SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). Scholars of ESG say that their research is instrumental in addressing governance-related needs of UNDOS. \nFirst\, it can identify salient frames for ocean problems that trigger policy action. \nSecond\, it can inform stakeholder involvement by mapping powerful and marginalized interests and suggesting pathways towards more inclusive participation. \nThird\, it can support viable and effective ocean solutions based on insights into political support coalitions and governance design. \nMainstreaming of governance research into ocean science has also been recommended: The ESG community can facilitate this mainstreaming by enhancing knowledge cumulation around ocean issues within the network; engaging more strongly in the production of actionable and action-oriented knowledge; and seeking integration into inter- and transdisciplinary ocean research. Sub-topics where ESG with regards to ocean governance can be applied are for example governance issues around deep sea mining\, ocean acidification\, marine biodiversity. \nLinks:\nUN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development \n2025 UN Ocean Conference \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities \n#30thSessionCouncil #DeepSeabed #TheArea #UNCLOS 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority Part I (TV ISA Web TV) \nVPRO #Tegenlicht : de strijd om de diepzee (TV internet / NPO 2) \nLive session with Free Range Ocean

SUMMARY:Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. This new Decade of Action provides an opportunity for harnessing the successes and lessons of previous years and building upon them to save more lives. \nLinks:\nDecade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 \n#WDoR2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2023

SUMMARY:Day of Awareness of the Special Development Needs and Challenges of Landlocked Developing Countries 2026
DESCRIPTION:Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) lack territorial access to the sea\, leaving them dependent on transit neighbors for a route to world markets. \nThis geographic disadvantage drives up transport costs\, introduces avoidable delays\, and exposes LLDCs to any political or economic instability along those corridors. The results are stark: Average transport costs are more than twice those of neighboring coastal states. Export opportunities shrink\, foreign direct investment falls\, and economic growth slows. When a transit country is itself a developing economy—often the case—intraregional trade remains modest. We are at a pivotal moment for the 32 LLDCs across Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, and South America. Home to over 600 million people\, LLDCs face steep development hurdles due to lack of sea access\, geographical isolation\, and trade costs that are 30% higher than those of coastal countries. To spotlight these challenges\, the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution proclaiming August 6 as the International Day of Awareness of the Special Development Needs and Challenges of Landlocked Developing Countries. The first celebration of this Day will take place during the Third Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries in 2025. \nLinks:\nDay of Awareness of the Special Development Needs and Challenges of Landlocked Developing Countries

SUMMARY:UNCCD 17th session of the Conference of the Parties
DESCRIPTION:The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be hosted by Mongolia in its capital city\, Ulaanbaatar\, from 17 to 28 August 2026. \nThis landmark global event will bring together delegates from 197 Parties\, heads of state\, ministers\, representatives from international organizations\, scientific communities\, civil society\, and the private sector to forge solutions to the interconnected challenges of desertification\, land degradation and drought. Mongolia\, with a vast territory of 1.56 million square kilometers\, is experiencing land degradation across approximately 76.9 per cent of its land. Recognizing the critical role of land management in addressing the triple environmental crisis\, the country has become a key voice in global efforts to combat desertification and enhance land resilience. Mongolia’s ambitious development agendas—particularly its interconnected national movements on environment and agriculture—position the country as a strategic host for COP17 of the UNCCD. COP17 will be convened in alignment with the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026)\, offering a crucial global opportunity to highlight sustainable rangeland management and the needs of more than one billion people who directly depend on these vital ecosystems for their livelihoods. During the two-week conference\, participants will engage in a high-level segment that includes ministerial dialogues\, along with multi-stakeholder forums and thematic discussions on science–policy integration\, innovation\, solutions\, technology\, and financing. The event is expected to foster impactful collaboration and action across sectors\, advancing the goals of sustainable land management\, ecosystem and land restoration\, and the implementation of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets. Mongolia’s strong development and environmental agenda — including the national ‘Billions of Trees’ movement\, the ‘White Gold’ community-based rural development initiative\, and the ‘Food Revolution’ agri-soil initiative — positions the country as a regional and global model of action. Hosting COP17 will provide a historic opportunity to elevate international cooperation on land\, climate\, and biodiversity to a new level. This pivotal conference will mark a significant step forward in uniting the world around solutions to land degradation and climate challenges\, solidifying Mongolia’s contribution to building a sustainable and resilient future for all. \nLinks:\nUNCCD COP17 \nCOP16 and COP17 Presidencies join forces to accelerate global action on land and drought

