DESCRIPTION:Elk jaar wordt op 4 december de Dag van de Preventie van Chemische Rampen georganiseerd om het belang van chemische veiligheid te benadrukken. \nDe Dag van de Preventie van Chemische Rampen is een rechtstreeks gevolg van de industriële ramp in Bhopal die op 3 december 1984 plaats vond. Uit de fabrieken van Union Carbide India Limited ontsnapte op die dag per ongeluk ongeveer 40 ton methylisocyanaat (MIC). Dit goedje veroorzaakt ernstige irritatie aan de luchtwegen (longoedeem)\, huid- en ogen. Maar veroorzaakte in Bhopal ook een toename van het aantal doodgeborenen\, spontane abortussen en verhoogde kindersterfte. SUMMARY:Wereld Anti-Pesticiden Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:Het Pesticide Action Network International (PAN) riep de “No Pesticides Use Day” in 1988 in het leven om de industriële ramp in Bhopal\, India te herdenken\, sinds 2010 werd tijdens de bijeenkomst van de Pesticides Task Force besloten om de dag uit te breiden naar een hele week\, de campagne No Pesticides Use Week (NPUW) begint op 3 december en eindigt op 10 december. \nIn 1984 explodeerde op 3 december een bestrijdingsmiddelenfabriek van Union Carbide in Bhopal. Als gevolg van de enorme gaslek vielen er doden en gewonden en nog steeds worden er als gevolg van de ramp misvormde kinderen in het gebied geboren. Op Wereld Anti-Pesticiden Dag staan we stil bij de invloed van bestrijdingsmiddelen op mens en milieu. Wereldwijd worden pesticiden gebruikt\, bijvoorbeeld om groenten en fruit te beschermen tegen ongedierte. Hierdoor wordt dit voedsel vervuild met hormoonontregelende bestrijdingsmiddelen\, een rapport van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie en het VN-Milieuprogramma liet in 2013 al zien dat er een toename is van hormoongerelateerde ziektes onder mens en dier. Als je deze middelen wilt mijden\, kun je de pesticideneetwijzer van PAN-NL raadplegen. SUMMARY:Wereld AIDS dag / World AIDS day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Wereldaidsdag is een jaarlijks terugkerend wereldwijd evenement op 1 december\, dat gewijd is aan de bewustwording omtrent aids. \nWereldaidsdag werd in augustus 1987 bedacht door James W. Bunn en Thomas Netter\, beide werkzaam als voorlichter bij de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie in Genève\, Zwitserland. Bunn en Netter legden hun idee voor aan Dr. Jonathan Mann\, directeur van het Global Programme on AIDS (nu bekend als UNAIDS van de Verenigde Naties). Het concept werd goedgekeurd en op 1 december 1988 vond de eerste Wereldaidsdag plaats. Het doel van Wereldaidsdag is om wereldwijd aandacht te vragen voor de aidsproblematiek en op te roepen tot solidariteit met mensen met hiv en aids. Wereldwijd vinden er vele initiatieven plaats zoals evenementen\, congressen en acties. In Nederland organiseert de non-profitorganisatie Aidsfonds (voorheen Aids Fonds en STOP AIDS NOW!) Wereldaidsdag met onder andere een congres en een campagne. In België vraagt Sensoa aandacht voor de aidsbestrijding. Op Wereldaidsdag wordt opgeroepen het rode lintje op te spelden\, het symbool voor solidariteit met mensen met hiv. Wereldaidsdag heeft elk jaar een thema. Dat verwijst naar het streefdoel van nul nieuwe besmettingen met hiv\, nul doden aan de gevolgen van aids en nul gevallen van discriminatie van mensen met hiv en aids. DESCRIPTION:Op 30 november 2025 vindt het PAIS Protest plaats: de allereerste landelijke demonstratie voor een betere omgang met Post Acute Infectieuze Syndromen\, zoals Long Covid\, Q-koorts\, Lyme\, Post Sepsis en ME. \nIn Nederland leven honderdduizenden mensen met ernstige\, langdurige klachten na een infectie.\nZe verdwijnen niet plotseling\, maar raken geleidelijk uit het zicht. Volwassenen en kinderen die niet\nmeer kunnen werken\, studeren of zelfs hun huis uitkomen. Velen brengen hun dagen door in bed\,\nin stilte en duisternis. Deze mensen hebben PAIS\, het Post Acuut Infectieus Syndroom. Daaronder vallen ziekten als ME\, Q-koorts\, chronische Lyme\, Post Sepsis en Long Covid. De patiëntengroep is groot\, groeit dagelijks en iedereen kan er een onderdeel van worden. Het lijden van patiënten en hun naasten is groot en ook de samenleving als geheel wordt enorm geraakt door het wegvallen van zoveel mensen. Toch ontbreekt het aan structureel en passend beleid. DESCRIPTION:Sinds 2023 volgt het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) de mondgezondheid in opdracht van het ministerie van Ministerie van Volksgezondheid\, Welzijn en Sport (VWS) omdat er nog geen