SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). Scholars of ESG say that their research is instrumental in addressing governance-related needs of UNDOS. \nFirst\, it can identify salient frames for ocean problems that trigger policy action. \nSecond\, it can inform stakeholder involvement by mapping powerful and marginalized interests and suggesting pathways towards more inclusive participation. \nThird\, it can support viable and effective ocean solutions based on insights into political support coalitions and governance design. \nMainstreaming of governance research into ocean science has also been recommended: The ESG community can facilitate this mainstreaming by enhancing knowledge cumulation around ocean issues within the network; engaging more strongly in the production of actionable and action-oriented knowledge; and seeking integration into inter- and transdisciplinary ocean research. Sub-topics where ESG with regards to ocean governance can be applied are for example governance issues around deep sea mining\, ocean acidification\, marine biodiversity. \nLinks:\nUN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development \n2025 UN Ocean Conference \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities \n#30thSessionCouncil #DeepSeabed #TheArea #UNCLOS 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority Part I (TV ISA Web TV) \nVPRO #Tegenlicht : de strijd om de diepzee (TV internet / NPO 2) \nLive session with Free Range Ocean

SUMMARY:Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. This new Decade of Action provides an opportunity for harnessing the successes and lessons of previous years and building upon them to save more lives. \nLinks:\nDecade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 \n#WDoR2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2023

SUMMARY:#CoopsDay Day of Cooperatives 2026
DESCRIPTION:On July 6\, cooperatives around the world will celebrate the Day of Cooperatives. \nCo-operatives have been acknowledged as associations and enterprises through which citizens can effectively improve their lives while contributing to the economic\, social\, cultural and political advancement of their community and nation. The co-operative movement has been also recognized as a distinct and major stakeholder in both national and international affairs. Co-operatives’ open membership model affords access to wealth creation and poverty elimination. This results from the co-operative principle of members’ economic participation: ‘Members contribute equitably to\, and democratically control\, the capital of their co-operative.’ Because co-operatives are people-centred\, not capital-centred \, they do not perpetuate\, nor accelerate capital concentration and they distribute wealth in a more fair way. Co-operatives also foster external equality. As they are community-based\, they are committed to the sustainable development of their communities – environmentally\, socially and economically. This commitment can be seen in their support for community activities\, local sourcing of supplies to benefit the local economy\, and in decision-making that considers the impact on their communities. Despite their local community focus\, co-operatives also aspire to bring the benefits of their economic and social model to all people in the world. Globalization should be governed by a set of values such as those of the co-operative movement; otherwise\, it creates more inequality and excesses that render it unsustainable. The cooperative movement is highly democratic\, locally autonomous\, but internationally integrated\, and a form of organization of associations and enterprises whereby citizens themselves rely on self-help and their own responsibility to meet goals that include not only economic\, but also social and environmental objectives\, such as overcoming poverty\, securing productive employment and encouraging social integration. \nThe 2026 theme of the United Nations International Day of Cooperatives\, “Cooperatives for a peaceful world”\, affirms the contribution of cooperative enterprises to social justice\, inclusion and solidarity. It recognizes cooperatives as people-centered institutions that can help build trust\, strengthen social cohesion and bring communities together around shared needs and aspirations. In a world marked by conflict\, inequality\, social fragmentation and declining trust\, the theme recalls that peace is more than the absence of violence: it also requires inclusion\, fairness\, dialogue and economic security. Announced by the International Cooperative Alliance\, this year’s theme also reflects the capacity of the cooperative model to serve as a bridge between people and communities. Through democratic ownership\, open membership and collective responsibility\, cooperatives create spaces in which people can participate\, be heard and work together across social and economic divides. Rooted in communities and connected through an international movement\, they support livelihoods\, decent work\, poverty reduction\, social integration and peacebuilding among peoples\, communities and nations. \nLinks:\nDay of Cooperatives

