SUMMARY:Westnijlvirus in Europa
DESCRIPTION:Door de klimaatverandering rukt het westnijlvirus\, de veroorzaker van westnijlkoorts\, op in Europa. \nDe meeste mensen (80%) met een infectie van het westnijlvirus krijgen geen klachten. Zo’n 19% van de besmette mensen krijgt milde griepachtige klachten zoals koorts en hoofdpijn. Bij het westnijlvirus is besmetting van mens tot mens niet mogelijk. Het circuleert in Europa sinds de jaren 1950. In 1996 werd daar voor het eerst een grote uitbraak ontdekt\, toen in Roemenië 393 mensen besmet raakten. In november 2020 werd bij een aantal mensen in Nederland het westnijlvirus vastgesteld. Vermoed werd dat het virus van dieren op mensen was overgebracht door de huissteekmug. Bij een uitbraak van het virus in het westen van de Spaanse regio Andalusië in 2024 kwamen enkele mensen te overlijden. In augustus 2026 werd het virus aangetroffen bij een bloeddonor uit de provincie Utrecht. Later die maand overleed een tachtigjarige persoon aan westnijlkoorts in diezelfde provincie\, hetgeen losstond van de bloeddonor. Meerdere paarden bleken in augustus 2026 met het virus besmet te zijn. In 2025-2026 bleek het virus in België te circuleren. In de week van 10-17 september 2026 zijn er tien nieuwe patiënten met het westnijlvirus gemeld bij het RIVM. DESCRIPTION:De parlementaire enquête naar de aanpak van de coronapandemie is een parlementaire enquête van de Tweede Kamer die onderzoek zal doen naar de Nederlandse aanpak van de coronapandemie. \nOp 4 november 2021 nam de Tweede Kamer unaniem een motie van VVD-Kamerlid Aukje de Vries aan die opriep tot deze parlementaire enquête. Vanwege onenigheid over het onderzoeksvoorstel besloot de Tweede Kamervoorzitter Vera Bergkamp om de enquête uit te stellen. Na de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen van 22 november 2023 is door de Kamer unaniem besloten de enquête te starten. Op 30 januari 2024 ging de commissie van start. DESCRIPTION:Zeker 1\,5 miljoen mensen in Nederland gaan vanwege geldgebrek niet\, of te weinig\, naar de tandarts of mondhygiënist. \nDe hulpverleners van Dokters van de Wereld zien dagelijks de schrijnende gevolgen van verwaarloosde mondzorg. Zij doen wat ze kunnen om mensen met pijn te helpen\, maar met alleen noodbehandelingen worden de problemen niet opgelost. Het is volgens Dokters van de Wereld oneerlijk dat je voor bijna ieder pijntje\, ontsteking of ongemak kunt aankloppen bij je huisarts of het ziekenhuis\, behalve voor pijn in je mond. Voor mondzorg moet je je óf extra verzekeren\, of contant afrekenen bij de tandarts. Bijna anderhalf miljoen mensen in Nederland hebben daar het geld niet voor. SUMMARY:Water op de Kaart
DESCRIPTION:De campagne ‘Water op de kaart’ van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en de stichting Natuur & Milieu moet een beeld gaan geven van de kwaliteit van water rond een riooloverstort. \nZo’n 40 burgerwetenschappers verspreid over Nederland gaan in hun eigen buurt monsters nemen van de zogenaamde kleine oppervlaktewateren: de sloten of vijvers om de hoek. Dat water blijkt namelijk van niet zo’n goeie kwaliteit. Bij hevige plensbuien\, die in toenemende mate voorkomen\, komt het riool vol met water te zitten en stroomt het over naar omliggende sloten en plassen. Daar zit het probleem. Door die overstort komen stoffen uit het riool als medicijnresten en poep en plas in het oppervlaktewater terecht. DESCRIPTION:BLOOM en Foodwatch Frankrijk tonen aan dat 100% van de 150 door hun onderzochte tonijnproducten kwik bevat. 10% van deze onderzochte voedingsmiddelen met tonijn bevat zelfs meer kwik dan de wettelijk toegestane hoeveelheid. \nIn het Franstalige rapport ‘Du Poison dans le Poisson’ heeft de Franse ngo BLOOM 148 blikjes tonijn uit een groot deel van Europa (Duitsland\, Engeland\, Spanje\, Frankrijk en Italië) getest. Er zijn in dit onderzoek geen blikjes uit de Nederlandse markt getest. De resultaten zijn echter schrikbarend. 