DESCRIPTION:Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers that starts in the mouth\, nose\, throat\, larynx\, sinuses\, or salivary glands. \nSymptoms for head and neck cancer may include a lump or sore that does not heal\, a sore throat that does not go away\, trouble swallowing\, or a change in the voice; there may also be unusual bleeding\, facial swelling\, or trouble breathing. About 75% of head and neck cancer is caused by the use of alcohol or tobacco. Other risk factors include betel quid\, certain types of human papillomavirus\, radiation exposure\, certain workplace exposures\, and Epstein-Barr virus. Head and neck cancers are most commonly of the squamous cell carcinoma type. The diagnosis is confirmed by tissue biopsy. The degree of spread may be determined by medical imaging and blood tests. Not using tobacco or alcohol can reduce the risk for head and neck cancer. While screening in the general population does not appear to be useful\, screening high risk groups by examination of the throat might be useful. \nHead and neck cancer often is curable if it is diagnosed early; however\, outcomes are typically poor if it is diagnosed late. Treatment may include a combination of surgery\, radiation therapy\, chemotherapy\, and targeted therapy. Following treatment of one head and neck cancer\, people are at higher risk of having a second cancer. In 2015\, head and neck cancers globally affected more than 5.5 million people (2.4 million mouth\, 1.7 million throat\, and 1.4 million larynx cancer)\, and it has caused over 379\,000 deaths (146\,000 mouth\, 127\,400 throat\, 105\,900 larynx cancer). Together\, they are the seventh most-frequent cancer and the ninth most-frequent cause of death from cancer. In the United States\, about 1% of people are affected at some point in their life\, and males are affected twice as often as females. The usual age at diagnosis is between 55 and 65 years old. DESCRIPTION:Patient safety is a discipline that emphasizes safety in health care through the prevention\, reduction\, reporting\, and analysis of medical error that often leads to adverse effects. \nThe frequency and magnitude of avoidable adverse events experienced by patients was not well known until the 1990s\, when multiple countries reported staggering numbers of patients harmed and killed by medical errors. Recognizing that healthcare errors impact 1 in every 10 patients around the world\, the World Health Organization calls patient safety an endemic concern. Indeed\, patient safety has emerged as a distinct healthcare discipline supported by an immature yet developing scientific framework. There is a significant transdisciplinary body of theoretical and research literature that informs the science of patient safety. No one should be harmed in health care. Yet thousands of patients across the world suffer avoidable harm\, or are put at risk of injury\, while receiving health care every single day. The 72nd World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA 72.6 ‘Global action on patient safety’ on 25 May 2019. The resolution recognizes patient safety as a global health priority and endorses the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be observed annually on 17 September. World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety. Furthermore\, the Day brings together patients\, families\, caregivers\, communities\, health workers\, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety. DESCRIPTION:In dit Kenniscafé worden de ‘eeuwige chemicaliën’\, zoals PFAS\, en de invloed van synthetische stoffen op onze gezondheid en het ecosysteem onderzocht. \nWe leven in een wereld vol stoffen die door de mens zijn ontwikkeld\, maar die van oorsprong niet in de natuur voorkomen: denk aan plastics\, geneesmiddelen en industriële chemicaliën. Het zijn materialen die ons leven ingrijpend hebben veranderd\, maar die vaak zijn geïntroduceerd zonder dat goed bekend was hoe ze zich in het milieu zouden gedragen. Op dit moment liggen PFAS onder een vergrootglas: een groep moeilijk afbreekbare stoffen die voor allerlei doeleinden worden gebruikt. Ze zijn bijvoorbeeld ontworpen om regenkleding waterafstotend te maken en dienen als anti-aanbaklaag in pannen. Recent waarschuwde het RIVM nog voor het eten van eieren van hobbykippen vanwege te hoge PFAS-gehaltes\, die schadelijk kunnen zijn voor de gezondheid. Wat weten we van deze stoffen? Waarom zijn ze zo lastig uit onze omgeving te weren? En wat zegt dit over de manier waarop we in de toekomst met nieuwe chemische verbindingen moeten omgaan? De organisatie zet zich in voor drie doelen: minder kanker\, meer genezing en een betere levenskwaliteit voor wie kanker heeft (gehad). Kom op tegen Kanker pleit tegelijk voor een beter kankerbeleid en structurele oplossingen om de ziekte te vermijden\, te bestrijden en te verzachten. Om dat te kunnen doen\, mobiliseren ze zoveel mogelijk mensen om zich te engageren als zorgvrijwilliger\, als actievoerder of als donateur. De organisatie is bekend van de gelijknamige actie Kom op tegen Kanker\, waarin het onder andere door het verkopen van plantjes geld inzamelt. DESCRIPTION:The Week of Deaf People / Week of the Deaf has been celebrated annually across the world during the last full week of September to recognise that deaf people have our own communities\, our own cultures\, our own languages\, sign languages\, which unite them all. \nThe United Nations (UN) General Assembly has proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf. The resolution A/RES/72/161 establishing the day acknowledges that early access to sign language and services in sign language\, including quality education available in sign language\, is vital to the growth and development of the deaf individual and critical to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. It recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us” in terms of working with deaf communities. In 2018\, it was celebrated together with the official International Day of Sign Languages\, declared by the United Nations (UN)\, for the first time. The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD)\, its national associations\, and their affiliates all over the world observe International Week