SUMMARY:Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons – adopted (2017) 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)\, or the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty\, is the first legally binding international agreement to prohibit nuclear weapons\, with the ultimate goal being their total elimination. \nIt was adopted on 7 July 2017\, opened for signature on 20 September 2017\, and entered into force on 22 January 2021. For those states that are party to it\, the treaty prohibits the development\, testing\, production\, stockpiling\, stationing\, transfer\, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons\, as well as assistance and encouragement to the prohibited activities. For nuclear-armed states joining the treaty\, it provides for a time-bound framework for negotiations leading to the verified and irreversible elimination of its nuclear weapons programme. A mandate adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 23 December 2016 scheduled two sessions for negotiations: 27 to 31 March and 15 June to 7 July 2017. The treaty passed on schedule on 7 July with 122 in favour\, 1 against (Netherlands)\, and 1 official abstention (Singapore). States that have joined the treaty are typically also members of nuclear-weapon-free zones. None of the states that possess nuclear weapons have joined the treaty\, nor have any of the states that participate in nuclear sharing or extended nuclear deterrence relationships\, including NATO members\, Australia\, Belarus\, Japan\, and South Korea. \nLinks:\nUnited Nations Conference to Negotiate a Legally Binding Instrument to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons\, Leading Towards their Total Elimination \nAgenda 07-07-2023 – Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons | The ban treaty\, two years after: A ray of hope for nuclear disarmament

SUMMARY:Global status report on cancer 2026: the future we choose together - publication
DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organization (WHO) ‘Global status report on cancer 2026: the future we choose together‘ provides a comprehensive assessment of the global burden of cancer\, progress in cancer prevention and control\, and the systemic challenges that continue to limit equitable outcomes. \nPresenting new data on the burden of disease\, the capacity of health systems to respond\, and the lived experiences of people affected by cancer\, the report examines trends in incidence\, mortality\, survival\, risk factors and health system performance\, as well as the human\, social and economic consequences of cancer. It reviews implementation across the cancer continuum\, including prevention\, early detection\, diagnosis\, treatment\, palliative care and survivorship\, highlighting persistent disparities between and within countries and the gap between ambition and action. The report analyses the factors that drive progress and those that impede effective implementation\, emphasizing the importance of integrated\, people-centred approaches\, universal health coverage\, robust monitoring systems and meaningful engagement of affected communities. It highlights the coexistence of scientific advances and persistent inequities in who benefits from them and proposes a framework for future action based on three strategic shifts – better capabilities\, better protections and better value. Seven recommendations guide governments\, international organizations and other stakeholders in strengthening cancer control and advancing more equitable outcomes worldwide. \nLinks:\nGlobal status report on cancer 2026: the future we choose together

SUMMARY:Day of Hope 2026
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Hope-Day by turning optimism into meaningful action. \nIn a world facing growing unrest\, widening social divisions\, and persistent economic and environmental challenges\, the global community continues to seek values that unite rather than divide. Among these\, hope stands out as a deeply powerful and universally resonant force. Recognizing this\, the United Nations General Assembly has designated 12 July as the International Day of Hope—a day to celebrate and promote hope as a guiding principle for individuals\, communities\, and nations alike. This resolution draws upon the enduring values of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, which call for peace\, dignity\, tolerance\, and shared progress. It builds on earlier UN initiatives—such as the International Day of Conscience—by highlighting the essential role hope plays in promoting well-being\, mutual respect\, social stability\, and sustainable development. The declaration of the International Day of Hope is more than symbolic—it is a global invitation to act. It calls on Member States\, regional and international bodies\, civil society\, and individuals to cultivate environments where hope can thrive. These efforts may include public education\, awareness campaigns\, community outreach\, acts of kindness\, and the promotion of forgiveness and reconciliation. By embracing these values\, societies can foster inclusion\, empathy\, and resilience. Ultimately\, this day is a reminder that even in difficult times\, hope remains a transformative force. It can bridge divides\, drive progress\, and uplift the human spirit. The International Day of Hope invites all of us to pause\, reflect\, and recommit to a future built not on despair or division\, but on shared humanity and the unwavering belief in a better tomorrow. \nLinks:\nDay of Hope