100% van de blikjes zijn verontreinigd met kwik\, 10% overschreed bovendien de huidige norm die wordt getolereerd voor verse tonijn (1mg/kg) en 57% overschreed het niveau van 0\,3 mg/kg\, dat meer bescherming biedt voor de gezondheid en die geldig is toegepast voor andere vissoorten. Vanwege de gevaren die regelmatige inname van kwik met zich meebrengt\, zelfs in kleine doses\, eist Foodwatch Frankrijk samen met BLOOM dat alle blikjes die de norm van 0\,3 mg/kg overschrijden uit de verkoop worden genomen. Tonijn is een van de meest met kwik verontreinigde vissen\, de meest geconsumeerde in Europa en bovendien de vis met de minst beschermende normen voor consumenten.  Complete waanzin zeker als je kijkt naar de gezondheidsrisico’s van kwik en daarvan afgeleide stoffen. Kwik is een van de 10 meest zorgwekkende stoffen ter wereld volgens de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO)\, naast asbest en arsenicum. Een derivaat van kwik dat vaak in voedsel wordt aangetroffen is methylkwik. Deze stof is door het Internationaal Agentschap voor Kankeronderzoek (IARC) geclassificeerd als mogelijk kankerverwekkend.  Dit metaal is ook een krachtige neurotoxische stof: het is vooral gevaarlijk voor zwangere vrouwen en kinderen\, maar kan ook de hersenfunctie van volwassen personen aantasten. SUMMARY:Trump stopt hiv-steun: miljoenen levens in gevaar - petitie
DESCRIPTION:Op 17 juni 2025 werden maar liefst 60.103 handtekeningen aangeboden in Den Haag. Al deze Nederlanders roepen de overheid op om niet te bezuinigen op de aidsbestrijding en mensen met hiv wereldwijd te blijven steunen.\nMiljoenen levens staan op het spel nu Trump PEPFAR\, het belangrijkste wereldwijde hiv-programma\, 90 dagen stillegt. Of zelfs langer… \nTrump heeft aangekondigd dat de Verenigde Staten niet langer “blind geld uitdelen zonder dat het iets oplevert voor het Amerikaanse volk”\, aldus een woordvoerder. Dit rampzalige besluit leidt tot een schrikbarende toename van het aantal hiv-infecties en kost duizenden kinderen het leven. Ondanks dat veel landen de afgelopen jaren meer eigen geld in de aidsbestrijding hebben gestoken\, zijn met name landen in Sub-Sahara Afrika voor een groot deel afhankelijk van PEPFAR. De gevolgen van Trumps besluit zijn verwoestend voor de organisaties waarmee het Aidsfonds samenwerkt: \n\nKlinieken moeten hun deuren sluiten: Dit betekent dat mensen geen toegang meer hebben tot de zorg die ze zo hard nodig hebben.\nMedisch personeel is op staande voet ontslagen: Dit betekent niet alleen een verlies van inkomen\, maar ook een verlies van essentiële zorg voor de patiënten.\nVoorraden van cruciale medicijnen raken op: Het is onduidelijk of en wanneer er geld komt om nieuwe medicijnen en testen te kopen.\n\nDaarom vraagt het Aidsfonds je om de petitie te tekenen en politici in Den Haag op te roepen om druk uit te oefenen op de Amerikaanse regering om het PEPFAR programma voort te zetten en ook in Nederland niet te bezuinigen op de aidsbestrijding. DESCRIPTION:Steeds vaker krijgen artsen te maken met medische desinformatie in de spreekkamer\, blijkt uit eerdere onderzoeken van de KNMG die in samenwerking met de NOS en isdatechtzo.nl zijn uitgevoerd. \nZo geeft 85% van de artsen aan dat ze te maken krijgen met onjuist geïnformeerde burgers. Dit kan leiden tot gezondheidsschade. Daarom start Artsenfederatie KNMG samen met isdatechtzo.nl de bewustwordingscampagne ‘Gecheckt? Wel zo gezond!’. Veel mensen volgen medisch advies op van sociale media en andere online platforms\, maar verifiëren niet altijd of de informatie afkomstig is van betrouwbare bronnen. Onjuiste medische informatie kan ernstige gevolgen hebben voor de volksgezondheid. Zo kunnen misleidende adviezen mensen ervan weerhouden om tijdig professionele zorg te zoeken. DESCRIPTION:De Roparun (“Rotterdam Parijs run”) is een non-stop estafetteloop die sinds 1992 wordt gehouden\, voorheen vond de loop plaats tussen Rotterdam en Parijs\, tegenwoordig zijn er twee routes: vanuit Frankrijk\, met Clastres als startplaats\, en Enschede naar Rotterdam. \nIn het pinksterweekeinde\, van zaterdagmiddag tot en met maandagmiddag\, moeten de deelnemers een afstand van ongeveer 500 kilometer afleggen. Tot 2004 liepen de deelnemers\, destijds nog in het Hemelvaartweekend\, van Rotterdam naar Parijs\, maar sinds 2004 start de run in Parijs en is de finish op de Coolsingel in Rotterdam. Al vanaf het eerste jaar is het ophalen van geld het hoofddoel van deze sportieve