DESCRIPTION:High-resolution environmental model of pesticide risk across Peru\, designed to support spatial cancer epidemiology\, click on picture to enlarge\nThe scientific study ‘Mapping pesticide mixtures to cancer risk at the country scale with spatial exposomics‘ reveals a strong link between exposure to agricultural pesticides in the environment and the risk of developing cancer. \nBy combining environmental data\, a nationwide cancer registry\, and biological analyses\, researchers from the IRD\, the Institut Pasteur\, the University of Toulouse\, and the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN) in Peru have shed new light on the role of pesticide exposure in the development of certain cancers. Pesticides are widely present in food\, water\, and the environment\, often in the form of complex mixtures. Until now\, it has been difficult to accurately assess their effects on human health\, as most studies focus on isolated substances and experimental models that are far removed from real-world exposure conditions. DESCRIPTION:In 2024 is in Nederland 8\,1 miljoen kilo bestrijdingsmiddelen verkocht\, 8 procent meer dan een jaar eerder\, blijkt uit de analyse ‘Sterke toename in verkoop van PFAS-bestrijdingsmiddelen geven zorgen om drinkwatervoorziening‘ van Natuur & Milieu. \nVooral middelen tegen schimmels gingen fors vaker over de toonbank: de afzet steeg met 42 procent. Middelen tegen onkruid en insecten lieten juist een daling zien. De cijfers komen uit het Compendium voor de Leefomgeving en laten zien hoe sterk het middelengebruik kan schommelen. 2024 was een extreem nat jaar. Door de hoge neerslag vormen schimmelziektes een groter risico voor gewassen. Telers grepen vaker naar chemische middelen om hun gewassen te beschermen. Dat roept zorgen op\, want door klimaatverandering zullen dit soort weersextremen vaker voorkomen. Daarom is het nodig dat biologische en andere robuuste teeltwijzen worden gestimuleerd. PFAS-bestrijdingsmiddelen kunnen afbreken in TFA (trifluorazijnzuur). Uit Deens onderzoek blijkt dat TFA schadelijk kan zijn voor de menselijke voortplanting en gemakkelijk in het grondwater terechtkomt. Bovendien is de stof nauwelijks te verwijderen door  waterzuiveringsinstallaties. Dat maakt TFA extra problematisch voor onze drinkwatervoorziening. In Denemarken was dit reden om zes PFAS stoffen te verbieden in de landbouw. In Nederland zijn deze middelen nog toegestaan. Sterker nog: de afzet ervan is in 2024 met 150 procent gestegen. Deze forse stijging komt vooral door fluazinam. Van deze stof werd in 2024 ruim 215.000 kilo verkocht. In de jaren daarvoor lag dat rond de 40.000 kilo. Ook fluopyram en fluopicolide lieten een sterke toename zien. SUMMARY:Parkinson-PEST: protocol for a case–control study on environmental risk factors and Parkinson’s disease - publication
DESCRIPTION:Growing evidence suggests that a part of the burden of Parkinson’s disease (PD) can be explained by  exposure to environmental factors\, including pesticides\, heavy metals\, solvents\, and air pollution. \nHowever\, several questions remain unanswered\, pertaining to the associations with PD of  environmental factors that are still in use today; the added risks of co-exposure to multiple environmental factors and gene–environment interactions. Additional questions remain on the relevant time window\, duration\, and level of environmental exposures in relation to PD risk.  Furthermore\, it is unclear whether these exposures are associated with clinical progression of PD. PD-PEST (Parkinson’s Disease–Preventing Emergence of Symptoms by environmental Toxicants) is a nationwide hospital-based case–control study conducted in the Netherlands. The study population consists of 1500 persons with a recent PD diagnosis and 3000 age- and sex-matched controls. Participants will be recruited from four regions across the Netherlands to ensure a representative geographical distribution in terms of urbanisation\, industry\, and agricultural activity. Cases must have a PD diagnosis\, established by a neurologist in the Netherlands according to standard diagnostic criteria. Controls are outpatients with a different neurological condition that is unlikely to be associated with the environmental factors of interest or the risk of PD. The researhers will collect detailed information on historical and current environmental exposures at an individual level. This includes occupational and residential histories (via questionnaires and nationwide registries) and measurements (blood\, saliva\, faeces\, hair\, and via silicone wristbands). Based on these multimodal data\, the scientists will estimate participants’ individual lifetime exposure to environmental factors. Then\, they examine the associations between these exposures and the risk of PD. In addition\, they will assess longitudinal associations between exposures and clinical progression of individuals with PD over 36 months.