structurele informatie over mondgezondheid in Nederland was. \nDe meeste Nederlanders (76 procent) poetsen hun tanden minimaal twee keer per dag. 22 procent poetst één keer per dag\, en twee procent poetst niet dagelijks. Dat blijkt uit cijfers van de Monitor Mondgezondheid 2025 van het RIVM. Hoe vaak mensen tandenpoetsen en schoonmaken tussen de tanden en kiezen hangt samen met het bezoek aan de tandarts of mondhygiënist. Mensen die aangaven twee keer per dag of vaker hun tanden te poetsen gaan vaker naar de mondzorgverlener dan mensen die één keer per dag poetsen of die dat niet elke dag doen. Dit onderzoek laat onder meer zien dat mensen met een hoger inkomen en mensen met een hbo (hoger beroepsonderwijs)– of wo-opleiding vaker een (zeer) goede mondgezondheid ervaren dan mensen met een lager inkomen of mensen met basisonderwijs\, een vmbo – of mbo (middelbaar beroepsonderwijs) 1-opleiding. Ook hebben zij vaker twintig of meer tanden en kiezen\, minder vaak een kunstgebit en gaan ze vaker naar de mondzorgverlener. Mensen met een lager inkomen gaven vaker aan dat zij niet naar de mondzorgverlener zijn geweest omdat ze het te duur vonden. Het Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau waarschuwde in februari 2025 het kabinet al dat structurele ongelijkheid het welzijn en de gezondheid beïnvloedt. DESCRIPTION:Recognizing that the case of conjoined twins is a rare condition where the estimated incidence can be 1 in 50\,000 births\, the General Assembly decided to proclaim 24 November as World Conjoined Twins Day. \nThe Assembly emphasized the need to address the condition of conjoined twins\, by raising awareness of their cases at all levels and through a life-course approach\, in cooperation with relevant United Nations agencies and other stakeholders\, as well as by advocating for their well-being and social inclusion\, while taking into account relevant agreed international standards\, norms and principles. Conjoined fetuses are a rare type of identical twins that share a placenta and an amniotic sac\, when the embryo divides at 13-15 days from conception. The incidence ranges from 1/50\,000-1/100\,000 live births. Female fetuses are more commonly affected\, as the ratio of female to male is 3:1. No association with maternal age\, race\, parity\, or heredity has been observed\, and the recurrence risk is negligible. Reaffirming the right of every human being\, without distinction of any kind\, to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health\, the United Nations is committed to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages\, including by strengthening health systems and achieving universal health coverage and all other health-related targets and leaving no one behind. There is the need to scale up efforts to build and strengthen quality\, people-centred\, sustainable and resilient health systems\, and to promote strong global partnerships with all relevant stakeholders to collaboratively support the efforts of Member States\, as appropriate\, to achieve universal health coverage and other health-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. In this sense\, the United Nations strives to strengthen regional and international cooperation\, multilateralism\, global solidarity\, coordination and health governance\, towards the progressive realization of the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for all\, without distinction of any kind. \nLinks:\nWorld Conjoined Twins Day

DESCRIPTION:Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is an event in which survivors of suicide loss come together to find connection\, understanding\, and hope through their shared experience. \nIn 1999\, Senator Harry Reid\, who lost his father to suicide\, introduced a resolution to the United States Senate\, leading to the creation of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Also known as Survivor Day\, the day was designated by the United States Congress as a day on which those affected by suicide can join together for healing and support. It was determined that Survivor Day would always fall on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving\, as the holidays are often a difficult time for suicide loss survivors. Each year\, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention supports hundreds of large and small Survivor Day events around the world. In addition to sponsoring in-person events across the globe for International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day\, AFSP hosts