SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). Scholars of ESG say that their research is instrumental in addressing governance-related needs of UNDOS. \nFirst\, it can identify salient frames for ocean problems that trigger policy action. \nSecond\, it can inform stakeholder involvement by mapping powerful and marginalized interests and suggesting pathways towards more inclusive participation. \nThird\, it can support viable and effective ocean solutions based on insights into political support coalitions and governance design. \nMainstreaming of governance research into ocean science has also been recommended: The ESG community can facilitate this mainstreaming by enhancing knowledge cumulation around ocean issues within the network; engaging more strongly in the production of actionable and action-oriented knowledge; and seeking integration into inter- and transdisciplinary ocean research. Sub-topics where ESG with regards to ocean governance can be applied are for example governance issues around deep sea mining\, ocean acidification\, marine biodiversity. \nLinks:\nUN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development \n2025 UN Ocean Conference \nStop diepzeemijnbouw voor het begint / Stop diepzeemijnbouw : Noorwegen\, zeg NEE tegen diepzeemijnbouw! – petities \n#30thSessionCouncil #DeepSeabed #TheArea #UNCLOS 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority Part I (TV ISA Web TV) \nVPRO #Tegenlicht : de strijd om de diepzee (TV internet / NPO 2) \nLive session with Free Range Ocean

SUMMARY:Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. This new Decade of Action provides an opportunity for harnessing the successes and lessons of previous years and building upon them to save more lives. \nLinks:\nDecade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 \n#WDoR2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2023

SUMMARY:World Seagrass Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:In May 2022\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted A/RES/76/265 proclaiming 1 March as World Seagrass Day. \nThe resolution highlights the urgent need to raise awareness at all levels and to promote and facilitate actions for the conservation of seagrasses in order to contribute to their health and development\, bearing in mind that enhancing ecosystem services and functions is important for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Seagrasses are marine flowering plants that are found in shallow waters in many parts of the world\, from the tropics to the Arctic circle. They form extensive underwater meadows\, creating complex\, highly productive and biologically rich habitats. Covering only 0.1% of the ocean floor\, these seagrass meadows provide food and shelter to thousands of species of fish\, seahorses\, turtles\, etc. and sustain some of the world’s largest fisheries. They improve water quality by filtering\, cycling and storing nutrients and pollutants\, reducing contamination in seafood. Highly efficient carbon sinks\, they can store up to 18% of the world’s oceanic carbon\, making them a powerful nature-based solutions to tackle climate change impacts. Because they buffer ocean acidification\, they contribute to the resilience of the most vulnerable ecosystems and species\, such as coral reefs. And to the coastal populations\, they act as the first line of defense along coasts by reducing wave energy\, protecting people from the increasing risk of floods and storms. Despite its important contribution to sustainable development and climate change mitigation and adaptation\, this core component of marine biodiversity is in danger and only about a quarter of all meadows fall within marine protected areas. \nSeagrasses have been declining globally since the 1930s\, with the most recent census estimating that 7% of this key marine habitat is being lost worldwide per year. It was recently noted that 21% of seagrass species are categorized as Near Threatened\, Vulnerable and Endangered Species under the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. The combined pressures of coastal development\, pollution\, including land-based run-off\, climate change\, dredging and unregulated fishing and boating activities are key drivers of the degradation of seagrasses and their associated ecosystems. Despite a general global trend of seagrass loss\, some areas have shown abating declines or substantial recovery of seagrasses. These recoveries can often be attributed to human interventions reducing the effect of human-caused stressors. Seagrasses are critical for life underwater\, but also provide wide-ranging benefits to people on land. Raising awareness about their importance for community well-being\, whether through food security from fish production\, improved quality of water filtered by seagrasses\, protection of coasts from erosion\, storms and floods\, or carbon sequestration and storage will drive efforts around the world to conserve\, better manage and restore these ecosystems. Ultimately\, the protection and restoration of seagrass meadows will help countries achieve multiple economic\, societal and nutritional objectives\, aligning with and supported by policies implemented at the national\, regional or global levels. For example: \n\nThe benefits from conserving and restoring seagrass meadows can also help countries achieve 26 targets and indicators associated with ten Sustainable Development Goals.\nGiven the carbon storage and sequestration capacity of seagrass ecosystems\, including them in nationally determined contributions (NDCs) can help nations achieve their targets under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).\nInclusion of seagrass ecosystems in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)  is also critical for protecting the integrity of marine ecosystems and biodiversity.\nRestoration of seagrasses also provides countries with opportunities to achieve commitments to be made to the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration .\n\nInclusion of seagrass management\, conservation and restoration should be a critical component of sustainable blue economy strategies in the future. Projects are already underway in various countries\, and a few have even been selected as World Restoration Flagships initiatives. Chosen as best examples of large-scale and long-term ecosystem restoration\, these projects embody the 10 restoration principles  of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

