SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). Scholars of ESG say that their research is instrumental in addressing governance-related needs of UNDOS. \nFirst\, it can identify salient frames for ocean problems that trigger policy action. \nSecond\, it can inform stakeholder involvement by mapping powerful and marginalized interests and suggesting pathways towards more inclusive participation. \nThird\, it can support viable and effective ocean solutions based on insights into political support coalitions and governance design. \nMainstreaming of governance research into ocean science has also been recommended: The ESG community can facilitate this mainstreaming by enhancing knowledge cumulation around ocean issues within the network; engaging more strongly in the production of actionable and action-oriented knowledge; and seeking integration into inter- and transdisciplinary ocean research. Sub-topics where ESG with regards to ocean governance can be applied are for example governance issues around deep sea mining\, ocean acidification\, marine biodiversity. \nLinks:\nUN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development \n2025 UN Ocean Conference \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities \n#30thSessionCouncil #DeepSeabed #TheArea #UNCLOS 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority Part I (TV ISA Web TV) \nVPRO #Tegenlicht : de strijd om de diepzee (TV internet / NPO 2) \nLive session with Free Range Ocean

SUMMARY:Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. This new Decade of Action provides an opportunity for harnessing the successes and lessons of previous years and building upon them to save more lives. \nLinks:\nDecade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 \n#WDoR2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2023

SUMMARY:United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues UNPFII Session 2026
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII or PFII) is the UN’s central coordinating body for matters relating to the concerns and rights of the world’s indigenous peoples. \nThere are more than 370 million indigenous people (also known as native\, original\, aboriginal and first peoples) in some 70 countries worldwide. The forum was created on 28 July 2000 by resolution 2000/22\, as an outcome of the UN’s International Year for the World’s Indigenous People in 1993\, within the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995–2004). It is an advisory body within the framework of the United Nations System that reports to the UN‘s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). More specifically\, the Permanent Forum: \n\nprovides expert advice and recommendations on Indigenous issues to the Council\, as well as to programmes\, funds and agencies of the United Nations\, through ECOSOC;\nraises awareness and promotes the integration and coordination of activities related to Indigenous issues within the UN system;\nprepares and disseminates information on Indigenous issues;\npromotes respect for and full application of the provisions of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and follow up the effectiveness of this Declaration (Art. 42 UNDRIP).\n\nThe first meeting of the Permanent Forum was held in May 2002\, with yearly sessions thereafter. The Forum usually meets for 10 days each year\, at the UN Headquarters in New York. According to the ECOSOC resolution E/2000/22\, the Forum may also meet at the UN Office in Geneva or at such other place that it decides. In addition to the six mandated areas (economic and social development\, culture\, the environment\, education\, health and human rights)\, each session is thematically focused on a specific issue. The Permanent Forum is one of three UN bodies that is mandated to deal specifically with Indigenous Peoples’ issues. The others are the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Permanent Forum’s engagement and role in promoting Indigenous Peoples’ rights are made possible through the Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues\, which overall facilitates follow-up to the Forum’s recommendations\, awareness raising and outreach on Indigenous issues as well as representation and participation of Permanent Forum members at international meetings of significance for its mandate. In addition\, the Trust Fund provides support for the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. DESA is charged with the overall management of the Trust Fund\, which is placed under the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch-Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. 2026 Theme: “Ensuring Indigenous Peoples’ health\, including in the context of conflict” \nLinks:\nUnited Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)

SUMMARY:Day of Living Together in Peace 2026
DESCRIPTION:Living together in peace is all about accepting differences and having the ability to listen to\, recognize\, respect and appreciate others\, as well as living in a peaceful and united way. \nThe UN General-Assembly\, in its resolution 72/130\, declared 16 May the International Day of Living Together in Peace\, as a means of regularly mobilizing the efforts of the international community to promote peace\, tolerance\, inclusion\, understanding and solidarity. The Day aims to uphold the desire to live and act together\, united in differences and diversity\, in order to build a sustainable world of peace\, solidarity and harmony. The Day invites countries to further promote reconciliation to help to ensure peace and sustainable development\, including by working with communities\, faith leaders and other relevant actors\, through reconciliatory measures and acts of service and by encouraging forgiveness and compassion among individuals. \nFollowing the devastation of the Second World War\, the United Nations was established to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. One of its purposes is to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems\, including by promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race\, sex\, language or religion. In 1997\, the General-Assembly proclaimed – by its resolution 52/15 — the year 2000 as the “International Year for a Culture of Peace”. In 1998\, it proclaimed the period 2001-2010 as the “International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for Children of the World.” In 1999\, The General-Assembly adopted\, by resolution 53/243\, the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace\, which serves as the universal mandate for the international community\, particularly the United Nations system\, to promote a culture of peace and non-violence that benefits all of humanity\, including future generations. \nThe declaration came about as a result of the long-held and cherished concept — contained within the Constitution of UNESCO — that “since wars begin in the minds of men\, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed.” The Declaration embraces the principle that peace is not merely the absence of conflict\, but also requires a positive\, dynamic participatory process\, in which dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are resolved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation. The Declaration also recognizes that to fulfill such an aspiration\, there is a need to eliminate all forms of discrimination and intolerance\, including those based on race\, color\, sex\, language\, religion\, political or other opinion\, national\, ethnic or social origin\, property\, disability\, birth or other status. 2026 Theme: Building Trust through Dialogue\, Inclusion and Reconciliation. \nLinks:\nDay of Living Together in Peace

