DESCRIPTION:On 31 May 2021\, the World Health Assembly (WHA) recognized 30 January as World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day through decision WHA74(18)\, an awareness day for addressing neglected tropical diseases. \nJanuary 30 is the anniversary of the landmark 2012 London Declaration on NTDs\, which unified partners across sectors\, countries and disease communities to push for greater investment and action on NTDs. 2020 was a special year for the global health response to NTDs\, with WHO announcing new goals during the year to guide progress against NTDs until 2030. 30 January 2024 is the fourth annual World NTD Day. The theme serves as a rallying call-for-action and builds on a call to action from President Embaló of Guinea-Bissau in July 2023 in a piece published in Health Policy Watch. World NTD Day wants to end neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). To achieve this\, we need sustainable financing for NTDs. Investing in NTDs is a global health and development success story. So far\, 50 countries have eliminated an NTD\, showing progress is possible. In 2020\, 600 million fewer people required interventions against NTDs than in 2010. Yet\, for some time\, a lack of resources has been seen as a significant barrier to the control\, elimination\, and eradication of NTDs. This challenge has only been intensified by COVID-19 which has caused severe delays and disruption to NTD programmes\, as well as a massive repurposing and diversion of resources. \nOn World Neglected Tropical Disease Day 2024\, WHO is calling on everybody\, including leaders and communities\, to unite and act to address the inequalities that drive neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and to make bold\, sustainable investments to free the estimated 1.62 billion people\, in the world’s most vulnerable communities\, from a vicious cycle of disease and poverty. The purpose of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day is to raise the profile of neglected tropical diseases\, the suffering they cause and to garner support towards their control\, elimination and eradication\, in line with the programmatic targets set out in the NTD road map 2021−2030 and the commitments of the 2022 Kigali declaration on neglected tropical diseases. On 31 May 2021\, the Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly recognized 30 January as World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day through the unanimous approval of decision WHA74(18)  by WHO Member States. Naast het tv-programma is er de Focus-podcast die wordt gepresenteerd door Lara Billie Rense. Het platform heeft een YouTube-kanaal en is actief op Facebook\, X\, LinkedIn\, Instagram en TikTok. \nVan een half jaar snotteren tot soms zelfs levensbedreigende situaties\, in Nederland hebben steeds meer mensen last van een allergie. Naar schatting heeft ongeveer 5% van de Nederlanders last van een voedselallergie en 20% van een luchtwegallergie\, zoals hooikoorts. DESCRIPTION:Het syndroom van Alagille (Alagille syndrome)\, genoemd naar Daniel Alagille\, is een complexe aandoening van een aantal orgaansystemen\, voornamelijk de lever\, het hart\, de ogen\, het gelaat en het skelet. \nDe belangrijkste symptomen zijn die van cholestase (gepaard gaand met jeuk en geelzucht)\, herkenbaar aan weinig galwegen in een leverbiopt; aangeboren hartafwijkingen\, vooral van de longarterieën\, oogafwijkingen\, een typische gelaatsvorm\, en ‘vlinderwervels‘. Nierafwijkingen en afwijkingen aan het centraal zenuwstelsel komen ook voor. De mortaliteit is ongeveer 10% waarbij vaatproblemen in het centraal zenuwstelsel\, hartziekte en leverziekte de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken zijn. De verschijnselen zijn ook binnen 1 familie zeer variabel. De ziekte is autosomaal dominant erfelijk. Nieuwe mutaties (sporadische gevallen) komen frequent voor. Als bekend is wat de aard van de afwijking in een familie is\, is prenatale diagnostiek in principe mogelijk. Genetisch onderzoek louter om de diagnose te verifiëren bij iemand die aan de klinische criteria voldoet\, heeft geen consequenties en wordt nog niet aanbevolen. Nog niet volledig opgehelderd. Bij ca 70% van de patiënten zijn afwijkingen in een gen genaamd JAG1 aantoonbaar. Het gen ligt op chromosoom 20\, locatie 20p12. Het codeert voor een eiwit\, Jagged 1\, dat op de celmembraan van sommige cellen wordt gevonden en dat een functie heeft bij signaaluitwisseling tussen cellen zowel tijdens de embryonale ontwikkeling als daarna. Juist op deze dag gaan we in héél Nederland (hard-)lopen\, tegen depressie en vóór mentale gezondheid. Hiermee wordt aandacht gevraagd voor mensen die worstelen met somberheid en depressie en worden donaties opgehaald voor MIND\, zodat deze zich in kan blijven zetten voor mentale gezondheid in Nederland. Wist