prestatie. DESCRIPTION:Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are the world’s most widely used weed control agents. Public health concerns have increased since the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen in 2015. \nTo further investigate the health effects of glyphosate and GBHs\, the Ramazzini Institute launched the Global Glyphosate Study (GGS)\, which is designed to test a wide range of toxicological outcomes. Reported in the research ‘Carcinogenic effects of long-term exposure from prenatal life to glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides in Sprague–Dawley rats‘ are the results of the carcinogenicity arm of the GGS. Glyphosate and two GBHs\, Roundup Bioflow used in the European Union (EU) and RangerPro used in the U.S.\, were administered to male and female Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats\, beginning at gestational day 6 (via maternal exposure) through 104 weeks of age. Glyphosate was administered through drinking water at three doses: the EU acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0.5 mg/kg body weight/day\, 5 mg/kg body weight/day and the EU no-observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of 50 mg/kg body weight/day. The two GBH formulations were administered at the same glyphosate-equivalent doses. \nIn all 3 treatment groups\, statistically significant dose-related increased trends or increased incidences of benign and malignant tumors at multiple anatomic sites were observed compared to historical and concurrent controls. These tumors arose in haemolymphoreticular tissues (leukemia)\, skin\, liver\, thyroid\, nervous system\, ovary\, mammary gland\, adrenal glands\, kidney\, urinary bladder\, bone\, endocrine pancreas\, uterus and spleen (hemangiosarcoma). Increased incidences occurred in both sexes. Most of these involved tumors that are rare in SD rats (background incidence < 1%) with 40% of leukemias deaths in the treated groups occurring before 52 weeks of age and increased early deaths were also observed for other solid tumors. \nGlyphosate and GBHs at exposure levels corresponding to the EU ADI and the EU NOAEL caused dose-related increases in incidence of multiple benign and malignant tumors in SD rats of both sexes. Early-life onset and mortality were observed for multiple tumors. These results provide robust evidence supporting IARC’s conclusion that there is “sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity [of glyphosate] in experimental animals”. DESCRIPTION:Albinism is a rare\, non-contagious\, genetically inherited difference present at birth\, congenital absence of melanin in an animal or plant resulting in white hair\, feathers\, scales and skin and reddish pink or blue eyes. \nIn almost all types of albinism\, both parents must carry the gene for it to be passed on\, even if they do not have albinism themselves. The condition is found in both sexes regardless of ethnicity and in all countries of the world. Albinism results in a lack of pigmentation (melanin) in the hair\, skin and eyes\, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light. As a result\, almost all people with albinism are visually impaired and are prone to developing skin cancer. There is no cure for the absence of melanin that is central to albinism. While numbers vary\, it is estimated that in North America and Europe 1 in every 17\,000 to 20\,000 people have some form of albinism. The condition is much more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa\, with estimates of 1 in 1\,400 people being affected in Tanzania  and prevalence as high as 1 in 1\,000 reported for select populations in Zimbabwe and for other specific ethnic groups in Southern Africa. \nThe lack of melanin means persons with albinism are highly vulnerable to developing skin cancer. In some countries\, a majority of persons with albinism die from skin cancer between 30 and 40 years of age. Skin cancer is highly preventable when persons with albinism enjoy their right to health. This includes access to regular health checks\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing. In a significant number of countries\, these life-saving means are unavailable or inaccessible to them. Consequently\, in the realm