SUMMARY:Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms 2026
DESCRIPTION:Recognizing that sand and dust storms and their negative impacts at different scales are issues of international concern\, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 12 July as the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms (A/RES/77/294). \nThe United Nations General Assembly\, furthermore\, stressed the need for cooperation at the global and regional levels\, with a view to preventing\, managing and mitigating the effects of sand and dust storms through the enhancement of early warning systems and the sharing of climate and weather information to forecast sand and dust storms. The General Assembly affirmed that resilient action to combat and reduce sand and dust storms requires a better understanding of the severe multidimensional impacts of sand and dust storms\, including the deterioration of the health\, well-being and livelihood of people\, increased desertification and land degradation\, deforestation\, loss of biodiversity and land productivity\, threatening food security\, and their impact on sustainable economic growth. \nLinks:\nDay of Combating Sand and Dust Storms

SUMMARY:#SkillsRightNow #WorldYouthSkillsDay Wereld Jonge Talentendag / Werelddag van Vaardigheden van Jongeren 2026
DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, the United Nations General Assembly declared 15 July as World Youth Skills Day\, to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship. \nThe world of work is changing rapidly. Artificial intelligence\, the green transition and growing social complexity are transforming how we learn\, work and participate in society. To thrive in this changing landscape\, young people need more than technical skills alone. They need a balanced set of competencies that combines technical\, digital\, AI\, green\, social-emotional and civic skills with the human qualities that technology cannot replace. Under the theme “Skills for a shared future”\,  this year’s World Youth Skills Day activities will spotlight the urgent need for innovative youth skills programmes—initiatives that empower young people not only to adapt\, but to lead with empathy\, bridge cultural divides\, build resilience\, and actively shape a more sustainable and inclusive tomorrow. Youth unemployment remains a major economic and social challenge worldwide. According to the ILO’s Global Employment Trends for Youth 2024\, the global youth unemployment rate fell to 13% in 2023 – a 15-year low and below the pre-pandemic level of 13.8%. However\, recovery has been uneven: in the Arab States\, East Asia\, and South-East Asia\, rates were higher in 2023 than in 2019. Meanwhile\, one in five young people globally – and over a quarter of young women – were NEET (not in employment\, education\, or training)\, with young women’s NEET rate (28.1%) more than double that of young men (13.1%). Even for those who work\, decent jobs remain scarce. Over half of young workers are in informal employment\, and in low-income countries\, three in four hold only self-employment or temporary jobs. Investment in green and blue sectors could create 8.4 million youth jobs by 2030\, but these must come with decent working conditions – including fundamental rights like equal pay\, collective bargaining\, and protection from harassment. \nEducation and training are central to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The vision of the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030 is fully captured by Sustainable Development Goal 4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Education 2030 devotes considerable attention to technical and vocational skills development\, specifically regarding access to affordable quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET); the acquisition of technical and vocational skills for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship; the elimination of gender disparity and ensuring access for the vulnerable. In this context\, TVET is expected to address the multiple demands of an economic\, social and environmental nature by helping youth and adults develop the skills they need for employment\, decent work and entrepreneurship\, promoting equitable\, inclusive and sustainable economic growth\, and supporting transitions to green economies and environmental sustainability. TVET can equip youth with the skills required to access the world of work\, including skills for self-employment. TVET can also improve responsiveness to changing skill-demands by companies and communities\, increase productivity and increase wage levels. TVET can reduce access barriers to the world of work\, for example through work-based learning\, and ensuring that skills gained are recognised and certified. TVET can also offer skills development opportunities for low-skilled people who are under- or unemployed\, out of school youth and individuals not in education\, employment and training (NEETs). \nLinks:\nWorld Youth Skills Day

SUMMARY:48th session of the World Heritage Committee 2026
DESCRIPTION:The World Heritage Committee meets once a year for an ordinary session to discuss the management of existing World Heritage Sites\, and accept nominations by countries. \nExtraordinary meetings can be convened at the request of two-thirds of the state members. Meetings are held within the territory of state members of the World Heritage Committee at their invitation. Rotation between regions and cultures is a consideration for selection and the location for the next session is chosen by the committee at the end of each session. The World Heritage Committee is a committee of the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization that selects the sites to be listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites\, including the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger\, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States Parties. It comprises representatives from 21 state parties that are elected by the General Assembly of States Parties for a four-year term. These parties vote on decisions and proposals related to the World Heritage Convention and World Heritage List. According to the World Heritage Convention\, a committee member’s term of office is six years. However many States Parties choose to voluntarily limit their term to four years\, in order to give other States Parties an opportunity to serve. All members elected at the 15th General Assembly (2005) voluntarily chose to reduce their term of office from six to four years. Deliberations of the World Heritage Committee are aided by three advisory bodies\, the IUCN\, ICOMOS and ICCROM. \nLinks:\n48th session of the World Heritage Committee

