DESCRIPTION:Het syndroom van Alagille (Alagille syndrome)\, genoemd naar Daniel Alagille\, is een complexe aandoening van een aantal orgaansystemen\, voornamelijk de lever\, het hart\, de ogen\, het gelaat en het skelet. \nDe belangrijkste symptomen zijn die van cholestase (gepaard gaand met jeuk en geelzucht)\, herkenbaar aan weinig galwegen in een leverbiopt; aangeboren hartafwijkingen\, vooral van de longarterieën\, oogafwijkingen\, een typische gelaatsvorm\, en ‘vlinderwervels‘. Nierafwijkingen en afwijkingen aan het centraal zenuwstelsel komen ook voor. De mortaliteit is ongeveer 10% waarbij vaatproblemen in het centraal zenuwstelsel\, hartziekte en leverziekte de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken zijn. De verschijnselen zijn ook binnen 1 familie zeer variabel. De ziekte is autosomaal dominant erfelijk. Nieuwe mutaties (sporadische gevallen) komen frequent voor. Als bekend is wat de aard van de afwijking in een familie is\, is prenatale diagnostiek in principe mogelijk. Genetisch onderzoek louter om de diagnose te verifiëren bij iemand die aan de klinische criteria voldoet\, heeft geen consequenties en wordt nog niet aanbevolen. Nog niet volledig opgehelderd. Bij ca 70% van de patiënten zijn afwijkingen in een gen genaamd JAG1 aantoonbaar. Het gen ligt op chromosoom 20\, locatie 20p12. Het codeert voor een eiwit\, Jagged 1\, dat op de celmembraan van sommige cellen wordt gevonden en dat een functie heeft bij signaaluitwisseling tussen cellen zowel tijdens de embryonale ontwikkeling als daarna. DESCRIPTION:On 31 May 2021\, the World Health Assembly (WHA) recognized 30 January as World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day through decision WHA74(18)\, an awareness day for addressing neglected tropical diseases. \nJanuary 30 is the anniversary of the landmark 2012 London Declaration on NTDs\, which unified partners across sectors\, countries and disease communities to push for greater investment and action on NTDs. 2020 was a special year for the global health response to NTDs\, with WHO announcing new goals during the year to guide progress against NTDs until 2030. 30 January 2024 is the fourth annual World NTD Day. The theme serves as a rallying call-for-action and builds on a call to action from President Embaló of Guinea-Bissau in July 2023 in a piece published in Health Policy Watch. World NTD Day wants to end neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). To achieve this\, we need sustainable financing for NTDs. Investing in NTDs is a global health and development success story. So far\, 50 countries have eliminated an NTD\, showing progress is possible. In 2020\, 600 million fewer people required interventions against NTDs than in 2010. Yet\, for some time\, a lack of resources has been seen as a significant barrier to the control\, elimination\, and eradication of NTDs. This challenge has only been intensified by COVID-19 which has caused severe delays and disruption to NTD programmes\, as well as a massive repurposing and diversion of resources. \nOn World Neglected Tropical Disease Day 2024\, WHO is calling on everybody\, including leaders and communities\, to unite and act to address the inequalities that drive neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and to make bold\, sustainable investments to free the estimated 1.62 billion people\, in the world’s most vulnerable communities\, from a vicious cycle of disease and poverty. The purpose of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day is to raise the profile of neglected tropical diseases\, the suffering they cause and to garner support towards their control\, elimination and eradication\, in line with the programmatic targets set out in the NTD road map 2021−2030 and the commitments of the 2022 Kigali declaration on neglected tropical diseases. On 31 May 2021\, the Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly recognized 30 January as World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day through the unanimous approval of decision WHA74(18)  by WHO Member States. DESCRIPTION:The 10th Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) 183 Parties\, representing more than 90% of the world’s population\, work together to enhance and advance tobacco control. \nIn the first 20 years of this century\, tobacco prevalence among adults fell from nearly 33% to 22%\, even though the planet’s population has continued to expand. Dr Adriana Blanco Marquizo\, Head of the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC welcomed attendees and warned of the increasing availability of novel and emerging nicotine and tobacco