SUMMARY:#WHA79 79th World Health Assembly
DESCRIPTION:The World Health Assembly (WHA) is the forum through which the World Health Organization (WHO) is governed by its 193 member states\, it is the world’s highest health policy setting body and is composed of health ministers from member states. \nThe members of the WHA generally meet every year in May in Geneva\, Switzerland\, at the Palace of Nations\, the location of WHO Headquarters. The main tasks of the WHA are to decide major policy questions\, as well as to approve the WHO work programme and budget and elect its Director-General (every fifth year) and annually to elect ten members to renew part of its executive board. Its main functions are to determine the policies of the Organization\, supervise financial policies\, and review and approve the proposed programme budget. The Seventy-ninth World Health Assembly (WHA79) takes place in Geneva\, Switzerland from 18 to 23 May 2026\, bringing together delegations from WHO Member States to set global health policy and advance the Organization’s strategic priorities. It will build upon the momentum of the last year’s 78th World Health Assembly\, which adopted the Global Action Plan on Climate Change and Health\, an updated road map for an enhanced global response to the adverse health effects of air pollution\, and the elevation of climate change as the first strategic objective of WHO’s Fourteenth General Programme of Work (GPW14\, 2025–2028). Looking forward to COP31\, co-hosted by Türkiye and Australia\, this Assembly offers an opportunity for the global climate and health community to convene and sustain the political momentum secured at WHA78. \nLinks:\n79th World Health Assembly \nKlimaatverandering bedreigt ook de volksgezondheid\, waarschuwen experts

SUMMARY:Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories 2026
DESCRIPTION:In the UN Charter\, a Non-Self-Governing Territory is defined as a territory “whose people have not yet attained a full measure of self-government.” \nIn 1946\, several UN Member States identified a number of territories under their administration that were not self-governing and placed them on a UN list. Countries administering Non-Self-Governing Territories are called administering Powers. As a result of the decolonization process over the years\, most of the territories were removed from the list. Chapter XI of the UN Charter – the Declaration regarding Non-Self-Governing Territories – provides that Member States administering Territories\, which have not attained self-government recognize “that the interests of the inhabitants of these territories are paramount” and accept as a “sacred trust” the obligation to promote their well-being. Furthermore\, administering Powers\, in addition to ensuring the political\, economic\, social and educational advancement of the peoples\, undertake to assist them in developing self-government and free political institutions. Administering Powers also have an obligation to transmit regularly to the Secretary-General information on the economic\, social and educational conditions in the territories under their administration. In a later agreement\, the UN General Assembly\, by its resolution 54/91 of 6 December 1999\, urged the administering Powers concerned to take effective measures to safeguard and guarantee the inalienable rights of the peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territories to their natural resources\, including land\, and to establish and maintain control over the future development of those resources\, and requested the administering Powers to take all necessary steps to protect the property rights of the peoples of those territories. It also urged all States\, directly and through their action in the specialized agencies and other organizations of the United Nations system\, to provide moral and material assistance to the peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territories. Through the same resolution\, the General Assembly requested the annual observance of the Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories. In 2026\, there are 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories remaining. \nLinks:\nWeek of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories

SUMMARY:Day of UN Peacekeepers 2026
DESCRIPTION:On the Day of UN Peacekeepers\, the United Nations (UN) honour peacekeepers past and present and reaffirm our shared responsibility to respect and strengthen their work. \nFor nearly 80 years\, UN peacekeepers have delivered tangible change to communities across the globe. From Liberia and Namibia to Cambodia\, Sierra Leone and Timor-Leste\, their presence has been life-saving and transformative in some of the most volatile political and security contexts\, guiding countries from conflict towards sustainable peace. Observed under the theme “Invest in Peace” the 2026 International Day calls for decisive action to ensure civilian and military peacekeepers have the resources to carry out their vital mandates. More than 51\,000 civilians\, military\, and police personnel serve in 11 UN peacekeeping missions\, confronting increasingly complex and interconnected challenges shaped by a shifting geopolitical landscape. In this era of rising tensions\, peacekeeping is a proven and cost-effective way to restore stability and hope. The International Day pays tribute to their unwavering service and sacrifice\, as well as the resilience of the communities they support. It also solemnly honors the nearly 4\,500 peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace\, including 59 in 2025 alone. \nLinks:\nDay of UN Peacekeepers \n

SUMMARY:#InternationalDayOfPotato Day of Potato 2026
DESCRIPTION:On 30 May\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) spotlights the potato\, Solanum tuberosum (L.) – a crop regularly consumed by billions of people\, potatoes are a key crop across diverse farming systems globally\, ranging from smallholders producing diverse heirloom varieties by hand in the Andes\, to vast commercial\, mechanized farms in different continents. \nPotatoes contribute to the food security and nutrition as well as and livelihoods and employment of people in rural and urban areas the world over. The Day is an opportunity to build on the International Year of the Potato\, which was observed in 2008. The observance will also be used to underscore the importance of the crop to combating hunger and poverty and addressing environmental threats to agrifood systems. The roles of small-scale family farmers\, a significant proportion of whom are women\, in safeguarding the wide spectrum of the crop’s diversity\, will also be recognized\, while the cultural and culinary dimensions of the crop’s cultivation and consumption will be celebrated. The third observance of the International Day of Potato will be on 29 May 2026 (as 30 May falls on a Saturday)\, with the theme Where potatoes grow\, livelihoods flourish. The theme positions the role of potatoes in strengthening livelihoods for farmers and value chain actors —from the highlands of the Andes to Africa\, Europe\, Asia and beyond. By advancing potato farming and value chain development\, the crop contributes to poverty reduction\, resilience and more inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems.