je dat zelfdoding doodsoorzaak nummer 1 onder jongeren in Nederland is? Schokkend! Los van deze zelfdodingen\, zijn er ontzettend veel mensen die – vaak onnodig – psychisch lijden. Bijna de helft van alle mensen in Nederland heeft op een zeker moment in z’n leven last van psychische klachten\, zelf of in de directe omgeving. En dit heeft altijd een enorme impact op alle betrokkenen en ook op de samenleving als geheel. We moeten en kunnen daar echt iets aan doen\, want door goede voorlichting en betere hulp kan veel leed (bij mensen met psychische klachten en hun naasten) worden voorkomen. Het absolute aantal tekorten daalde in 2024 ten opzichte van een jaar eerder\, van 2292 naar 1565. Maar tegelijkertijd is er nog steeds elke dag in elke apotheek gemiddeld 1 fte bezig met de tekorten. Dat zijn omgerekend 2.000 leden van de apotheekteams\, goed voor 220 miljoen euro op jaarbasis. Daar komen andere noodzakelijke kosten bovenop. Zo wordt bij omzettingen ook een beroep gedaan op collegazorgverleners als artsen of verpleegkundigen\, in de wijk of het ziekenhuis. Dat brengt extra onnodige kosten met zich mee. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nWorld Braille Day is an annual international day on 4 January and celebrates awareness of the importance of braille as a means of communication in the full realization of the human rights for blind and visually impaired people. \nThe date for the event was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly via a proclamation in November 2018\, and marks the birthday of Louis Braille\, creator of this writing system. The first World Braille Day was celebrated on January 4\, 2019. Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number\, and even musical\, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France\, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font. Braille is essential in the context of education\, freedom of expression and opinion\, as well as social inclusion\, as reflected in article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. \nLinks:\nWorld Braille Day

Zet eens een stap opzij en laat de introverte uit je schaduw stappen. Kijk eens naar hem of haar in plaats van er langs te kijken. DESCRIPTION:As exemplified by the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic major infectious diseases and epidemics have devastating impacts on human lives\, wreaking havoc on long-term social and economic development. \nGlobal health crises threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems\, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people\, including women and children\, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries. There is an urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems\, reaching those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations. In the event of the absence of international attention\, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and gravity. There is great need of raising awareness\, the exchange of information\, scientific knowledge and best practices\, quality education\, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at the local\, national\, regional and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics. It is important to strengthen epidemic prevention by applying lessons learned on epidemic management and how to prevent the stoppage of basic services\, and to raise the level of preparedness in order to have the earliest and most adequate response to any epidemic that may arise\, and recognizing also the value of an integrated One Health approach that fosters integration of human health\, animal health and plant health\, as well as environmental and other relevant sectors. International cooperation and multilateralism play an important role in the response to epidemics. \nWe need to stress the significance of partnership and solidarity among every individual\, community and State\, and regional and international organizations\, in all stages of epidemic management\, as well as the importance of considering a gender perspective in this regard. The United Nations system\, in particular the World Health Organization\, plays a pivotal role in coordinating responses to epidemics\, in accordance with its mandate\, and in supporting national\, regional and international efforts to prevent\, mitigate and address the impacts of infectious diseases and epidemics in accordance with the goal of advancing the 2030 Agenda. We need to recognize the primary role and responsibility of Governments and the indispensable contribution of relevant stakeholders in tackling global health challenges\, especially women\, who make up the majority of the world’s health workers. UN member states commit to ensure inclusive\, equal and non-discriminatory participation\, with special attention to