SUMMARY:World Mosquito Day / Wereld Muggen Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Mosquito Day\, observed annually on 20 August\, is a commemoration of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that female anopheline mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans\, thus confirming the mosquito-malaria theory\, an idea that had been building in recent years through the work of various contributors such as Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran and Patrick Manson. \nPrior to the discovery of the transmitting organism\, vector\, there were few means for controlling the spread of the disease although the discovery of quinine in treatment had alleviated the problem of treatment. According to one survey\, nearly half the world population was at significant risk from malaria in the 19th century with a 10% mortality among those infected. Ross had already conducted experiments with Culex (possibly C. fatigans) fed on birds infected with bird malaria Protesoma relictum (now Plasmodium relictum) in 1894 and noted that they developed in mosquito gut and had surmised that the same may happen in malaria. The discovery was made in a small laboratory in Begumpet area of Secunderabad\, Hyderabad. Today the laboratory is known as the Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Parasitology and houses a small museum on Ross and his malaria research. The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine holds Mosquito Day celebrations every year\, including events such as parties and exhibitions. The event was inspired by a tea party honouring Ross held on 20 August 1931 by the Ross Institute and Hospital for Tropical Diseases\, which merged with the School in 1934. \nLinks:\nWorld Mosquito Day\n \nWorld Mosquito Week \nWereld Muggen Dag \nWorld Mosquito Day 2026: Which Mosquito Spreads Which Disease?

SUMMARY:Wereld Longkankerdag / World Lung Cancer Day 2026

SUMMARY:World Hepatitis Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Hepatitis Day is observed each year on 28 July to raise awareness of viral hepatitis\, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and liver cancer. \nWorld Hepatitis Day\, 28 July\, is an opportunity to step up national and international efforts on hepatitis\, encourage actions and engagement by individuals\, partners and the public and highlight the need for a greater global response as outlined in the World Health Organization (WHO) Global hepatitis report of 2017. The date of 28 July was chosen because it is the birthday of Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg\, who discovered hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus. Low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030. \nThe World Hepatitis Day 2026 theme\, “Hepatitis: Let’s break it down”\, is a call to remove the barriers that stand between people and the services that can save their lives. Viral hepatitis continues to be a major cause of preventable illness and death worldwide. The tools needed to eliminate viral hepatitis already exist. Effective vaccines\, accurate diagnostics\, curative treatments for hepatitis C\, and lifelong therapies for hepatitis B can prevent infections\, save lives\, and reduce liver cancer and cirrhosis. Despite this\, millions of people remain undiagnosed\, untreated\, or unable to access care due to stigma\, limited awareness\, health system gaps\, and persistent inequalities. The 2026 campaign calls for turning proven science into action through stronger political commitment\, sustained investment\, and efforts to expand equitable access to prevention\, testing\, treatment\, and care. \nLinks:\nWorld Hepatitis Day

SUMMARY:Wereld Hoofd- en halskankerdag / World Head and Neck Cancer Day 2026
World Head and Neck Cancer Day

SUMMARY:World #DrowningPrevention Day / Dag ter voorkoming van verdrinking 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Drowning Prevention Day\, declared through the April 2021 UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/75/273 “Global drowning prevention”\, is held annually on 25 July. \nThis global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and to offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. All stakeholders – governments\, UN agencies\, civil society organizations\, the private sector\, academia and individuals – are invited to mark World Drowning Prevention Day by highlighting the need for urgent\, coordinated and multi-sectoral action on proven measures such as: \n\ninstalling barriers controlling access to water;\nproviding safe places away from water such as crèches for pre-school children with capable childcare;\nteaching swimming\, water safety and safe rescue skills;\ntraining bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation;\nsetting and enforcing safe boating\, shipping and ferry regulations;\nimproving flood risk management.\n\nThe UN General Assembly resolution invited WHO to coordinate actions on drowning prevention within the UN system. In this capacity\, WHO leads preparations for World Drowning Prevention Day by producing related advocacy materials\, hosting a global launch event and supporting national and local activities in countries and communities around the world. Every year\, an estimated 236\,000 people drown\, making drowning a major public health problem worldwide. SUMMARY:Wereld Sjögren’s Dag / World Sjögren’s Day (Syndroom van Sjögren) 2026
\nLinks:\nWorld Sjögren’s Day Is July 23. SUMMARY:World Brain Day / Wereld Hersendag 2026
DESCRIPTION:Click image to read\nThere are many days related to neurological diseases being celebrated by professional organizations in collaboration with World Health Organization\, national organizations and local health ministries including World Stroke day\, Epilepsy Day\, Rabies Day. \nThese days have proven to be extremely helpful in promoting public awareness and generating advocacy throughout the globe including developing Asian\, African and Latin American countries. The World Federation of Neurology was established on July 22 1957. It was suggested by the Public Awareness and Advocacy Committee that 22 July 2014 should be celebrated as “World Brain Day”. This proposal was announced at WCN\, Council of Delegates meeting on 22 September\, 2013 and the proposal was received with a warm welcome by delegates. The Board of Trustees meeting in February 2014 endorsed this proposal as an annual activity. World Brain Day 2026 is a global call to address these disparities and advocate for change. Science and medicine have made significant progress in understanding the brain\, yet millions of people globally still cannot access essential care. More than 3.4 billion people currently live with neurological conditions\, making brain disorders the leading cause of disability worldwide. Access to neurological care remains uneven across countries\, regions\, and communities.   Many people still face barriers including cost\, lack of trained specialists\, long waiting times\, stigma\, and limited access to services \nLinks:\nWorld Brain Day

