SUMMARY:World Brain Day / Wereld Hersendag 2026
DESCRIPTION:Click image to read\nThere are many days related to neurological diseases being celebrated by professional organizations in collaboration with World Health Organization\, national organizations and local health ministries including World Stroke day\, Epilepsy Day\, Rabies Day. \nThese days have proven to be extremely helpful in promoting public awareness and generating advocacy throughout the globe including developing Asian\, African and Latin American countries. The World Federation of Neurology was established on July 22 1957. It was suggested by the Public Awareness and Advocacy Committee that 22 July 2014 should be celebrated as “World Brain Day”. This proposal was announced at WCN\, Council of Delegates meeting on 22 September\, 2013 and the proposal was received with a warm welcome by delegates. The Board of Trustees meeting in February 2014 endorsed this proposal as an annual activity. World Brain Day 2026 is a global call to address these disparities and advocate for change. Science and medicine have made significant progress in understanding the brain\, yet millions of people globally still cannot access essential care. More than 3.4 billion people currently live with neurological conditions\, making brain disorders the leading cause of disability worldwide. Access to neurological care remains uneven across countries\, regions\, and communities.   Many people still face barriers including cost\, lack of trained specialists\, long waiting times\, stigma\, and limited access to services \nLinks:\nWorld Brain Day

SUMMARY:Wereld Sjögren’s Dag / World Sjögren’s Day (Syndroom van Sjögren) 2026
\nLinks:\nWorld Sjögren’s Day Is July 23. SUMMARY:World #DrowningPrevention Day / Dag ter voorkoming van verdrinking 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Drowning Prevention Day\, declared through the April 2021 UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/75/273 “Global drowning prevention”\, is held annually on 25 July. \nThis global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and to offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. All stakeholders – governments\, UN agencies\, civil society organizations\, the private sector\, academia and individuals – are invited to mark World Drowning Prevention Day by highlighting the need for urgent\, coordinated and multi-sectoral action on proven measures such as: \n\ninstalling barriers controlling access to water;\nproviding safe places away from water such as crèches for pre-school children with capable childcare;\nteaching swimming\, water safety and safe rescue skills;\ntraining bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation;\nsetting and enforcing safe boating\, shipping and ferry regulations;\nimproving flood risk management.\n\nThe UN General Assembly resolution invited WHO to coordinate actions on drowning prevention within the UN system. In this capacity\, WHO leads preparations for World Drowning Prevention Day by producing related advocacy materials\, hosting a global launch event and supporting national and local activities in countries and communities around the world. Every year\, an estimated 236\,000 people drown\, making drowning a major public health problem worldwide. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death globally for children and young people aged 1-24 years. Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death\, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths. The global burden of death from drowning is felt in all economies and regions\, however: \n\nlow- and middle-income countries account for over 90% of unintentional drowning deaths;\nover half of the world’s drowning occurs in the WHO Western Pacific Region and WHO South-East Asia Region;\ndrowning death rates are highest in the WHO Western Pacific Region\, and are 27-32 times higher than those seen in the United Kingdom or Germany\, respectively.\n\nLinks:\nWorld Drowning Prevention Day \nWHO’s work on drowning prevention \nA guide to preventing drowning \n146 mensen verdronken in 2024 \n100 inwoners verdronken in 2025\, vooral 60-plussers

SUMMARY:Wereld Hoofd- en halskankerdag / World Head and Neck Cancer Day 2026
World Head and Neck Cancer Day