those\, who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations with the highest chance of epidemic infection. The UN General Assembly invites all Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other global\, regional and subregional organizations\, the private sector and civil society\, including non-governmental organizations\, academic institutions\, individuals and other relevant stakeholders to observe the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness annually in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national contexts and priorities\, through education and awareness-raising activities\, in order to highlight the importance of the prevention of\, preparedness for and partnership against epidemics. \nLinks:\nDay of Epidemic Preparedness

DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, a highly pathogenic influenza H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b virus was detected in North America that is capable of infecting a diversity of avian species\, marine mammals\, and humans and in 2024\, clade 2.3.4.4b virus spread widely in dairy cattle in the US\, causing a few mild human cases\, but retaining specificity for avian receptors. \nHistorically\, this virus has caused up to 30% fatality in humans\, so Lin et al. performed a genetic and structural analysis of the mutations necessary to fully switch host receptor recognition. A single glutamine to leucine mutation at residue 226 of the virus hemagglutinin was sufficient to enact the change from avian to human specificity. In nature\, the occurrence of this single mutation could be an indicator of human pandemic risk. DESCRIPTION:Elk jaar wordt op 4 december de Dag van de Preventie van Chemische Rampen georganiseerd om het belang van chemische veiligheid te benadrukken. \nDe Dag van de Preventie van Chemische Rampen is een rechtstreeks gevolg van de industriële ramp in Bhopal die op 3 december 1984 plaats vond. Uit de fabrieken van Union Carbide India Limited ontsnapte op die dag per ongeluk ongeveer 40 ton methylisocyanaat (MIC). Dit goedje veroorzaakt ernstige irritatie aan de luchtwegen (longoedeem)\, huid- en ogen. Maar veroorzaakte in Bhopal ook een toename van het aantal doodgeborenen\, spontane abortussen en verhoogde kindersterfte. DESCRIPTION:Het Pesticide Action Network International (PAN) riep de “No Pesticides Use Day” in 1988 in het leven om de industriële ramp in Bhopal\, India te herdenken\, sinds 2010 werd tijdens de bijeenkomst van de Pesticides Task Force besloten om de dag uit te breiden naar een hele week\, de campagne No Pesticides Use Week (NPUW) begint op 3 december en eindigt op 10 december. In 1984 explodeerde op 3 december een bestrijdingsmiddelenfabriek van Union Carbide in Bhopal. Als gevolg van de enorme gaslek vielen er doden en gewonden en nog steeds worden er als gevolg van de ramp misvormde kinderen in het gebied geboren. Op Wereld Anti-Pesticiden Dag staan we stil bij de invloed van bestrijdingsmiddelen op mens en milieu. Wereldwijd worden pesticiden gebruikt\, bijvoorbeeld om groenten en fruit te beschermen tegen ongedierte. Hierdoor wordt dit voedsel vervuild met hormoonontregelende bestrijdingsmiddelen. Als je deze middelen wilt mijden\, kun je het beste deze voedingsmiddelen nemen. Pesticiden kunnen schadelijk zijn voor de gezondheid. DESCRIPTION:Wereldaidsdag is een jaarlijks terugkerend wereldwijd evenement op 1 december\, dat gewijd is aan de bewustwording omtrent aids. \nWereldaidsdag werd in augustus 1987 bedacht door James W. Bunn en Thomas Netter\, beide werkzaam als voorlichter bij de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie in Genève\, Zwitserland. Bunn en Netter legden hun idee voor aan Dr. Jonathan Mann\, directeur van het Global Programme on AIDS (nu bekend als UNAIDS van de Verenigde Naties). Het concept werd goedgekeurd en op 1 december 1988 vond de eerste Wereldaidsdag plaats. Het doel van Wereldaidsdag is om wereldwijd aandacht te vragen voor de aidsproblematiek en op te roepen tot solidariteit met mensen met hiv en aids. Wereldwijd vinden er vele initiatieven plaats zoals evenementen\, congressen en acties. In Nederland organiseert de non-profitorganisatie Aidsfonds (voorheen Aids Fonds en STOP AIDS NOW!) Wereldaidsdag met onder andere een congres en een campagne. In België vraagt Sensoa aandacht voor de aidsbestrijding. Op Wereldaidsdag wordt opgeroepen het rode lintje op te spelden\, het symbool voor solidariteit met mensen met hiv. Wereldaidsdag heeft elk jaar een thema. Dat verwijst naar het streefdoel van nul nieuwe besmettingen met hiv\, nul doden aan de gevolgen van aids en nul gevallen van discriminatie van mensen met hiv en aids. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van Superlijst Gezondheid\, een initiatief van denktank Questionmark in samenwerking met de gezondheidsfondsen Diabetes Fonds\, Hartstichting\, Maag Lever Darm Stichting en Nierstichting. Gezamenlijk doen zij een uiterst dringende oproep voor wettelijke maatregelen die zorgen dat supermarkten de noodzakelijke stappen zetten. Het onderzoek wordt elke twee jaar uitgevoerd. Al jarenlang is meer dan 80 procent van de aanbiedingen ongezond. In 2024 gaat het om 83 procent. De directeur van Questionmark wijst op de “toenemende problematiek van het groeiend aantal mensen met overgewicht en ziektes die hierdoor veroorzaakt of verergerd worden”. Ze pleit voor gezamenlijke initiatieven van supermarkten of wetgeving. Uit onderzoek van het RIVM kwam gisteren naar voren dat het aantal mensen met overgewicht in Nederland in 2050 naar verwachting zal zijn opgelopen tot 64 procent. It’s all about inspiring action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and help achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6)\, which promises sanitation for all by 2030. World Toilet Day 2019 is drawing attention to those people being left behind without sanitation. 2019 Theme: Leaving No One Behind: A toilet is not just a toilet. It’s a life-saver\, dignity-protector and opportunity-maker. Whoever you are\, wherever you are\, sanitation is your human right. And yet\, today\, 4.2 billion people live without safely managed sanitation. How can anyone lift themselves out of poverty without sanitation? We must expand access to safe toilets and leave no one behind. When someone has a ‘safely managed sanitation service’\, it means they use hygienic toilet facilities that are not shared with other households and where excreta are either separated from human contact and safely disposed of in situ or transported and treated off-site\, thereby protecting people and the environment from disease agents. Examples include flush/pour flush toilets connected to piped sewer systems; septic tanks or latrine pits; ventilated improved pit latrines; composting toilets; or pit latrines with slab covers. DESCRIPTION:During the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW)\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) are together calling for responsible use of antibiotics in humans and animals to reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance. \nThe aim of the week is to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance. It also wants to promote the correct usage of antibiotics across all fields in order to prevent further instances of antibiotic resistance. World Antibiotic Awareness Week has been held every November since 2015.  Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria\, viruses\, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance\, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat\, increasing the risk of disease spread\, severe illness and death. The World AMR Awareness Week is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. \nThe theme for the World AMR Awareness Week 2024 is “Educate. Advocate. Act now.” This theme was chosen based on feedback from an online survey among stakeholders from the human\, animal\, plant\, and environmental health sectors\, which collected nearly 200 responses globally. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global health and socioeconomic crisis. It has significant impacts on human and animal health\, food production and the environment. Drug-resistant-pathogens pose a threat to everyone\, everywhere. Yet\, much more can be done to raise public and stakeholder awareness. Therefore\, this year’s theme calls on the global community to educate stakeholders on AMR\, advocate for bold commitments and take concrete actions in response to AMR. The 2024 UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR and the fourth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR\, for instance\, provide a critical window of opportunity for political and financial commitments as well as increased accountability in response to AMR. Stronger political leadership\, advocacy and accountability are needed at all levels and the time to act is now. DESCRIPTION:European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) provides a platform and support for national campaigns on prudent use of antibiotics. \nEAAD is coordinated by ECDC. Each year EAAD is marked across Europe by national campaigns on or around 18 November. EAAD is a leading European health initiative acknowledging the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance and recognising that raising awareness about the need for the prudent use of antibiotics in human\, as well as in veterinary medicine\, is an important step in curbing antibiotic resistance. What started in 2008 as a small initiative providing a platform for national campaigns in the EU/EEA has grown over the years through collaboration with WHO/Europe and partners across Europe and internationally.