two virtual events for survivors of suicide loss\, Survivor Day Live and Día De Esperanza. Survivor Day Live takes place on the Saturday of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. The event features a panel discussion featuring suicide loss survivors’ experiences and healing journeys. Día de Esperanza/Day of Hope takes place on the day before International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. DESCRIPTION:World Toilet Day (WTD) is an United Nations international observance day on 19 November to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. \nWorldwide\, 3.47 billion people live without “safely managed sanitation” and around 419 million people practice open defecation. Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”. In particular\, target 6.2 is to “End open defecation and provide access to sanitation and hygiene”. When the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020 was published\, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said\, “Today\, Sustainable Development Goal 6 is badly off track” and it “is hindering progress on the 2030 Agenda\, the realization of human rights and the achievement of peace and security around the world”. WTD exists to inform\, engage and inspire people to take action toward achieving this goal. The UN General Assembly declared World Toilet Day an official UN day in 2013\, after Singapore had tabled the resolution (its first resolution before the UN’s General Assembly of 193 member states). Prior to that\, World Toilet Day had been established unofficially by the World Toilet Organization (a Singapore-based NGO) in 2001. UN-Water is the official convener of World Toilet Day. UN-Water maintains the official World Toilet Day website and chooses a special theme for each year. WTD is marked by communications campaigns and other activities. Events are planned by UN entities\, international organizations\, local civil society organizations and volunteers to raise awareness and inspire action. Toilets are important because access to a safe functioning toilet has a positive impact on public health\, human dignity\, and personal safety\, especially for females. Sanitation systems that do not safely treat excreta (urine and feces) allow for the spread of disease. Serious soil-transmitted diseases and waterborne diseases such as cholera\, diarrhea\, typhoid\, dysentery and schistosomiasis can result. World Toilet Day is about inspiring action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. World Toilet Day is celebrated on 19th November every year. As a result of drug resistance\, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat\, increasing the risk of disease spread\, severe illness and death. The World AMR Awareness Week is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. \nThe theme for WAAW 2025 is “Act Now: Protect Our Present\, Secure Our Future.” This theme underscores the urgent need to take bold\, united action to address AMR. AMR is already harming our health\, food systems\, environment and economies. It’s not a future challenge. It is happening now. Drug-resistant infections are increasing\, yet awareness\, investment and action are still falling short. Building on the momentum of the 2024 United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on AMR\, this call to action urges all stakeholders\, including governments\, civil society\, health-care providers\, veterinarians\, farmers\, environmental actors and the public to translate the political commitments into tangible\, accountable\, life-saving interventions. The COP may establish such subsidiary bodies as are necessary to achieve the objective of the Convention\, such as the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body on a Protocol on Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. The COP also may establish working groups or expert groups with the mandate to elaborate guidelines and recommendations for the implementation of different treaty provisions. The Meeting of the Parties (MOP) is the governing body of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. The work of the MOP is governed by its Rules of Procedure and keeps under regular review the implementation of the Protocol and takes the decisions necessary to promote its effective implementation. The MOP may establish working groups or expert groups with the mandate to elaborate guidelines and recommendations for the implementation of different protocol provisions. To this end\, the first session of the MOP