SUMMARY:World Hepatitis Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Hepatitis Day is observed each year on 28 July to raise awareness of viral hepatitis\, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and liver cancer. \nWorld Hepatitis Day\, 28 July\, is an opportunity to step up national and international efforts on hepatitis\, encourage actions and engagement by individuals\, partners and the public and highlight the need for a greater global response as outlined in the World Health Organization (WHO) Global hepatitis report of 2017. The date of 28 July was chosen because it is the birthday of Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg\, who discovered hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus. Low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030. \nThe World Hepatitis Day 2026 theme\, “Hepatitis: Let’s break it down”\, is a call to remove the barriers that stand between people and the services that can save their lives. Viral hepatitis continues to be a major cause of preventable illness and death worldwide. The tools needed to eliminate viral hepatitis already exist. Effective vaccines\, accurate diagnostics\, curative treatments for hepatitis C\, and lifelong therapies for hepatitis B can prevent infections\, save lives\, and reduce liver cancer and cirrhosis. Despite this\, millions of people remain undiagnosed\, untreated\, or unable to access care due to stigma\, limited awareness\, health system gaps\, and persistent inequalities. The 2026 campaign calls for turning proven science into action through stronger political commitment\, sustained investment\, and efforts to expand equitable access to prevention\, testing\, treatment\, and care. \nLinks:\nWorld Hepatitis Day

SUMMARY:Wereld Longkankerdag / World Lung Cancer Day 2026

SUMMARY:World Mosquito Day / Wereld Muggen Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Mosquito Day\, observed annually on 20 August\, is a commemoration of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that female anopheline mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans\, thus confirming the mosquito-malaria theory\, an idea that had been building in recent years through the work of various contributors such as Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran and Patrick Manson. \nPrior to the discovery of the transmitting organism\, vector\, there were few means for controlling the spread of the disease although the discovery of quinine in treatment had alleviated the problem of treatment. According to one survey\, nearly half the world population was at significant risk from malaria in the 19th century with a 10% mortality among those infected. Ross had already conducted experiments with Culex (possibly C. fatigans) fed on birds infected with bird malaria Protesoma relictum (now Plasmodium relictum) in 1894 and noted that they developed in mosquito gut and had surmised that the same may happen in malaria. The discovery was made in a small laboratory in Begumpet area of Secunderabad\, Hyderabad. Today the laboratory is known as the Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Parasitology and houses a small museum on Ross and his malaria research. The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine holds Mosquito Day celebrations every year\, including events such as parties and exhibitions. The event was inspired by a tea party honouring Ross held on 20 August 1931 by the Ross Institute and Hospital for Tropical Diseases\, which merged with the School in 1934. \nLinks:\nWorld Mosquito Day\n \nWorld Mosquito Week \nWereld Muggen Dag \nWorld Mosquito Day 2026: Which Mosquito Spreads Which Disease?

SUMMARY:Voor wie geef jij? – collecteweek KWF Kankerbestrijding (Radio 2 NPO)

SUMMARY:Zorgen over zwemwater - publicatie
In 2024 vertoonden vrijwel alle 205 onderzochte officiële zwemwateren meerdere chemische normoverschrijdingen. \nLinks:\nOnderzoek: vrijwel alle zwemwateren chemisch vervuild \nOnderzoek: zwemwater Gaasperplas\, Nieuwe Meer en Ouderkerkerplas zwaar vervuild met chemicaliën \nSterke toename in verkoop van PFAS-bestrijdingsmiddelen geven zorgen om drinkwatervoorziening – publicatie \n#WorldWaterDay / #WereldWaterDag / UN #WorldWaterReport – release 2026 \nRisicobeoordeling van opkomende stoffen in oppervlaktewater voor drinkwater (2017-2020). SUMMARY:Proposed Tata Steel subsidy may rise to €11 billion - publicatie / petitie
\nProposed Tata Steel subsidy may rise to €11 billion \nStop miljardensteun aan grote vervuiler Tata – petitie

SUMMARY:#Migraine12Stories European Migraine Day of Action / Europese Migraine-dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, on September 12\, the European Migraine & Headache Alliance (EMHA) celebrates the European Migraine Day. \nMigraine is a chronic disease which negatively influences patients’ lives and their ability to fully integrate within society. About 15% of the European population has to deal with this neurological disease . It means that in average\, in your country\, 1 in 7 people suffer from Migraine. Many of them are silent and seem to live an apparent normal life but the reality is other. Migraine is not just a headache; migraine is a disease that keeps people in the dark for hours\, days and years in a whole life. Pain is just one of the many symptoms that patients suffering from migraine face\, making them episodically enable to think\, to work and/or to perform normal social activities for several times. As a result\, migraine has a devastating impact on their life and loved ones. \nLinks:\nEuropean Migraine Day of Action with MEPS in the European Parliamentean Migraine Day of Action

