SUMMARY:#CoopsDay Day of Cooperatives 2026
DESCRIPTION:On July 6\, cooperatives around the world will celebrate the Day of Cooperatives. \nCo-operatives have been acknowledged as associations and enterprises through which citizens can effectively improve their lives while contributing to the economic\, social\, cultural and political advancement of their community and nation. The co-operative movement has been also recognized as a distinct and major stakeholder in both national and international affairs. Co-operatives’ open membership model affords access to wealth creation and poverty elimination. This results from the co-operative principle of members’ economic participation: ‘Members contribute equitably to\, and democratically control\, the capital of their co-operative.’ Because co-operatives are people-centred\, not capital-centred \, they do not perpetuate\, nor accelerate capital concentration and they distribute wealth in a more fair way. Co-operatives also foster external equality. As they are community-based\, they are committed to the sustainable development of their communities – environmentally\, socially and economically. This commitment can be seen in their support for community activities\, local sourcing of supplies to benefit the local economy\, and in decision-making that considers the impact on their communities. Despite their local community focus\, co-operatives also aspire to bring the benefits of their economic and social model to all people in the world. Globalization should be governed by a set of values such as those of the co-operative movement; otherwise\, it creates more inequality and excesses that render it unsustainable. The cooperative movement is highly democratic\, locally autonomous\, but internationally integrated\, and a form of organization of associations and enterprises whereby citizens themselves rely on self-help and their own responsibility to meet goals that include not only economic\, but also social and environmental objectives\, such as overcoming poverty\, securing productive employment and encouraging social integration. \nThe 2026 theme of the United Nations International Day of Cooperatives\, “Cooperatives for a peaceful world”\, affirms the contribution of cooperative enterprises to social justice\, inclusion and solidarity. It recognizes cooperatives as people-centered institutions that can help build trust\, strengthen social cohesion and bring communities together around shared needs and aspirations. In a world marked by conflict\, inequality\, social fragmentation and declining trust\, the theme recalls that peace is more than the absence of violence: it also requires inclusion\, fairness\, dialogue and economic security. Announced by the International Cooperative Alliance\, this year’s theme also reflects the capacity of the cooperative model to serve as a bridge between people and communities. Through democratic ownership\, open membership and collective responsibility\, cooperatives create spaces in which people can participate\, be heard and work together across social and economic divides. Rooted in communities and connected through an international movement\, they support livelihoods\, decent work\, poverty reduction\, social integration and peacebuilding among peoples\, communities and nations. \nLinks:\nDay of Cooperatives

SUMMARY:#WeAreTheTropics #TropicsDay Day of the Tropics / Dag van de Tropen 2026
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of the Tropics celebrates the extraordinary diversity of the tropics while highlighting unique challenges and opportunities nations of the Tropics face\, it provides an opportunity to take stock of progress across the tropics\, to share tropical stories and expertise and to acknowledge the diversity and potential of the region. \nThe Tropics are a region of the Earth\, roughly defined as the area between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. Although topography and other factors contribute to climatic variation\, tropical locations are typically warm and experience little seasonal change in day-to-day temperature. An important feature of the Tropics is the prevalence of rain in the moist inner regions near the equator\, and that the seasonality of rainfall increases with the distance from the equator. The tropical region faces several challenges such as climate change\, deforestation\, logging\, urbanisation and demographic changes. Tropical nations have made significant progress but face a variety of challenges that demand focused attention across a range of development indicators and data in order to achieve sustainable development. \n\nBy 2050\, the region will host most of the world’s people and two-thirds of its children.\nConsistent with the higher levels of poverty\, more people experience undernourishment in the Tropics than in the rest of the world.\nThe proportion of the urban population living in slum conditions is higher in the Tropics than in the rest of the World.\n\nThe inaugural State of the Tropics Report was launched on 29 June 2014\, as the culmination of a collaboration between twelve leading tropical research institutions. The report offers a unique perspective on this increasingly important region. Marking the anniversary of the report’s launch the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/267 in 2016\, which declared that 29 June of each year is to be observed as the International Day of the Tropics. The international Day of the Tropics was designated to raise awareness to the specific challenges faced by tropical areas\, the far-reaching implications of the issues affecting the world’s tropical zone and the need\, at all levels\, to raise awareness and to underline the important role that countries in the tropics will play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. \nLinks:\nDay of the Tropics