SUMMARY:World #ChessDay / Wereld Schaakdag 2026
DESCRIPTION:On 12 December 2019\, the General Assembly proclaimed 20 July as World Chess Day to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. \nChess is a two player strategy board game where the aim is to move different types of playing piece\, each with a prescribed set of possible moves\, around a chequered square board trying to capture the opponents ‘king’ piece. Today there are over 2\,000 identifiable variants of the game. One theory is that an early game similar to chess called Chaturanga originated in Northern Indian Subcontinent during the Gupta period (~ 319 – 543 CE) and spread along the Silk Roads west to Persia. Whilst modern Chess is believed to have been derived from Chaturanga means ‘four divisions’ referring either to the divisions of the playing pieces into infantry\, cavalry\, elephantry and chariotry (pieces which in the modern game became the pawn\, knight\, bishop and rook)\, or to the fact that the game was played by four players. Chatrang\, and later Shatranj\, was the name given to the game when it arrived in Sassanid Persia around 600 CE. \nThe earliest reference to the game comes from a Persian manuscript of around 600 CE\, which describes an ambassador from the Indian Subcontinent visiting king Khosrow I (531 – 579 CE) and presenting him with the game as a gift. From there it spread along the Silk to other regions including the Arabian Peninsula and Byzantium. In 900 CE\, Abbasid chess masters al-Suli and al-Lajlaj composed works on the techniques and strategy of the game\, and by 1000 CE Chess was popular across Europe\, and in Russia where it was introduced from the Eurasian Steppe. The Alfonso manuscripts\, also known as the Libro de los Juegos (Book of Games)\, a medieval collection of texts on three different types of popular game from the 13th century CE describe the game of Chess as very similar to Persian Shatranj in rules and gameplay. \nUnder initiative of FIDE\, July 20 has been observed as International Chess Day by chess players around the world since 1966. The designation of World Chess Day of the UN will not only recognize the important role of the FIDE in supporting international cooperation for chess activity and aiming to improve friendly harmony among all peoples of the world\, but also to provide an important platform to foster\, dialogue\, solidarity and culture of peace. \nThe United Nations recognizes that sports\, the arts and physical activity have the power to change perceptions\, prejudices and behaviours\, as well as to inspire people\, break down racial and political barriers\, combat discrimination and defuse conflict\, and therefore contribute in promoting education\, sustainable development\, peace\, cooperation\, solidarity\, social inclusion and health at the local\, regional and international levels. Chess is one of the most ancient\, intellectual and cultural games\, with a combination of sport\, scientific thinking and elements of art. As an affordable and inclusive activity\, it can be exercised anywhere and played by all\, across the barriers of language\, age\, gender\, physical ability or social status. \nChess is a global game\, which promotes fairness\, inclusion and mutual respect\, and noting in this regard that it can contribute to an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding among peoples and nations. Chess also offers important opportunities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals\, including strengthening education\, realizing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls and fostering inclusion\, tolerance\, mutual understanding and respect. \nLinks:\nWorld Chess Day

