DESCRIPTION:Sinds maart 2018 demonstreren omwonenden van Chemours verenigd in de Stichting Stop PFAS Stop Chemours tegen de ongebreidelde en onaanvaardbare PFAS-uitstoot en de schadelijke gevolgen daarvan voor de volksgezondheid\, zoals vruchtbaarheidsproblemen\, een aangetast immuunsysteem en zelfs kanker. \nWekelijks worden emmers met vervuilde PFAS-grond gestort voor de poort van Chemours terug onder het motto “Nul uit de Pijp”. Na de schokkende Zembla TV uitzending van juni 2023 heeft de stichting Stop PFAS Stop Chemours\, onder leiding van advocate Mevr. Bénédicte Ficq\, aangifte gedaan bij het Openbaar Ministerie van opzettelijke\, ziekmakende\, criminele milieuvervuiling\, waardoor de openbare gezondheid in gevaar komt (Artikel 173A Wetboek van Strafrecht). SUMMARY:Westnijlvirus in Europa
DESCRIPTION:Door de klimaatverandering rukt het westnijlvirus\, de veroorzaker van westnijlkoorts\, op in Europa. \nDe meeste mensen (80%) met een infectie van het westnijlvirus krijgen geen klachten. Zo’n 19% van de besmette mensen krijgt milde griepachtige klachten zoals koorts en hoofdpijn. Bij het westnijlvirus is besmetting van mens tot mens niet mogelijk. Het circuleert in Europa sinds de jaren 1950. In 1996 werd daar voor het eerst een grote uitbraak ontdekt\, toen in Roemenië 393 mensen besmet raakten. In november 2020 werd bij een aantal mensen in Nederland het westnijlvirus vastgesteld. Vermoed werd dat het virus van dieren op mensen was overgebracht door de huissteekmug. Bij een uitbraak van het virus in het westen van de Spaanse regio Andalusië in 2024 kwamen enkele mensen te overlijden. In augustus 2026 werd het virus aangetroffen bij een bloeddonor uit de provincie Utrecht. Later die maand overleed een tachtigjarige persoon aan westnijlkoorts in diezelfde provincie\, hetgeen losstond van de bloeddonor. Meerdere paarden bleken in augustus 2026 met het virus besmet te zijn. In 2025-2026 bleek het virus in België te circuleren. In de week van 10-17 september 2026 zijn er tien nieuwe patiënten met het westnijlvirus gemeld bij het RIVM. Na de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen van 22 november 2023 is door de Kamer unaniem besloten de enquête te starten. Op 30 januari 2024 ging de commissie van start. DESCRIPTION:Zeker 1\,5 miljoen mensen in Nederland gaan vanwege geldgebrek niet\, of te weinig\, naar de tandarts of mondhygiënist. \nDe hulpverleners van Dokters van de Wereld zien dagelijks de schrijnende gevolgen van verwaarloosde mondzorg. Zij doen wat ze kunnen om mensen met pijn te helpen\, maar met alleen noodbehandelingen worden de problemen niet opgelost. Het is volgens Dokters van de Wereld oneerlijk dat je voor bijna ieder pijntje\, ontsteking of ongemak kunt aankloppen bij je huisarts of het ziekenhuis\, behalve voor pijn in je mond. Voor mondzorg moet je je óf extra verzekeren\, of contant afrekenen bij de tandarts. Bijna anderhalf miljoen mensen in Nederland hebben daar het geld niet voor. DESCRIPTION:The Health for All Film Festival (HAFF) has its online awards ceremony every year between May and June. \nIt is an opportunity to meet the winners and converse with the film producers\, the HAFF jury\, and global health experts. This dialogue continues throughout the years with more precise panel discussions recorded and available for health promotion and health education activities. In-person screenings of some of our winning and selected films have been organized by various World Health Organization (WHO) Offices and by several of the WHO HAFF institutional partners from a growing network. These events represent additional opportunities for this educational dialogue between filmmakers and health experts\, building up our global movement for positive behavior changes through films. In April and May 2024\, HAFF releases its new official selection published on WHO’s YouTube channel. The HAFF website presents the list of selected titles for each category of the competition with some keywords to ease your choice of films to watch. This strategic timing allows you all to actively engage with the shortlisted films. You are encouraged to view and comment on your favourite films and to champion them on social media using the hashtag #Film4Health. \nWHO hopes that numerous people will spread the word about this opportunity to interact with health stories. DESCRIPTION:World Immunization Week is a global public health campaign to raise awareness and increase rates of immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases around the world\, it takes place each year during the last week of April (24th – 30th). \nImmunization can protect against 25 different infectious agents or diseases\, from infancy to old age\, including diphtheria\, measles\, pertussis\, polio\, tetanus and COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates active immunization currently averts 2 to 3 million deaths every year. However\, 22.6 million infants worldwide are still missing out on basic vaccines\, mostly in developing countries. Inadequate immunization coverage rates often result from limited resources\, competing health priorities\, poor management of health systems and inadequate surveillance. The ultimate goal of World Immunization Week is for more people – and their communities – to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. World Immunization Week sprung out of the efforts taking place across different countries and regions for a week-long immunization awareness commemoration. Dit is een methode waarbij stoffen worden gemeten in lichaamsmateriaal als bloed of urine. Biomonitoring vindt in Nederland echter alleen incidenteel plaats\, meestal in reactie op maatschappelijke onrust. Daardoor ontbreken belangrijke gegevens over blootstelling die nodig zijn voor het controleren en optimaliseren van beleid. De raad adviseert een biomonitoringsprogramma in te richten dat bestaat uit regelmatige\, herhaalde metingen in lichaamsmateriaal bij een representatieve groep deelnemers. Hierdoor kan de totale blootstelling vanuit verschillende bronnen tegelijk worden gemeten en worden risicogroepen in beeld gebracht. Ook kan de overheid trends in blootstelling in beeld krijgen en meetgegevens vergelijken van locaties waarover zorgen zijn. Als mensen overal ter wereld deze oproep steunen\, kan er een perfecte storm worden gecreëerd die BP doet vrezen voor hun reputatie. De affakkelpraktijken van BP in Rumaila\, Irak hebben in 2021 3\,7 miljoen ton CO2 de atmosfeer in geblazen\, dat is meer dan de jaarlijkse uitstoot van twee miljoen auto’s! Bij het affakkelen komt ook benzeen vrij\, dat volgens de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie is gekoppeld aan kanker. Maar deze praktijk is onnodig. Het wordt hoog tijd dat aandeelhouders hun verantwoordelijkheid nemen en eisen dat de CEO van BP een einde maakt aan het affakkelen van gas\, overal ter wereld. DESCRIPTION:With ever-growing needs for minerals that are critical for renewable energy technologies\, Secretary-General António Guterres is leveraging the United Nations’ convening power to bring together a diverse group of governments and other stakeholders across the entire minerals value chain to develop a set of global common and voluntary principles to safeguard environmental and social standards and embed justice\, in the energy transition. \nA Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals — co-chaired by Ambassador Nozipho Joyce Mxakato-Diseko of South Africa and Director-General for Energy Ditte Juul Jørgensen of the European Commission — will address issues relating to equity\, transparency\, investment\, sustainability and human rights. Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius\, to avert the worst impacts of climate change\, will depend on the sufficient\, reliable and affordable supply of critical energy transition minerals such as copper\, lithium\, nickel\, cobalt and rare earth elements\, which are essential components of clean energy technologies – from wind turbines and solar panels to electric vehicles and battery storage. At COP28\, governments agreed to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. There is no pathway to achieving this goal without a significant increase of supply of critical energy transition minerals.  According to the International Energy Agency\, mineral demand for clean energy applications is set to grow by three and a half times by 2030 on the pathway to reaching global net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Developing countries with large reserves of critical energy transition minerals have an opportunity to transform and diversify their economies\, create green jobs\, and foster sustainable local development. However\, mineral resource development has not always met this promise. \nWithout proper management\, increased demand for these minerals risks perpetuating commodity dependence\, exacerbating geopolitical tensions\, and poses environmental and social challenges with adverse impacts on sustainable development including on livelihoods\, the environment\, health\, human security and human rights. Responding to calls from developing countries for globally agreed guidance to ensure responsible\, fair and just value chains\, the UN-convened Panel brings together governments\, intergovernmental and international organizations\, industry\, and civil society to build trust\, guide the just transition and accelerate the race to renewables. DESCRIPTION:Driekwart van alle voedselreclame in Nederland is voor junkfood\, Foodwatch eist nú een harde wet die alle vormen van marketing