SUMMARY:Day of Deafblindness 2026
DESCRIPTION:The UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/79/294\, proclaiming 27 June of each year the International Day of Deafblindness. \nThis day commemorates the birth of renowned author Helen Keller (1880 – 1968)\, one of the most iconic figures in the deafblindness community. Deafblindness is a combined vision and hearing impairment of such severity that it is hard for the impaired senses to compensate for each other\, and is thus a distinct disability with its own specific challenges\, barriers and requirements for support and inclusion\, different from those provided to individuals\, who are solely deaf or blind. Deafblind persons face barriers owing to deafblindness not being treated and/or recognized as a distinct disability\, further leading to invisibility in statistics\, policies and programmes\, and therefore impeding access to services. Professional deafblind interpreters and interpreter-guides are critical in ensuring access to information\, communication\, services and fundamental rights\, as well as enabling individuals with deafblindness to live independently and be included in the community. \nLinks:\nDay of Deafblindness

SUMMARY:#WorldDrugDay Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking / World Drug Report - publication 2026
DESCRIPTION:By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987\, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. \nSupported each year by individuals\, communities\, and various organizations all over the world\, this global observance aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society. Global drug use and the number of drugs on the market have been increasing in the past decades. The century-long dominance of heroin in illicit global opioid markets is increasingly being challenged by changes in the illegal supply of opioids. Production\, seizures and use of cocaine continue to rise\, while low costs of manufacture and reduced risks of detection of synthetic drugs are contributing to their increase on illicit drug markets. Drug trafficking groups are seeking out technological innovation to target new audiences and ensure that drugs increasingly reach their users and help boost their billion-dollar businesses. Illicit drug markets have always been adapting\, and organized crime has always been looking to exploit gaps in governance and regulation. In response to these challenges\, this year’s campaign will showcase how the international community\, local and national governments\, civil society and the public is working together on innovative responses to reduce demand for and supply of illicit drugs and thus mitigate threats. Every year\, UNODC issues the World Drug Report\, full of key statistics and factual data obtained through official sources\, a science-based approach and research. UNODC continues to provide facts and practical solutions to address the current world drug problem and remains committed to attaining health for all. Health and justice sectors are under pressure and access to services and support is obstructed when we can least afford it. \nLinks:\nDay Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking \nWorld drug problem: persisting issues\, new challenges\, innovative responses

SUMMARY:World Day in Support of Victims of Torture / Werelddag voor steun aan slachtoffers van foltering 2026
DESCRIPTION:Torture seeks to annihilate the victim’s personality and denies the inherent dignity of the human being.\n\nDespite the absolute prohibition of torture under international law\, torture persist in all regions of the world. Concerns about protecting national security and borders are increasingly used to allow torture and other forms of cruel\, degrading and inhuman treatment. Its pervasive consequences often go beyond the isolated act on an individual; and can be transmitted through generations and lead to cycles of violence. The United Nations has condemned torture from the outset as one of the vilest acts perpetrated by human beings on their fellow human beings. Torture is a crime under international law. According to all relevant instruments\, it is absolutely prohibited and cannot be justified under any circumstances. This prohibition forms part of customary international law\, which means that it is binding on every member of the international community\, regardless of whether a State has ratified international treaties in which torture is expressly prohibited. The systematic or widespread practice of torture constitutes a crime against humanity. On 12 December 1997\, by resolution 52/149\, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 26 June the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture\, with a view to the total eradication of torture and the effective functioning of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel\, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. 26 June is an opportunity to call on all stakeholders including UN Member States\, civil society and individuals everywhere to unite in support of the hundreds of thousands of people around the world who have been victims of torture and those who are still tortured today. \nLinks:\nDay in Support of Victims of Torture – 26 June\n \nInternational Day in Support of Victims of Torture\, 26 June \n26 June Virtual Brochure

