DESCRIPTION:Ultra-processed food (UPF) now dominate the global food supply and are strongly associated with risks for heart disease\, cancers\, metabolic disease\, diabetes\, and obesity. \nThe study ‘From Tobacco to Ultraprocessed Food: How Industry Engineering Fuels the Epidemic of Preventable Disease‘ by researchers at three United States universities claims to have identified similarities between the addictive characteristics of UPFs and cigarettes\, and has recommended similar levels of regulation. UPFs are likely associated with rates of neurologic issues such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease and predict premature death. Drawing on the history of tobacco regulation\, the study examines how the design\, marketing\, and distribution of UPFs mirror those of industrial tobacco products. Such information speaks to the sophistication and aims of food product manipulation and its consequences. This review synthesizes findings from addiction science\, nutrition\, and public health history to identify structural and sensory features that increase the reinforcing potential of both cigarettes and UPFs. We focus on five key areas: dose optimization\, delivery speed\, hedonic engineering\, environmental ubiquity\, and deceptive reformulation. Cigarettes and UPFs are not simply natural products but highly engineered delivery systems designed specifically to maximize biological and psychological reinforcement and habitual overuse. Both industries have used similar strategies to increase product appeal\, evade regulation\, and shape public perception\, including adding sensory additives\, accelerating reward delivery\, expanding contextual access\, and deploying health-washing claims. These design features collectively hijack human biology\, undermine individual agency\, and contribute heavily to disease and health care costs. UPFs should be evaluated not only through a nutritional lens but also as addictive\, industrially engineered substances. Lessons from tobacco regulation\, including litigation\, marketing restrictions\, and structural interventions\, offer a roadmap for reducing UPF-related harm. DESCRIPTION:Het syndroom van Alagille (Alagille syndrome)\, genoemd naar Daniel Alagille\, is een complexe aandoening van een aantal orgaansystemen\, voornamelijk de lever\, het hart\, de ogen\, het gelaat en het skelet. \nDe belangrijkste symptomen zijn die van cholestase (gepaard gaand met jeuk en geelzucht)\, herkenbaar aan weinig galwegen in een leverbiopt; aangeboren hartafwijkingen\, vooral van de longarterieën\, oogafwijkingen\, een typische gelaatsvorm\, en ‘vlinderwervels’. Nierafwijkingen en afwijkingen aan het centraal zenuwstelsel komen ook voor. De mortaliteit is ongeveer 10% waarbij vaatproblemen in het centraal zenuwstelsel\, hartziekte en leverziekte de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken zijn. De verschijnselen zijn ook binnen 1 familie zeer variabel. De ziekte is autosomaal dominant erfelijk. Nieuwe mutaties (sporadische gevallen) komen frequent voor. Als bekend is wat de aard van de afwijking in een familie is\, is prenatale diagnostiek in principe mogelijk. Genetisch onderzoek louter om de diagnose te verifiëren bij iemand die aan de klinische criteria voldoet\, heeft geen consequenties en wordt nog niet aanbevolen. Nog niet volledig opgehelderd. Bij ca 70% van de patiënten zijn afwijkingen in een gen genaamd JAG1 aantoonbaar. Het gen ligt op chromosoom 20\, locatie 20p12. Het codeert voor een eiwit\, Jagged 1\, dat op de celmembraan van sommige cellen wordt gevonden en dat een functie heeft bij signaaluitwisseling tussen cellen zowel tijdens de embryonale ontwikkeling als daarna. DESCRIPTION:Risk ratios of Parkinson’s disease by neighbourhood in the Netherlands (2017–2022)\, klik op afbeelding voor origineel\nParkinson’s disease (PD) is a growing public health concern with a largely unknown aetiology. \nUnderstanding temporal trends\, demographic drivers\, and regional variations in PD risk is critical for guiding healthcare planning and identifying potential environmental and socioeconomic risk factors. The researchers aimed to investigate the incidence and spatial distribution of PD in the Netherlands from 2017 to 2022\, and examined demographic and socioeconomic disparities in PD risk. They conducted a nationwide\, population-based study leveraging complementary strengths of multiple independent administrative health records linked to demographic and socioeconomic data. Incident PD cases were identified using a newly developed algorithm integrating mortality records\, hospital data\, health insurance claims\, and medication prescriptions. The writers of the report ‘Incidence and spatial variation of Parkinson’s disease in the Netherlands (2017–2022): a population-based study‘ estimated overall and stratified age- and sex-internally standardized PD incidence rates (IRs). Spatial variations in PD risk were assessed using Bayesian hierarchical models to generate smoothed relative risk estimates at a fine-grained neighbourhood level. Between 2017 and 2022\, we identified 22\,343 incident