiënten vertoont de eerste verschijnselen vóór het 40e levensjaar. DESCRIPTION:Jaarlijks evenement op 29 oktober om aandacht te vragen voor cerebrovasculair accident (CVA)\, in de volksmond beter bekend als beroerte en attaque\, een acute medische aandoening waarbij er een plotselinge verstoring van de doorbloeding van de hersenen plaatsvindt. \nEr zijn twee hoofdtypen CVA: ischemisch CVA\, waarbij een bloedvat wordt afgesloten en de doorbloeding wordt gestaakt\, en hemorragisch CVA\, waarbij een bloeding plaatsvindt. Het uiteindelijke resultaat van beide typen is dat de hersenen niet goed meer functioneren. Een CVA kan worden gekenmerkt door verschillende symptomen\, waaronder gevoelsverlies en/of verlamming in één lichaamshelft\, moeite met het begrijpen of produceren van taal\, een draaierig gevoel\, of halfzijdig zichtverlies. De symptomen treden vaak kort na de beroerte op. Als deze minder dan één à twee uur duren\, spreekt men van een “transient ischemic attack” (TIA) of mini-beroerte. De belangrijkste risicofactor voor CVA is hoge bloeddruk. Andere factoren die de kans op een CVA vergroten\, zijn roken\, obesitas\, een te hoog cholesterolgehalte\, diabetes mellitus\, een geschiedenis met TIA’s en boezemfibrilleren. DESCRIPTION:Wereld Spina Bifida (Open Rug) en Hydrocefalus Dag is een jaarlijks op 25 oktober terugkerend evenement om bewustzijn te kweken rond Spina Bifida en Hydrocefalus en aandacht te vragen voor de rechten van mensen die met deze aandoeningen zijn geboren. \nSpina Bifida:\nEen open rug\, ook bekend met de medische term spina bifida\, is een ingewikkelde aandoening aan de neurale buis die ontstaat tijdens de embryonale ontwikkeling. Dit wordt een neuralebuisdefect genoemd. Anencefalie is een minder bekend voorbeeld van een neuralebuisdefect. Bij spina bifida sluiten de ruggenwervels niet goed rondom het ruggenmerg. Het komt voor bij 4\,5 op de 10.000 geboorten. Als eenmaal een kind is geboren met spina bifida\, of als een van de ouders spina bifida heeft\, dan is er een kans van 4% dat het eerstvolgende kind eveneens spina bifida heeft. Als ouders reeds twee kinderen met spina bifida hebben\, is de kans op een derde kind met deze aandoening 10%. In Zuidoost-Azië komt de afwijking minder vaak voor (2\,5 op de 10.000 geboorten). De benaming spina bifida is gegeven door de Nederlander Nicolaes Tulp in 1637 \nHydrocefalus:\nHydrocefalus\, ook wel waterhoofd\, is een aandoening waarbij in de ventrikels te veel hersenvocht aanwezig is en de ventrikels vergroot zijn. De overmaat aan hersenvocht oefent druk uit op de hersenen\, waardoor hersenfuncties kunnen worden aangetast. Volwassenen kunnen hierdoor last krijgen van hoofdpijn\, migraine\, dubbelzicht\, verminderd evenwicht\, incontinentie\, problemen met lopen\, persoonlijkheidsveranderingen of mentale retardatie. Bij baby’s kan de omvang van de schedel sterk toenemen. Overige symptomen die gepaard gaan met hydrocefalus zijn braken\, slaperigheid\, insulten en zinking van de ogen. Hydrocefalus kan aangeboren zijn\, maar het is ook mogelijk een hydrocefalus op te lopen. Onder de aangeboren afwijkingen die hydrocefalus kunnen veroorzaken\, vallen onder andere neuralebuisdefecten en vernauwing van het aquaduct van Sylvius. Ongeveer 1 à 2 op de 1.000 nieuwgeboren baby’s krijgt een waterhoofd. Hydrocefalus kan ook ontstaan als gevolg van hersenvliesontsteking\, hersentumoren\, traumatisch hersenletsel\, intraventriculaire bloedingen en subarachnoïdale bloedingen. Er bestaan drie soorten hydrocefalus: communicerend\, niet-communicerend en normaledrukhydrocefalie. DESCRIPTION:Sinds 1998 wordt jaarlijks op 22 oktober de Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) georganiseerd met elk jaar een ander thema.\n\nStotteren wordt in de ICD-10 omschreven als “Spraak die wordt gekenmerkt door frequente herhaling of verlenging van geluiden\, lettergrepen of woorden of ook wel door herhaalde aarzelingen of pauzes die het vloeiend verloop van de spraak onderbreken. Dit dient alleen dan als een stoornis te worden geklasseerd indien de ernst ervan zodanig is dat het vloeiend verloop van de spraak duidelijk wordt belemmerd”. In dit lemma wordt uitsluitend de meest voorkomende vorm van stotteren besproken\, de communicatiestoornis (subcategorie) die in de DSM-IV (voorganger van DSM V) is ingedeeld bij de ontwikkelingsstoornissen. Bij mensen die stotteren is het spraakmotorisch systeem minder stabiel dan bij mensen die niet stotteren. Wanneer er een storing in het spraakapparaat optreedt treed het stotteren op en dat kan zorgen voor een enorm schaamte- en minderwaardigheidsgevoel. Storingen in het spraakapparaat treden tijdens zingen veel minder vaak op dan tijdens (spontaan) spreken.
