DESCRIPTION:The Week of Deaf People / Week of the Deaf has been celebrated annually across the world during the last full week of September to recognise that deaf people have our own communities\, our own cultures\, our own languages\, sign languages\, which unite them all. \nThe United Nations (UN) General Assembly has proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf. The resolution A/RES/72/161 establishing the day acknowledges that early access to sign language and services in sign language\, including quality education available in sign language\, is vital to the growth and development of the deaf individual and critical to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. It recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us” in terms of working with deaf communities. In 2018\, it was celebrated together with the official International Day of Sign Languages\, declared by the United Nations (UN)\, for the first time. The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD)\, its national associations\, and their affiliates all over the world observe International Week of the Deaf from Monday through Sunday\, culminating in International Day of the Deaf on the final Sunday of the week. In order to commemorate International Week of the Deaf\, the WFD invites its national associations and their affiliates to center their celebrations on the theme of Human Rights through Sign Languages. With this emphasis\, deaf culture and the accomplishments of deaf people are highlighted more and are positively portrayed. Om dat te kunnen doen\, mobiliseren ze zoveel mogelijk mensen om zich te engageren als zorgvrijwilliger\, als actievoerder of als donateur. De organisatie is bekend van de gelijknamige actie Kom op tegen Kanker\, waarin het onder andere door het verkopen van plantjes geld inzamelt. DESCRIPTION:In dit Kenniscafé worden de ‘eeuwige chemicaliën’\, zoals PFAS\, en de invloed van synthetische stoffen op onze gezondheid en het ecosysteem onderzocht. \nWe leven in een wereld vol stoffen die door de mens zijn ontwikkeld\, maar die van oorsprong niet in de natuur voorkomen: denk aan plastics\, geneesmiddelen en industriële chemicaliën. Het zijn materialen die ons leven ingrijpend hebben veranderd\, maar die vaak zijn geïntroduceerd zonder dat goed bekend was hoe ze zich in het milieu zouden gedragen. Op dit moment liggen PFAS onder een vergrootglas: een groep moeilijk afbreekbare stoffen die voor allerlei doeleinden worden gebruikt. Ze zijn bijvoorbeeld ontworpen om regenkleding waterafstotend te maken en dienen als anti-aanbaklaag in pannen. Recent waarschuwde het RIVM nog voor het eten van eieren van hobbykippen vanwege te hoge PFAS-gehaltes\, die schadelijk kunnen zijn voor de gezondheid. Wat weten we van deze stoffen? Waarom zijn ze zo lastig uit onze omgeving te weren? En wat zegt dit over de manier waarop we in de toekomst met nieuwe chemische verbindingen moeten omgaan? DESCRIPTION:Patient safety is a discipline that emphasizes safety in health care through the prevention\, reduction\, reporting\, and analysis of medical error that often leads to adverse effects. \nThe frequency and magnitude of avoidable adverse events experienced by patients was not well known until the 1990s\, when multiple countries reported staggering numbers of patients harmed and killed by medical errors. Recognizing that healthcare errors impact 1 in every 10 patients around the world\, the World Health Organization calls patient safety an endemic concern. Indeed\, patient safety has emerged as a distinct healthcare discipline supported by an immature yet developing scientific framework. There is a significant transdisciplinary body of theoretical and research literature that informs the science of patient safety. No one should be harmed in health care. Yet thousands of patients across the world suffer avoidable harm\, or are put at risk of injury\, while receiving health care every single day. The 72nd World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA 72.6 ‘Global action on patient safety’ on 25 May 2019. The resolution recognizes patient safety as a global health priority and endorses the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be observed annually on 17 September. World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety. Furthermore\, the Day brings together patients\, families\, caregivers\, communities\, health workers\, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety. DESCRIPTION:Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers that starts in the mouth\, nose\, throat\, larynx\, sinuses\, or salivary glands. \nSymptoms for head and neck cancer may include a lump or sore that does not heal\, a sore throat that does not go away\, trouble swallowing\, or a change in the voice; there may also be unusual bleeding\, facial swelling\, or trouble breathing. About 75% of head and neck cancer is caused by the use of alcohol