SUMMARY:#ALSMNDWithoutBorders Global day of recognition of ALS/MND / Wereld ALS dag 2025
DESCRIPTION:Every year the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations celebrates 21 June as the global day of recognition of ALS/MND – a disease that affects people in every country of the globe. \nALS/MND  is a global problem. It does not discriminate on the basis of race\, ethnicity\, socioeconomic status or region. There are people living with ALS/MND all over the world. For every person diagnosed\, the impact of the disease will be forever felt by their loved ones. Alliance members across the world use the hashtag #ALSMNDWithoutBorders on 21 June to raise awareness and funds on Global Day. June 21 is a solstice – a turning point – and each year the ALS/MND community undertake a range of activities to express their hope that this day will be another turning point in the search for cause\, treatment and cure of ALS/MND.\n \nThe PALS and CALS Advisory Council and the Alliance support the “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Optional Protocol” as brought forward by the United Nations. The Convention supports the global promotion and protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all people with disabilities\, including those living with ALS/MND. Of note\, the Alliance emphasizes the importance of Articles 9 and 19 surrounding a person’s independence and their rights to equal accessibility and participation in daily living and enjoyment of life. \nBy providing equal access to all aspects of daily living and services\, people living with ALS/MND are able to live autonomously and independently. This means that people living with ALS/MND are able to make their own choices or decisions about their daily living\, living arrangements\, healthcare provision\, and community involvement. Global provision of equal access to services such as transportation\, housing\, workplace environment\, medical facilities\, and information services can support both enjoyment and quality of life and support for a person’s independence. In addition to supporting the Convention\, these rights as they pertain to people living with ALS/MND are extrapolated into the Fundamental Rights of People Living with ALS/MND. \nLinks:\nArtists Against ALS

SUMMARY:#WorldDengueDay Wereld Knokkelkoorts Dag 2025
DESCRIPTION:Building on a rapidly growing global consensus\, in 2018 the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) started a worldwide dengue awareness campaign\, which included calling on the UN and WHO to designate a World Dengue Day. \nIts petition for a World Dengue Day has to date garnered over 26\,500 signatures\, endorsed by a growing and global collective of patients\, policy makers\, researchers\, professionals and advocates from over 110 countries\, who share the clear goal of reducing the burden of dengue around the world. In addition\, ISNTD also convened an international and multi-sectoral Dengue Advisory Group\, comprised of partners from Ministries of Health\, research and academia\, NGOs and civic society\, to guide this campaign. Such a move is not without precedent. On 15 June 2011\, ASEAN Health Ministers first declared that day — and each subsequent 15 June — ASEAN Dengue Day. This important annual event allows ASEAN members\, in coordination with WHO\, to consolidate dengue prevention and control measures. \nThe World Dengue Day campaign is aiming to achieve the same – on an international scale given the rapidly growing global threat of dengue. Growing population densities\, unplanned urban development\, poor water storage and unsatisfactory sanitary conditions are all common factors that contribute to the worsening burden of this mosquito-borne disease – not just for ASEAN\, but for many countries around the world. The disease has significant impact on the socio-economic status of every country. Tackling dengue is everyone’s concern. ISNTD-ADVA World Dengue Day Forum – Cross Sector Synergies marks a day that all governments\, civil societies\, public and private sectors\, schools\, universities and citizens\, can devote to dengue awareness-raising actions. Additionally\, the Forum will give countries around the world a platform to share their strategies for increasing public awareness of dengue\, mobilize resources for its prevention and control\, and demonstrate their commitment to tackling dengue. \nLinks:\nWorld Dengue Day

SUMMARY:World Blood Donor Day / Wereldbloeddonordag 2025
DESCRIPTION:World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is celebrated every year by people around the world on June 14\, it is celebrated on the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner on June 14\, 1868\, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system. \nWBDD was organised for the first time in 2005\, by a joint initiative of World Health Organisation\, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products\, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary\, life-saving gifts of blood. Transfusion of blood and blood products helps and save millions of lives every year. It can help patients who suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with higher quality of life\, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential\, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care. Access to safe and sufficient blood and blood products can help reduce rates of death and disability due to severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth. In many countries\, there is not an adequate supply of safe blood\, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available\, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors. The WHO’s goal is for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020. In 2014\, 60 countries have their national blood supplies based on 99-100% voluntary unpaid blood donations\, with 73 countries still largely dependent on family and paid donors. \n2025 theme: Give blood\, give hope: together we save lives. The WHO honors hope\, the kind you give with every drop of blood. Because millions of patients around the world rely on blood transfusions every year\, hope flows through every donation. \nLinks:\nWorld Blood Donor Day \nWereld Bloeddonordag