PD cases in a population of 19\,995\,771 individuals (totalling 105\,027\,472 person-years at risk). Overall standardized IR was relatively stable across the evaluated time at 21.8 (95% confidence interval (CI): 21.6–22.1) per 100\,000 person-years at risk. Incidence increased with age (peaking at 75–85 years) and was higher in men than women\, in individuals with higher socioeconomic position\, and residents of the northern provinces. Spatial analysis revealed significant geographic clustering of PD risk\, which did not ecologically align with major environmental indicators such as air pollution\, agricultural activity\, or urbanization. The multifaceted algorithm offers a robust PD case ascertainment tool that allowed for a comprehensive nationwide assessment of PD incidence. Hierdoor is de introverte mens gevoeliger voor verslavende middelen of drugsmisbruik en pleegt ze vaker zelfmoord dan de extroverte. Laten alle extraverte mensen eens stil staan bij de dagelijkse worsteling die de introverte mens doormaakt. Zet eens een stap opzij en laat de introverte uit je schaduw stappen. Kijk eens naar hem of haar in plaats van er langs te kijken. DESCRIPTION:As exemplified by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic major infectious diseases and epidemics have devastating impacts on human lives\, wreaking havoc on long-term social and economic development. \nGlobal health crises threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems\, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people\, including women and children\, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries. There is an urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems\, reaching those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations. In the event of the absence of international attention\, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and gravity. There is great need of raising awareness\, the exchange of information\, scientific knowledge and best practices\, quality education\, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at the local\, national\, regional and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics. It is important to strengthen epidemic prevention by applying lessons learned on epidemic management and how to prevent the stoppage of basic services\, and to raise the level of preparedness in order to have the earliest and most adequate response to any epidemic that may arise\, and recognizing also the value of an integrated One Health approach that fosters integration of human health\, animal health and plant health\, as well as environmental and other relevant sectors. International cooperation and multilateralism play an important role in the response to epidemics. \nWe need to stress the significance of partnership and solidarity among every individual\, community and State\, and regional and international organizations\, in all stages of epidemic management\, as well as the importance of considering a gender perspective in this regard. The United Nations system\, in particular the World Health Organization\, plays a pivotal role in coordinating responses to epidemics\, in accordance with its mandate\, and in supporting national\, regional and international efforts to prevent\, mitigate and address the impacts of infectious diseases and epidemics in accordance with the goal of advancing the 2030 Agenda. We need to recognize the primary role and responsibility of Governments and the indispensable contribution of relevant stakeholders in tackling global health challenges\, especially women\, who make up the majority of the world’s health workers. UN member states commit to ensure inclusive\, equal and non-discriminatory participation\, with special attention to those\, who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations with the highest chance of epidemic infection. The UN General Assembly invites all Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other global\, regional and subregional organizations\, the private sector and civil society\, including non-governmental organizations\, academic institutions\, individuals and other relevant stakeholders to observe the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness annually in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national contexts and priorities\, through education and awareness-raising activities\, in order to highlight the importance of the prevention of\, preparedness for and partnership against epidemics. \nLinks:\nDay of Epidemic Preparedness