SUMMARY:Global status report on cancer 2026: the future we choose together - publication
DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organization (WHO) ‘Global status report on cancer 2026: the future we choose together‘ provides a comprehensive assessment of the global burden of cancer\, progress in cancer prevention and control\, and the systemic challenges that continue to limit equitable outcomes. \nPresenting new data on the burden of disease\, the capacity of health systems to respond\, and the lived experiences of people affected by cancer\, the report examines trends in incidence\, mortality\, survival\, risk factors and health system performance\, as well as the human\, social and economic consequences of cancer. It reviews implementation across the cancer continuum\, including prevention\, early detection\, diagnosis\, treatment\, palliative care and survivorship\, highlighting persistent disparities between and within countries and the gap between ambition and action. The report analyses the factors that drive progress and those that impede effective implementation\, emphasizing the importance of integrated\, people-centred approaches\, universal health coverage\, robust monitoring systems and meaningful engagement of affected communities. It highlights the coexistence of scientific advances and persistent inequities in who benefits from them and proposes a framework for future action based on three strategic shifts – better capabilities\, better protections and better value. Seven recommendations guide governments\, international organizations and other stakeholders in strengthening cancer control and advancing more equitable outcomes worldwide. \nLinks:\nGlobal status report on cancer 2026: the future we choose together

SUMMARY:Wereld Zoönosen Dag / World Zoonoses Day 2026
\nLinks:\nWorld Zoonosis Day 6 July

SUMMARY:Parkinson-PEST: protocol for a case–control study on environmental risk factors and Parkinson’s disease - publication
DESCRIPTION:Growing evidence suggests that a part of the burden of Parkinson’s disease (PD) can be explained by  exposure to environmental factors\, including pesticides\, heavy metals\, solvents\, and air pollution. \nHowever\, several questions remain unanswered\, pertaining to the associations with PD of  environmental factors that are still in use today; the added risks of co-exposure to multiple environmental factors and gene–environment interactions. Additional questions remain on the relevant time window\, duration\, and level of environmental exposures in relation to PD risk.  Furthermore\, it is unclear whether these exposures are associated with clinical progression of PD. PD-PEST (Parkinson’s Disease–Preventing Emergence of Symptoms by environmental Toxicants) is a nationwide hospital-based case–control study conducted in the Netherlands. The study population consists of 1500 persons with a recent PD diagnosis and 3000 age- and sex-matched controls. Participants will be recruited from four regions across the Netherlands to ensure a representative geographical distribution in terms of urbanisation\, industry\, and agricultural activity. Cases must have a PD diagnosis\, established by a neurologist in the Netherlands according to standard diagnostic criteria. Controls are outpatients with a different neurological condition that is unlikely to be associated with the environmental factors of interest or the risk of PD. The researhers will collect detailed information on historical and current environmental exposures at an individual level. This includes occupational and residential histories (via questionnaires and nationwide registries) and measurements (blood\, saliva\, faeces\, hair\, and via silicone wristbands). Based on these multimodal data\, the scientists will estimate participants’ individual lifetime exposure to environmental factors. Then\, they examine the associations between these exposures and the risk of PD. In addition\, they will assess longitudinal associations between exposures and clinical progression of individuals with PD over 36 months. Analyses will be adjusted for possible confounders and multiple hypothesis testing.