products. These are\, “becoming a very troubling problem with an alarming increase in the use of these products by young people. Part of this increase is due to disingenuous tobacco industry messages portraying these products as a replacement for real tobacco control measures\, as the industry again tries to claim a seat at the table – as part of the solution to an epidemic that the industry created and continues to sustain.” She also asked everyone to be alert to the relentless interference of the tobacco industry in every corner of the world\, noting “the efforts that the tobacco industry has undertaken in trying to derail not only COP10 but each and every COP.” COP is the governing body of the WHO FCTC and comprises all Parties to the Convention. It keeps under regular review the implementation of the Convention and takes the decisions necessary to promote its effective implementation. The Conference will consider a wide range of work to direct the future of the WHO FCTC in its work in fighting the tobacco pandemic\, which kills 8.7 million people worldwide every year. \nThe Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products (MOP) brings together 68 Parties that have been working together to halt illegal trade in tobacco products. The meeting\, which runs from 12 to 15 February\, is the third such gathering of the MOP and the first since 2021. Illicit trade accounts for about 11% of total global tobacco trade\, and its elimination could increase global tax revenues by an estimated US$ 47.4 billion annually. The MOP will review the extensive efforts underway to implement a tracking and tracing system\, which is an important step in eliminating illicit trade. A key component of the global tracking and tracing regime is the global information-sharing focal point\, and the first phase of that initiative will begin to become available to Parties once the meeting concludes. Following an initial pilot phase\, the new system will be open to all Parties to the Protocol\, helping them to further secure the tobacco supply chain and assist in investigations. The MOP will also consider ways to improve implementation of the Protocol\, determine the road ahead and highlight the need for additional evidence-based research. Reporting and information-sharing mechanisms will also be considered\, as the sharing of experiences and best practices among Parties is key to advancing the fight against illicit trade. Every year\, more than 400\,000 children and adolescents below 20\, are diagnosed with cancer. The rate of survival depends on the region\, with 80% survival in most High Income Countries but as low as 20% only in Low and MIddle Income Countries. The Target Goal of the WHO Global Childhood Cancer Initiative is to eliminate all pain and suffering of children fighting cancer and achieve at least 60% survival for all children diagnosed with cancer around the world by 2030. Je kan dan zo moe worden dat je vreselijk suf bent of zomaar in slaap valt\, precies zoals met narcolepsie dat gaat. Met Suddenly Sleepy Saturday wil men meer bekendheid geven aan de slaap-waakstoornis narcolepsie. Narcolepsie is een chronische neurologische aandoening\, die wereldwijd gemiddeld bij 40-60 van de 10.000 mensen voorkomt. In Nederland zijn er dan ook naar schatting tussen de 6.000 en 8.000 mensen die lijden aan narcolepsie\, maar bij slechts 1.000 patiënten is de diagnose gesteld. Omdat de ziekte relatief onbekend is bij artsen en vaak verward wordt met psychische aandoeningen duurt het gemiddeld tien jaar voordat de juiste diagnose wordt gesteld\, en bij sommigen wordt de diagnose helemaal niet gesteld. It takes place from March 20 – 30 to promote more environmentally and human health-friendly agricultural practices\, these dates are not coincidental; they coincide with the first days of spring and also mark the beginning of pesticide spraying in agricultural fields. \nPesticide Action Week is a powerful force for awareness-raising and action for a pesticide-free Europe. Every year\, hundreds of citizens\, associations\, farmers\, companies\, teachers\, local governments organise a wide range of events: conferences\, film screenings\, theater shows\, open door days\, organic cooking classes\, exhibitions\, workshops\, information booths\, farmer markets\, community organic meals\, etc. The public is invited to get better informed about the health and environmental challenges caused by pesticides and learn more about alternatives by taking part in one of the hundreds of organised activities. Through PAN Europe’s involvement\, this movement is now reaching beyond France to other European countries.