of development measures\, persons with albinism have been and are among those “left furthest behind.” Therefore\, they ought to be targeted for human rights interventions in the manner envisioned by the Sustainable Development Goals. \nDue to a lack of melanin in the skin and eyes\, persons with albinism often have permanent visual impairment. They also face discrimination due to their skin colour; as such\, they are often subject to multiple and intersecting discrimination on the grounds of both disability and colour. People with albinism face multiple forms of discrimination worldwide. Albinism is still profoundly misunderstood\, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition\, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion. This leads to various forms of stigma and discrimination. \nIn some communities\, erroneous beliefs and myths\, heavily influenced by superstition\, put the security and lives of persons with albinism at constant risk. These beliefs and myths are centuries old and are present in cultural attitudes and practices around the world. While it has been reported that persons with albinism globally face discrimination and stigma\, information on cases of physical attacks against persons with albinism is mainly available from countries in Africa. \nPersons with albinism face more severe forms of discrimination and violence in those regions\, where the majority of the general population are relatively dark-skinned. In other words\, a greater degree of contrast in pigmentation often gives rise to a greater degree of discrimination. That appears to be the case in some sub-Saharan African countries where albinism is shrouded in myth and dangerous and erroneous beliefs. The figures on violations against persons with albinism are telling. There have been hundreds of cases of attacks and killings of persons with albinism reported in 28 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the past decade. The attacks have several root causes including ignorance\, longstanding stigma\, poverty and most abhorrently\, harmful practices emanating from manifestation of beliefs in witchcraft. The alarming reality is that these horrendous practices continue today. \nThe manner in which discrimination faced by persons with albinism manifests itself\, and its severity\, vary from region to region. In the western world\, including North America\, Europe and Australia\, discrimination often consists of name-calling\, persistent teasing and bullying of children with albinism. DESCRIPTION:World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is celebrated every year by people around the world on June 14\, it is celebrated on the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner on June 14\, 1868\, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system. \nWBDD was organised for the first time in 2005\, by a joint initiative of World Health Organisation\, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products\, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary\, life-saving gifts of blood. Transfusion of blood and blood products helps and save millions of lives every year. It can help patients who suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with higher quality of life\, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential\, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care. Access to safe and sufficient blood and blood products can help reduce rates of death and disability due to severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth. In many countries\, there is not an adequate supply of safe blood\, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available\, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors. The WHO’s goal is for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020. In 2014\, 60 countries have their national blood supplies based on 99-100% voluntary unpaid blood donations\, with 73 countries still largely dependent on family and paid donors. \n2025 theme: Give blood\, give hope: together we save lives. DESCRIPTION:Building on a rapidly growing global consensus\, in 2018 the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) started a worldwide dengue