SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. DESCRIPTION:World Radio Day is an observance day held annually on 13 February to celebrate radio as a medium. It was proclaimed on 3 November 2011 by UNESCO’s 36th General Conference after originally being proposed by the Kingdom of Spain. \nFollowing a request from the Spanish Radio Academy on 20 September 2010\, Spain proposed that the UNESCO Executive Board include an agenda item on the proclamation of a World Radio Day. UNESCO’s Executive Board approved the agenda item in its provisional agenda for the proclamation of a “World Radio Day” on 29 September 2011. UNESCO carried out a wide consultation in 2011 with diverse stakeholders\, such as broadcasting associations\, UN agencies\, funds and programmes\, relevant NGOs\, foundations and bilateral development agencies\, as well as UNESCO Permanent Delegations and National Commissions for UNESCO. Among the answers\, 91% were in favour of the project\, including official support from the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU)\, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU)\, the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB)\, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU)\, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)\, the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB)\, the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA)\, the Organización de Telecomunicaciones Ibeoramericanas (OTI)\, BBC\, URTI\, Vatican Radio\, etc. The results of this consultation are available in UNESCO’s document 187 EX/13. The Board recommended to the UNESCO 36th session of the General Conference that it proclaim a World Radio Day at its 36th session\, and that this day be celebrated by UNESCO on 13 February\, the anniversary of the day that the United Nations established the United Nations Radio in 1946. \nIt also invited all United Nations Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations\, professional associations and broadcasting unions\, as well as civil society\, including non-governmental organizations and individuals\, to duly celebrate World Radio Day\, in the way that each considers most adequate. The board further requested that UNESCO’s Director-General bring the resolution to the attention of the Secretary-General of the United Nations\, so that World Radio Day could be endorsed by the General Assembly and celebrated by the whole system. The matter was subsequently treated by UNESCO’s General Conference\, which adopted resolution contained in the file 36 C/63. World Radio Day was thus unanimously proclaimed by all Member States of UNESCO in November 2011. In December 2012\, The General Assembly of the UN endorsed the proclamation of World Radio Day\, thereby becoming a day to be celebrated by all UN agencies\, funds and programmes and their partners. File A/RES/67/124. Various radio industry bodies around the world are supporting the initiative by encouraging stations in developed countries to assist those in the developing world. At UNESCO\, the consultation\, proclamation and celebrations were handled by Mirta Lourenco\, Chief of the Sector for Media Development. \nOn World Radio Day 2026\, UNESCO gives radio stations the resources to build confidence in how Artifical Intelligence (AI) is used\, all while preserving the warmth and reliability that audiences cherish. DESCRIPTION:The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan (“the Mission”) assesses that the mass killings and related atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces in and around El-Fasher\, during its takeover of the city on or around 26 and 27 October 2025\, are indicators of a genocidal path. \nThese crimes followed an 18-month siege during which the Rapid Support Forces deliberately imposed conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of non-Arab communities\, in particular the Zaghawa and the Fur. The Mission documented an escalating pattern that demonstrates coordination\, targeting and repetition of identity-based targeting linked to ethnicity\, gender\, and perceived political affiliation\, resulting in mass killings\, serious bodily and mental harm\, widespread rape and other forms of sexual violence\, arbitrary detention\, torture and cruel treatment\, and enforced disappearances\, accompanied by dehumanising and exterminatory rhetoric. This cumulative factual matrix reveals the intent of the Rapid Support Forces to destroy the Zaghawa and Fur communities in whole or in part. The conduct in El-Fasher is an aggravation of earlier patterns of mirror attacks against other non-Arab communities elsewhere in Sudan\, but on a far more lethal scale. Accountability of perpetrators\, including those who facilitate\, aid or abet these crimes\, remains imperative. DESCRIPTION:World Day of Social Justice (Social Justice Equality Day) is an international day recognizing the need to promote social justice\, which includes efforts to tackle issues such as poverty\, exclusion\, gender inequality\, unemployment\, human rights\, and social protections. \nMany organizations\, including the UN\, American Library Association (ALA)\, and the International Labour Organization (ILO)\, make statements on the importance of social and present plans for greater social justice by tackling poverty\, social and economic exclusion and unemployment. The United Nations General Assembly has decided to observe 20 February annually\, approved on 26 November 2007 and starting in 2009\, as the World Day of Social Justice. The Declaration focuses on guaranteeing fair outcomes for all through employment\, social protection\, social dialogue\, and