SUMMARY:#ZeroDiscriminationDay 2026
DESCRIPTION:Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day celebrated by the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations\, the day aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all of the member countries of the UN. \nThe day was first celebrated on March 1\, 2014\, and was launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 27 February of that year with a major event in Beijing. In February 2017\, UNAIDS called on people to “make some noise around zero discrimination\, to speak up and prevent discrimination from standing in the way of achieving ambitions\, goals and dreams.” The day is particularly noted by organisations like UNAIDS that combat discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. “HIV related stigma and discrimination is pervasive and exists in almost every part of the world including our Liberia”\, according to Dr. Ivan F. Camanor\, Chairman of the National AIDS Commission of Liberia. The UN Development Programme also paid tribute in 2017 to LGBTI people with HIV/AIDS who face discrimination. Campaigners in India have used this day to speak out against laws making discrimination against the LGBTI community more likely\, especially during the previous campaign to repeal the law (Indian Penal Code\, s377) that used to criminalise homosexuality in that country\, before that law was overturned by the Indian Supreme Court in September 2018. In 2015\, Armenian Americans in California held a ‘die-in’ on Zero Discrimination Day to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide. \nIn 2026 is the theme ‘People first‘. \nLinks:\nZero Discrimination Day

SUMMARY:World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development / Wereld Techniek Dag voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling / World Federation of Engineering Organizations Hackathon 2026
DESCRIPTION:Engineering has always had an essential role in development and human welfare\, ensuring that future generations of engineers and scientists will be able to design solutions for local and global challenges is critical. \nUNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed the 4 March World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development during its 40th session in November 2019 (40 C/64)\, to raise awareness of the role of engineering in modern life\, which is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development\, especially in Africa and the small island developing states (SIDS). In spite of the importance of engineering for our life and future\, women have been historically underrepresented in engineering fields\, typically making up only 10 – 20% of the engineering work force.  Even in countries where the numbers of women studying STI have increased\, this trend has not translated into more women entering the workplace. Too many female students who graduate do not go into the engineering profession. The barriers are often connected to persistent gender stereotypes in this field\, inadequate policies or educational environments that do not meet their needs and aspirations. UNESCO is placing a high priority on activities that promote awareness of engineering as a career\, as well as on those that demonstrate the importance of youth studying science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The theme of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2026 is “Smart engineering for sustainable future through innovation and digitalization”. \nThe World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) Hackathon is a key celebration of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development\, bringing together engineering students and young engineers from around the world to solve real-world challenges. It is the largest international competition for engineering students globally. Participants collaborate across disciplines to design solutions that advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — harnessing engineering\, innovation\, and emergent digital technologies to drive social progress and environmental sustainability. \nLinks:\nWorld Engineering Day for Sustainable Development \nWorld Engineering Day

SUMMARY:#Pi dag #PiDay / #idm314 Dag van de Wiskunde / Day of Mathematics / Ask a Question Day / Stel een Vraag Dag / Albert Einstein – geboortedag (1879) / Stephen Hawking – sterfdag (2018) 2026
\nLinks:\nPi Day \nAsk a Question Day \nStephen William Hawking CH CBE. 8 January 1942—14 March 2018 (Royal Society) \nNew Proof Solves 80-Year-Old Irrational Number Problem \n4 bizarre Stephen Hawking theories that turned out to be right (and 6 we’re not sure about) \nFamous Einstein equation used to create matter from light for first time \nStephen Hawking and I created his final theory of the cosmos – here’s what it reveals about the origins of time and life