SUMMARY:Wereld Sclerodermie Dag / World Scleroderma Day 2026
\nLinks:\nWorld Scleroderma day

SUMMARY:Day of Deafblindness 2026
DESCRIPTION:The UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/79/294\, proclaiming 27 June of each year the International Day of Deafblindness. \nThis day commemorates the birth of renowned author Helen Keller (1880 – 1968)\, one of the most iconic figures in the deafblindness community. Deafblindness is a combined vision and hearing impairment of such severity that it is hard for the impaired senses to compensate for each other\, and is thus a distinct disability with its own specific challenges\, barriers and requirements for support and inclusion\, different from those provided to individuals\, who are solely deaf or blind. Deafblind persons face barriers owing to deafblindness not being treated and/or recognized as a distinct disability\, further leading to invisibility in statistics\, policies and programmes\, and therefore impeding access to services. Professional deafblind interpreters and interpreter-guides are critical in ensuring access to information\, communication\, services and fundamental rights\, as well as enabling individuals with deafblindness to live independently and be included in the community. \nLinks:\nDay of Deafblindness

SUMMARY:#WorldDrugDay Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking / World Drug Report - publication 2026
DESCRIPTION:By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987\, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. \nSupported each year by individuals\, communities\, and various organizations all over the world\, this global observance aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society. Global drug use and the number of drugs on the market have been increasing in the past decades. The century-long dominance of heroin in illicit global opioid markets is increasingly being challenged by changes in the illegal supply of opioids. Production\, seizures and use of cocaine continue to rise\, while low costs of manufacture and reduced risks of detection of synthetic drugs are contributing to their increase on illicit drug markets. Drug trafficking groups are seeking out technological innovation to target new audiences and ensure that drugs increasingly reach their users and help boost their billion-dollar businesses. Illicit drug markets have always been adapting\, and organized crime has always been looking to exploit gaps in governance and regulation. In response to these challenges\, this year’s campaign will showcase how the international community\, local and national governments\, civil society and the public is working together on innovative responses to reduce demand for and supply of illicit drugs and thus mitigate threats. Every year\, UNODC issues the World Drug Report\, full of key statistics and factual data obtained through official sources\, a science-based approach and research. UNODC continues to provide facts and practical solutions to address the current world drug problem and remains committed to attaining health for all. Health and justice sectors are under pressure and access to services and support is obstructed when we can least afford it. \nLinks:\nDay Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking \nWorld drug problem: persisting issues\, new challenges\, innovative responses

SUMMARY:Wereld Vitiligo Dag / World Vitiligo Day 2026
\nLinks:\nWorld Vitiligo Day \n25june

SUMMARY:World Kidney Cancer Day / Wereld Nierkanker Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Kidney Cancer Day is celebrated around the world every year on the third Thursday of June by patients\, carers\, healthcare professionals and local organisations. \nSince it was established in 2017\, it is a day dedicated to raising awareness of the local and global impact of kidney cancer\, educating people about the disease\, and making a difference in the lives of people affected by kidney cancer. World Kidney Cancer Day (WKCD) 2026 will be on 18 June\, marking the 10th year of raising awareness for kidney cancer worldwide. The 2026 theme is ‘Kidney Cancer and Emotional Wellbeing‘. Results from findings of the 2025 Global Patient Survey on Kidney Cancer show that 85% of kidney cancer patients experience emotional challenges\, yet many never raise these issues with their care team. The 2026 WKCD campaign will aim to raise awareness and also help empower patients to seek the support they need. \nLinks:\nWorld Kidney Cancer Day

SUMMARY:#WorldDengueDay Wereld Knokkelkoorts Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:Building on a rapidly growing global consensus\, in 2018 the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) started a worldwide dengue awareness campaign\, which included calling on the UN and WHO to designate a World Dengue Day. \nIts petition for a World Dengue Day has to date garnered over 26\,500 signatures\, endorsed by a growing and global collective of patients\, policy makers\, researchers\, professionals and advocates from over 110 countries\, who share the clear goal of reducing the burden of dengue around the world. In addition\, ISNTD also convened an international and multi-sectoral Dengue Advisory Group\, comprised of partners from Ministries of Health\, research and academia\, NGOs and civic society\, to guide this campaign. Such a move is not without precedent. On 15 June 2011\, ASEAN Health Ministers first declared that day — and each subsequent 15 June — ASEAN Dengue Day. This important annual event allows ASEAN members\, in coordination with WHO\, to consolidate dengue prevention and control measures. \nThe World Dengue Day campaign is aiming to achieve the same – on an international scale given the rapidly growing global threat of dengue. Growing population densities\, unplanned urban development\, poor water storage and unsatisfactory sanitary conditions are all common factors that contribute to the worsening burden of this mosquito-borne disease – not just for ASEAN\, but for many countries around the world. The disease has significant impact on the socio-economic status of every country. Tackling dengue is everyone’s concern. ISNTD-ADVA World Dengue Day Forum – Cross Sector Synergies marks a day that all governments\, civil societies\, public and private sectors\, schools\, universities and citizens\, can devote to dengue awareness-raising actions. Additionally\, the Forum will give countries around the world a platform to share their strategies for increasing public awareness of dengue\, mobilize resources for its prevention and control\, and demonstrate their commitment to tackling dengue. \nLinks:\nWorld Dengue Day

