SUMMARY:#NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine - announcement 2026 (TV webcast)
DESCRIPTION:The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026 was awarded jointly to Karl Deisseroth\, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics”. \nThe Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026 is awarded for optogenetics — a method that makes it possible to show how nerve cells shape memories\, feelings and behaviours in the living brain. Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel discovered a remarkable protein\, channelrhodopsin\, in a single-celled alga. Karl Deisseroth transformed the protein into a light-controlled switch for nerve cells. The laureates have laid the foundation of a new era in neuroscience. \nLinks:\nLight-seeking algae gave us a switch for nerve cells \nHersenonderzoekers krijgen Nobelprijs voor de Geneeskunde \n‘What took them so long?’ This year’s medicine Nobel winner is overdue

SUMMARY:Wereld Cerebrale Parese Dag / #WorldCPday 2026
DESCRIPTION:Cerebrale Parese (CP) betekent letterlijk hersenverlamming\, wereldwijd gezien is CP de meest voorkomende lichamelijke aandoening bij kinderen. \nLinks:\nWorld Cerebral Palsy Day

SUMMARY:Are more young people getting cancer? - publication
DESCRIPTION:Analysis of cancers occurring before the age of 50 and explores what might be driving changes in the number of new cases. \nThe majority of cancers occur among those over the age of 50. However\, in recent years\, researchers around the world including the UK\, US\, Australia and parts of Europe have reported a shift where more cancers are being diagnosed in people under 50. These are commonly referred to as ‘early-onset’ cancers. This doesn’t mean cancer is suddenly common in young people. Age is still the most important risk factor for cancer overall. Although the average age of diagnosis for cancer overall differs by country\, the median or average age of diagnosis in developed countries is above the age of 60. Average age at diagnosis also differs by where in the body the cancer develops\, which is commonly referred to as ‘cancer site’ or ‘site-specific cancer’. At the same time\, evidence suggests that more new cases are being diagnosed among those younger than 50 for several site-specific cancers. Furthermore\, incidence rates are higher among this group now compared with those who were in the same age group in previous decades. In short\, we are seeing increasing numbers of some cancers among younger people. To understand why this might be happening\, World Cancer Research Fund International analysed how the absolute numbers of 12 site-specific cancers changed between 2000 and 2023 in the United States and the Netherlands\, and 2021 and 2023 in England among those under 50 years of age. For each country\, we also explored incidence rates for the first and last years – 2000 and 2023 for the US and Netherlands and 2001 and 2023 for England – for each site-specific cancer. Finally\, we reviewed the published evidence related to what might be driving changes in the number of cases of cancer in the last few decades. \nLinks:\nAre more young people getting cancer? \nEarly-onset cancer data

SUMMARY:Disease Outbreak : News Pneumonia of undetermined etiology : Russian Federation - publication
DESCRIPTION:On 2 October 2026\, WHO became aware through media reports of the death of an employee of the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute (APRI) of Siberia and the Far East\, the Russian Federation. \nAccording to these reports\, the individual died on 2 October following hospitalization for severe pneumonia on 29 September\, and pneumonic plague was suspected as the cause of death\, following occupational exposure in laboratory settings. Following requests for verification from WHO\, the National Focal Point for the International Health Regulations (2005) (NFP) of the Russian Federation confirmed the death and informed WHO that no case of plague had been registered recently in Irkutsk Oblast\, that preventive and control measures had been implemented in accordance with national sanitary legislation\, and that the laboratory testing of contacts detected no high-threat pathogens. The authorities also reported that no biosecurity incidents had occurred in the laboratory\, contrary to reports in the media\, and that there were no further case of severe pneumonia linked to this case. The NFP informed WHO that the case and all contacts had been tested for a range of microorganisms\, including high-threat pathogens. Test results were negative for the tested high-threat pathogens. All contacts had been medically followed up in healthcare facilities or at home\, and all remained asymptomatic throughout. Quarantine measures were instituted in the hospital where the patient was being treated. Based on the information provided by NFP\, WHO has not identified evidence of ongoing transmission associated with this event. A key uncertainty remains the absence of a confirmed diagnosis in the deceased laboratory worker. WHO will continue to monitor the situation and assess any potential public health implications as further information becomes available. \nLinks:\nDisease Outbreak : News Pneumonia of undetermined etiology : Russian Federation \nRospotrebnadzor: a full range of preventive measures has been completed in Irkutsk \nShelekhovsky District official website\, Extraordinary meeting of the Regional Sanitary and Anti-Epidemic Commission \nIrkutsk region Governor \nIrkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and Far East \nWorld Health Organization (2020). SUMMARY:#RMDreams World Arthritis Day 2026
\nLinks:\nWorld Arthritis Day 2026

SUMMARY:Van der Leeuw-lezing : Book and Flesh
DESCRIPTION:An insight into reading through the body. \nLinks:\nVan der Leeuw-lezing : Book and Flesh \n44e Van der Leeuw-lezing