awareness campaign\, which included calling on the UN and WHO to designate a World Dengue Day. \nIts petition for a World Dengue Day has to date garnered over 26\,500 signatures\, endorsed by a growing and global collective of patients\, policy makers\, researchers\, professionals and advocates from over 110 countries\, who share the clear goal of reducing the burden of dengue around the world. In addition\, ISNTD also convened an international and multi-sectoral Dengue Advisory Group\, comprised of partners from Ministries of Health\, research and academia\, NGOs and civic society\, to guide this campaign. Such a move is not without precedent. On 15 June 2011\, ASEAN Health Ministers first declared that day — and each subsequent 15 June — ASEAN Dengue Day. This important annual event allows ASEAN members\, in coordination with WHO\, to consolidate dengue prevention and control measures. \nThe World Dengue Day campaign is aiming to achieve the same – on an international scale given the rapidly growing global threat of dengue. Growing population densities\, unplanned urban development\, poor water storage and unsatisfactory sanitary conditions are all common factors that contribute to the worsening burden of this mosquito-borne disease – not just for ASEAN\, but for many countries around the world. The disease has significant impact on the socio-economic status of every country. SUMMARY:#ALSMNDWithoutBorders Global day of recognition of ALS/MND / Wereld ALS dag 2025
DESCRIPTION:Every year the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations celebrates 21 June as the global day of recognition of ALS/MND – a disease that affects people in every country of the globe. \nALS/MND  is a global problem. It does not discriminate on the basis of race\, ethnicity\, socioeconomic status or region. There are people living with ALS/MND all over the world. For every person diagnosed\, the impact of the disease will be forever felt by their loved ones. Alliance members across the world use the hashtag #ALSMNDWithoutBorders on 21 June to raise awareness and funds on Global Day. June 21 is a solstice – a turning point – and each year the ALS/MND community undertake a range of activities to express their hope that this day will be another turning point in the search for cause\, treatment and cure of ALS/MND.\n \nThe PALS and CALS Advisory Council and the Alliance support the “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Optional Protocol” as brought forward by the United Nations. The Convention supports the global promotion and protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all people with disabilities\, including those living with ALS/MND. Of note\, the Alliance emphasizes the importance of Articles 9 and 19 surrounding a person’s independence and their rights to equal accessibility and participation in daily living and enjoyment of life. \nBy providing equal access to all aspects of daily living and services\, people living with ALS/MND are able to live autonomously and independently. This means that people living with ALS/MND are able to make their own choices or decisions about their daily living\, living arrangements\, healthcare provision\, and community involvement. Global provision of equal access to services such as transportation\, housing\, workplace environment\, medical facilities\, and information services can support both enjoyment and quality of life and support for a person’s independence. In addition to supporting the Convention\, these rights as they pertain to people living with ALS/MND are extrapolated into the Fundamental Rights of People Living with ALS/MND. \nLinks:\nArtists Against ALS

