SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). Scholars of ESG say that their research is instrumental in addressing governance-related needs of UNDOS. \nFirst\, it can identify salient frames for ocean problems that trigger policy action. \nSecond\, it can inform stakeholder involvement by mapping powerful and marginalized interests and suggesting pathways towards more inclusive participation. \nThird\, it can support viable and effective ocean solutions based on insights into political support coalitions and governance design. \nMainstreaming of governance research into ocean science has also been recommended: The ESG community can facilitate this mainstreaming by enhancing knowledge cumulation around ocean issues within the network; engaging more strongly in the production of actionable and action-oriented knowledge; and seeking integration into inter- and transdisciplinary ocean research. Sub-topics where ESG with regards to ocean governance can be applied are for example governance issues around deep sea mining\, ocean acidification\, marine biodiversity. \nLinks:\nUN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development \n2025 UN Ocean Conference \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities \n#30thSessionCouncil #DeepSeabed #TheArea #UNCLOS 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority Part I (TV ISA Web TV) \nVPRO #Tegenlicht : de strijd om de diepzee (TV internet / NPO 2) \nLive session with Free Range Ocean

SUMMARY:Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. This new Decade of Action provides an opportunity for harnessing the successes and lessons of previous years and building upon them to save more lives. \nLinks:\nDecade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 \n#WDoR2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2023

SUMMARY:United Nations Human Rights Council Sixty-first session
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a United Nations body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world\, the Council has 47 members elected for staggered three-year terms on a regional group basis. \nThe headquarters of the Council are at the United Nations Office at Geneva in Switzerland. The Council investigates allegations of breaches of human rights in United Nations member states and addresses thematic human rights issues like freedom of association and assembly\, freedom of expression\, freedom of belief and religion\, women’s rights\, LGBT rights\, and the rights of racial and ethnic minorities. The Council was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 15 March 2006 to replace the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR\, herein CHR). The Council works closely with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and engages the United Nations special procedures. The Council has been strongly criticized for including member countries that engage in human rights abuses. The UNHRC holds regular sessions three times a year\, in March\, June\, and September. The UNHRC can decide at any time to hold a special session to address human rights violations and emergencies\, at the request of one-third of the member states. \nLinks:\nHuman Rights Council Opens Sixty-First Regular Session\, Holds Moment of Silence for Victims of Human Rights Violations Around the World \n61st session of the Human Rights Council (23 February – 31 March 2026) \nTorture and genocide : Report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967\, Francesca Albanese – publication

SUMMARY:#WorldAutismAwarenessDay Wereld Autisme Bewustwording Dag 2026

SUMMARY:Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2026
DESCRIPTION:On 8 December 2005\, the General Assembly declared that 4 April of each year shall be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. \nIt called for continued efforts by States\, with the assistance of the United Nations and relevant organizations\, to foster the establishment and development of national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety\, health and lives of the civilian population\, or an impediment to social and economic development at the national and local levels. Established in 1997\, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines\, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action\, leading operational responses at the country level\, and in support of peace operations\, as well as through the development of standards\, policies and norms. \nIn 2026\, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action will be commemorated under the theme “Invest in Peace; Invest in Mine Action.” This theme draws out the foundational importance of lands being cleared from explosive threats and communities living in the absence of fear from these indiscriminate weapons for peace to be able to prosper. Mines\, explosive remnants of war\, and improvised explosive devices continue to cause death and injury\, especially in situations of armed conflict. On average\, one person is killed or injured by such explosive device every hour. Many children are among the victims. The use of improvised explosive devices has expanded\, terrorizing civilians and threatening humanitarian actors and United Nations missions and personnel. Mine action saves lives\, provides security\, restores dignity\, unlocks land for productive use\, and creates the conditions for long-term stability. It transforms hazardous land into safe\, productive spaces. It enables humanitarian access\, facilitates development\, supports stabilization efforts\, and lays the groundwork for durable peace. Investing in mine action is therefore not only a technical necessity – it is a strategic investment in peacebuilding\, recovery\, and sustainable development. \nLinks:\nDay for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action \nIMAD 2026 \nInternational Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action – 4 April 2026