SUMMARY:#ForestDay #IntlForestDay Day of Forests / Dag van het Bos 2026
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/67/200 on 21 December 2012\, which declared that 21 March of each year is to be observed as the Day of Forests. \nThe Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests\, countries are encouraged to undertake local\, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees\, such as tree planting campaigns.  The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests. \n2026 Theme is ‘Celebrating forests and economies’. Forests and economies is the theme of the 2026 International Day of Forests\, celebrating the essential roles of forests in driving economic prosperity. These roles go well beyond income and jobs from forest production and the trade of renewable raw materials and foods: forests also sustain family and community agriculture\, enhance agricultural productivity\, and safeguard healthy watersheds. With many countries seeking to move toward a sustainable bioeconomy\, forest products offer nature-based solutions as replacements for carbon-intensive materials while generating new economic opportunities. Forests are indispensable for healthy economies – today and for future generations. \nLinks:\nInternational Day of Forests \nInternational Day of Forests 21 March

SUMMARY:Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims / Dag voor het Recht op de Waarheid over Grove Schendingen van de Mensenrechten en voor de Waardigheid van Slachtoffers 2026
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, on 24 March\, the Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed. \nThis annual observance pays tribute to the memory of Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero\, who was murdered on 24 March 1980. Monsignor Romero was actively engaged in denouncing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable individuals in El Salvador. Right to truth is the right\, in the case of grave violations of human rights\, for the victims and their families or societies to have access to the truth of what happened. The right to truth is closely related to\, but distinct from\, the state obligation to investigate and prosecute serious state violations of human rights. Right to truth is a form of victims’ rights; it is especially relevant to transitional justice in dealing with past abuses of human rights. In 2006\, Yasmin Naqvi concluded that the right to truth “stands somewhere on the threshold of a legal norm and a narrative device … somewhere above a good argument and somewhere below a clear legal rule” \nLinks:\nDay for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims

SUMMARY:Sixty-fourth Session of the IPCC
DESCRIPTION:The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Panel meets in plenary session about twice a year. It may meet more often for the approval of reports. \nThe Panel controls the IPCC’s structure\, procedures\, work programme\, and budget and accepts and approves IPCC reports. The Panel is the IPCC corporate entity. The IPCC is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations (UN). Its job is to “provide governments at all levels with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies“. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) set up the IPCC in 1988. The UN endorsed the creation of the IPCC later that year. It has a secretariat in Geneva\, Switzerland\, hosted by the WMO. It has 195 member states who govern the IPCC. The member states elect a bureau of scientists to serve through an assessment cycle. A cycle is usually six to seven years. The bureau selects experts in their fields to prepare IPCC reports. There is a formal nomination process by governments and observer organizations to find these experts. The IPCC has three working groups and a task force\, which carry out its scientific work. \nLinks:\nSixty-fourth Session of the IPCC (IPCC-64)\, Bangkok\, Thailand\, 24 – 27 March 2026

SUMMARY:Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing UN Staff Members / Dag van Solidariteit voor Ontvoerde en Vermiste VN-medewerkers 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members is marked each year on the anniversary of the abduction of Alec Collett\, a former journalist who was working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) when he was abducted by armed gunman in 1985; his body was finally found in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley in 2009. \nThe Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members has taken on even greater importance in recent years\, as attacks against the United Nations intensify.  This is a day to mobilize action\, demand justice and strengthen their resolve to protect UN staff and peacekeepers\, as well as their colleagues in the non-governmental community and the press. Since the founding of the United Nations in 1945\, hundreds of brave men and women have lost their lives in its service. During the 1990s\, the growing number and scale of UN peacekeeping missions put many more at risk. More lives were lost during the 1990s than in the previous four decades combined. At that time\, an awareness began to develop among Member States and staff\, that the more active the UN became in the future\, the more it was going to be targeted. The first resolution on staff security was adopted by the UN Security Council in September 1993. Complex negotiations subsequently took place in the Sixth (Legal) Committee of the General Assembly on an international legal convention to protect UN personnel. The result of those negotiations was the Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel\, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 9 December 1994. \nLinks:\nInternational Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members 25 March