SUMMARY:Dag van het Handvest van de Verenigde Naties 2026
\nLinks:\nHandvest

SUMMARY:Day for Countering Hate Speech / Dag voor het Tegengaan van Haatzaaien 2026
DESCRIPTION:In July 2021\, the UN General Assembly highlighted global concerns over “the exponential spread and proliferation of hate speech” around the world and adopted a resolution on “promoting inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech”. \nThe resolution recognizes the need to counter discrimination\, xenophobia and hate speech and calls on all relevant actors\, including States\, to increase their efforts to address this phenomenon\, in line with international human rights law. The resolution proclaimed 18 June as the International Day for Countering Hate Speech\, building on the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech launched on 18 June 2019. To observe the Day\, the United Nations invites governments\, international organizations\, civil society groups\, and individuals to hold events and initiatives promoting strategies to identify\, address and counter hate speech. This first UN system-wide initiative designed to tackle hate speech provides an essential framework for how the Organization can support and complement States’ efforts. Whether as Member States the private sector\, the media and internet corporations\, faith leaders\, educators\, actors of civil society\, those affected by hate speech\, youth\, or simply as an individual\, we all have the moral duty of speaking out firmly against instances of hate speech and play a crucial role to in countering this scourge. Since the spread of hateful rhetoric can be an early warning of violence – including atrocity crimes – limiting hate speech could contribute to mitigating its impact. Addressing hate speech remains a key priority within the United Nations system\, through the implementation of the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech. Subsequently\, General Assembly resolution A/RES/79/316 adopted in June 2025 “encourages Member States to consider […] initiatives that identify areas for practical action in all sectors and levels of society for the promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue\, tolerance\, understanding and cooperation” as a tool to counter hate speech. \nThe UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech underscores the importance of partnerships in the fight against hate speech. Indeed\, as hate speech affects the whole society\, a whole-of-society approach is necessary to address this phenomenon.  Relatedly\, the UN Strategy stresses the need to raise awareness about respect for human rights\, non-discrimination\, coexistence\, acceptance and respect for diversity and understanding of other cultures and religions\, as well as the promotion of intercultural\, interfaith and interreligious dialogue. It urges for the use of advocacy to highlight hate speech trends of concern as well as to express sympathy and support to targeted individuals or groups. This is most resonant in the current context of rising conflicts globally\, both in their frequency and intensity as well as in the ways in which hate speech is used to fuel them. To protect all those at risk of hate speech\, which can lead to incitement to violence\, there is an urgent need to further strengthen practical approaches and tools\, and scalable strategies to break the cycles of hate\, elevate  empathy\, and acceptance\, and respect for diversity as critical pillars in any society and reinforce the foundations of dialogue and understanding as instrumental to building peaceful and just societies. These practical approaches entail policies\, new technologies and innovative partnerships to advance and sustain efforts to not only address the root causes of hate speech but also mitigate its impact on societies and communities and to counter it. They consider the intersection of education\, media\, digital literacy\, monitoring\, data collection and identification of access points for interventions. In the current international landscape\, partnerships also remain essential in designing and implementing these practical tools and approaches for countering hate speech and other noxious narratives and contribute to a healthy information ecosystem. \nLinks:\nDay for Countering Hate Speech

SUMMARY:World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought / Werelddag tegen Woestijnvorming en Droogte 2026
DESCRIPTION:Desertification is the degradation of land in arid\, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas\, it is caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations. \nDesertification does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts. It occurs because dryland ecosystems\, which cover over one third of the world’s land area\, are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use. Poverty\, political instability\, deforestation\, overgrazing and bad irrigation practices can all undermine the productivity of the land. The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving\, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels. \nIn 2026\, Desertification and Drought Day put rangelands at the centre of global attention. Held under the theme “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.”\, this year’s observance calls for greater recognition of the economic\, ecological and cultural value of rangelands\, respect for their traditional stewards and stronger investment in restoring degraded rangelands. Rangelands are among the world’s most extensive yet most overlooked ecosystems. Covering more than half of the Earth’s land surface\, they play a vital role in food security\, water cycles\, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. They support the lives of around two billion people worldwide\, including many pastoralists and Indigenous Peoples whose knowledge and stewardship have sustained these landscapes for generations. This year’s event aligns with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists\, helping to underscore the need to raise awareness\, encourage responsible investment and strengthen policies that safeguard rangelands and pastoralist livelihoods. Up to half of the world’s rangelands are degraded or at risk\, with serious consequences for food and water security\, biodiversity\, climate resilience and rural livelihoods. Yet viable pathways for action already exist. Investing in sustainable land and water management\, improved drought preparedness and community-led restoration can help secure these landscapes and the people who depend on them. Now is the time to recognize the value of rangelands\, respect their traditional stewards and restore these landscapes for future generations. \nLinks:\nWorld Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