established a working group on the tracking and tracing system following article 8\, and a second one on assistance and cooperation following articles 12\, 21\, 23\, 24\, 28 and 29. Dat kán anders\, bewijzen miljoenen agro-ecologisch boeren die samen voldoende voedsel produceren om de wereld te voeden. In Enkhuizen zijn naast elkaar drie bedrijven gevestigd die ‘leven’ van landbouwgif. Die worden op 14 november 2025 ter verantwoording geroepen. Bayer en Syngenta behoren tot de grootste gifproducenten. Hun gezamenlijke omzet is zo’n € 36 miljard (2024). Naast ‘legaal’ landbouwgif produceren ze ook middelen die in de Europese Unie allang verboden zijn. Die worden geëxporteerd\, veelal naar het mondiale zuiden\, en vormen een groot gevaar voor de lokale bevolking. En: wij importeren voedsel uit veel van de landen die dit landbouwgif kopen en gebruiken… Incotec\, dat zaden van een coating voorziet zodat ze makkelijker te planten zijn\, stopt ook landbouwgif in die coatings. DESCRIPTION:Operating Room Nurse Day is is celebrated annually on November 14 and was created to celebrate nurses who provide care to patients before\, during and after surgery\, as well as support and assist surgeons. \nOperating room nurses\, also known as OR nurses\, perioperative nurses\, surgical nurses\, or theatre nurses\, are nurses that specialize in providing care to surgical patients. They are an essential part of the perioperative surgical team and work alongside surgeons\, anesthesiologists\, certified registered nurse anesthetists\, and surgical technicians. Any surgery has three main phases\, known collectively as the perioperative period: the preoperative phase\, the intraoperative phase\, and the postoperative phase. Surgical nurses support patients at each of these stages\, so even though they are often referred to as operating room nurses\, their activities aren’t restricted to the operating room. In some countries\, perioperative nurses can focus on performing specific roles\, such as circulating nurses\, instrument nurses (also known as scrub nurses)\, registered nurse first assistants (RNFA)\, and perianaesthesia nurses (or recovery nurses). OR nurses need to be tidy and organized\, have attention to detail\, be able to anticipate surgeons’ needs and show initiative when appropriate\, and\, of course\, have a good bedside manner and interpersonal skills. And\, naturally\, they need to be properly educated; people who want to become OR nurses usually specialize in surgical nursing while attending nursing school and are often required to pass certification exams before being allowed to work in the operating room. \nIt is usually surgeons and anesthesiologists who get all or most of the credit for successful surgeries\, whereas the contribution of operating room nurses is often overlooked. However\, their work throughout all stages of the perioperative period is immensely important and requires skill and expertise. Yes\, it is surgeons who save patients’ lives\, but it is OR nurses who are at their side every step of the way\, supporting and taking care. Operating Room Nurse Day was created to highlight the importance of OR nurses and celebrate everything they do for their patients and fellow healthcare professionals. It was first proclaimed in 1989 by Terry Branstad\, the then Governor of Iowa. Although this professional observance has no official nationwide recognition\, OR Nurse Day has been celebrated by the professional community ever since its inception. Celebrate Operating Room Nurse Day by thanking surgical nurses you know for their hard work. Na het aannemen van een resolutie over diabetes door de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties op 20 december 2006 (door alle 192 VN-lidstaten) werd Wereld Diabetesdag een internationale VN-dag en worden de lidstaten via de Resolutie aangemoedigd om beleidsplannen te ontwikkelen voor preventie\, behandeling en zorg op het gebied van diabetes. Jaarlijks wordt een wereldwijd thema uitgekozen\, dat door organisaties en/of bedrijven op landelijk of lokaal niveau verder kan worden uitgewerkt. DESCRIPTION:World Pneumonia Day (12 November) provides an annual forum for the world in the fight against pneumonia\, more than 100 organizations representing the interests of children joined forces as the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia to hold the first World Pneumonia Day on 12 November 2009. \nThe fight to reduce deaths from the single\, biggest infectious killer of adults and children has never been