SUMMARY:World Blood Donor Day / Wereldbloeddonordag 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is celebrated every year by people around the world on June 14\, it is celebrated on the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner on June 14\, 1868\, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system. \nWBDD was organised for the first time in 2005\, by a joint initiative of World Health Organisation\, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products\, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary\, life-saving gifts of blood. Transfusion of blood and blood products helps and save millions of lives every year. It can help patients who suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with higher quality of life\, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential\, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care. Access to safe and sufficient blood and blood products can help reduce rates of death and disability due to severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth. In many countries\, there is not an adequate supply of safe blood\, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available\, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors. The WHO’s goal is for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020. In 2014\, 60 countries have their national blood supplies based on 99-100% voluntary unpaid blood donations\, with 73 countries still largely dependent on family and paid donors. \n2025 theme: Give blood\, give hope: together we save lives. The WHO honors hope\, the kind you give with every drop of blood. Because millions of patients around the world rely on blood transfusions every year\, hope flows through every donation. \nLinks:\nWorld Blood Donor Day \nWereld Bloeddonordag

SUMMARY:#AlbinismDay Albinism Awareness Day / Albinisme Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:Albinism is a rare\, non-contagious\, genetically inherited difference present at birth\, congenital absence of melanin in an animal or plant resulting in white hair\, feathers\, scales and skin and reddish pink or blue eyes. \nIn almost all types of albinism\, both parents must carry the gene for it to be passed on\, even if they do not have albinism themselves. The condition is found in both sexes regardless of ethnicity and in all countries of the world. Albinism results in a lack of pigmentation (melanin) in the hair\, skin and eyes\, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light. As a result\, almost all people with albinism are visually impaired and are prone to developing skin cancer. There is no cure for the absence of melanin that is central to albinism. While numbers vary\, it is estimated that in North America and Europe 1 in every 17\,000 to 20\,000 people have some form of albinism. The condition is much more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa\, with estimates of 1 in 1\,400 people being affected in Tanzania  and prevalence as high as 1 in 1\,000 reported for select populations in Zimbabwe and for other specific ethnic groups in Southern Africa. \nThe lack of melanin means persons with albinism are highly vulnerable to developing skin cancer. In some countries\, a majority of persons with albinism die from skin cancer between 30 and 40 years of age. Skin cancer is highly preventable when persons with albinism enjoy their right to health. This includes access to regular health checks\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing. In a significant number of countries\, these life-saving means are unavailable or inaccessible to them. Consequently\, in the realm of development measures\, persons with albinism have been and are among those “left furthest behind.” Therefore\, they ought to be targeted for human rights interventions in the manner envisioned by the Sustainable Development Goals. \nDue to a lack of melanin in the skin and eyes\, persons with albinism often have permanent visual impairment. They also face discrimination due to their skin colour; as such\, they are often subject to multiple and intersecting discrimination on the grounds of both disability and colour. People with albinism face multiple forms of discrimination worldwide. Albinism is still profoundly misunderstood\, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition\, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion. This leads to various forms of stigma and discrimination. \nIn some communities\, erroneous beliefs and myths\, heavily influenced by superstition\, put the security and lives of persons with albinism at constant risk. These beliefs and myths are centuries old and are present in cultural attitudes and practices around the world. While it has been reported that persons with albinism globally face discrimination and stigma\, information on cases of physical attacks against persons with albinism is mainly available from countries in Africa. \nPersons with albinism face more severe forms of discrimination and violence in those regions\, where the majority of the general population are relatively dark-skinned. In other words\, a greater degree of contrast in pigmentation often gives rise to a greater degree of discrimination. That appears to be the case in some sub-Saharan African countries where albinism is shrouded in myth and dangerous and erroneous beliefs. The figures on violations against persons with albinism are telling. There have been hundreds of cases of attacks and killings of persons with albinism reported in 28 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the past decade. The attacks have several root causes including ignorance\, longstanding stigma\, poverty and most abhorrently\, harmful practices emanating from manifestation of beliefs in witchcraft. The alarming reality is that these horrendous practices continue today. \nThe manner in which discrimination faced by persons with albinism manifests itself\, and its severity\, vary from region to region. In the western world\, including North America\, Europe and Australia\, discrimination often consists of name-calling\, persistent teasing and bullying of children with albinism. Little information is available from other regions such as Asia\, South America and the Pacific etc. However\, some reports indicate that in China and other Asian countries\, children with albinism face abandonment and rejection by their families. \nLinks:\nAlbinism Awareness Day \nAttacks against people with albinism are hate crimes \nNot ghosts but human beings