SUMMARY:#EndChildLabour World Day Against Child Labour / Wereld Dag tegen Kinderarbeid 2026
DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nThe World Day Against Child Labour\, which is held every year on June 12\, is an International Labour Organization (ILO)-sanctioned holiday first launched in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour\, it was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. \nThe ILO\, the United Nations body that regulates the world of work\, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. This day brings together governments\, local authorities\, civil society and international\, workers and employers organizations to point out the child labour problem and define the guidelines to help child labourers. According to ILO’s data\, hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education\, health\, leisure and basic freedoms\, violating this way their rights. Of these children\, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour. These worst forms of child labour include work in hazardous environments\, slavery\, or other forms of forced labour\, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution\, as well as involvement in armed conflict. \n2026 Theme: Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults. The 2026 World Day comes at a decisive moment. The 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour\, held in Marrakech\, reaffirmed the urgent need to accelerate action and translate commitments into concrete results. The Marrakech Global Framework for Action against Child Labour provides a concrete roadmap and indicators for tackling child labour through integrated responses that address root causes and protect every child’s rights. Under the slogan “Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults”\, the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour campaign calls for reinforced action on the policies that prevent child labour and withdrawn children from it:  quality education\, universal social protection\, decent work and adequate livelihoods for adults\, stronger laws and enforcement\, better data and monitoring systems\, and responsible action in agriculture and supply chains. This action is urgently needed. Despite progress\, 138 million children remain in child labour worldwide\, including nearly 54 million in hazardous work. On this World Day Against Child Labour\, raise the Red card to child labour. SUMMARY:Day of Play 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Day of Play\, observed on 11 June\, creates a unifying moment at global\, national\, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. \nIt signals a call for policies\, training\, and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings worldwide. Beyond mere recreation\, it is a universal language spoken by people of all ages\, transcending national\, cultural\, and socio-economic boundaries. This shared passion fosters a sense of community and national pride. It also fosters resilience\, creativity\, and innovation in individuals. For children in particular\, play helps build relationships and improves control\, overcome trauma\, and problem-solving. It helps children develop the cognitive\, physical\, creative\, social\, and emotional skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Restricting opportunities for play directly impedes a child’s well-being and development. In educational settings\, play-based learning has been recognized as an effective approach to engage students actively in the learning process. It helps make learning more enjoyable and relevant\, thereby enhancing motivation and retention of information. Moreover\, play is considered to have a positive impact on promoting tolerance\, resilience\, and facilitating social inclusion\, conflict prevention\, and peacebuilding. In recognition of this\, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has enshrined play as a fundamental right of every child under Article 31. The international day creates a unifying moment at global\, national\, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. It signals a call for policies\, training\, and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings worldwide. \nChildren learn best through play. Play creates powerful learning opportunities across all areas of development – intellectual\, social\, emotional and physical. Through play\, children learn to forge connections with others\, build a wide range of leadership skills\, develop resilience\, navigate relationships and social challenges as well as conquer their fears. When children play\, they feel safe. Children play to make sense of the world around them. More generally\, play provides a platform for children to express and develop imagination and creativity\, which are key skills critical for the technology-driven and innovative world we live in. Playful interactions contribute to the well-being and positive mental health of parents\, caregivers and children. When humanitarian crises turn a child’s world upside down\, it is in play that children can both find safety and respite from adverse experience while also being able to explore and process their experiences with the world. When children are driven from their homes by war\, conflict\, and displacement\, access to nurturing relationships with parents/caregivers and peers are critical buffers from the effects of violence\, distress and other adverse experiences. Play comforts and soothes children. To encourage playful interactions between parents/caregivers and children\, governments and other stakeholders need to create an enabling environment. 2026 Theme: ‘Protect Play\, Protect Childhood‘. Throughout June\, UNICEF will also be promoting expert tips and guidance for parents on everything from the science of play to fun activities for all the family. Recognizing that increasingly play happens online\, the agency is equipping parents with guides and explainers on how to help keep their children’s online experiences safe and positive. \nLinks:\nInternational Day of Play 11 June

