SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). SUMMARY:Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a United Nations body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world\, the Council has 47 members elected for staggered three-year terms on a regional group basis. \nThe headquarters of the Council are at the United Nations Office at Geneva in Switzerland. The Council investigates allegations of breaches of human rights in United Nations member states and addresses thematic human rights issues like freedom of association and assembly\, freedom of expression\, freedom of belief and religion\, women’s rights\, LGBT rights\, and the rights of racial and ethnic minorities. The Council was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 15 March 2006 to replace the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR\, herein CHR). The Council works closely with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and engages the United Nations special procedures. The Council has been strongly criticized for including member countries that engage in human rights abuses. The UNHRC holds regular sessions three times a year\, in March\, June\, and September. DESCRIPTION:In 1979\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a program of activities to be undertaken during the second half of the Decade for Action to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination. \nOn this occasion\, the General Assembly decided that a week of solidarity with the peoples struggling against racism and racial discrimination\, beginning on 21 March\, would be organized annually. The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination\, March 21\, commemorates the anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960 and falls at the beginning of this week of solidarity. On that day in South Africa\, peaceful demonstrators against apartheid were killed. DESCRIPTION:The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Panel meets in plenary session about twice a year. It may meet more often for the approval of reports. \nThe Panel controls the IPCC’s structure\, procedures\, work programme\, and budget and accepts and approves IPCC reports. The Panel is the IPCC corporate entity. The IPCC is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations (UN). Its job is to “provide governments at all levels with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies“. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) set up the IPCC in 1988. The UN endorsed the creation of the IPCC later that year. It has a secretariat in Geneva\, Switzerland\, hosted by the WMO. It has 195 member states who govern the IPCC. The member states elect a bureau of scientists to serve through an assessment cycle. A cycle is usually six to seven years. The bureau selects experts in their fields to prepare IPCC reports. There is a formal nomination process by governments and observer organizations to find these experts. DESCRIPTION:The Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members is marked each year on the anniversary of the abduction of Alec Collett\, a former journalist who was working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) when he was abducted by armed gunman in 1985; his body was finally found in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley in 2009. \nThe Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members has taken on even greater importance in recent years\, as attacks against the United Nations intensify.  This is a day to mobilize action\, demand justice and strengthen their resolve to protect UN staff and peacekeepers\, as well as their colleagues in the non-governmental community and the press. Since the founding of the United Nations in 1945\, hundreds of brave men and women have lost their lives in its service. During the 1990s\, the growing number and scale of UN peacekeeping missions put many more at risk. More lives were lost during the 1990s than in the previous four decades combined. At that time\, an awareness began to develop among Member States and staff\, that the more active the UN became in the future\, the more it was going to be targeted. The first resolution on staff security was adopted by the UN Security Council in September 1993. Complex negotiations subsequently took place in the Sixth (Legal) Committee of the General Assembly on an international legal convention to protect UN personnel. The result of those negotiations was the Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel\, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 9 December 1994. \nLinks:\nInternational Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members 25 March

DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is a time for reflection\, but it is also a time for education. \nDespite myths to the contrary\, enslaved Africans enriched the Americas not just through their labour but also through a transfer of vital skills and knowledge. In addition\, rather than accepting their fate\, they engaged in powerful acts of resistance. The United Nations works to highlight such stories through its Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery\, which is managed by the Department of Global Communications\, and the Routes of Enslaved Peoples Project\, which is run by the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In 2006\, the United Nations General Assembly\, through resolution 61/19\, recognized that “the slave trade and slavery are among the worst violations of human rights in the history of humanity\, bearing in mind particularly their scale and duration” and designated 25 March 2007 as the International Day for the Commemoration of the Two-hundredth Anniversary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. \nThe following year\, through resolution 62/122\, it designated 25 March as an annual International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, beginning in 2008. The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was passed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 1807. From that day on\, “all manner of dealing and reading in the purchase\, sale\, barter\, or transfer of slaves or of persons intending to be sold\, transferred\, used\, or dealt with as slaves\, practiced or carried in\, at\, or from any part of the coast or countries of Africa shall be abolished\, prohibited and declared to be unlawful”. However\, while the act abolished the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans\, it did not abolish slavery\, which still continued for decades.