SUMMARY:Robert Koch Colloquium 2026 "Navigating Public Health in Times of Global Uncertainties"
DESCRIPTION:The Robert Koch Colloquium (RKC) is an annual interdisciplinary lecture series. It focuses each year on one contemporary and innovative public health topic\, such as Burden of Disease (2019)\, Public Health Surveillance (2021)\, Climate Change and Public Health (2022)\, Social Inequities in Health (2023)\, Mobility and Public Health (2024) and Public Health Data (2025). \nEach year\, the Robert Koch Institute invites leading international experts to present and discuss their area of work at the Robert Koch Colloquium. This year’s colloquium topic was “Navigating Public Health in times of Global uncertainties”. Over two days\, a series of interactive lectures addressed topics related to the impact of conflicts on Public Health systems\, global sharing of health data in times of uncertainty\, the current shifts in health governance at local\, national and international level as well as the citizens’ trust in Public Health science. The lectures were  complemented by a panel discussion. \nThe Robert Koch Colloquium 2026 addressed an urgent challenge of today’s public health landscape: how to adapt to global uncertainties and political fragmentation. Armed conflicts\, political and economic instability\, climate-related pressures\, and fluctuating public trust increasingly shape the contexts in which public health systems operate\, challenging established modes-of-action and international cooperation. In response to these dynamics\, the RKC 2026 brought together leading international experts to reflect on how public health can respond and evolve under conditions of crisis and transformation. Over two days\, the programme examined public health action in times of crisis. We explored\n1) the health impacts of armed conflict on population health including mental health and non-communicable diseases.\n2) widening inequalities in times of global polycrisis.\n3) the need for a resilient global health architecture during geopolitical shifts in power and interests. The colloquium also shed light on advancing health data justice and the development of resilient cross-border data-sharing frameworks that can withstand political and financial pressures. Particular attention was paid to the current challenge of building and sustaining trust in evidence-based public health science in times of widespread misinformation. The colloquium concluded with a panel discussion titled “Rethinking Global Public Health: From Crisis Response to Long-term Sustainability”\, synthesizing key insights and outlining visions towards a more resilient and equitable public health future. By combining scientific perspectives with policy-oriented insights\, the RKC 2026 aimed to foster interdisciplinary dialogue across sectors and governance levels. \nLinks:\nRobert Koch Colloquium 2026 “Navigating Public Health in Times of Global Uncertainties”

SUMMARY:Europese Tourettedag 2026
\nLinks:\nEuropese Tourettedag \nNext stop? #Ljubljana2026

SUMMARY:#ad6 Alpe d’HuZes 2026

SUMMARY:#WorldClubfootDay / Wereld Klompvoet Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:Clubfoot\, or talipes equinovarus\, is a treatable birth defect where one or both feet are rotated inward and downward that affects approximately 150\,000-200\,000 children each year. \nThe affected foot and leg may be smaller in size compared to the other. Approximately 50% of cases of clubfoot affect both feet. Most of the time\, it is not associated with other problems. Without treatment\, the foot remains deformed\, and people walk on the sides of their feet. This may lead to pain and difficulty walking. The exact cause is usually not identified. Both genetic and environmental factors are believed to be involved. If one identical twin is affected\, there is a 33% chance the other one will be as well. The underlying mechanism involves disruption of the muscles or connective tissue of the lower leg\, leading to joint contracture. Other abnormalities are associated 20% of the time\, with the most common being distal arthrogryposis and myelomeningocele. The diagnosis may be made at birth by examination or before birth during an ultrasound exam. \nInitial treatment is most often with the Ponseti method. This involves moving the foot into an improved position followed by casting\, which is repeated at weekly intervals. Once the inward bending is improved\, the Achilles tendon is often cut\, and braces are worn until the age of four. Initially\, the brace is worn nearly continuously and then just at night. In about 20% of cases\, further surgery is required. Treatment can be carried out by a range of healthcare providers and can generally be achieved in the developing world with few resources. Clubfoot occurs in 1 to 4 of every 1\,000 live births\, making it one of the most common birth defects affecting the legs. About 80% of cases occur in developing countries where there is limited access to care. Clubfoot is more common in firstborn children and males. It is more common among Māori people\, and less common among Chinese people. \nLinks:\nWorld Clubfoot Day