voor ongezonde voedingsmiddelen gericht op kinderen tot 18 jaar verbiedt. \nFoodwatch luidt de noodklok: kindermarketing voor ongezonde voedingsmiddelen is niet alleen onverantwoordelijk\, het is een gevaar voor de volksgezondheid. Onze jeugd wordt ondanks vrijwillige afspraken en zelfregulering dagelijks geconfronteerd met een stortvloed aan reclames voor voedingsmiddelen die bijdragen aan overgewicht – een probleem waar nu al 15% van de kinderen in Nederland mee kampt. In sommige wijken is dit zelf een op de drie kinderen. Deze epidemie van overgewicht verergert\, zelfregulering via de Reclame Code Commissie en afspraken uit het Nationaal Preventieakkoord helpen totaal niet om het tij te keren. De harde feiten liegen er niet om: het percentage kinderen met overgewicht daalt niet significant – zelfs met de huidige afspraken blijft het steken op 14% tegen 2040. Het beleid faalt en geeft de sluwe voedingsindustrie\, met hun miljardenbudgetten voor junkfoodmarketing\, vrij spel. Reclamecodes en zelfregulering zijn niet genoeg om onze kinderen te beschermen tegen de agressieve tactieken van deze bedrijven. Strijd mee en teken de petitie. DESCRIPTION:World Hand Hygiene Day campaign objectives: To recognize that people of all levels should work together to influence the culture/climate through clean hands knowledge and behaviour\, to meet the common goal of safety and quality in the health care organization. \nHand hygiene\, hand washing or handwashing is the act of cleaning one’s hands with soap or handwash and water to remove viruses/bacteria/microorganisms\, dirt\, grease\, or other harmful and unwanted substances stuck to the hands. Drying of the washed hands is part of the process as wet and moist hands are more easily recontaminated. If soap and water are unavailable\, hand sanitizer that is at least 60% (v/v) alcohol in water can be used instead\, unless hands are visibly excessively dirty or greasy. Hand hygiene is central to preventing the spread of infectious diseases in home and everyday life settings. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends washing hands for at least 20 seconds before and after certain activities. These include the five critical times during the day where washing hands with soap is important to reduce fecal-oral transmission of disease: after using the toilet (for urination\, defecation\, menstrual hygiene)\, after cleaning a child’s bottom (changing nappies)\, before feeding a child\, before eating and before/after preparing food or handling raw meat\, fish\, or poultry. When both hand washing and using hand sanitizer are not available\, hands can be cleaned with uncontaminated ash and clean water\, although the benefits and harms are uncertain for reducing the spread of viral or bacterial infections. However\, frequent hand washing can lead to skin damage due to drying of the skin. Moisturizing lotion is often recommended to keep the hands from drying out; dry skin can lead to skin damage which can increase the risk for the transmission of infection. \n2024 Theme: Promoting knowledge and capacity building of health and care workers through innovative and impactful training and education\, on infection prevention and control\, including hand hygiene.   \n\n\n\nSlogan: Why is sharing knowledge about hand hygiene still so important? Because it helps stop the spread of harmful germs in healthcare.  \n\n\n\n\n\nObjectives of WHHD 2024 \n\n\n\n\nStrengthen learning approaches to enable implementation of innovative and effective training to empower health and care workers to improve hand hygiene and IPC at point of care with enhanced knowledge\, skills and behaviours.\nPromote access to innovative hand hygiene and IPC training resources for health and care workers.\nRaise awareness about the importance of knowledge and learning on hand hygiene at the right times to prevent a range of infectious diseases.\nEncourage measurement and evaluation mechanisms to assess the impact of training and education on IPC standards and practices including hand hygiene\, including their effect on the prevention of HAI and AMR.\n\n\n\n\nLinks:\nWorld Hand Hygiene Day