or tobacco. Other risk factors include betel quid\, certain types of human papillomavirus\, radiation exposure\, certain workplace exposures\, and Epstein-Barr virus. Head and neck cancers are most commonly of the squamous cell carcinoma type. The diagnosis is confirmed by tissue biopsy. The degree of spread may be determined by medical imaging and blood tests. Not using tobacco or alcohol can reduce the risk for head and neck cancer. While screening in the general population does not appear to be useful\, screening high risk groups by examination of the throat might be useful. \nHead and neck cancer often is curable if it is diagnosed early; however\, outcomes are typically poor if it is diagnosed late. Treatment may include a combination of surgery\, radiation therapy\, chemotherapy\, and targeted therapy. Following treatment of one head and neck cancer\, people are at higher risk of having a second cancer. In 2015\, head and neck cancers globally affected more than 5.5 million people (2.4 million mouth\, 1.7 million throat\, and 1.4 million larynx cancer)\, and it has caused over 379\,000 deaths (146\,000 mouth\, 127\,400 throat\, 105\,900 larynx cancer). Together\, they are the seventh most-frequent cancer and the ninth most-frequent cause of death from cancer. In the United States\, about 1% of people are affected at some point in their life\, and males are affected twice as often as females. The usual age at diagnosis is between 55 and 65 years old. DESCRIPTION:Sepsis is een ontstekingsreactie van het hele lichaam bij een infectie van het bloed of de lymfe. \nSoms wordt sepsis ook bloedvergiftiging genoemd\, maar die term is enigszins misleidend\, omdat sepsis niet alleen in het bloed voorkomt. Het is een ernstig ziektebeeld dat soms een dodelijke afloop heeft\, mede doordat de symptomen vaak niet specifiek zijn en soms miskend worden. Het lichaam reageert tijdens sepsis met hoge koorts\, een snelle hartslag en bloeddrukdaling. De bloeddruk kan in bepaalde gevallen zo sterk afnemen\, dat de lichaamsweefsels beschadigd raken en organen kunnen uitvallen. Meestal gaat het om een infectie door bacteriën\, maar ook andere micro-organismen zoals schimmels en virussen\, kunnen sepsis veroorzaken. Bij de meeste vormen van sepsis spelen bacteriële toxinen een belangrijke rol bij het starten en aanjagen van de ontstekingsreactie. Sepsis ontstaat vaak als complicatie van longontsteking\, urineweginfectie of wondinfectie. De aandoening werd al in de tijd van Hippocrates beschreven. Bacteriële sepsis wordt bestreden met antibiotica. Bloeddrukdalingen worden gecompenseerd door het toedienen van vocht via een infuus\, en ook bloeddrukondersteunende medicijnen zijn toepasbaar. Daarom roept 113 iedereen deze week op: ga op zoek naar woorden en start het gesprek over zelfdoding. Meer dan 500 organisaties omarmen het thema ‘Op zoek naar woorden’ en maken deze week suïcidepreventie zichtbaar. SUMMARY:Bescherm onze gezondheid: stop PFAS nu! - petitie
DESCRIPTION:PFAS – de beruchte ‘forever chemicals’ – bedreigen onze gezondheid en die van onze kinderen. \nDe landelijke politiek doet te weinig om ons te beschermen\, terwijl bijna alle Nederlanders teveel PFAS in hun bloed hebben. Ze zijn een gevaar voor de gezondheid: hopen zich op in ons lichaam\, verzwakken ons immuunsysteem en worden in verband gebracht met kanker. Deze stoffen zijn extreem slecht afbreekbaar; sommige PFAS worden zelfs helemaal niet afgebroken: ze blijven langdurig in het water\, de lucht\, en onze bodem aanwezig. We krijgen ze dus steeds weer binnen via ons eten en drinken. Wetenschappelijk bewijs over de schadelijke werking van PFAS stapelt zich op. Gemeenten\, GGD’en en artsen spreken zich uit en dringen aan op een PFAS-verbod. Ook de meeste burgers  – negen op de tien Nederlanders –  willen meer maatregelen om de PFAS-vervuiling te beperken. Dit alles staat in schril contrast met de maatregelen die de overheid neemt om de blootstelling van burgers aan PFAS terug te dringen en bedrijven die PFAS-vervuiling veroorzaken\, aan te pakken. Het resultaat: de gezondheid van mens en leefomgeving is in gevaar. Burgers worden ziek\, dragen de risico’s én de kosten. Dat is onaanvaardbaar. Daarom roepen Stichting Tegengif\, STOP PFAS STOP CHEMOURS\, Gezondheid voor Alles\, Groene Zorg Alliantie\, Bezorgde Omwonenden Dordrecht\, NMF Noord en Zuid Holland en DeGoedeZaak de Nederlandse regering op om: \n\nEen nationaal PFAS-verbod in te voeren.\nPFAS-lozingen en industriële uitstoot in lucht en water bij de bron te stoppen\, zodat ons (drink)water en onze bodem niet verder vervuild raken. En onze gezondheid niet nog meer bedreigd wordt.\nDe keten van vergunningverlening\, toezicht en handhaving te versterken\, zodat bedrijven niet ongestraft kunnen blijven lozen.\nPFAS in pesticiden\, verpakkingen en consumentenproducten te verbieden\, zoals in Frankrijk en Denemarken.