De dj’s draaien dag en nacht verzoeknummers voor luisteraars\, in ruil voor een donatie. Tijdens de eerste drie edities stond het Glazen Huis in Utrecht\, sinds 2007 wisselt de locatie. DESCRIPTION:Het RIVM deed het onderzoek ‘Resistente schimmelinfecties door het gebruik van dezelfde antischimmelstoffen bij mensen en landbouwgewassen‘ in opdracht van het ministerie van Landbouw\, Visserij\, Voedselzekerheid en Natuur (LVVN). \nMensen kunnen ziek worden van schimmels\, zoals Aspergillus fumigatus en Candida maar de stoffen in medicijnen tegen deze schimmels werken steeds vaker minder goed (resistentie)\, waardoor mensen met deze schimmelinfecties moeilijker zijn te behandelen. Een schimmelinfectie is vaak onschuldig maar kan ook levensbedreigend zijn. Vooral bij mensen met een zwak immuunsysteem\, zoals bij kanker\, aids of mensen met een donororgaan. Bepaalde stoffen tegen schimmels (vooral azolen) worden niet alleen als medicijn voor mensen gebruikt\, maar ook door landbouwbedrijven om schimmelziekten bij hun gewassen te voorkomen. Bekend is dat schimmels op gewassen resistent kunnen worden door dit gebruik. Schimmels die resistent zijn geworden in deze omgeving\, zijn daarna ook ongevoelig voor vergelijkbare medicijnen bij mensen (kruisresistentie). Kruisresistentie voor azolen is al aangetoond bij de schimmel Aspergillus fumigatus. Een infectie met deze schimmel is hierdoor bij mensen moeilijker te behandelen. En dat terwijl azolen hiervoor veel worden gebruikt. Dat gebeurt omdat ze vaak beter werken dan andere medicijnen. Ook kunnen ze in de vorm van een pil worden toegediend en is geen infuus nodig. Volgens het RIVM zijn er aanwijzingen dat kruisresistentie ook kan optreden bij verschillende soorten Candida. Zo zijn er resistente Candida’s in het milieu gevonden. Verder blijkt er een kans te zijn dat ook nieuwe soorten antischimmelstoffen zowel in de landbouw als voor mensen kunnen worden gebruikt\, wat ook weer tot kruisresistentie bij schimmels kan leiden. Denk aan zogeheten orotomiden en oxazolen. Het is dus belangrijk te voorkomen dat schimmels resistent worden tegen stoffen in antischimmelmiddelen\, zowel voor de volksgezondheid als voor de productie van voedsel. Het RIVM raadt aan om bij de goedkeuring van antischimmelstoffen voor de landbouw\, aandacht te hebben voor kruisresistentie. Tot nu wordt de kans hierop niet meegewogen. Ook wordt aanbevolen het gebruik van antischimmelmiddelen\, waar mogelijk\, in de landbouw te beperken en bepaalde stoffen alleen voor mensen te gebruiken. Verder is meer onderzoek nodig. DESCRIPTION:Het Pesticide Action Network International (PAN) riep de “No Pesticides Use Day” in 1988 in het leven om de industriële ramp in Bhopal\, India te herdenken\, sinds 2010 werd tijdens de bijeenkomst van de Pesticides Task Force besloten om de dag uit te breiden naar een hele week\, de campagne No Pesticides Use Week (NPUW) begint op 3 december en eindigt op 10 december. \nIn 1984 explodeerde op 3 december een bestrijdingsmiddelenfabriek van Union Carbide in Bhopal. Als gevolg van de enorme gaslek vielen er doden en gewonden en nog steeds worden er als gevolg van de ramp misvormde kinderen in het gebied geboren. Op Wereld Anti-Pesticiden Dag staan we stil bij de invloed van bestrijdingsmiddelen op mens en milieu. Wereldwijd worden pesticiden gebruikt\, bijvoorbeeld om groenten en fruit te beschermen tegen ongedierte. Hierdoor wordt dit voedsel vervuild met hormoonontregelende bestrijdingsmiddelen\, een rapport van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie en het VN-Milieuprogramma liet in 2013 al zien dat er een toename is van hormoongerelateerde ziektes onder mens en dier. Bunn en Thomas Netter\, beide werkzaam als voorlichter bij de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie in Genève\, Zwitserland. Bunn en Netter legden hun idee voor aan Dr. Jonathan Mann\, directeur van het Global Programme on AIDS (nu bekend als UNAIDS van de Verenigde Naties). Het concept werd goedgekeurd en op 1 december 1988 vond de eerste Wereldaidsdag plaats. Het doel van Wereldaidsdag is om wereldwijd aandacht te vragen voor de aidsproblematiek en op te roepen tot solidariteit met mensen met hiv en aids. Wereldwijd vinden er vele initiatieven plaats zoals evenementen\, congressen en acties. In Nederland organiseert de non-profitorganisatie Aidsfonds (voorheen Aids Fonds en STOP AIDS NOW!) Wereldaidsdag met onder andere een congres en een campagne. In België vraagt Sensoa aandacht voor de aidsbestrijding. Op Wereldaidsdag wordt opgeroepen het rode lintje op te spelden\, het symbool voor solidariteit met mensen met hiv. Wereldaidsdag heeft elk jaar een thema. DESCRIPTION:Op 30 november 2025 vindt het PAIS Protest plaats: de allereerste landelijke demonstratie voor een betere omgang met Post Acute Infectieuze Syndromen\, zoals Long Covid\, Q-koorts\, Lyme\, Post Sepsis en ME. \nIn Nederland leven honderdduizenden mensen met ernstige\, langdurige klachten na een infectie.