SUMMARY:The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026
DESCRIPTION:Global hunger declined for a third consecutive year in 2025\, demonstrating that progress is possible. However\, the improvements remain fragile\, unevenly distributed and insufficient to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030\, according to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026 (SOFI 2026) report\, released on Tuesday by five United Nations specialized agencies. \nThe report estimates that 7.8 percent of the global population faced hunger in 2025\, down from 8.1 percent in 2024 and 8.6 percent in 2022\, confirming a sustained\, albeit slow\, improvement. This means that around 645 million people were affected by hunger in 2025\, representing a reduction of nearly 14 million compared to 2024 and 43 million compared to 2022. Despite global progress\, recovery remains uneven across regions. Asia\, together with Latin America and the Caribbean\, has recorded steady improvements in recent years. In contrast\, Africa is now home to approximately 309 million hungry people\, compared with 292 million in Asia. Although Africa’s previously rising trend is beginning to stabilize\, with the share of its population facing hunger decreasing from 20.3 percent in 2024 to 20.0 percent in 2025\, the continent now has the highest number of hungry people in absolute terms amid a rapidly growing population. Broader measures of food access tell a similar story. In 2025\, an estimated 25.8 percent of the global population (around 2.1 billion people) experienced moderate or severe food insecurity\, meaning they were at times forced to compromise on the quality or quantity of the food they ate. This is down from 27.1 percent in 2024 and 28.7 percent in 2020 – equivalent to nearly 86 million fewer people than in 2024 and 135 million fewer than in 2020\, though still above pre-pandemic levels. Regional disparities remain stark. More than half of Africa’s population (56.6 percent) faced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2025\, compared to 20.3 percent in Asia\, 22.9 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean\, and 8.7 percent in Northern America and Europe. Food insecurity also continues to be more prevalent in rural areas than in peri-urban and urban areas\, while women remain disproportionately affected\, although the gender gap narrowed slightly in 2025. \nLinks:\nThe State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026

SUMMARY:World #DrowningPrevention Day / Dag ter voorkoming van verdrinking 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Drowning Prevention Day\, declared through the April 2021 UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/75/273 “Global drowning prevention”\, is held annually on 25 July. \nThis global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and to offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. All stakeholders – governments\, UN agencies\, civil society organizations\, the private sector\, academia and individuals – are invited to mark World Drowning Prevention Day by highlighting the need for urgent\, coordinated and multi-sectoral action on proven measures such as: \n\ninstalling barriers controlling access to water;\nproviding safe places away from water such as crèches for pre-school children with capable childcare;\nteaching swimming\, water safety and safe rescue skills;\ntraining bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation;\nsetting and enforcing safe boating\, shipping and ferry regulations;\nimproving flood risk management.\n\nThe UN General Assembly resolution invited WHO to coordinate actions on drowning prevention within the UN system. In this capacity\, WHO leads preparations for World Drowning Prevention Day by producing related advocacy materials\, hosting a global launch event and supporting national and local activities in countries and communities around the world. Every year\, an estimated 236\,000 people drown\, making drowning a major public health problem worldwide. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death globally for children and young people aged 1-24 years. Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death\, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths. The global burden of death from drowning is felt in all economies and regions\, however: \n\nlow- and middle-income countries account for over 90% of unintentional drowning deaths;\nover half of the world’s drowning occurs in the WHO Western Pacific Region and WHO South-East Asia Region;\ndrowning death rates are highest in the WHO Western Pacific Region\, and are 27-32 times higher than those seen in the United Kingdom or Germany\, respectively.\n\nLinks:\nWorld Drowning Prevention Day \nWHO’s work on drowning prevention \nA guide to preventing drowning \n146 mensen verdronken in 2024 \n100 inwoners verdronken in 2025\, vooral 60-plussers

SUMMARY:Day on Judicial Well-being 2026
DESCRIPTION:Judges and other judicial officers such as magistrates\, court commissioners\, and arbitrators shoulder a profound responsibility – upholding the rule of law\, protecting rights\, and ensuring that justice is impartial and fair. \nBut behind the bench\, many judges struggle in silence. Long hours\, isolation\, and the emotional toll of decision-making can affect their well-being\, ultimately influencing the quality of justice. Corruption thrives where integrity falters. A judiciary under stress is more vulnerable to external influence\, conflicts of interest\, and erosion of public confidence. The United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) \, especially Article 11\, acknowledges this danger and calls for safeguarding the independence and integrity of the judiciary. Judicial well-being is a prerequisite for judicial independence\, integrity\, and efficiency. When judges are supported\, they are better equipped to resist undue influence\, uphold ethical standards\, and deliver justice fairly and competently. The path to international recognition began with the Regional Judicial Conference on Integrity and Judicial Well-being\, held in Nauru in July 2024. Organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with the Nauru Judiciary\, the gathering brought together nearly twenty judicial leaders and global experts to confront a shared concern: judges around the world are under pressure\, often without the resources or acknowledgment they need. On 25 July 2024\, they adopted the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-being which recognizes that the health and well-being of judges is critical to ensuring judicial integrity\, independence\, and the quality of justice delivered to the public. \nLinks:\nDay on Judicial Well-being