DESCRIPTION:The Wings for Life World Run is a running competition held on the first weekend of May since 2014 to collect funds for the not-for-profit foundation Wings for Life\, the entry fee goes completely to Spinal Cord Research. \nIt became the largest running event in 2021 with 184\,236 runners participating in one single event. In 2023\, the Wings for Life World Run celebrated its 10th anniversary with a record-breaking 206\,728 participants. The Wings for Life World Run is peculiar in that participants don’t have to run a specific distance like in comparable competitions. At the Wings for Life World Run\, all participants start at the same time\, worldwide. It doesn’t matter whether they are professional athletes\, fun runners\, total beginners or in a wheelchair. There is no traditional finish line. Instead\, a “Catcher Car” pursues and passes the runners and rollers\, one after the other either physically at one of the Flagship Runs or virtually with the app\, will be caught. DESCRIPTION:World Lupus Day wordt georganiseerd door de World Lupus Federation en heeft als doel de levenskwaliteit te verbeteren voor lijders aan de mogelijk fatale auto-immuunziekte lupus en vraagt voor de patiënten meer aandacht en begrip voer de impact van deze ziekte.\n\nMaar wil ook zorgen dat onderwijs\, de gezondheidszorg en andere instanties toegankelijk zijn en blijven. En maakt zich hard voor meer onderzoek naar de oorzaken van lupus\, eerdere diagnose en behandeling en wereldwijd betere epidemiologische gegevens. Lupus is een chronische\, auto-immuunziekte die elk deel van het lichaam (huid\, gewrichten en / of organen in het lichaam) kan beschadigen. Chronisch betekent dat de tekenen en symptomen langer duren dan zes weken en vaak gedurende vele jaren aanhouden. Lupus is niet besmettelijk\, zelfs niet door seksueel contact\, daardoor kan je lupus niet krijgen of geven aan iemand. Staat ook helemaal los van HIV of AIDS. Hoe je het wel krijgt is onbekend. Lupus kan variëren van mild tot levensbedreigend en moet altijd door een arts worden behandeld. Met goede medische zorg kunnen de meeste mensen met lupus een vol leven leiden. Er bestaan vier vormen van lupus: \n\n    systemische lupus (SLE) is goed voor 70% van alle gevallen: een belangrijk orgaan of weefsel\, zoals het hart\, de longen\, de nieren of de hersenen\, worden aangetast.\n    cutane lupus (die alleen de huid aantast) is goed voor ongeveer 10% van alle gevallen\n    drug induced lupus (DILE): bij bepaalde geneesmiddelen zoals antibiotica\, schildklierpreparaten of medicijnen tegen epilepsie\, is een bijwerking dat je ziekteverschijnselen van lupus kan vertonen. DESCRIPTION:Op de geboortedag van Florence Nightingale\, de grondlegster van het verpleegkundige beroep\, wordt internationaal de Dag van de Verpleging gevierd. \nSinds 1964 wordt deze dag ook in Nederland gevierd. De Internationale Raad voor Verpleegkundigen en de Internationale Rode Kruis- en Rode Halve Maan-beweging vieren dit jaar gezamenlijk de Internationale Dag van de Verpleging. Zij willen alle verpleegkundigen\, waar dan ook ter wereld\, prijzen voor hun inzet. Het zijn mensen die alleen maar ons respect verdienen. Want aan de frontlinie staan in een oorlog is angstig en levensbedreigend. \nDag van het Bewustzijn / Awareness Day werd door Thomas Michael Hennessy\, Jr. bedacht\, de oprichter van Repeal Existing Stereotypes about Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases (CIND). De Amerikaanse Tom wilde deze dag niet alleen nationaal lanceren\, hij richtte zijn pijlen op de hele wereld. Internationale Dag van Bewustzijn wil met deze dag meer (bewuste) aandacht vragen voor het hele spectrum van chronische immunologische en neurologische ziekten waaronder ook ME/CVS valt. Niet vreemd dat op de geboortedatum van Florence Nightingale\, de grondlegger van de moderne verpleegkunde\, Dag van Bewustzijn wordt gevierd. \nIn 1992 heeft de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) ME/CVS erkend als ziekte. Vandaar dat sinds 12 mei 1992 jaarlijks de Internationale ME-dag op de Internationale Dag voor Chronische Immunologische en Neurologische Aandoeningen valt. Het staat in de boeken vermeld dat Florence vanaf haar 35e levensjaar worstelde met ME-achtige klachten zoals pijn op de borst\, hoofdpijn\, snelle spiervermoeidheid\, aanhoudende pijn in de bovenrug en concentratieproblemen. DESCRIPTION:De Europese organisaties die aangesloten zijn bij de Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) organiseren gedurende de maand mei workshops en voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten waarin extra aandacht gevraagd wordt voor coeliakie en NCGS (Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). \nIemand met coeliakie (glutenintolerantie) kan niet tegen gluten. Gluten is een eiwit dat van nature voorkomt in tarwe (waaronder spelt)\, rogge en gerst (gort). Gluten zit in brood\, crackers\, pizza\, pasta\, paneermeel\, koek\, cake en taart. Het zit ook verstopt in de ingrediënten van soepen (bindmiddel\, vermicelli of vlees)\, in sauzen\, sommige snoepjes\, ijssoorten en bier.  Overstappen op producten van en met haver is geen optie want haver is vaak gecontamineerd (besmet) en daardoor niet zonder meer veilig te gebruiken in een glutenvrij dieet. Glutenvrij eten kan dan wel populair zijn als gezondheidsdieet maar voor mensen met coeliakie en NCGS is het geen hype\, het is gewoon medisch noodzakelijk!