SUMMARY:#RememberSlavery #FightRacism Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade / Herdenkingsdag van de Slachtoffers van Slavernij en de trans-Atlantische Slavenhandel 2026
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is a time for reflection\, but it is also a time for education. \nDespite myths to the contrary\, enslaved Africans enriched the Americas not just through their labour but also through a transfer of vital skills and knowledge. In addition\, rather than accepting their fate\, they engaged in powerful acts of resistance. The United Nations works to highlight such stories through its Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery\, which is managed by the Department of Global Communications\, and the Routes of Enslaved Peoples Project\, which is run by the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In 2006\, the United Nations General Assembly\, through resolution 61/19\, recognized that “the slave trade and slavery are among the worst violations of human rights in the history of humanity\, bearing in mind particularly their scale and duration” and designated 25 March 2007 as the International Day for the Commemoration of the Two-hundredth Anniversary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. \nThe following year\, through resolution 62/122\, it designated 25 March as an annual International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, beginning in 2008. The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was passed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 1807. From that day on\, “all manner of dealing and reading in the purchase\, sale\, barter\, or transfer of slaves or of persons intending to be sold\, transferred\, used\, or dealt with as slaves\, practiced or carried in\, at\, or from any part of the coast or countries of Africa shall be abolished\, prohibited and declared to be unlawful”. However\, while the act abolished the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans\, it did not abolish slavery\, which still continued for decades. The abolition followed powerful and sustained acts of resistance by enslaved Africans\, including the Haitian revolution\, which led to the establishment in 1804 of the Republic of Haiti – the first nation to become independent as a result of the struggle of enslaved women and men. \nLinks:\nInternational Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, 25 March \nUN resolution urges reparations for slavery’s ‘historical wrongs’

SUMMARY:Day of Zero Waste 2026
DESCRIPTION:On 14 December 2022\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution at its seventy-seventh session to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste\, to be observed annually. \nTürkiye\, with 105 other countries\, put forward the resolution\, following other high-level decisions focused on pollution\, such as the UN Environment Assembly resolution “End plastic pollution: towards an internationally legally binding instrument”. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) jointly facilitate the observance of International Day of Zero Waste. As part of this campaign\, Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system\, civil society\, the private sector\, academia\, women\, youth and other stakeholders are invited to engage in activities aimed at raising awareness of national\, subnational\, regional and local zero-waste initiatives and their contribution to achieving sustainable development. Promoting zero-waste initiatives through this international day can help advance all the goals and targets in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, including Sustainable Development Goal 11 and Sustainable Development Goal 12. These goals address all forms of waste\, including food loss and waste\, natural resource extraction and electronic waste. \n2026 Theme: Zero Waste Starts on Your Plate. For this year’s International Day of Zero Waste\, the focus is on food – what we eat\, what we waste\, and how we can move towards a more circular future. The world wastes food on a staggering scale. Every year we throw away about 1 billion tonnes of edible food\, nearly one-fifth of all food available to consumers. This impacts both people and the environment. Around 60 per cent of food waste happens at the household level. The rest comes mostly from food service and retail\, the result of inefficient food systems – including production\, distribution and consumption. Tackling this issue requires redesigning these systems\, transitioning towards a more sustainable\, circular approach grounded in efficiency\, resilience and sustainability. For this transition to succeed\, we all have a role to play. \nGovernments can: \n\nAdvance food waste prevention through climate and biodiversity plans and national policies on circularity\, waste\, food systems\, agriculture and urban development and promote measurement and monitoring.\nStrengthen public–private partnerships.\nSignal leadership and take action by joining the Food Waste Breakthrough.\n\nBusinesses can: \n\nSet measurable food waste reduction targets and integrate them into existing sustainability commitments.\nInnovate to transition to circular food systems and improve efficiency across supply chains.\nJoin the Food Waste Breakthrough to scale solutions and share progress.\n\nConsumers can: \n\nPlan\, buy\, store and prepare food mindfully to cut waste and save resources.\nSupport food recovery\, redistribution and composting initiatives.\nHelp make food waste socially unacceptable through everyday action.\n\nA zero-waste future is possible when we all work together – do your part by consuming thoughtfully\, recovering surplus food\, and working to build circular food systems. Let’s ensure our food is valued\, not wasted. \nLinks:\nDay of Zero Waste