SUMMARY:#AlbinismDay Albinism Awareness Day / Albinisme Dag 2025
DESCRIPTION:Albinism is a rare\, non-contagious\, genetically inherited difference present at birth\, congenital absence of melanin in an animal or plant resulting in white hair\, feathers\, scales and skin and reddish pink or blue eyes. \nIn almost all types of albinism\, both parents must carry the gene for it to be passed on\, even if they do not have albinism themselves. The condition is found in both sexes regardless of ethnicity and in all countries of the world. Albinism results in a lack of pigmentation (melanin) in the hair\, skin and eyes\, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light. As a result\, almost all people with albinism are visually impaired and are prone to developing skin cancer. There is no cure for the absence of melanin that is central to albinism. While numbers vary\, it is estimated that in North America and Europe 1 in every 17\,000 to 20\,000 people have some form of albinism. The condition is much more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa\, with estimates of 1 in 1\,400 people being affected in Tanzania  and prevalence as high as 1 in 1\,000 reported for select populations in Zimbabwe and for other specific ethnic groups in Southern Africa. \nThe lack of melanin means persons with albinism are highly vulnerable to developing skin cancer. In some countries\, a majority of persons with albinism die from skin cancer between 30 and 40 years of age. Skin cancer is highly preventable when persons with albinism enjoy their right to health. This includes access to regular health checks\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing. In a significant number of countries\, these life-saving means are unavailable or inaccessible to them. Consequently\, in the realm of development measures\, persons with albinism have been and are among those “left furthest behind.” Therefore\, they ought to be targeted for human rights interventions in the manner envisioned by the Sustainable Development Goals. \nDue to a lack of melanin in the skin and eyes\, persons with albinism often have permanent visual impairment. They also face discrimination due to their skin colour; as such\, they are often subject to multiple and intersecting discrimination on the grounds of both disability and colour. People with albinism face multiple forms of discrimination worldwide. Albinism is still profoundly misunderstood\, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition\, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion. This leads to various forms of stigma and discrimination. \nIn some communities\, erroneous beliefs and myths\, heavily influenced by superstition\, put the security and lives of persons with albinism at constant risk. These beliefs and myths are centuries old and are present in cultural attitudes and practices around the world. While it has been reported that persons with albinism globally face discrimination and stigma\, information on cases of physical attacks against persons with albinism is mainly available from countries in Africa. \nPersons with albinism face more severe forms of discrimination and violence in those regions\, where the majority of the general population are relatively dark-skinned. In other words\, a greater degree of contrast in pigmentation often gives rise to a greater degree of discrimination. That appears to be the case in some sub-Saharan African countries where albinism is shrouded in myth and dangerous and erroneous beliefs. The figures on violations against persons with albinism are telling. There have been hundreds of cases of attacks and killings of persons with albinism reported in 28 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the past decade. The attacks have several root causes including ignorance\, longstanding stigma\, poverty and most abhorrently\, harmful practices emanating from manifestation of beliefs in witchcraft. The alarming reality is that these horrendous practices continue today. \nThe manner in which discrimination faced by persons with albinism manifests itself\, and its severity\, vary from region to region. In the western world\, including North America\, Europe and Australia\, discrimination often consists of name-calling\, persistent teasing and bullying of children with albinism. Little information is available from other regions such as Asia\, South America and the Pacific etc. However\, some reports indicate that in China and other Asian countries\, children with albinism face abandonment and rejection by their families. \nLinks:\nAlbinism Awareness Day \nAttacks against people with albinism are hate crimes \nNot ghosts but human beings

SUMMARY:Carcinogenic effects of long-term exposure from prenatal life to glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides in Sprague–Dawley rats - publication
DESCRIPTION:Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are the world’s most widely used weed control agents. Public health concerns have increased since the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen in 2015. \nTo further investigate the health effects of glyphosate and GBHs\, the Ramazzini Institute launched the Global Glyphosate Study (GGS)\, which is designed to test a wide range of toxicological outcomes. Reported in the research ‘Carcinogenic effects of long-term exposure from prenatal life to glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides in Sprague–Dawley rats‘ are the results of the carcinogenicity arm of the GGS. Glyphosate and two GBHs\, Roundup Bioflow used in the European Union (EU) and RangerPro used in the U.S.\, were administered to male and female Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats\, beginning at gestational day 6 (via maternal exposure) through 104 weeks of age. Glyphosate was administered through drinking water at three doses: the EU acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0.5 mg/kg body weight/day\, 5 mg/kg body weight/day and the EU no-observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of 50 mg/kg body weight/day. The two GBH formulations were administered at the same glyphosate-equivalent doses. \nIn all 3 treatment groups\, statistically significant dose-related increased trends or increased incidences of benign and malignant tumors at multiple anatomic sites were observed compared to historical and concurrent controls. These tumors arose in haemolymphoreticular tissues (leukemia)\, skin\, liver\, thyroid\, nervous system\, ovary\, mammary gland\, adrenal glands\, kidney\, urinary bladder\, bone\, endocrine pancreas\, uterus and spleen (hemangiosarcoma). Increased incidences occurred in both sexes. Most of these involved tumors that are rare in SD rats (background incidence < 1%) with 40% of leukemias deaths in the treated groups occurring before 52 weeks of age and increased early deaths were also observed for other solid tumors. \nGlyphosate and GBHs at exposure levels corresponding to the EU ADI and the EU NOAEL caused dose-related increases in incidence of multiple benign and malignant tumors in SD rats of both sexes. Early-life onset and mortality were observed for multiple tumors. These results provide robust evidence supporting IARC’s conclusion that there is “sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity [of glyphosate] in experimental animals”. Furthermore\, our data are consistent with epidemiological evidence on the carcinogenicity of glyphosate and GBHs.