SUMMARY:#UNiteforVictimsofTerrorism #VictimsofTerrorism Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism / Herdenking en Eerbetoon aan de Slachtoffers van Terrorisme 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017. \nIn its resolution 72/165 (2017)\, the General Assembly\, established the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism to be commemorated annually on 21 August\, in order to honour and support the victims and survivors of terrorism and to promote and protect the full enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedoms. In April 2020\, mandated by General Assembly resolution 73/305\, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres published his report on the ‘Progress of the UN system to support Member States in assisting victims of terrorism’ (A/74/790)\, which calls for the ‘enhancement of international cooperation to assist victims of terrorism’. Member States\, through the biennial review resolutions of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy have emphasized the important role of victims of terrorism in countering terrorism\, promoting international solidarity\, preventing violent extremism\, and helping Member States recognize and uphold their human rights\, and support their distinct needs. \nSince the sixth review of the Strategy (2018)\, developments at the international\, regional\, and national levels have increasingly demonstrated that support to victims has moved beyond symbolic solidarity towards a more robust engagement to advance their rights and needs. This is reflected in the establishment in 2019 of a Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism\, and the adoption of General Assembly resolution A/RES/73/305 on the enhancement of international cooperation to assist victims of terrorism. The eighth review resolution\, adopted on 22 June 2023 (A/RES/77/298) notes the importance of upholding the rights and supporting the needs of victims of terrorism\, in particular of women\, children and those affected by sexual and gender-based violence committed by terrorists. It encourages all Member States to develop national comprehensive assistance plans for victims of terrorism and their families to address the immediate-\, short- and long-term needs of victims of terrorism. The resolution welcomed the first United Nations Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism\, held in September 2022 at UN Headquarters\, encourages the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism\, through the Global Victims of Terrorism Support Programme and the United Nations Victims of Terrorism Support Portal\, to continue to raise awareness on victims of terrorism and the promotion and protection of their rights. This includes strengthening the capacity of Member States to assist victims of terrorism and strengthen their engagement with relevant civil society and private sector organisations\, which can play a valuable role in assisting and supporting victims of terrorism. \nLinks:\nDay of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism\, 21 August

SUMMARY:Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief 2026
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. \nThe General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/73/296\, designated 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief recognizing the importance of providing victims of acts of violence based on religion or belief and members of their families with appropriate support and assistance in accordance with applicable law. It strongly deplored all acts of violence against persons on the basis of their religion or belief\, as well as any such acts directed against their homes\, businesses\, properties\, schools\, cultural centres or places of worship\, as well as all attacks on and in religious places\, sites and shrines that are in violation of international law. A previous resolution establishing the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism (A/RES/72/165) also recognized that working together to enhance the implementation of existing legal regimes that protect individuals against discrimination and hate crimes\, increasing interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural efforts and expanding human rights education are important first steps in combating incidents of intolerance\, discrimination and violence against individuals on the basis of religion or belief. \nBy proclaiming an International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief\, the General Assembly recalled that States have the primary responsibility to promote and protect human rights\, including the human rights of persons belonging to religious minorities\, including their right to exercise their religion or belief freely. Freedom of religion or belief\, freedom of opinion and expression\, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of association are interdependent\, interrelated and mutually reinforcing. They are enshrined in articles 18\, 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Upholding these rights plays an important role in the fight against all forms of intolerance and of discrimination based on religion or belief. The open\, constructive and respectful debate of ideas\, as well as interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural dialogue\, at the local\, national\, regional and international levels\, can play a positive role in combating religious hatred\, incitement and violence. Furthermore\, the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and full respect for the freedom to seek\, receive and impart information can play a positive role in strengthening democracy and combating religious intolerance. \nLinks:\nDay Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief

SUMMARY:#RememberSlavery Anti-slavenhandeldag / Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition 2026
\nLinks:\nantislavery.org \n#Slavernij afgeschaft (1863) / #KetiKoti (TV AT5) \nDay for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