SUMMARY:UNHCR Global Trends report 2025 - publication
DESCRIPTION:UNHCR’s Global Trends report presents key statistical trends and the latest official statistics on refugees\, asylum-seekers\, internally displaced and stateless people worldwide. \nThe Global Trends report\, published in June 2026\, provides key statistical trends on forced displacement. It includes the latest official statistics on refugees\, asylum-seekers\, internally displaced and stateless people\, as well as the number of refugees who have returned home. At the end of 2025\, there were 41.6 million refugees globally\, including refugees under UNHCR’s mandate\, people in a refugee-like situation\, other people in need of international protection and Palestine refugees under UNRWA’s mandate\, as well as 9 million asylum-seekers pending a decision on their asylum claims. In addition\, there were 68.7 million people displaced within their own country due to conflict or violence. The global number of refugees fell during 2025 with a decrease of 3 per cent compared to the end of 2024. This change reflects a sharp increase in the returns of refugees\, mostly to Afghanistan\, Syria and Sudan. The number of IDPs also decreased due to the returns of IDPs primarily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, Sudan and Syria. However\, many of the returns occurred under adverse circumstances and the reintegration conditions remain extremely challenging. One in every 70 people\, or 1.4 per cent of the entire world’s population\, is now forcibly displaced. \nLinks:\nUNHCR Global Trends report \nAgenda – Migratie- en asielpact / EU Pact on Migration and Asylum – inwerkingtreding \nRecordaantal vluchtelingen naar huis\, maar VN zeker niet in jubelstemming \nVoor het eerst in 10 jaar minder mensen op de vlucht wereldwijd

SUMMARY:#SaveOurOcean #WorldOceansDay / Wereld Oceanen Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Ocean Day (WOD) is an international day that takes place annually on June 8\, the concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. \n“World Oceans Day” was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008. The international day supports the implementation of worldwide Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fosters public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources. World Oceans Day is observed by all UN member states.World Oceans Day reminds every one of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our Planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean\, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean\, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans. Hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations\, in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global\, this year’s annual program will celebrate the wonders of the ocean as a source of life that supports humanity and all other organisms on Earth. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source\, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen\, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity\, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention\, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030. Even though all its benefits\, the ocean is now in need of support. With 90% of big fish populations depleted\, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed\, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life. “Reimagine”\, the theme of World Oceans Day 2026\, invites us to change the way we see and care for the ocean. For too long\, we have viewed it as something distant\, when in fact it is part of our daily lives: the air we breathe\, the food we eat\, and the climate balance that makes our existence possible. Let’s stop being mere beneficiaries of its resources and let’s become true guardians of its future. \nLinks:\nWorld Oceans Day \nWorld Oceans Day 8 June \nWereldoceaandagen \nWorld Oceans Day 2020 – YouTube afspeellijst \nWorld Whale Day / Wereld Walvisdag \nWorld Oceans Day / Wereld Oceanen Dag \n7 ocean mysteries scientists haven’t solved yet \n2022 UN Ocean Conference \n5 Actions You can Take to #SaveOurOcean \nSeascape: the state of our oceans \nZo ziet de industriële visserij eruit

SUMMARY:#WorldFoodSafetyDay 2026
DESCRIPTION:Food safety is the absence — or safe\, acceptable levels — of hazards in food that may harm the health of consumers. \nFood-borne hazards can be microbiological\, chemical or physical in nature and are often invisible to the plain eye: bacteria\, viruses\, or pesticide residues are some examples. Food safety has a critical role in assuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain – from production to harvest\, processing\, storage\, distribution\, all the way to preparation and consumption. With an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne illnesses annually\, unsafe food is a threat to human health and economies\, disproportionally affecting vulnerable and marginalized people\, especially women and children\, populations affected by conflict\, and migrants. An estimated three million people around the world — in developed and developing countries — die every year from food and waterborne disease. Food is the starting point for our energy\, our health and our well-being. We often take for granted that it is safe\, but in an increasingly complex and interconnected world where food value chains are growing longer\, standards and regulations are that much more important in keeping us safe. Food safety is key to achieving several of the Sustainable Development Goals and World Food Safety Day brings it into the spotlight\, to help prevent\, detect and manage foodborne risks. Safe food contributes to economic prosperity\, boosting agriculture\, market access\, tourism and sustainable development. \n\nGoal 2 — There is no food security without food safety. Ending hunger is about all people having access to safe\, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.\nGoal 3 — Food safety has a direct impact on people’s health and nutritional intake. Foodborne diseases are preventable.\nGoal 12 — When countries strengthen their regulatory\, scientific and technological capacities to ensure that food is safe and of the expected quality throughout the food chain\, they move towards more sustainable patterns of food production and consumption.\nGoal 17 — A globalized world with annual food exports currently in excess of USD 1.6 trillion and complex food systems demands international cooperation across sectors to ensure food is safe. Food safety is a shared responsibility among governments\, food industries\, producers and consumers.\n\nLinks:\nWorld Food Safety Day \n#ZeroHunger Wereldvoedseldag / #WorldFoodDay