SUMMARY:A New Tattoo : Festival met een Randje 2026

SUMMARY:Five years after introduction of an opt-out consent system for organ donation; lessons learned from England and the Netherlands - publication
DESCRIPTION:Five years after changing from opt-in to opt-out consent systems in England and the Netherlands\, the report ‘Five years after introduction of an opt-out consent system for organ donation; lessons learned from England and the Netherlands‘ shows the results of the examination of the impact on donor registrations\, consent rates\, donor numbers\, and reflect on lessons learned. \nOpt-out legislation was implemented in May 2020 in England and July 2020 in the Netherlands. In England\, 44% of the population is now registered; 40% recording an opt-in decision and 4% an opt-out decision. In the Netherlands\, mandated donor registration resulted in the entire adult population having their decision recorded: “Yes\, I want to be a donor” (34%)\, “No objection” (24%)\, or “No\, I don’t want to be a donor” (31%)\, while 11% leave the “Decision to next of kin”. Despite these structural changes\, the consent categories created by opt-out legislation (“deemed” consent in England and “No objection” in the Netherlands) remain challenging in practice\, with fewer than 50% of families agreeing to donation. In England\, the family consent rate declined from 69% to 57% between 2020 and 2025 and the donor numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels. In contrast\, the Netherlands experienced a modest increase in family consent rates and donor numbers compared to the opt-in consent system. Opt-out legislation provides an important policy framework\, but sustained system-level commitment remains essential. \nLinks:\nNieuwe donorwet levert beperkt aantal extra donoren op: ‘Categorie ‘geen bezwaar’ blijft uitdagend’ \n2014\, Donorweek

SUMMARY:#WLAD2026 World Lymphoma Awareness Day / Wereld Lymfklierkankerdag 2026
DESCRIPTION:15 September marks World Lymphoma Awareness Day (WLAD)\, and this year\, we are focused on empowering people living with lymphoma and care partners approach tough conversations with greater confidence. \nBeing diagnosed with lymphoma or CLL can be overwhelming – physically\, emotionally\, personally and professionally. According to the Lymphoma Coalition’s 2024 Global Patient Survey\, 67% of people living with lymphoma reported emotional effects like anxiety\, depression and fear of the cancer coming back or getting worse. Yet many aren’t talking to their healthcare teams or seeking support. For World Lymphoma Awareness Day 2026\, the global community is coming together through the campaign\, Navigating Lymphoma and CLL Together. This year’s campaign shines a light on the challenges people may experience throughout diagnosis\, treatment\, survivorship and beyond. It also recognises the important role patient organisations play as trusted guides\, providing reliable information\, practical support\, education\, and compassion at every stage of the journey. \nLinks:\nLymphoma Awareness Day

SUMMARY:Zoutmaxdag 2026

SUMMARY:World Patient Safety Day / Werelddag voor Patiëntveiligheid 2026
DESCRIPTION:Patient safety is a discipline that emphasizes safety in health care through the prevention\, reduction\, reporting\, and analysis of medical error that often leads to adverse effects. \nThe frequency and magnitude of avoidable adverse events experienced by patients was not well known until the 1990s\, when multiple countries reported staggering numbers of patients harmed and killed by medical errors. Recognizing that healthcare errors impact 1 in every 10 patients around the world\, the World Health Organization calls patient safety an endemic concern. Indeed\, patient safety has emerged as a distinct healthcare discipline supported by an immature yet developing scientific framework. There is a significant transdisciplinary body of theoretical and research literature that informs the science of patient safety. No one should be harmed in health care. Yet thousands of patients across the world suffer avoidable harm\, or are put at risk of injury\, while receiving health care every single day. The 72nd World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA 72.6 ‘Global action on patient safety’ on 25 May 2019. The resolution recognizes patient safety as a global health priority and endorses the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be observed annually on 17 September. World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety. Furthermore\, the Day brings together patients\, families\, caregivers\, communities\, health workers\, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety. The theme of the very first World Patient Safety Day in 2019 was aimed at establishing the legacy of the day and highlighting the importance of prioritizing and addressing patient safety globally by all stakeholders. From 2020 and in the coming years\, a new theme will be selected each year\, raising awareness and promoting positive change around patient safety priority areas. 2026 theme: “Safe care for life!“. \nLinks:\nWorld Patient Safety Day