SUMMARY:World Lake Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:This first World Lake Day\, let’s be aware of the problem lakes are facing; let’s protect them today for a sustaining life tomorrow. \nLakes are one of the most vital natural resources on our planet. They serve as a crucial source of fresh water\, supporting drinking water supplies\, agriculture\, and industry. Lakes also play a key role in maintaining biodiversity\, offering a habitat for countless species of fish\, plants\, and wildlife. Beyond their ecological significance\, lakes contribute to climate regulation by keeping the planet cool\, absorbing the floodwater and storing carbon. Additionally\, they provide recreational and economic opportunities\, attracting tourism\, fishing\, and other activities that support local communities. But lakes are affected by a combination of overuse\, pollution and climate change. Lake pollution is frequently caused by inflows from fertilizers\, contaminants and solid waste being dumped directly\, or flushed into lakes via rivers\, and this is worsened by global warming – leading\, for instance\, to more frequent and intense floods. The water levels of lakes are also changing dramatically. Rising temperatures and changes to cloud cover\, which are leading to decreasing ice cover\, are increasing the rate of water evaporation. We need to act now. \nLinks:\nWorld Lake Day \nTake action for lakes \nFreshwater challenge

SUMMARY:Day Against Nuclear Tests / Dag tegen Kernproeven 2026
DESCRIPTION:The International Day against Nuclear Tests\, together with other events and actions\, has fostered a global environment that strongly advocates for a world free of nuclear weapons. \nSince nuclear weapons testing began on 16 July 1945\, nearly 2\,000 have taken place. In the early days of nuclear testing little consideration was given to its devastating effects on human life\, let alone the dangers of nuclear fallout from atmospheric tests. Hindsight and history have shown us the terrifying and tragic effects of nuclear weapons testing\, especially when controlled conditions go awry\, and in light of the far more powerful and destructive nuclear weapons that exist today. On 2 December 2009\, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting resolution 64/35. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.” The resolution was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan\, together with a large number of sponsors and cosponsors with a view to commemorating the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site on 29 August 1991. \n2010 marked the inaugural commemoration of the International Day against Nuclear Tests. In each subsequent year\, the day has been observed by coordinating various activities throughout the world\, such as symposia\, conferences\, exhibits\, competitions\, publications\, lectures\, media broadcasts and other initiatives. Since its establishment\, many bilateral and multilateral governmental level developments as well as broad movements in civil society have helped to advance the cause of banning nuclear tests. Moreover\, “convinced that nuclear disarmament and the total elimination of nuclear weapons are the only absolute guarantee against the use or threat of nuclear weapons\,” the General Assembly designated 26 September as the “Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons“\, which is devoted to furthering the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons\, through the mobilization of international efforts. \nThe International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons was observed for the first time in September 2014. The international instrument to put an end to all forms of nuclear testing is the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Unfortunately\, this has yet to enter into force. As the Secretary-General recognized in his disarmament agenda “Securing our Common Future” launched on 24 May 2018\, the norm against testing is an example of a measure that serves both disarmament and non-proliferation objectives. By constraining the development of advanced new types of nuclear weapons\, the CTBT puts a brake on the arms race. It also serves as a powerful normative barrier against potential States that might seek to develop\, manufacture and subsequently acquire nuclear weapons in violation of their non-proliferation commitments. \nEvery effort needs to be made to ensure the entry into force of the CTBT and to preserve its place in the international architecture. In this regard\, the Secretary-General appeals to all remaining States whose ratifications are required for the CTBT to enter into force to commit to sign the Treaty at an early date if they have not already done so\, and to accelerate the completion of their ratification processes. It is the hope of the UN that one day all nuclear weapons will be eliminated. Until then\, there is a need to observe International Day against Nuclear Tests as the world works towards promoting peace and security. \nLinks:\nDay Against Nuclear Tests 29 August