SUMMARY:Wereld Vitiligo Dag / World Vitiligo Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Elk jaar op 25 juni wordt tijdens Wereld Vitiligo Dag (World Vitiligo Day) aandacht gevraagd voor vitiligo\, wereldwijd staan er mensen stil bij de huidaandoening die voorkomt bij 1% van de mensen. \nDoor het delen van kennis en het ophalen van donaties\, wordt er gestreefd naar meer bewustwording en een verbetering in de kwaliteit van leven voor mensen met vitiligo. Vitiligo (soms ook leukoderma genoemd) is een huidziekte\, waarbij bepaalde pigmentafwijkingen optreden vanwege verstoringen in de productie van het huidpigment melanine. De patiënt ontwikkelt meer of minder uitgebreide\, scherp begrensde maar onregelmatig gevormde plekken waar het huidpigment verdwenen is\, vaak symmetrisch verdeeld op het lichaam of de ledematen. Vooral bij mensen met een donkere huid geeft dit een zeer opvallend en (door de patiënt zelf ervaren als) ontsierend effect en de ongepigmenteerde huid kan in de zon ook makkelijk verbranden. Langs de randen van de plekken vormen zich soms donkere plekken. Dit komt vooral veel voor in de schaamstreek\, bij mannen op het scrotum. De donkere plekken veranderen soms van structuur en plaats\, en blijven vaak niet stabiel maar blijven meestal wel beperkt tot een bepaald gedeelte van de huid en breiden zich vaak niet verder uit. Vitiligo kan overal op de huid van het menselijk lichaam voorkomen en wordt vaak als een probleem ervaren als het in bijvoorbeeld de gelaatsstreek ontstaat of als er op het lichaam meerdere plekken ontstaan. Vitiligo over een groot deel van het gehele lichaam komt minder voor. Mensen met deze pigmentafwijking mogen niet te lang blootgesteld worden aan zonlicht aangezien zij minder beschermd zijn tegen UV-straling. Vitiligo gaat soms gepaard met andere auto-immuunziekten\, zoals hypothyreoïdie\, lichen sclerosus\, myasthenia gravis en de ziekte van Addison. DESCRIPTION:The UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/79/294\, proclaiming 27 June of each year the International Day of Deafblindness. \nThis day commemorates the birth of renowned author Helen Keller (1880 – 1968)\, one of the most iconic figures in the deafblindness community. Deafblindness is a combined vision and hearing impairment of such severity that it is hard for the impaired senses to compensate for each other\, and is thus a distinct disability with its own specific challenges\, barriers and requirements for support and inclusion\, different from those provided to individuals\, who are solely deaf or blind. Deafblind persons face barriers owing to deafblindness not being treated and/or recognized as a distinct disability\, further leading to invisibility in statistics\, policies and programmes\, and therefore impeding access to services. Professional deafblind interpreters and interpreter-guides are critical in ensuring access to information\, communication\, services and fundamental rights\, as well as enabling individuals with deafblindness to live independently and be included in the community. \nLinks:\nDay of Deafblindness

DESCRIPTION:Sclerodermie of systemische sclerose (Engels: (systemic) scleroderma) is een chronische auto-immuunziekte die wordt gerekend tot de reumatische aandoeningen. \nDe naam ‘Sclerodermie’ betekent ‘harde huid’. De ziekte veroorzaakt een verharding (sclerosering) van bindweefsel die zich doorgaans voordoet in de huid en vaak gepaard gaat met problemen van de haarvaten. Het kan ook interne organen aantasten\, waaronder de maag\, slokdarm\, darm\, longen en nieren. Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen twee verschijningsvormen: morfea en systemische Sclerodermie. Hoewel morfea en systemische sclerose gelijksoortige huidafwijkingen hebben\, is er verder weinig overlap. Morfea gaat niet in systemische sclerose over. Symptomen die pleiten voor systemische sclerose zijn het fenomeen van Raynaud\, symmetrische huidafwijkingen en positieve ANA. Systemische sclerose is relatief zeldzaam: slechts twee tot zestien nieuwe gevallen per miljoen inwoners. Morfea komt vaker voor. De oorzaak is niet bekend. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nDe overleving van kanker vier jaar na de diagnose is gestegen tot 72%\, dat was dertig jaar geleden nog 51%. \nOp 1 juli 2025 publiceert het Integraal Kankercentrum Nederland (IKNL) weer de trends in overleving voor kanker op basis van de nieuwste cijfers uit de Nederlandse Kankerregistratie (NKR). Bij patiënten jonger dan 65 jaar is de overleving ongeveer 10% hoger dan bij patiënten van 65 jaar en ouder. Hoewel de overleving sinds begin jaren negentig aanvankelijk sneller steeg bij jongere patiënten\, is er in de afgelopen vijftien jaar juist sprake van een sterkere stijging bij oudere patiënten.
