SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). Scholars of ESG say that their research is instrumental in addressing governance-related needs of UNDOS. \nFirst\, it can identify salient frames for ocean problems that trigger policy action. \nSecond\, it can inform stakeholder involvement by mapping powerful and marginalized interests and suggesting pathways towards more inclusive participation. \nThird\, it can support viable and effective ocean solutions based on insights into political support coalitions and governance design. \nMainstreaming of governance research into ocean science has also been recommended: The ESG community can facilitate this mainstreaming by enhancing knowledge cumulation around ocean issues within the network; engaging more strongly in the production of actionable and action-oriented knowledge; and seeking integration into inter- and transdisciplinary ocean research. Sub-topics where ESG with regards to ocean governance can be applied are for example governance issues around deep sea mining\, ocean acidification\, marine biodiversity. \nLinks:\nUN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development \n2025 UN Ocean Conference \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities \n#30thSessionCouncil #DeepSeabed #TheArea #UNCLOS 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority Part I (TV ISA Web TV) \nVPRO #Tegenlicht : de strijd om de diepzee (TV internet / NPO 2) \nLive session with Free Range Ocean

SUMMARY:Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. This new Decade of Action provides an opportunity for harnessing the successes and lessons of previous years and building upon them to save more lives. \nLinks:\nDecade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 \n#WDoR2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2023

SUMMARY:#HumanTrafficking #EndHumanTrafficking World Day Against Trafficking in Persons / Werelddag tegen Mensenhandel 2026
DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking is a crime that exploits children\, men and women for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex. \nTrafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year\, thousands of men\, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers\, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking\, whether as a country of origin\, transit or destination for victims. UNODC\, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto\, assists States in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (Trafficking in Persons Protocol). The Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment\, transportation\, transfer\, harbouring or receipt of persons\, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion\, of abduction\, of fraud\, of deception\, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person\, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include\, at a minimum\, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation\, forced labour or services\, slavery or practices similar to slavery\, servitude or the removal of organs. The World Day against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/68/192. Theme 2026\, “Trapped Behind the Scam\,” draws attention to a rapidly expanding form of human trafficking in which transnational organized crime groups exploit people to carry out industrial-scale financial fraud. Victims are trafficked for forced criminality and compelled to participate in online scam operations. This form of exploitation is closely linked to cybercrime\, financial fraud\, money laundering\, and corruption\, demonstrating the increasingly interconnected nature of organized crime. \nLinks:\nWorld Day Against Trafficking in Persons – 30 July

SUMMARY:Day of Friendship / Dag van de Vriendschap 2026
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples\, countries\, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. \nThe resolution places emphasis on involving young people\, as future leaders\, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity. To mark the International Day of Friendship the UN encourages governments\, international organizations and civil society groups to hold events\, activities and initiatives that contribute to the efforts of the international community towards promoting a dialogue among civilizations\, solidarity\, mutual understanding and reconciliation. The International Day of Friendship is an initiative that follows on the proposal made by UNESCO defining the Culture of Peace as a set of values\, attitudes and behaviours that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes with a view to solving problems. It was then adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997. In a time when the noise of division grows louder — fueled by wars\, conflicts\, inequality\, and fear — friendship feels almost radical in its simplicity. It doesn’t arrive with fanfare or policy; it doesn’t need speeches or signatures. It begins with something quieter: a conversation\, a shared moment\, a willingness to see one another not as strangers but as fellow travelers through the human experience. In this year’s observance of the International Day of Friendship\, we’re reminded that real peace is forged not only in negotiation halls or by writing into treaties — it’s built\, thread by thread\, in the trust we extend to one another in daily life. Friendship\, especially among young people\, holds a special kind of power. It can cross languages\, faiths\, and histories that might otherwise divide us. It invites us to listen before we judge\, to stay when it’s easier to walk away. And when nurtured across cultures and communities\, friendship becomes more than a bond—it becomes a blueprint for reconciliation. It teaches us that understanding isn’t a grand achievement; it’s a habit\, a practice\, a way of moving through the world that says ‘your well-being matters to me too’. This year\, as the world faces profound ruptures — between nations\, within societies\, even within families — the call to friendship is not sentimental. It’s essential. It’s about reaching across what breaks us and daring to believe in something better. It is a call to imagine a future where difference doesn’t mean distance\, where trust is stronger than fear. Through friendship\, we don’t just cope with the world as it is — we begin to shape the world as it could be. \nLinks:\nDay of Friendship 30 July