\nZe verdwijnen niet plotseling\, maar raken geleidelijk uit het zicht. Volwassenen en kinderen die niet\nmeer kunnen werken\, studeren of zelfs hun huis uitkomen. Velen brengen hun dagen door in bed\,\nin stilte en duisternis. Deze mensen hebben PAIS\, het Post Acuut Infectieus Syndroom. Daaronder vallen ziekten als ME\, Q-koorts\, chronische Lyme\, Post Sepsis en Long Covid. De patiëntengroep is groot\, groeit dagelijks en iedereen kan er een onderdeel van worden. Het lijden van patiënten en hun naasten is groot en ook de samenleving als geheel wordt enorm geraakt door het wegvallen van zoveel mensen. Toch ontbreekt het aan structureel en passend beleid. DESCRIPTION:Sinds 2023 volgt het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) de mondgezondheid in opdracht van het ministerie van Ministerie van Volksgezondheid\, Welzijn en Sport (VWS) omdat er nog geen structurele informatie over mondgezondheid in Nederland was. \nDe meeste Nederlanders (76 procent) poetsen hun tanden minimaal twee keer per dag. 22 procent poetst één keer per dag\, en twee procent poetst niet dagelijks. Dat blijkt uit cijfers van de Monitor Mondgezondheid 2025 van het RIVM. Hoe vaak mensen tandenpoetsen en schoonmaken tussen de tanden en kiezen hangt samen met het bezoek aan de tandarts of mondhygiënist. Mensen die aangaven twee keer per dag of vaker hun tanden te poetsen gaan vaker naar de mondzorgverlener dan mensen die één keer per dag poetsen of die dat niet elke dag doen. Dit onderzoek laat onder meer zien dat mensen met een hoger inkomen en mensen met een hbo (hoger beroepsonderwijs)– of wo-opleiding vaker een (zeer) goede mondgezondheid ervaren dan mensen met een lager inkomen of mensen met basisonderwijs\, een vmbo – of mbo (middelbaar beroepsonderwijs) 1-opleiding. Ook hebben zij vaker twintig of meer tanden en kiezen\, minder vaak een kunstgebit en gaan ze vaker naar de mondzorgverlener. Mensen met een lager inkomen gaven vaker aan dat zij niet naar de mondzorgverlener zijn geweest omdat ze het te duur vonden. Het Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau waarschuwde in februari 2025 het kabinet al dat structurele ongelijkheid het welzijn en de gezondheid beïnvloedt. DESCRIPTION:Recognizing that the case of conjoined twins is a rare condition where the estimated incidence can be 1 in 50\,000 births\, the General Assembly decided to proclaim 24 November as World Conjoined Twins Day. \nThe Assembly emphasized the need to address the condition of conjoined twins\, by raising awareness of their cases at all levels and through a life-course approach\, in cooperation with relevant United Nations agencies and other stakeholders\, as well as by advocating for their well-being and social inclusion\, while taking into account relevant agreed international standards\, norms and principles. Conjoined fetuses are a rare type of identical twins that share a placenta and an amniotic sac\, when the embryo divides at 13-15 days from conception. The incidence ranges from 1/50\,000-1/100\,000 live births. Female fetuses are more commonly affected\, as the ratio of female to male is 3:1. No association with maternal age\, race\, parity\, or heredity has been observed\, and the recurrence risk is negligible. Reaffirming the right of every human being\, without distinction of any kind\, to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health\, the United Nations is committed to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages\, including by strengthening health systems and achieving universal health coverage and all other health-related targets and leaving no one behind. There is the need to scale up efforts to build and strengthen quality\, people-centred\, sustainable and resilient health systems\, and to promote strong global partnerships with all relevant stakeholders to collaboratively support the efforts of Member States\, as appropriate\, to achieve universal health coverage and other health-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. In this sense\, the United Nations strives to strengthen regional and international cooperation\, multilateralism\, global solidarity\, coordination and health governance\, towards the progressive realization of the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for all\, without distinction of any kind. \nLinks:\nWorld Conjoined Twins Day

Also known as Survivor Day\, the day was designated by the United States Congress as a day on which those affected by suicide can join together for healing and support. It was determined that Survivor Day would always fall on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving\, as the holidays are often a difficult time for suicide loss survivors. Each year\, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention supports hundreds of large and small Survivor Day events around the world. In addition to sponsoring in-person events across the globe for International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day\, AFSP hosts two virtual events for survivors of suicide loss\, Survivor Day Live and Día De Esperanza. Survivor Day Live takes place on the Saturday of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. DESCRIPTION:World Toilet Day (WTD) is an United Nations international observance day on 19 November to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. \nWorldwide\, 3.47 billion people live without “safely managed sanitation” and around 419 million people practice open defecation. Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”. In particular\, target 6.2 is to “End open defecation and provide access to sanitation and hygiene”. When the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020 was published\, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said\, “Today\, Sustainable Development Goal 6 is badly off track” and it “is hindering progress on the 2030 Agenda\, the realization of human rights and the achievement of peace and security around the world”. WTD exists to inform\, engage and inspire people to take action toward achieving this goal. The UN General Assembly declared World Toilet Day an official UN day in 2013\, after Singapore had tabled the resolution (its first resolution before the UN’s General Assembly of 193 member states). Prior to that\, World Toilet Day had been established unofficially by the World Toilet Organization (a Singapore-based NGO) in 2001. UN-Water is the official convener of World Toilet Day. UN-Water maintains the official World Toilet Day website and chooses a special theme for each year. WTD is marked by communications campaigns and other activities. Events are planned by UN entities\, international organizations\, local civil society organizations and volunteers to raise awareness and inspire action. Toilets are important because access to a safe functioning toilet has a positive impact on public health\, human dignity\, and personal safety\, especially for females. Sanitation systems that do not safely treat excreta (urine and feces) allow for the spread of disease. Serious soil-transmitted diseases and waterborne diseases such as cholera\, diarrhea\, typhoid\, dysentery and schistosomiasis can result. World Toilet Day is about inspiring action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. World Toilet Day is celebrated on 19th November every year. DESCRIPTION:During the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW)\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) are together calling for responsible use of antibiotics in humans and animals to reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance. \nThe aim of the week is to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance. It also wants to promote the correct usage of antibiotics across all fields in order to prevent further instances of antibiotic resistance. World Antibiotic Awareness Week has been held every November since 2015.  Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria\, viruses\, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance\, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat\, increasing the risk of disease spread\, severe illness and death. The World AMR Awareness Week is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. \nThe theme for WAAW 2025 is “Act Now: Protect Our Present\, Secure Our Future.” This theme underscores the urgent need to take bold\, united action to address AMR. AMR is already harming our health\, food systems\, environment and economies. It’s not a future challenge. It is happening now. Drug-resistant infections are increasing\, yet awareness\, investment and action are still falling short. Building on the momentum of the 2024 United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on AMR\, this call to action urges all stakeholders\, including governments\, civil society\, health-care providers\, veterinarians\, farmers\, environmental actors and the public to translate the political commitments into tangible\, accountable\, life-saving interventions. DESCRIPTION:The 11th Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) 183 Parties\, representing more than 90% of the world’s population\, work together to enhance and advance tobacco control. \nThe Conference of the Parties (COP) is the governing body of the WHO FCTC and is comprised of all Parties to the Convention. The work of the COP is governed by its Rules of Procedure and keeps under regular review the implementation of the Convention and takes the decisions necessary to promote its effective implementation\, and may also adopt protocols\, annexes and amendments to the Convention. The COP may establish such subsidiary bodies as are necessary to achieve the objective of the Convention\, such as the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body on a Protocol on Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. The COP also may establish working groups or expert groups with the mandate to elaborate guidelines and recommendations for the implementation of different treaty provisions. The Meeting of the Parties (MOP) is the governing body of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. The work of the MOP is governed by its Rules of Procedure and keeps under regular review the implementation of the Protocol and takes the decisions necessary to promote its effective implementation. The MOP may establish working groups or expert groups with the mandate to elaborate guidelines and recommendations for the implementation of different protocol provisions. To this end\, the first session of the MOP established a working group on the tracking and tracing system following article 8\, and a second one on assistance and cooperation following articles 12\, 21\, 23\, 24\, 28 and 29. The working groups presented their reports to the second session of the MOP in November 2020. DESCRIPTION:XR Gifvrij\, XR West-Friesland en XR Drenthe organiseren een mars naar de gifproducenten