more urgent. In 2023\, pneumonia claimed the lives of 2.5 million\, including 610\,000 children under five\, according to the Global Burden of Disease. With aging populations\, urbanization\, and air pollution increasing the burden of respiratory infections\, and the risk of another COVID-like pandemic high\, there is a pneumonia crisis across the life course killing millions now and placing many more at risk of death when the next pandemic strikes. Tragically\, it is the very young and the very old who are at greatest risk. Children living in areas with low vaccination rates and malnutrition\, and in homes that use polluting fuels for cooking and heating\, are particularly vulnerable. Sixty percent of all child pneumonia deaths are attributable to malnutrition. Older adults exposed to outdoor air pollution – most significantly from burning fossil fuels – and smoking are also at risk. More than one in four pneumonia deaths among adults aged over 70 are attributable to air pollution and smoking. To focus the world’s attention on vital issues\, each year Every Breath Counts Coalition members vote on a theme. Child Survival is the theme for World Pneumonia Day 2025 in recognition that pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of child death. In Nederland is dyscalculie een erkende leerstoornis die grote gevolgen kan hebben voor het leren\, het zelfbeeld en de toekomstkansen van een kind. Toch wordt een dyscalculieonderzoek – in tegenstelling tot dyslexieonderzoek – niet vergoed door de overheid. Dit leidt tot schrijnende kansenongelijkheid: alleen kinderen van ouders die een bedrag van €600 tot €1000 kunnen betalen\, krijgen de juiste diagnose en passende begeleiding. Dit moet veranderen. Vaak wordt alvleesklierkanker pas ontdekt wanneer er al uitzaaiingen zijn. Als je de diagnose alvleesklierkanker krijgt is dat min of meer een doodvonnis. De overlevingskans is klein bij deze vorm van kanker. DESCRIPTION:Movember (een porte-manteau van het Engelse woord ‘moustache’ (snor) en ‘november’) is een jaarlijks terugkerend evenement om aandacht te vragen voor prostaatkanker\, teelbalkanker en de gezondheid van de man meer in het algemeen. \nDoor mannen en vrouwen (Mo Bros en Mo Sistas) aan te moedigen om mee te doen streeft de stichting er naar om de vroege opsporing van kanker\, diagnose en effectieve behandelingen\, en uiteindelijk een vermindering van het aantal vermijdbare sterfgevallen te realiseren. Naast het ondergaan van een jaarlijkse controle stimuleert de stichting mensen zich bewust te zijn van mogelijke familiegeschiedenis van kanker en om een gezondere levensstijl aan te nemen. De Movember Foundation financiert ruim 800 onderzoeksprojecten over de hele wereld. Het Wereldwijd Wetenschappelijk Comité (GSC) komt jaarlijks bijeen om ontwikkelingen in het kankeronderzoek te bespreken en te bepalen waar het beschikbare geld heen gaat. DESCRIPTION:PFAS in snoepgroenten voor kinderen\, maar ook opmerkelijk veel snoepgroenten pesticidenvrij. \nIn een steekproef met snoepgroenten van Pesticide Action Network Netherlands (PAN-NL)\, gepubliceerd in het rapport ‘Pesticiden in snoepgroente : Kinderen door supermarkten niet gespaard‘\, zijn 8 pesticiden gevonden waaronder meerdere PFAS-pesticiden en pesticiden die hormoonverstorend zijn. Als de pesticidenresten in potjes peutervoeding zouden zijn gevonden dan hadden 4 van de 20 geteste snoepgroenten uit de handel genomen moeten worden. DESCRIPTION:Wereld Psoriasis Dag is een jaarlijkse Dag die ieder jaar op 29 oktober wordt gehouden\, de International Federation of Psoriasis Association (IFPA) gebruikt deze datum om wereldwijd aandacht te vragen voor deze ziekte\, die op arthritis lijkt. \nDe Dag geeft “een internationaal gezicht aan de 125 miljoen mensen wereldwijd die lijden aan psoriasis of psoriasistische arthritis”. Psoriasis\, zilverschub of schub(ben)ziekte (psoriasis vulgaris) is een veelvoorkomende niet besmettelijke\, erfelijke\, chronische auto-immuunziekte\, gekenmerkt door een versnelde deling (proliferatie) en verminderde rijping (differentiatie) van hoorncellen in de opperhuid. Omdat de cellen niet normaal uitrijpen is ook het afschilferen verstoord\, waardoor lokaal sterke nieuwe aanmaak van huidcellen met schubbige schilfervorming op de aangedane plaatsen plaatsvindt. Hoewel psoriasis vooral tot uiting komt in de huid\, is het niet primair een huidprobleem\, maar een ontregeling van het immuunsysteem (auto-immuunziekte). Periodes van vermindering van de symptomen worden vaak afgewisseld met