SUMMARY:75th Anniversary of the Refugee Convention / Verdrag betreffende de status van vluchtelingen / Convention relating to the Status of Refugees - ondertekening (1951)
DESCRIPTION:Het Verdrag betreffende de status van vluchtelingen of Vluchtelingenverdrag (Convention relating to the Status of Refugees) werd op 28 juli 1951 opgesteld tijdens een door de Verenigde Naties georganiseerde conventie na voorbereidende beraadslagingen in 1950 te New York en in 1951 te Genève. \nLinks:\nThe 1951 Refugee Convention and 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees \nMensen op de vlucht help je. SUMMARY:#HumanTrafficking #EndHumanTrafficking World Day Against Trafficking in Persons / Werelddag tegen Mensenhandel 2026
DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking is a crime that exploits children\, men and women for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex. \nTrafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year\, thousands of men\, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers\, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking\, whether as a country of origin\, transit or destination for victims. UNODC\, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto\, assists States in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (Trafficking in Persons Protocol). The Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment\, transportation\, transfer\, harbouring or receipt of persons\, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion\, of abduction\, of fraud\, of deception\, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person\, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include\, at a minimum\, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation\, forced labour or services\, slavery or practices similar to slavery\, servitude or the removal of organs. The World Day against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/68/192. Theme 2026\, “Trapped Behind the Scam\,” draws attention to a rapidly expanding form of human trafficking in which transnational organized crime groups exploit people to carry out industrial-scale financial fraud. Victims are trafficked for forced criminality and compelled to participate in online scam operations. This form of exploitation is closely linked to cybercrime\, financial fraud\, money laundering\, and corruption\, demonstrating the increasingly interconnected nature of organized crime. \nLinks:\nWorld Day Against Trafficking in Persons – 30 July

SUMMARY:Day of Friendship / Dag van de Vriendschap 2026
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples\, countries\, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. \nThe resolution places emphasis on involving young people\, as future leaders\, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity. To mark the International Day of Friendship the UN encourages governments\, international organizations and civil society groups to hold events\, activities and initiatives that contribute to the efforts of the international community towards promoting a dialogue among civilizations\, solidarity\, mutual understanding and reconciliation. The International Day of Friendship is an initiative that follows on the proposal made by UNESCO defining the Culture of Peace as a set of values\, attitudes and behaviours that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes with a view to solving problems. It was then adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997. In a time when the noise of division grows louder — fueled by wars\, conflicts\, inequality\, and fear — friendship feels almost radical in its simplicity. It doesn’t arrive with fanfare or policy; it doesn’t need speeches or signatures. It begins with something quieter: a conversation\, a shared moment\, a willingness to see one another not as strangers but as fellow travelers through the human experience. In this year’s observance of the International Day of Friendship\, we’re reminded that real peace is forged not only in negotiation halls or by writing into treaties — it’s built\, thread by thread\, in the trust we extend to one another in daily life. Friendship\, especially among young people\, holds a special kind of power. It can cross languages\, faiths\, and histories that might otherwise divide us. It invites us to listen before we judge\, to stay when it’s easier to walk away. And when nurtured across cultures and communities\, friendship becomes more than a bond—it becomes a blueprint for reconciliation. It teaches us that understanding isn’t a grand achievement; it’s a habit\, a practice\, a way of moving through the world that says ‘your well-being matters to me too’. This year\, as the world faces profound ruptures — between nations\, within societies\, even within families — the call to friendship is not sentimental. It’s essential. It’s about reaching across what breaks us and daring to believe in something better. It is a call to imagine a future where difference doesn’t mean distance\, where trust is stronger than fear. Through friendship\, we don’t just cope with the world as it is — we begin to shape the world as it could be. \nLinks:\nDay of Friendship 30 July