SUMMARY:Day of Sport for Development and Peace / Dag van Sport voor Ontwikkeling en Vrede 2026
DESCRIPTION:The General Assembly of the United Nations decided to proclaim 6 April as “International Day of Sport for Development and Peace” (IDSDP)\, this date commemorates the inauguration\, in 1896\, of the first Olympic games of the modern era\, in Athens (Greece). \nOn August 23\, 2013\, the General Assembly of the United Nations in Resolution 67/296 decides to proclaim on April 6 International Day of the Sport for the Development and the Peace. The UN\, with this commemoration\, “invites States\, the United Nations system and in particular the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace\, relevant international organizations\, and international\, regional and national sports organizations\, civil society\, including non-governmental organizations and the private sector\, and all other relevant stakeholders to cooperate\, observe and raise awareness of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace”. IDSDP presents an opportunity to recognize the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and in people’s lives across the globe. Sport has the power to change the world; it is a fundamental right and a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and promote sustainable development and peace\, as well as solidarity and respect for all. From empowering women and girls\, young people\, persons with disabilities\, and other marginalized groups to advancing health\, sustainability\, and education objectives\, sport offers tremendous potential for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and for promoting peace and human rights. The United Nations has long recognized the power and universality of sport\, using it to unite individuals and groups through supporting sport for development efforts\, participating in events from the global to the grassroots level\, and developing its own sports-related campaigns and initiatives. \nThe 2026 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace will spotlight the theme “Sport: Building Bridges\, Breaking Barriers\,” underscoring sport’s unique capacity to foster connection\, inclusion\, and peace in an increasingly fragmented world. As a universal language that transcends cultural\, social\, and boundaries\, sport serves as a powerful catalyst for social transformation. Sport connects communities across borders and generations\, reducing isolation among marginalized groups\, and creating spaces for dialogue\, solidarity\, and mutual respect. The 2026 International Day will highlight evidence-based approaches and best practices demonstrating how sport contributes measurably to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, particularly in advancing health\, gender equality\, reduced inequalities\, and peaceful\, inclusive societies. Through dialogue\, partnerships\, and shared experiences\, IDSDP 2026 will reaffirm sport’s role as a strategic tool for building bridges between people and breaking down barriers to inclusion\, leaving no one behind. \nLinks:\nInternational Day of Sport for Development and Peace 6 April \n\nInternational Day of Sport for Development and Peace

SUMMARY:World Health Day / Wereldgezondheidsdag 2026
DESCRIPTION:The World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7 April\, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO)\, as well as other related organizations. \nIn 1948\, the WHO hold the First World Health Assembly. The Assembly decided to celebrate 7 April of each year\, with effect from 1950\, as the World Health Day. The World Health Day is held to mark WHO’s founding\, and is seen as an opportunity by the organization to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year. The WHO organizes international\, regional and local events on the Day related to a particular theme. World Health Day is acknowledged by various governments and non-governmental organizations with interests in public health issues\, who also organize activities and highlight their support in media reports\, such as the Global Health Council. World Health Day is one of eight official global health campaigns marked by WHO\, along with World Tuberculosis Day\, World Immunization Week\, World Malaria Day\, World No Tobacco Day\, World AIDS Day\, World Blood Donor Day\, and World Hepatitis Day. The theme for World Health Day 2025 is ‘Healthy beginnings\, hopeful futures’. \nLinks:\nWorld Health Day \nMaand zonder suiker: zinvol of onzin?

SUMMARY:One Health Summit 2026
DESCRIPTION:At the One Health Summit\, the Quadripartite collaboration\, bringing together the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)\, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)\, joined global leaders and partners in calling for strengthened investment and partnership\, and accelerated country-level implementation of the One Health approach. \nAgainst a backdrop of converging crisis\, including climate pressures\, pollution\, environmental degradation and growing strain on food systems\, and increasing risks to animal health\, contributing to the acceleration of health threats and pandemic risk\, the Summit\, hosted by France\, emphasized that stronger political commitment and coordinated multilateral action are critical to safeguard the health of humans\, animals and ecosystems alike. Building on their shared commitment\, the Quadripartite partners presented a coordinated package of priority deliverables aimed at supporting country-level implementation. These actions\, led jointly or individually\, in line with each agency’s respective mandate\, reflect a collective ambition to translate political momentum into operational impact. \nLinks:\nQuadripartite partners and global stakeholders step up coordinated action at One Health Summit \nOne Health

SUMMARY:#10April #InternationalDayOfVolcanoes #JournéeInternationaleDesVolcans #GiornataInternazionaleDeiVulcani #DiaInternacionalDeLosVolcanes – petition 2026
DESCRIPTION:Petition proposing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ to be observed officially by the United Nations and we are asking that the U.N. General Assembly please consider a resolution for establishing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ on 10th April every year. \nTanguy De Saint-Cyr\, owner of French volcano tour company\, that came up with the concept for an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ and Jeannie Curtis\, a New Zealand technical writer and educator are proposing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ to be officially recognised and observed by the United Nations and ask that the General Assembly please consider a resolution for establishing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ on 10th April. The date of 10th April has no recognised international day and we propose this date for the following reason: On 10 April 1815 Gunung (Mount) Tambora in Indonesia erupted and generated massive pyroclastic flows and tsunami that instantly killed 10\,000 locals\, who were unaware of the danger. The massive eruption injected huge amounts of aerosols into the Earth’s stratosphere\, causing a global haze which reflected back the incoming sunlight and cooled our planet by half a degree (celsius). This affected the planet’s climate for three years\, causing crop failure and famine\, resulting in up to 60\,000 more human deaths globally – as well as affecting animals\, fauna and agriculture. SUMMARY:#17April Day of Peasant Struggles / Dag van de Boerenstrijd / 30th anniversary of the Eldorado do Carajás Massacre 2026
DESCRIPTION:Every April 17th – the International Day of Peasant Struggle – with living memory and rebellion inherited from 19 landless Peasants murdered with impunity in the Eldorado do Carajás Massacre in Brazil\, Via Campesina call upon their members\, friends and allies to come together with strong actions worldwide\, affirming that the only way to obtain Peasant Rights is with Agrarian Reform and Social Justice. \nOn 17 December 2018\, the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York adopted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (RES/73/165). The Declaration is an international legal instrument. Via Campesina wants to mobilize for its real implementation in our territories\, and this implies that the State guarantees access to the land\, the protection of seeds facing commercialization\, putting a stop to evictions and deaths\, as well as creating measures against agrochemicals; social justice means that those who feed the world live in dignified conditions and in peace in the countryside\, without being prosecuted for defending their rights and territories. In this current context of extractivism and the alarming rate at which lands are forcefully grabbed from the Peasant people\, the urgency of Agrarian Reform proves strategic. Particularly so\, since the neoliberal offensive in the whole world is accompanied by the loss of the rights of the working class and consequently of the peasantry. \nLinks:\nDay of Peasant Struggles