periodes waarin de ziekte verergert. De aangedane huid van een psoriasispatiënt vernieuwt zich in 6 à 7 dagen; bij niet-patiënten is dit 26 à 27 dagen. De structuur van de zich vernieuwende huidlagen wijkt echter belangrijk af van normaal. Psoriasis is niet besmettelijk. Ongeveer 2% van de wereldbevolking heeft de aandoening\, alleen bij de Zuid-Amerikaanse inheemse bevolking is ze veel zeldzamer. De hoogste incidentie wordt gevonden in Scandinavië en Noord-Europa (3%). Vaak bestaat er bij personen met psoriasis een genetische aanleg voor het optreden van een versnelde huiddeling. Het onderzoek hiernaar richt zich vooral op loci op de chromosomen 17q\, 4q\, 1q\, 6p21.3 en het Psors 1 gen. De ernst van de aandoening varieert sterk. Sommigen hebben slechts enkele psoriasisplekken\, anderen zitten van top tot teen onder. Soms is er ook jeuk. Mannen worden wat vaker door deze aandoening getroffen dan vrouwen\, en 75% van de patiënten vertoont de eerste verschijnselen vóór het 40e levensjaar. DESCRIPTION:Jaarlijks evenement op 29 oktober om aandacht te vragen voor (de gevolgen van) cerebrovasculair accident (CVA)\, in de volksmond beter bekend als beroerte en attaque\, een acute medische aandoening waarbij er een plotselinge verstoring van de doorbloeding van de hersenen plaatsvindt. \nEr zijn twee hoofdtypen CVA: ischemisch CVA\, waarbij een bloedvat wordt afgesloten en de doorbloeding wordt gestaakt\, en hemorragisch CVA\, waarbij een bloeding plaatsvindt. Het uiteindelijke resultaat van beide typen is dat de hersenen niet goed meer functioneren. Een CVA kan worden gekenmerkt door verschillende symptomen\, waaronder gevoelsverlies en/of verlamming in één lichaamshelft\, moeite met het begrijpen of produceren van taal\, een draaierig gevoel\, of halfzijdig zichtverlies. De symptomen treden vaak kort na de beroerte op. Als deze minder dan één à twee uur duren\, spreekt men van een “transient ischemic attack” (TIA) of mini-beroerte. De belangrijkste risicofactor voor CVA is hoge bloeddruk. Andere factoren die de kans op een CVA vergroten\, zijn roken\, obesitas\, een te hoog cholesterolgehalte\, diabetes mellitus\, een geschiedenis met TIA’s en boezemfibrilleren. DESCRIPTION:Wereld Spina Bifida (Open Rug) en Hydrocefalus Dag is een jaarlijks op 25 oktober terugkerend evenement om bewustzijn te kweken rond Spina Bifida en Hydrocefalus en aandacht te vragen voor de rechten van mensen die met deze aandoeningen zijn geboren. \nSpina Bifida:\nEen open rug\, ook bekend met de medische term spina bifida\, is een ingewikkelde aandoening aan de neurale buis die ontstaat tijdens de embryonale ontwikkeling. Dit wordt een neuralebuisdefect genoemd. Anencefalie is een minder bekend voorbeeld van een neuralebuisdefect. Bij spina bifida sluiten de ruggenwervels niet goed rondom het ruggenmerg. Het komt voor bij 4\,5 op de 10.000 geboorten. Als eenmaal een kind is geboren met spina bifida\, of als een van de ouders spina bifida heeft\, dan is er een kans van 4% dat het eerstvolgende kind eveneens spina bifida heeft. Als ouders reeds twee kinderen met spina bifida hebben\, is de kans op een derde kind met deze aandoening 10%. In Zuidoost-Azië komt de afwijking minder vaak voor (2\,5 op de 10.000 geboorten). De benaming spina bifida is gegeven door de Nederlander Nicolaes Tulp in 1637 \nHydrocefalus:\nHydrocefalus\, ook wel waterhoofd\, is een aandoening waarbij in de ventrikels te veel hersenvocht aanwezig is en de ventrikels vergroot zijn. De overmaat aan hersenvocht oefent druk uit op de hersenen\, waardoor hersenfuncties kunnen worden aangetast. Volwassenen kunnen hierdoor last krijgen van hoofdpijn\, migraine\, dubbelzicht\, verminderd evenwicht\, incontinentie\, problemen met lopen\, persoonlijkheidsveranderingen of mentale retardatie. Bij baby’s kan de omvang van de schedel sterk toenemen. Overige symptomen die gepaard gaan met hydrocefalus zijn braken\, slaperigheid\, insulten en zinking van de ogen. Hydrocefalus kan aangeboren zijn\, maar het is ook mogelijk een hydrocefalus op te lopen. Onder de aangeboren afwijkingen die hydrocefalus kunnen veroorzaken\, vallen onder andere neuralebuisdefecten en vernauwing van het aquaduct van Sylvius. Ongeveer 1 à 2 op de 1.000 nieuwgeboren baby’s krijgt een waterhoofd. Hydrocefalus kan ook ontstaan als gevolg van hersenvliesontsteking\, hersentumoren\, traumatisch hersenletsel\, intraventriculaire bloedingen en subarachnoïdale bloedingen. Er bestaan drie soorten hydrocefalus: communicerend\, niet-communicerend en normaledrukhydrocefalie.