of the Deaf from Monday through Sunday\, culminating in International Day of the Deaf on the final Sunday of the week. In order to commemorate International Week of the Deaf\, the WFD invites its national associations and their affiliates to center their celebrations on the theme of Human Rights through Sign Languages. With this emphasis\, deaf culture and the accomplishments of deaf people are highlighted more and are positively portrayed. DESCRIPTION:In 2000\, World Heart Day was founded to inform people around the globe that Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the world’s leading cause of death and is the biggest global awareness-raising platform for CVD\, celebrated every year on 29 September. \nIn May 2012\, world leaders committed to reducing global mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025. CVD is accountable for nearly half of all NCD deaths making it the world’s number one killer. World Heart Day is\, therefore\, the perfect platform for the CVD community to unite in the fight against CVD and reduce the global disease burden. Created by the World Heart Federation\, World Heart Day informs people around the globe that CVD\, including heart disease and stroke\, is the world’s leading cause of death claiming 17.5 million lives each year\, and highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. It aims to drive action to educate people that by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use\, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity\, at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided. DESCRIPTION:Stoptober (een porte-manteauwoord van stop en oktober) is een jaarlijkse\, van oorsprong Britse\, campagne die ook in Nederland in gehouden wordt om in de maand oktober niet te roken en daardoor ook helemaal te stoppen met roken. \nStoptober is een landelijke campagne waarin mensen 28 dagen samen stoppen met roken. Dat klinkt misschien als een korte periode\, maar juist die 28 dagen maken het verschil. Wie 28 dagen niet rookt\, heeft vijf keer meer kans om blijvend te stoppen. De kracht van Stoptober zit in het collectieve. Iedereen stopt op hetzelfde moment\, krijgt dezelfde steun\, en maakt deel uit van iets groters. Met als doel dat mensen rekening houden met mensen met een witte stok. Dat mensen bijvoorbeeld hulp aanbieden om een lastig punt te overbruggen of veilig over te steken. Het thema van 2025 is: op pad met de witte stok\, geef ons de ruimte. Het idee is dat er aandacht wordt gevraagd om mensen met de witte stok de ruimte te geven die ze nodig hebben om zich te oriënteren onderweg. Of bijvoorbeeld hulp aan te bieden om een lastig punt te overbruggen of veilig over te steken. De afgelopen jaren is er al veel actie geweest voor de witte stok. Maar om mensen zich hier echt bewust van te maken\, moet je de boodschap blijven herhalen. As a result of drug resistance\, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat\, increasing the risk of disease spread\, severe illness and death. The World AMR Awareness Week is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. \nThe theme for WAAW 2025 is “Act Now: Protect Our Present\, Secure Our Future.” This theme underscores the urgent need to take bold\, united action to address AMR. DESCRIPTION:Sinds 1998 wordt jaarlijks op 22 oktober de Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) georganiseerd met elk jaar een ander thema.\n\nStotteren wordt in de ICD-10 omschreven als “Spraak die wordt gekenmerkt door frequente herhaling of verlenging van geluiden\, lettergrepen of woorden of ook wel door herhaalde aarzelingen of pauzes die het vloeiend verloop van de spraak onderbreken. Dit dient alleen dan als een stoornis te worden geklasseerd indien de ernst ervan zodanig is dat het vloeiend verloop van de spraak duidelijk wordt belemmerd”. In dit lemma wordt uitsluitend de meest voorkomende vorm van stotteren besproken\, de communicatiestoornis (subcategorie) die in de DSM-IV (voorganger van DSM V) is ingedeeld bij de ontwikkelingsstoornissen. Bij mensen die stotteren is het spraakmotorisch systeem minder stabiel dan bij mensen die niet stotteren. Wanneer er een storing in het spraakapparaat optreedt treed het stotteren op en dat kan zorgen voor een enorm schaamte- en minderwaardigheidsgevoel. Storingen in het spraakapparaat treden tijdens zingen veel minder vaak op dan tijdens (spontaan) spreken. DESCRIPTION:Het wetenschappelijk rapport ‘Using Satellite Observations for Assessing the Spatial and Temporal Variation of Nitrogen Emissions and Deposition in the Netherlands‘ presenteert de resultaten van een onderzoek naar de toegevoegde waarde van satellieten voor het monitoren van reactief stikstof in Nederland. \nDeze studie maakt deel uit van het Nationaal Kennisprogramma Stikstof (NKS)\, gefinancierd door het Ministerie van Landbouw\, Visserij\, Voedselzekerheid en Natuur (LVVN). Het NKS-programma heeft als doel het waarnemen en de modellering van stikstof in Nederland verder te ontwikkelen en te verbeteren. Het NKS satellietonderzoek beschreven in dit rapport is uitgevoerd in de jaren 2023-2024. Er is gebruikgemaakt van ammoniak waarnemingen van de CrIS- en IASI-instrumenten\, en stikstofdioxide waarnemingen van het TROPOMI-instrument. Het werk is uitgevoerd door wetenschappers van TNO\, KNMI\, RIVM en de universiteiten van Leiden en Wageningen. Het onderzoek bestond uit de volgende studies:\n• Het uitvoeren van meerjarige benchmarksimulaties met de drie modellen OPS\, EMEP en LOTOS-EUROS\, en het evalueren van deze runs met grondmetingen van LML\, MAN en COTAG.\n• Het evalueren van de satellietmetingen op basis van kolommen van NH3 en NO2 gemeten met FTIR- en MAXDOAS/PANDORA-instrumenten in Nederland en wereldwijd.\n• Het evalueren van de simulaties van LOTOS-EUROS en EMEP met satellietmetingen van NO2 door TROPOMI en NH3 door CrIS en IASI.\n• Het schatten van de emissies van NH3 en NOx op basis van deze satellietmetingen met behulp van vier verschillende methoden. \nHet rapport is geschreven in het Engels. \nLinks:\nUsing Satellite Observations for Assessing the Spatial and Temporal Variation of Nitrogen Emissions and Deposition in the Netherlands \nBetere kennis van stikstof door satellietmetingen en gebruik meerdere modellen