SUMMARY:#FightIUUfishing Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing / Dag voor de Strijd tegen Illegale Visserij 2026
DESCRIPTION:Fisheries provide a vital source of food\, employment\, recreation\, trade and economic well-being for people throughout the world. \nIn 2015\, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean of the FAO proposed that an initiative be launched to declare an International Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. Following extensive consultations\, a proposal was submitted to the attention of the thirty-second session of FAO Committee on Fisheries. The Committee on Fisheries endorsed the proposal for the declaration of 5 June as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The date reflects the day when the Port State Measures Agreement officially entered into force as an international treaty. The entry into force of this agreement marks an historical event\, as it is the first international legally-binding instrument specifically devoted to the fight against illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing. The proposed draft resolution was submitted to the 40th Session of the FAO Conference (July 2017) for approval. In December 2017 the UN General Assembly in its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries proclaimed 5 June as the “International Day for the Fight Against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.” In a world of growing population and persistent hunger\, fish has emerged as an important commodity for the achievement of food security. However\, efforts by the international community to ensure the sustainability of fisheries are being seriously compromised by illegal\, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) recent report\, “Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources – 2025\,” over a third of fish stocks are being overexploited. IUU fishing catches millions of tonnes of fish every year. To curtail this\, Target 4 of Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Agenda adopted in 2015 by the UN General Assembly\, specifically urged the international community to “effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing\, illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices” by 2020. Meeting this ambitious target requires strong awareness-raising efforts to draw the attention of the general public to the negative impacts of illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities\, an activity in which FAO has been actively engaged. \nLinks:\nDay for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

SUMMARY:Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression / United Nations Secretary-General's Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict 2026
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, children living in wars across the globe are facing unspeakable horrors: they are not safe sleeping in their homes or playing outside\, learning in school or seeking medical care at hospitals. From killing and maiming\, abduction and sexual violence\, to attacks on education and health facilities\, and the denial of the humanitarian assistance that they desperately need\, children are being caught in the crosshairs of warring parties at a staggering scale. \nThe United Nations Secretary-General’s Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict reveals that violence against children in armed conflict reached unprecedented levels in 2024\, with a 25 per cent increase in grave violations compared with the previous year. The United Nations verified 41\,370 grave violations against children\, affecting 22\,495 children worldwide. The highest numbers of grave violations were verified in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (8\,554)\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (4\,043)\, Somalia (2\,568)\, Nigeria (2\,436) and Haiti (2\,269). Killing and maiming remained the most prevalent grave violation\, affecting 11\,967 children. Most casualties resulted from explosive ordnance\, including explosive remnants of war\, mines and improvised explosive devices\, as well as crossfire and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.Thousands of children were recruited and used by armed forces and armed groups\, often in combat or support roles. The sharp rise in cases involving recruitment\, abduction and other overlapping violations highlights the growing risks faced by children in conflict settings. The United Nations verified a significant rise in conflict-related sexual violence against children\, including a dramatic increase in gang rape. Girls were disproportionately affected\, while boys were also subjected to sexual violence. The violation remains severely underreported because of stigma\, fear of reprisals\, lack of services and concerns for survivors’ safety.Denial of humanitarian access reached alarming levels in 2024. Parties to conflict attacked aid convoys and humanitarian personnel\, imposed movement restrictions\, interfered with relief operations and created administrative barriers\, leaving children without access to healthcare\, education\, protection and other essential services. The United Nations verified nearly 2\,000 attacks on schools and hospitals in 2024\, making these essential civilian facilities increasingly unsafe for children. Attacks on schools and hospitals\, as well as their military use\, continued to disrupt children’s access to education and healthcare. The destruction of civilian infrastructure and attacks on protected facilities further increased children’s vulnerability in conflict-affected areas. Ending and preventing grave violations against children remains central to the United Nations mandate on children and armed conflict. Protecting children requires addressing the root causes of conflict\, ensuring accountability for violations and investing in child protection\, recovery and reintegration efforts. \nLinks:\nDay of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