SUMMARY:World Clubfoot Day / Wereld Klompvoet Dag 2025
DESCRIPTION:Clubfoot\, or talipes equinovarus\, is a treatable birth defect where one or both feet are rotated inward and downward that affects approximately 150\,000-200\,000 children each year. \nThe affected foot and leg may be smaller in size compared to the other. Approximately 50% of cases of clubfoot affect both feet. Most of the time\, it is not associated with other problems. Without treatment\, the foot remains deformed\, and people walk on the sides of their feet. This may lead to pain and difficulty walking. The exact cause is usually not identified. Both genetic and environmental factors are believed to be involved. If one identical twin is affected\, there is a 33% chance the other one will be as well. The underlying mechanism involves disruption of the muscles or connective tissue of the lower leg\, leading to joint contracture. Other abnormalities are associated 20% of the time\, with the most common being distal arthrogryposis and myelomeningocele. The diagnosis may be made at birth by examination or before birth during an ultrasound exam. \nInitial treatment is most often with the Ponseti method. This involves moving the foot into an improved position followed by casting\, which is repeated at weekly intervals. Once the inward bending is improved\, the Achilles tendon is often cut\, and braces are worn until the age of four. Initially\, the brace is worn nearly continuously and then just at night. In about 20% of cases\, further surgery is required. Treatment can be carried out by a range of healthcare providers and can generally be achieved in the developing world with few resources. Clubfoot occurs in 1 to 4 of every 1\,000 live births\, making it one of the most common birth defects affecting the legs. About 80% of cases occur in developing countries where there is limited access to care. Clubfoot is more common in firstborn children and males. It is more common among Māori people\, and less common among Chinese people. \nLinks:\nWorld Clubfoot Day

SUMMARY:#TobaccoExposed World #NoTobacco Day / Wereld Anti-Tabaksdag / Wereld Niet Roken Dag 2025
DESCRIPTION:World No Tobacco Day (WNTD)  is observed around the world every year on 31 May. \nThe yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco\, the business practices of tobacco companies\, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight against the use of tobacco\, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. The Member States of the WHO created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects\, which currently lead to more than 8 million deaths each year worldwide\, including 1.2 million as the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. The day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance around the globe from governments\, public health organizations\, smokers\, growers\, and the tobacco industry. \nLinks:\nWorld No Tobacco Day \nWHO raises alarm on tobacco industry environmental impact \nTabakNee \nIt’s Time to Ban Cigarette Filters \nVerenigd Koninkrijk stap dichter bij tabaksverbod \nEuropean Week Against Cancer \nOnderzoek: stoppen met roken loont meer dan gedacht \n11th Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control / 4th Meeting of the Parties (MOP4) to the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products 2025

SUMMARY:#MSConnections World MS Day / Wereld MS-dag 2025
DESCRIPTION:World multiple sclerosis (MS) Day is marked on 30 May\, it brings the global MS community together to share stories\, raise awareness and campaign with everyone affected by MS. \nWorld MS Day activities take place throughout the month of May and in early June. The campaign offers flexibility for individuals and organisations to achieve a variety of goals. MS is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). In 2024\, there are 2.9 million people living with MS worldwide. MS is an inflammatory demyelinating condition. It is caused by damage to myelin – a fatty material that insulates nerves. In MS\, the loss of myelin affects the way nerves conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain. Symptoms can include blurred vision\, weak limbs\, tingling sensations\, unsteadiness\, memory problems\, and fatigue. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. MS is two to three times more common in women than in men. There is no drug that can cure MS\, but treatments are available which can modify the course of the disease. \nThe theme for World MS Day 2024-2025 is diagnosis. The name of the campaign is My MS Diagnosis and the tagline: navigating MS together. The My MS Diagnosis campaign advocates for early and accurate diagnosis for everyone living with MS. It highlights the global barriers to diagnosing MS\, raising awareness by sharing real stories and data. We are calling for better MS training for healthcare professionals\, new research\, and clinical advancements in MS diagnosis. Together we are building informed\, caring communities and systems that support people diagnosed with MS. \nLinks:\nWorld MS Day