SUMMARY:Head and neck cancer awareness week / Hoofd- en Nekkankerweek 2026
DESCRIPTION:Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers that starts in the mouth\, nose\, throat\, larynx\, sinuses\, or salivary glands. \nSymptoms for head and neck cancer may include a lump or sore that does not heal\, a sore throat that does not go away\, trouble swallowing\, or a change in the voice; there may also be unusual bleeding\, facial swelling\, or trouble breathing. About 75% of head and neck cancer is caused by the use of alcohol or tobacco. Other risk factors include betel quid\, certain types of human papillomavirus\, radiation exposure\, certain workplace exposures\, and Epstein-Barr virus. Head and neck cancers are most commonly of the squamous cell carcinoma type. The diagnosis is confirmed by tissue biopsy. The degree of spread may be determined by medical imaging and blood tests. Not using tobacco or alcohol can reduce the risk for head and neck cancer. While screening in the general population does not appear to be useful\, screening high risk groups by examination of the throat might be useful. \nHead and neck cancer often is curable if it is diagnosed early; however\, outcomes are typically poor if it is diagnosed late. Treatment may include a combination of surgery\, radiation therapy\, chemotherapy\, and targeted therapy. Following treatment of one head and neck cancer\, people are at higher risk of having a second cancer. In 2015\, head and neck cancers globally affected more than 5.5 million people (2.4 million mouth\, 1.7 million throat\, and 1.4 million larynx cancer)\, and it has caused over 379\,000 deaths (146\,000 mouth\, 127\,400 throat\, 105\,900 larynx cancer). Together\, they are the seventh most-frequent cancer and the ninth most-frequent cause of death from cancer. In the United States\, about 1% of people are affected at some point in their life\, and males are affected twice as often as females. The usual age at diagnosis is between 55 and 65 years old. The average 5-year survival following diagnosis in the developed world is 42-64%. \nLinks:\nHead and neck cancer

SUMMARY:#IWDP #IDSL Week of Deaf People / Week of the Deaf / Day of Sign Languages 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Week of Deaf People / Week of the Deaf has been celebrated annually across the world during the last full week of September to recognise that deaf people have our own communities\, our own cultures\, our own languages\, sign languages\, which unite them all. \nThe United Nations (UN) General Assembly has proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf. The resolution A/RES/72/161 establishing the day acknowledges that early access to sign language and services in sign language\, including quality education available in sign language\, is vital to the growth and development of the deaf individual and critical to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. It recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us” in terms of working with deaf communities. In 2018\, it was celebrated together with the official International Day of Sign Languages\, declared by the United Nations (UN)\, for the first time. The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD)\, its national associations\, and their affiliates all over the world observe International Week of the Deaf from Monday through Sunday\, culminating in International Day of the Deaf on the final Sunday of the week. In order to commemorate International Week of the Deaf\, the WFD invites its national associations and their affiliates to center their celebrations on the theme of Human Rights through Sign Languages. With this emphasis\, deaf culture and the accomplishments of deaf people are highlighted more and are positively portrayed. This emphasis fosters better deaf people’s rights advocacy activities and strengthens the bonds of solidarity between deaf people and those who support them. 2026 theme: “Declaring deaf people’s human rights”. \nLinks:\nInternational Week of Deaf People 2026 \nDay of Sign Languages \nWorld Federation of the Deaf 75th anniversary \n2016-07-15\, Halfdoof