SUMMARY:114th Session of the International Labour Conference
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, the International Labour Organization (ILO) – a United Nations (UN) agency whose mandate is to advance social and economic justice by setting international labour standards – organizes the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva to set the broad policies of the ILO\, including conventions and recommendations. \nAlso known as the “international parliament of labour”\, the conference makes decisions about the ILO’s general policy\, work programme and budget and also elects the Governing Body. Each member state is represented by a delegation composed of two government delegates\, an employer delegate\, a worker delegate. All of them have individual voting rights and all votes are equal\, regardless of the population of the delegate’s member State. The employer and worker delegates are normally chosen in agreement with the most representative national organizations of employers and workers. Usually\, the workers and employers’ delegates coordinate their voting. All delegates have the same rights and are not required to vote in blocs. Delegates can attend with advisers and substitute delegates\, and all have the same rights: they can express themselves freely and vote as they wish. Heads of State and prime ministers also participate in the Conference. International organizations\, both governmental and others\, also attend but as observers. In June 2026\, Government\, Employer and Worker representatives from the 187 ILO Member States will gather at the International Labour Conference to discuss world of work issues such as decent work in the platform economy\, a transformative agenda for gender equality at work and social dialogue and tripartism. \nLinks:\n114th Session of the International Labour Conference

SUMMARY:#InternationalDayOfPotato Day of Potato 2026
DESCRIPTION:On 30 May\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) spotlights the potato\, Solanum tuberosum (L.) – a crop regularly consumed by billions of people\, potatoes are a key crop across diverse farming systems globally\, ranging from smallholders producing diverse heirloom varieties by hand in the Andes\, to vast commercial\, mechanized farms in different continents. \nPotatoes contribute to the food security and nutrition as well as and livelihoods and employment of people in rural and urban areas the world over. The Day is an opportunity to build on the International Year of the Potato\, which was observed in 2008. The observance will also be used to underscore the importance of the crop to combating hunger and poverty and addressing environmental threats to agrifood systems. The roles of small-scale family farmers\, a significant proportion of whom are women\, in safeguarding the wide spectrum of the crop’s diversity\, will also be recognized\, while the cultural and culinary dimensions of the crop’s cultivation and consumption will be celebrated. The third observance of the International Day of Potato will be on 29 May 2026 (as 30 May falls on a Saturday)\, with the theme Where potatoes grow\, livelihoods flourish. The theme positions the role of potatoes in strengthening livelihoods for farmers and value chain actors —from the highlands of the Andes to Africa\, Europe\, Asia and beyond. By advancing potato farming and value chain development\, the crop contributes to poverty reduction\, resilience and more inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems.

SUMMARY:Day of UN Peacekeepers 2026
DESCRIPTION:On the Day of UN Peacekeepers\, the United Nations (UN) honour peacekeepers past and present and reaffirm our shared responsibility to respect and strengthen their work. \nFor nearly 80 years\, UN peacekeepers have delivered tangible change to communities across the globe. From Liberia and Namibia to Cambodia\, Sierra Leone and Timor-Leste\, their presence has been life-saving and transformative in some of the most volatile political and security contexts\, guiding countries from conflict towards sustainable peace. Observed under the theme “Invest in Peace” the 2026 International Day calls for decisive action to ensure civilian and military peacekeepers have the resources to carry out their vital mandates. More than 51\,000 civilians\, military\, and police personnel serve in 11 UN peacekeeping missions\, confronting increasingly complex and interconnected challenges shaped by a shifting geopolitical landscape. In this era of rising tensions\, peacekeeping is a proven and cost-effective way to restore stability and hope. The International Day pays tribute to their unwavering service and sacrifice\, as well as the resilience of the communities they support. It also solemnly honors the nearly 4\,500 peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace\, including 59 in 2025 alone. \nLinks:\nDay of UN Peacekeepers \n

SUMMARY:Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories 2026
DESCRIPTION:In the UN Charter\, a Non-Self-Governing Territory is defined as a territory “whose people have not yet attained a full measure of self-government.” \nIn 1946\, several UN Member States identified a number of territories under their administration that were not self-governing and placed them on a UN list. Countries administering Non-Self-Governing Territories are called administering Powers. As a result of the decolonization process over the years\, most of the territories were removed from the list. Chapter XI of the UN Charter – the Declaration regarding Non-Self-Governing Territories – provides that Member States administering Territories\, which have not attained self-government recognize “that the interests of the inhabitants of these territories are paramount” and accept as a “sacred trust” the obligation to promote their well-being. Furthermore\, administering Powers\, in addition to ensuring the political\, economic\, social and educational advancement of the peoples\, undertake to assist them in developing self-government and free political institutions. Administering Powers also have an obligation to transmit regularly to the Secretary-General information on the economic\, social and educational conditions in the territories under their administration. In a later agreement\, the UN General Assembly\, by its resolution 54/91 of 6 December 1999\, urged the administering Powers concerned to take effective measures to safeguard and guarantee the inalienable rights of the peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territories to their natural resources\, including land\, and to establish and maintain control over the future development of those resources\, and requested the administering Powers to take all necessary steps to protect the property rights of the peoples of those territories. It also urged all States\, directly and through their action in the specialized agencies and other organizations of the United Nations system\, to provide moral and material assistance to the peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territories. Through the same resolution\, the General Assembly requested the annual observance of the Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories. In 2026\, there are 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories remaining. \nLinks:\nWeek of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories

DESCRIPTION:The World Health Assembly (WHA) is the forum through which the World Health Organization (WHO) is governed by its 193 member states\, it is the world’s highest health policy setting body and is composed of health ministers from member states. \nThe members of the WHA generally meet every year in May in Geneva\, Switzerland\, at the Palace of Nations\, the location of WHO Headquarters. The main tasks of the WHA are to decide major policy questions\, as well as to approve the WHO work programme and budget and elect its Director-General (every fifth year) and annually to elect ten members to renew part of its executive board. Its main functions are to determine the policies of the Organization\, supervise financial policies\, and review and approve the proposed programme budget. The Seventy-ninth World Health Assembly (WHA79) takes place in Geneva\, Switzerland from 18 to 23 May 2026\, bringing together delegations from WHO Member States to set global health policy and advance the Organization’s strategic priorities. It will build upon the momentum of the last year’s 78th World Health Assembly\, which adopted the Global Action Plan on Climate Change and Health\, an updated road map for an enhanced global response to the adverse health effects of air pollution\, and the elevation of climate change as the first strategic objective of WHO’s Fourteenth General Programme of Work (GPW14\, 2025–2028). Looking forward to COP31\, co-hosted by Türkiye and Australia\, this Assembly offers an opportunity for the global climate and health community to convene and sustain the political momentum secured at WHA78. \nLinks:\n79th World Health Assembly \nKlimaatverandering bedreigt ook de volksgezondheid\, waarschuwen experts

SUMMARY:Day of Living Together in Peace 2026
DESCRIPTION:Living together in peace is all about accepting differences and having the ability to listen to\, recognize\, respect and appreciate others\, as well as living in a peaceful and united way. \nThe UN General-Assembly\, in its resolution 72/130\, declared 16 May the International Day of Living Together in Peace\, as a means of regularly mobilizing the efforts of the international community to promote peace\, tolerance\, inclusion\, understanding and solidarity. The Day aims to uphold the desire to live and act together\, united in differences and diversity\, in order to build a sustainable world of peace\, solidarity and harmony. The Day invites countries to further promote reconciliation to help to ensure peace and sustainable development\, including by working with communities\, faith leaders and other relevant actors\, through reconciliatory measures and acts of service and by encouraging forgiveness and compassion among individuals. \nFollowing the devastation of the Second World War\, the United Nations was established to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. One of its purposes is to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems\, including by promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race\, sex\, language or religion. In 1997\, the General-Assembly proclaimed – by its resolution 52/15 — the year 2000 as the “International Year for a Culture of Peace”. In 1998\, it proclaimed the period 2001-2010 as the “International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for Children of the World.” In 1999\, The General-Assembly adopted\, by resolution 53/243\, the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace\, which serves as the universal mandate for the international community\, particularly the United Nations system\, to promote a culture of peace and non-violence that benefits all of humanity\, including future generations. \nThe declaration came about as a result of the long-held and cherished concept — contained within the Constitution of UNESCO — that “since wars begin in the minds of men\, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed.” The Declaration embraces the principle that peace is not merely the absence of conflict\, but also requires a positive\, dynamic participatory process\, in which dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are resolved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation. The Declaration also recognizes that to fulfill such an aspiration\, there is a need to eliminate all forms of discrimination and intolerance\, including those based on race\, color\, sex\, language\, religion\, political or other opinion\, national\, ethnic or social origin\, property\, disability\, birth or other status. 2026 Theme: Building Trust through Dialogue\, Inclusion and Reconciliation. \nLinks:\nDay of Living Together in Peace

SUMMARY:Actiedag Weerbaar Erfgoed 2026
\nLinks:\nActiedag Weerbaar Erfgoed