SUMMARY:United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues UNPFII Session 2026
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII or PFII) is the UN’s central coordinating body for matters relating to the concerns and rights of the world’s indigenous peoples. \nThere are more than 370 million indigenous people (also known as native\, original\, aboriginal and first peoples) in some 70 countries worldwide. The forum was created on 28 July 2000 by resolution 2000/22\, as an outcome of the UN’s International Year for the World’s Indigenous People in 1993\, within the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995–2004). It is an advisory body within the framework of the United Nations System that reports to the UN‘s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). More specifically\, the Permanent Forum: \n\nprovides expert advice and recommendations on Indigenous issues to the Council\, as well as to programmes\, funds and agencies of the United Nations\, through ECOSOC;\nraises awareness and promotes the integration and coordination of activities related to Indigenous issues within the UN system;\nprepares and disseminates information on Indigenous issues;\npromotes respect for and full application of the provisions of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and follow up the effectiveness of this Declaration (Art. 42 UNDRIP).\n\nThe first meeting of the Permanent Forum was held in May 2002\, with yearly sessions thereafter. The Forum usually meets for 10 days each year\, at the UN Headquarters in New York. According to the ECOSOC resolution E/2000/22\, the Forum may also meet at the UN Office in Geneva or at such other place that it decides. In addition to the six mandated areas (economic and social development\, culture\, the environment\, education\, health and human rights)\, each session is thematically focused on a specific issue. The Permanent Forum is one of three UN bodies that is mandated to deal specifically with Indigenous Peoples’ issues. The others are the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Permanent Forum’s engagement and role in promoting Indigenous Peoples’ rights are made possible through the Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues\, which overall facilitates follow-up to the Forum’s recommendations\, awareness raising and outreach on Indigenous issues as well as representation and participation of Permanent Forum members at international meetings of significance for its mandate. In addition\, the Trust Fund provides support for the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. DESA is charged with the overall management of the Trust Fund\, which is placed under the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch-Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. 2026 Theme: “Ensuring Indigenous Peoples’ health\, including in the context of conflict” \nLinks:\nUnited Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)

SUMMARY:Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes 2026
DESCRIPTION:In April 2025\, the United Nations General Assembly designated 29 April as the International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes inviting all Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other relevant international organizations to collaborate on the commemoration. \nIn doing so\, the General Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and recalled the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030\, recognizing that disasters continue to undermine sustainable development. These commitments underscore that understanding disaster risk\, strengthening prevention and mitigation\, and improving preparedness and effective response are essential to protecting lives and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Earthquakes are among the deadliest natural hazards\, often striking without warning and causing devastating loss of life and long lasting social\, economic\, and psychological harm. Recent earthquakes in countries such as Myanmar and Afghanistan are stark reminders of how these events can destroy infrastructure\, displace entire communities\, and affect generations long after the ground stops shaking. Their impact is severe and measurable. Since 1900\, there have been at least 12 major earthquakes\, each of which killed more than 50\,000 people. Earthquakes also have substantial economic consequences\, accounting for more than a quarter of global disaster losses and causing trillions of dollars in damage over recent decades. Beyond direct destruction\, they can trigger fires\, tsunamis\, and landslides\, compounding damage across housing\, health\, education\, and livelihoods. Earthquake risk is driven by factors such as rapid urbanization in seismic areas\, weak or ageing infrastructure\, poverty\, inequality\, and poor enforcement of building codes—making risk informed development and resilient infrastructure essential. In acknowledgement of the grave consequences of these disasters\, the United Nations has established the International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes\, observed annually on 29 April\, and tasked the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) with facilitating its observance. The Day provides a moment to remember those lost and renew commitment to prevention\, preparedness\, and building back better\, in line with the priorities of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. \nLinks:\nWhen the ground shakes: Remembering victims and reducing future loss