Bayer\, Syngenta en Incotec in Enkhuizen. \nLandbouwgif doodt insecten en bodemleven\, vergiftigt het water\, bedreigt onze gezondheid en vernietigt de biodiversiteit. Dat kán anders\, bewijzen miljoenen agro-ecologisch boeren die samen voldoende voedsel produceren om de wereld te voeden. In Enkhuizen zijn naast elkaar drie bedrijven gevestigd die ‘leven’ van landbouwgif. Die worden op 14 november 2025 ter verantwoording geroepen. Bayer en Syngenta behoren tot de grootste gifproducenten. Hun gezamenlijke omzet is zo’n € 36 miljard (2024). Naast ‘legaal’ landbouwgif produceren ze ook middelen die in de Europese Unie allang verboden zijn. Die worden geëxporteerd\, veelal naar het mondiale zuiden\, en vormen een groot gevaar voor de lokale bevolking. En: wij importeren voedsel uit veel van de landen die dit landbouwgif kopen en gebruiken… Incotec\, dat zaden van een coating voorziet zodat ze makkelijker te planten zijn\, stopt ook landbouwgif in die coatings. DESCRIPTION:Operating Room Nurse Day is is celebrated annually on November 14 and was created to celebrate nurses who provide care to patients before\, during and after surgery\, as well as support and assist surgeons. \nOperating room nurses\, also known as OR nurses\, perioperative nurses\, surgical nurses\, or theatre nurses\, are nurses that specialize in providing care to surgical patients. They are an essential part of the perioperative surgical team and work alongside surgeons\, anesthesiologists\, certified registered nurse anesthetists\, and surgical technicians. Any surgery has three main phases\, known collectively as the perioperative period: the preoperative phase\, the intraoperative phase\, and the postoperative phase. Surgical nurses support patients at each of these stages\, so even though they are often referred to as operating room nurses\, their activities aren’t restricted to the operating room. In some countries\, perioperative nurses can focus on performing specific roles\, such as circulating nurses\, instrument nurses (also known as scrub nurses)\, registered nurse first assistants (RNFA)\, and perianaesthesia nurses (or recovery nurses). OR nurses need to be tidy and organized\, have attention to detail\, be able to anticipate surgeons’ needs and show initiative when appropriate\, and\, of course\, have a good bedside manner and interpersonal skills. And\, naturally\, they need to be properly educated; people who want to become OR nurses usually specialize in surgical nursing while attending nursing school and are often required to pass certification exams before being allowed to work in the operating room. \nIt is usually surgeons and anesthesiologists who get all or most of the credit for successful surgeries\, whereas the contribution of operating room nurses is often overlooked. However\, their work throughout all stages of the perioperative period is immensely important and requires skill and expertise. Yes\, it is surgeons who save patients’ lives\, but it is OR nurses who are at their side every step of the way\, supporting and taking care. Operating Room Nurse Day was created to highlight the importance of OR nurses and celebrate everything they do for their patients and fellow healthcare professionals. It was first proclaimed in 1989 by Terry Branstad\, the then Governor of Iowa. Although this professional observance has no official nationwide recognition\, OR Nurse Day has been celebrated by the professional community ever since its inception. Celebrate Operating Room Nurse Day by thanking surgical nurses you know for their hard work. Send them a gift or a card\, give them a shout-out on social media\, or even visit them in person to deliver your congratulations. And don’t forget to spread the word about the holiday on social media with the hashtag #OperatingRoomNurseDay. Operating Room Nurse Day is not the only professional holiday dedicated to surgical nurses. DESCRIPTION:De Wereld Diabetesdag is een wereldwijde actie die sinds 1991 jaarlijks wordt georganiseerd op 14 november en volledig in het teken staat van diabetes mellitus\, vanaf 2007 is de Wereld Diabetesdag een internationale VN-dag (A/RES/61/225). \nDe activiteiten werden tot 2006 op internationaal niveau georganiseerd door de Internationale Diabetes Federatie (IDF) in samenwerking met de Wereldgezondheids-organisatie (WHO). Na het aannemen van een resolutie over diabetes door de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties op 20 december 2006 (door alle 192 VN-lidstaten) werd Wereld Diabetesdag een internationale VN-dag en worden de lidstaten via de Resolutie aangemoedigd om beleidsplannen te ontwikkelen voor preventie\, behandeling en zorg op het gebied van diabetes. Jaarlijks wordt een wereldwijd thema uitgekozen\, dat door organisaties en/of bedrijven op landelijk of lokaal niveau verder kan worden uitgewerkt. De Wereld Diabetesdag wordt vaak aangegrepen door organisaties als het Diabetes Fonds of door apotheken om de aandacht nog eens extra te richten op diabetes of het risico daarop\, zoals met acties om bij zo veel mogelijk mensen hun bloedglucosespiegel te laten controleren.