SUMMARY:#EmergencyMedicineDay 2025
DESCRIPTION:The aim of Emergency Medicine day is to unite the world population and decision makers to think and talk about emergency medicine and emergency medical care. \nIt is important to build awareness about the need for well developed\, well prepared and well organised emergency medical systems everywhere in the world to increase survival and reduce disability after any kind of urgent or emergent medical situation. Where the specialty in emergency medicine is not yet developed\, where emergency medical systems are not well structured\, where competences are not standardized and certified\, where resources for emergency medicine are insufficient\, there should be a strong voice to ask and claim for a change\, for a better life. The mission is to explain to the people that emergency medical care is better performed with competent professionals; doctors\, specialists in emergency medicine\, nurses trained in emergency and acute care\, paramedics\, technicians\, support personnel competent and working in organized structures and systems dedicated to emergency medical care. To show to people and governments that this organization makes a difference in terms of morbidity\, mortality\, and cost-effectiveness. The 27th of May is the day when Emergency Medicine in Europe took its beginning. In London a group of visionary people signed the founding act of the European Society for Emergency Medicine. The aim was to build up a system model to grant to every citizen in Europe a professional\, competent and above all timely response to any life\, organ or limb threatening acute condition. The 2025 theme\, “Proud to Provide Your Emergency Care\,” celebrates the dedication of emergency care providers who deliver critical\, life-saving services every day—often under immense pressure. \nLinks:\nEmergency Medicine day

SUMMARY:Landelijke stille actie voor zorg in Gaza - Een estafette-actie in de academische ziekenhuizen

SUMMARY:World AUTOimmune & AUTOinflammatory Arthritis Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:World AUTOimmune & AUTOinflammatory Arthritis Day is organized on May 20th annually. \nLack of awareness leads to relationship conflicts\, delayed diagnosis\, compromised quality of life\, and elevated healthcare costs. Education about these diseases\, including the fact they are full body diseases affecting many parts (joints\, tissues\, organs) is necessary to improve the lives of the 450 million worldwide affected. World AUTOimmune & AUTOinflammatory Arthritis Day was established by our nonprofit in 2012 to raise awareness about the AUTOimmune and AUTOinflammatory diseases that include inflammatory-driven arthritis (AiArthritis) as a major clinical component. This event historically unites thousands of people in 60 + countries worldwide to DRIVE global awareness and education about our diseases. It’s a day for ALL organizations\, we just manage it through the official World AiArthritis Day social media pages.  To catch the attention of those who do not understand our diseases\, including the type of arthritis associated with them\, we use AUTO-themed awareness and education materials. \nLinks:\nWorld AUTOimmune & AUTOinflammatory Arthritis Day

SUMMARY:Robert Koch Colloquium 2025 "Empowering Public Health: From Data to Global Health"
DESCRIPTION:The Robert Koch Colloquium is an annual interdisciplinary lecture series hosted by the Robert Koch Institute. \nEach year\, the colloquium focuses on a cutting-edge public health theme\, bringing together leading experts to present and discuss their research and insights. This year’s colloquium centres on the theme “Empowering Public Health: From Data to Global Health\,” exploring the transformative potential of digitalization\, data analytics\, and advanced technologies in addressing public health challenges worldwide. Over two days\, the colloquium showcased lectures on topics including digitalization in Public Health surveillance and microbiology as well as the use of wearable devices\, mathematical modelling and the potential of artificial intelligence in advancing systematic reviews. As the availability and complexity of health data expand\, the role of national Public Health institutes in fostering timely\, evidence-based decision-making through the application of those data becomes increasingly evident. However\, these advancements come with multifaceted challenges. The colloquium also addressed critical issues such as mitigating biases in data\, overcoming obstacles in data fusion and sharing\, and navigating the complexities of health data exchanges in a globalized world. International health initiatives rely on effective strategies for data integration and collaboration to reduce health disparities and enhance health outcomes. The closing panel discussion will focus on how these innovations shape the future of Public Health. It will examine the induced opportunities and challenges for local and global health. By exploring the intersection of advanced technologies\, data integration and Public Health\, the colloquium aims to provide a forum for knowledge exchange and thought-provoking discussions. \nLinks:\nRobert Koch Colloquium 2025