SUMMARY:Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances / Dag voor de Slachtoffers van Gedwongen Verdwijningen 2026
DESCRIPTION:On 21 December 2010\, by its resolution 65/209 the UN General Assembly expressed its deep concern about the increase in enforced or involuntary disappearances in various regions of the world\, including arrest\, detention and abduction\, when these are part of or amount to enforced disappearances\, and by the growing number of reports concerning harassment\, ill-treatment and intimidation of witnesses of disappearances or relatives of persons who have disappeared. \nBy the same resolution the Assembly welcomed the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance\, and decided to declare 30 August the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances\, to be observed beginning in 2011. According to the Declaration on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance\, proclaimed by the General Assembly in its resolution 47/133 of 18 December 1992 as a body of principles for all States\, an enforced disappearance occurs when: \n“persons are arrested\, detained or abducted against their will or otherwise deprived of their liberty by officials of different branches or levels of Government\, or by organized groups or private individuals acting on behalf of\, or with the support\, direct or indirect\, consent or acquiescence of the Government\, followed by a refusal to disclose the fate or whereabouts of the persons concerned or a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of their liberty\, which places such persons outside the protection of the law.” \n2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances\, the only universal treaty specifically dedicated to preventing and eradicating enforced disappearances. Under the slogan “Victims first. Actions now” \, the anniversary puts victims and their rights to truth\, justice and reparation at the centre\, while calling on States and other stakeholders to act to prevent enforced disappearances. Twenty years after the Convention’s adoption\, enforced disappearances continue to occur in every region\, making universal ratification and full implementation an urgent priority. Throughout 2026\, CED20 will bring together States\, victims\, civil society\, national human rights institutions\, UN entities and partners to raise awareness\, share concrete actions and strengthen protections. Enforced disappearance has frequently been used as a strategy to spread terror within the society. The feeling of insecurity generated by this practice is not limited to the close relatives of the disappeared\, but also affects their communities and society as a whole. Enforced disappearance has become a global problem and is not restricted to a specific region of the world. Once largely the product of military dictatorships\, enforced disappearances can nowadays be perpetrated in complex situations of internal conflict\, especially as a means of political repression of opponents. Of particular concern are: \n\nthe ongoing harassment of human rights defenders\, relatives of victims\, witnesses and legal counsel dealing with cases of enforced disappearance;\nthe use by States of counter-terrorist activities as an excuse for breaching their obligations;\nand the still widespread impunity for enforced disappearance.\n\nSpecial attention must also be paid to specific groups of especially vulnerable people\, like children and people with disabilities. Hundreds of thousands of people have vanished during conflicts or periods of repression in at least 85 countries around the world. \nLinks:\nDay of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances

SUMMARY:Day for People of African Descent 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Day for People of African Descent will be celebrated for the first time on 31 August 2021\, through this Observance the United Nations aims to promote the extraordinary contributions of the African diaspora around the world and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against people of African descent. \nInternational days reflect the values that society shares. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights and have the potential to contribute constructively to the development and well-being of their societies. Any doctrine of racial superiority is scientifically false\, morally condemnable\, socially unjust\, and dangerous and must be rejected\, together with theories that attempt to determine the existence of separate human races. The United Nations strongly condemns the continuing violent practices and excessive use of force by law enforcement agencies against Africans and people of African descent and condemns structural racism in criminal justice systems around the world. The Organization further acknowledges the Transatlantic Slave Trade as one of the darkest chapters in our human history and upholds human dignity and equality for the victims of slavery\, the slave trade and colonialism\, in particular people of African descent in the African diaspora. \nThe 2026 International Day for People of African Descent is being observed under the theme “Expanding the Human Rights of People of African Descent” within the framework of the Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025–2034). Building on the achievements of the first International Decade\, the observance reaffirms the commitment to Recognition\, Justice and Development while accelerating action to address persistent inequalities\, systemic racism\, and the lasting impacts of racialized chattel enslavement and colonialism. It also provides an opportunity to strengthen collaboration among the United Nations\, Member States\, civil society\, and people of African descent to advance the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide. The 2026 observance seeks to expand the human rights of people of African descent through stronger legal\, policy\, and institutional measures to combat racism\, racial discrimination\, xenophobia\, and related intolerance. \nIt also underscores the importance of ensuring the full enjoyment of economic\, social\, cultural\, civil\, and political rights\, while advancing equal access to education\, employment\, healthcare\, housing\, and economic opportunities. These priorities reflect the objectives of the Second International Decade and build on efforts to increase visibility\, awareness\, and respect for people of African descent and their contributions to society. This year’s discussions examine reparatory justice through the return of cultural artefacts\, the human rights situation of youth of African descent\, and the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action as an opportunity to reflect on turning existing human rights commitments into concrete action. Guided by the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action\, these discussions will reinforce international efforts to address the enduring consequences of racism\, racial discrimination\, the transatlantic slave trade\, racialized chattel slavery\, and colonialism through sustained cooperation and concrete action. \nLinks:\nDay for People of African Descent