\nDe vervuiler te laten betalen voor het zuiveren van door PFAS vervuild drinkwater en het schoonmaken van de bodem.\nInvesteringen in innovatie en veilige alternatieven te stimuleren\, zodat onze economie schoner en toekomstbestendig wordt.\nZich in te zetten voor een ambitieus Europees verbod\, met alleen tijdelijke uitzonderingen waar nu nog geen alternatief voor is.\n\nAndere Europese landen hebben al laten zien dat het anders kan: \n\nFrankrijk heeft een wet aangenomen die PFAS in cosmetica\, textiel en consumentenproducten vanaf 2026 verbiedt\, en breidt deze in 2030 verder uit.\nDenemarken verbood PFAS al in voedselverpakkingen en blusschuim en tientallen PFAS-houdende pesticiden.\nZweden hanteert PFAS-vrij inkoopbeleid en beschouwt hoge PFAS-waarden in bloed als ‘persoonlijk letsel’; een erkenning van de gezondheidsschade.\nVlaanderen houdt chemiebedrijf 3M verantwoordelijk voor de kosten van de grootschalige PFAS-vervuiling in de ruime omgeving van Zwijndrecht.\n\nNederland kan en moet dit voorbeeld volgen. Iedereen heeft recht op schoon water\, gezond voedsel en een veilige leefomgeving. PFAS  horen daar niet in thuis. Een PFAS-vrije wereld is een mooie wereld\, waarin kinderen gezond opgroeien en we onbezwaard groente en fruit uit eigen tuin eten – net als de eieren van onze eigen kippen. SUMMARY:Iedereen aan tegen kanker - collecteweek KWF Kankerbestrijding (Radio 2 NPO)
DESCRIPTION:Vanaf zondag 31 augustus tot en met 6 september 2025 gaan tienduizenden collectanten langs de deuren om geld in te zamelen voor KWF Kankerbestrijding. \n1 op de 2 Nederlanders krijgt ooit de diagnose kanker. De ziekte raakt ons allemaal. De opbrengst van de collecte wordt door KWF besteed aan baanbrekend kankeronderzoek en betere zorg en ondersteuning voor (ex)kankerpatiënten. De collecteweek is onderdeel van de campagne ‘Iedereen aan tegen kanker’. Tegenwoordig is de 5-jaarsoverlevingskans al 70% terwijl dat bij de oprichting van KWF in 1949 nog maar 25% was. Ook al is de overlevingskans verbeterd\, toch is er nog heel veel werk te doen. Steeds meer mensen krijgen kanker en bijna iedereen wordt er direct of indirect mee geconfronteerd. Of je het nu zelf hebt\, of iemand om wie je geeft\, kanker ontwricht je leven. Ook is de overlevingskans voor sommige kankersoorten nog steeds klein. Meer onderzoek is hard nodig om ook daar verschil te maken. De collecte is onderdeel van de landelijke campagne ‘Iedereen aan tegen kanker’. Met deze campagne wil KWF Kankerbestrijding Nederland massaal in beweging brengen om geld te doneren voor (meer) wetenschappelijk onderzoek. De campagne is door het hele land te zien en loopt tot en met 6 september. Daarnaast zet ook NPO Radio 2 zich opnieuw in voor KWF. De programmering van NPO Radio 2 staat de hele week in het teken van het vervullen van wensen van luisteraars die geraakt zijn door de ziekte. Geld doneren tijdens de collecteweek is eenvoudig. De collectanten hebben een collectebord met een QR-code die gescand kan worden met de mobiele telefoon. DESCRIPTION:Zoutmaxdag 2025: bevolking eet nog altijd te veel zout. \nIn 2025 valt de eerste Zoutmaxdag op zondag 17 augustus\, mannen in de leeftijd van 18 tot en met 50 jaar hebben dan al hun zoutlimiet voor een heel jaar bereikt. Volwassen mannen eten gemiddeld dagelijks 60% meer zout dan de richtlijn van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) aanbeveelt. Schrikbarend\, want er is nog meer dan een kwart jaar te gaan. De WHO adviseert voor volwassenen een maximum van 5\,0 gram zout per dag. In Nederland worden door de Gezondheidsraad en het Voedingscentrum een limiet van 6\,0 gram gehanteerd\, maar de WHO ziet bij een zoutlimiet van 5 gram en minder pas gezondheidsbevordering optreden. DESCRIPTION:Op Wereld Longkankerdag wordt over de hele wereld stilgestaan bij alle mensen die longkanker hebben (gehad) én hun familie en naasten. \nLongkanker heb je namelijk niet alleen. Op Longkankerdag wordt extra aandacht gevraagd voor weefselonderzoek bij longkanker. Hiermee kan de specifieke vorm van longkanker worden bepaald. Mensen willen natuurlijk graag meteen na de diagnose longkanker starten met een behandeling. Toch is het heel erg belangrijk om de uitslag van het weefselonderzoek af te wachten voordat er begonnen wordt met de behandeling. Wachten op de uitslag zorgt ervoor dat de patiënt\, samen met de arts\, de juiste behandeling kan kiezen voor de specifieke vorm van longkanker. DESCRIPTION:World Hepatitis Day\, 28 July\, is an opportunity to step up national and international efforts on hepatitis\, encourage actions and engagement by individuals\, partners and the public and highlight the need for a greater global response as outlined in the WHO’s Global hepatitis report of 2017. \nThe date of 28 July was chosen because it is the birthday of Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg\, who discovered hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus. Low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030.
