SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). Scholars of ESG say that their research is instrumental in addressing governance-related needs of UNDOS. \nFirst\, it can identify salient frames for ocean problems that trigger policy action. \nSecond\, it can inform stakeholder involvement by mapping powerful and marginalized interests and suggesting pathways towards more inclusive participation. \nThird\, it can support viable and effective ocean solutions based on insights into political support coalitions and governance design. \nMainstreaming of governance research into ocean science has also been recommended: The ESG community can facilitate this mainstreaming by enhancing knowledge cumulation around ocean issues within the network; engaging more strongly in the production of actionable and action-oriented knowledge; and seeking integration into inter- and transdisciplinary ocean research. Sub-topics where ESG with regards to ocean governance can be applied are for example governance issues around deep sea mining\, ocean acidification\, marine biodiversity. \nLinks:\nUN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development \n2025 UN Ocean Conference \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities \n#30thSessionCouncil #DeepSeabed #TheArea #UNCLOS 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority Part I (TV ISA Web TV) \nVPRO #Tegenlicht : de strijd om de diepzee (TV internet / NPO 2) \nLive session with Free Range Ocean

SUMMARY:Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. This new Decade of Action provides an opportunity for harnessing the successes and lessons of previous years and building upon them to save more lives. \nLinks:\nDecade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 \n#WDoR2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2023

SUMMARY:#WDDW World Day for Decent Work / Werelddag voor Fatsoenlijk Werk 2026
DESCRIPTION:October 7\, is the World Day for Decent Work\, during that day trade unions\, union federations and other workers associations develop their actions to promote the idea of Decent Work. \nActions vary from street demonstrations to music events or conferences held in many countries. The United Nations Economic and Social Council has given a General Comment that defines “decent work” and requires satisfaction of Article 7 of the International Covenant on Economic\, Social and Cultural Rights: decent work is employment that “respects the fundamental rights of the human person as well as the rights of workers in terms of conditions of work safety and remuneration. … respect for the physical and mental integrity of the worker in the exercise of his/her employment. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO)\, decent work involves opportunities for work that are productive and deliver a fair income\, security in the workplace and social protection for families\, better prospects for personal development and social integration\, freedom for people to express their concerns\, organize and participate in the decisions that affect their lives and equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men. The ILO is developing an agenda for the community of work\, represented by its tripartite constituents\, to mobilize their considerable resources to create those opportunities and to help reduce and eradicate poverty. The ILO Decent Work Agenda is the balanced and integrated programmatic approach to pursue the objectives of full and productive employment and decent work for all at global\, regional\, national\, sectoral and local levels. It has four pillars: standards and rights at work\, employment creation and enterprise development\, social protection and social dialogue.\nThe Sustainable Development Goals also proclaims decent work for sustainable economic growth. \nLinks:\nWorld Day for Decent Work: For democracy that delivers decent work

SUMMARY:World Cotton Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Cotton is one of the most common fabrics in our wardrobes: it is comfortable\, hypoallergenic\, breathable and durable. \nBut cotton represents so much more than just a commodity. This natural fabric is a life-changing product worldwide that sustains 32 million growers (almost half of them women) and benefits over 100 million families across 80 countries in 5 continents. This means that\, behind any cotton clothing\, following back its trade chain\, there is a personal story. It is true that cotton is really important to developed economies\, but for least-developed and developing countries\, it is a safety-net. Cotton is a major source of livelihoods and incomes for many rural smallholders and laborers\, including women\, providing employment and income to some of the poorest rural areas in the world. On this official UN World Cotton Day\, the United Nations wants to raise visibility of the cotton sector and awareness of the critical role that it plays in economic development\, international trade and poverty alleviation. The observance also aims to highlight the importance of sustained\, inclusive and sustainable economic growth\, full and productive employment and decent work for all. \nLinks:\nWorld Cotton Day

SUMMARY:#ZeroHunger Wereldvoedseldag / #WorldFoodDay 2026
Nourish tomorrow‘. \nLinks:\nWorld Food Day \nIs organic farming better for the environment than conventional farming?

SUMMARY:Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2026
DESCRIPTION:Global Media and Information Literacy Week is an annual event observed from 24th to 31st October to raise awareness and celebrate the progress achieved towards Media and Information Literacy for all. \nDuring Global Media and Information Literacy Week\, stakeholders around the world organize events and UNESCO co-hosts with a Member State the global conference gathering the Media and Information Literacy community. In 2021\, the UN General Assembly decided to commemorate Global Media and Information Literacy Week\, to emphasize the need for factual\, timely\, targeted\, clear\, accessible\, multilingual and science-based information. The resolution acknowledges that the significant digital divide and data disparities between countries and within them\, can be addressed in part by enhancing people’s competencies to seek\, receive and share information in the digital realm. “>Media and Information Literacy encompasses various competencies that enable individuals and groups to navigate today’s information and communications environment. It covers a large spectrum of knowledge\, skills\, attitudes and values to better search\, access\, critically evaluate\, use and contribute to information and media content.Thereby\, Media and Information Literacy enables the purposeful and creative use of digital technology and empowers all users through enhancing their knowledge of their online and digital rights\, as well of the ethical issues surrounding access to and use of information. Media and information literate citizens are equipped to engage more effectively in dialogue\, freedom of expression\, access to information\, gender equality\, diversity\, peace\, and sustainable development. Media and Information Literacy is key to address the challenges of the 21st century including the proliferation of mis- and disinformation and hate speech\, the decline of trust in media and the transformative impact of digital innovations notably Artificial Intelligence. \nLinks:\nGlobal Media and Information Literacy Week