fundamental principles and rights. Ideal topics for teaching students about the need for social justice include (but are not limited to) childhood poverty\, global citizenship\, human rights\, and sustainable development. A series of lessons are available by country with the United Nations and other programs. Oxfam’s food for thought power point which shows students the global food system that then has the opportunity for students to share their thoughts and experiences. The lesson plans and collections available are for students of all ages. \nThe ILO unanimously adopted the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization on 10 June 2008. This is the third major statement of principles and policies adopted by the International Labour Conference since the ILO’s Constitution of 1919. It builds on the Philadelphia Declaration of 1944 and the Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work of 1998. The 2008 Declaration expresses the contemporary vision of the ILO’s mandate in the era of globalization. This landmark Declaration is a powerful reaffirmation of ILO values. It is the outcome of tripartite consultations that started in the wake of the Report of the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization. By adopting this text\, the representatives of governments\, employers’ and workers’ organizations from 182 member States emphasize the key role of our tripartite Organization in helping to achieve progress and social justice in the context of globalization. Together\, they commit to enhance the ILO’s capacity to advance these goals\, through the Decent Work Agenda. DESCRIPTION:Mother Language Day is observed every year to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. \nLanguages\, with their complex implications for identity\, communication\, social integration\, education and development\, are of strategic importance for people and planet. Yet\, due to globalization processes\, they are increasingly under threat\, or disappearing altogether. When languages fade\, so does the world’s rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Opportunities\, traditions\, memory\, unique modes of thinking and expression — valuable resources for ensuring a better future — are also lost. Every two weeks a language disappears taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage. At least 45% of the estimated 7000 languages spoken in the world are endangered. Only a few hundred languages have genuinely been given a place in education systems and the public domain\, and less than a hundred are used in the digital world. Multilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages\, which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way. Multilingual and multicultural societies thrive through the preservation of their languages\, which serve as conduits for traditional knowledge and cultural heritage. However\, linguistic diversity faces increasing threats as more languages vanish. The 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day celebrates a quarter-century of efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote mother tongues. This milestone emphasizes the importance of language preservation in safeguarding cultural heritage\, improving education\, and fostering more peaceful societies. \nCurrently\, 40% of the global population lacks access to education in their native language\, a figure that exceeds 90% in certain regions. Research underscores the benefits of using learners’ native languages in education\, fostering better learning outcomes\, self-esteem\, and critical thinking skills. This approach also supports intergenerational learning and cultural preservation. International Mother Language Day\, first proclaimed by UNESCO and later adopted by the UN General Assembly\, underscores the role of languages in promoting inclusion and achieving Sustainable Development Goals. 2025 theme: Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day. Languages are essential to education and sustainable development\, serving as the primary means through which knowledge is transferred and cultures are preserved. With approximately 8\,324 languages in the world today\, many are at risk of disappearing due to globalization and societal changes. Ensuring that education systems support the right to learn in one’s mother tongue is crucial for improving learning outcomes\, as students who are taught in a language they fully understand show better comprehension\, engagement\, and critical thinking skills. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a United Nations body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world\, the Council has 47 members elected for staggered three-year terms on a regional group basis. \nThe headquarters of the Council are at the United Nations Office at Geneva in Switzerland. The Council investigates allegations of breaches of human rights in United Nations member states and addresses thematic human rights issues like freedom of association and assembly\, freedom of expression\, freedom of belief and religion\, women’s rights\, LGBT rights\, and the rights of racial and ethnic minorities. The Council was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 15 March 2006 to replace the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR\, herein CHR). The Council works closely with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and engages the United Nations special procedures. The Council has been strongly criticized for including member countries that engage in human rights abuses. The UNHRC holds regular sessions three times a year\, in March\, June\, and September.
