SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). SUMMARY:Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. It will also leverage the interdisciplinary network of over 1100 UNESCO University Chairs\, including 35 UNESCO Chairs in Futures Studies across the world as antennas who are identifying and exploring issues that are emerging and on the horizon in their diverse fields of expertise. World Futures Day will also be the occasion to announce UNESCO’s Global Anticipatory Policy Coalition\, led by UNESCO’s MOST Programme.  Serving as a global platform\, the Coalition will foster knowledge exchange and peer learning by convening government officials and foresight experts experienced in applying foresight to share lessons and best practices to promote foresight and anticipation capabilities across Member States and advance forward-looking\, equity-driven policy solutions for social transformation. DESCRIPTION:In September 2015\, the United Nations General Assembly established 9 December as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. \nThe 9th of December is the anniversary of the adoption of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the “Genocide Convention”). The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the Genocide Convention and its role in combating and preventing the crime of genocide\, as defined in the Convention\, and to commemorate and honour its victims. In adopting the resolution\, without a vote\, the 193-member Assembly reiterated the responsibility of each individual State to protect its populations from genocide\, which entails the prevention of such a crime\, including incitement to it. \nThe 2024 high-level Event will be held in person at the United Nations Headquarters in New York at the Trusteeship Council Chamber on 9 December 2024\, 17:00 – 19:00 CEST. It will also be live webcasted on UNTV. It will include opening remarks\, followed by a panel discussion and statements from regional groups of Member States. SUMMARY:Day of Neutrality 2025
DESCRIPTION:Neutrality — defined as the legal status arising from the abstention of a state from all participation in a war between other states\, the maintenance of an attitude of impartiality toward the belligerents\, and the recognition by the belligerents of this abstention and impartiality — is critically important for the United Nations to gain and maintain the confidence and cooperation of all in order to operate independently and effectively\, especially in situations that are politically charged. \nAs Article 2 of the UN Charter obligates member states to settle their international disputes by peaceful means and to refrain from the threat\, or the use of force in their relations\, the General Assembly reaffirmed those obligations in its resolution 71/275. The resolution also underlined that some states’ national policies of neutrality can contribute to the strengthening of international peace and security and play an important role in developing mutually beneficial relations among countries of the world. Recognizing that such national policies of neutrality are aimed at promoting the use of preventive diplomacy\, which is a core function of the United Nations and occupies a central place among the functions of the Secretary-General\, the General Assembly decided to declare 12 December the International Day of Neutrality\, and called for marking the day by holding events aimed at enhancing public awareness of the value of neutrality in international relations. In the face of political tension and escalating crises\, it is of great importance to uphold the principles of sovereignty and the sovereign equality of States\, territorial integrity\, self-determination and non-intervention in the internal affairs of any State\, and to defend\, promote and encourage the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security are not endangered. \nTherefore\, the policy of neutrality contributes to the strengthening of peace and security in relevant regions and at the global level and plays an important role in developing peaceful\, friendly and mutually beneficial relations between the countries of the world. It is worth noting that the policy of neutrality — a key factor for providing conditions and building a platform for peaceful negotiations — is also closely interconnected with and based on the tools of preventive diplomacy\, such as early warning and prevention of conflict\, mediation\, good offices\, fact-finding missions\, negotiation\, the use of special envoys\, informal consultations\, peacebuilding and targeted development activities. Hence\, preventive diplomacy is a core function of the United Nations and is central to the role of the United Nations Secretary-General\, including the special political missions of the United Nations and the good offices of the Secretary-General in peacemaking\, peacekeeping and peacebuilding. \nConsequently\, and in accordance with the guiding principles for the strengthening of the coordination of emergency humanitarian assistance of the United Nations system\, countries with the status of neutrality play an important role in providing and delivering humanitarian assistance in situations of complex emergencies and natural disasters. On 2 February 2017\, the UN General Assembly adopted without a vote resolution 71/275 — introduced by Turkmenistan\, recognized by the UN as a permanently neutral state since 12 December 1995 — which noted the link between the preservation of peace and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, and declared 12 December as the International Day of Neutrality. The aforementioned GA resolution also proposes that UN Secretary-General continue to cooperate closely with the neutral states\, with a view to implementing the principles of preventive diplomacy and utilizing them in the mediation activities. \nLinks:\nDay of Neutrality

DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, with the adoption of resolution A/RES/80/106\, the United Nations established 14 December as the International Day Against Colonialism in All Its Forms and Manifestations. \nThis observance reaffirms the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (Resolution 1514 (XV))\, emphasizing the necessity of bringing to a speedy and unconditional end colonialism in all its forms and manifestations. This International Day supports the UN’s determination to implement the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples and related decisions\, and to promote decolonization as one of its main mandates. As part of the inaugural celebration of the Day\, the United Nations is hosting on 18 December\, a one-day high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly to commemorate the sixty-fifth anniversary of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples\, with the participation of Member States and observers\, as well as of the President of the General Assembly\, the President of the Economic and Social Council and the Secretary-General. DESCRIPTION:The UN General Assembly\, convinced that the promotion of the culture of solidarity and the spirit of sharing is important for combating poverty\, proclaimed 20 of December as International Human Solidarity Day. \nThe Sustainable Development Agenda is centred on people & planet\, underpinned by human rights and supported by a global partnership determined to lift people out of poverty\, hunger and disease. It will\, thus\, be built on a foundation of global cooperation and solidarity. World Human Solidarity Day is: \n\na day to celebrate our unity in diversity;\na day to remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements;\na day to raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity;\na day to encourage debate on the ways to promote solidarity for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals including poverty eradication;\na day of action to encourage new initiatives for poverty eradication.\n\nSolidarity is identified in the Millennium Declaration as one of the fundamental values of international relations in the 21st Century\, wherein those\, who either suffer or benefit least deserve help from those who benefit most. Consequently\, in the context of globalization and the challenge of growing inequality\, strengthening of international solidarity is indispensable. Therefore\, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 20 of December as International Human Solidarity Day. Through initiatives such as the establishment of the World Solidarity Fund to eradicate poverty and the proclamation of International Human Solidarity Day\, the concept of solidarity was promoted as crucial in the fight against poverty and in the involvement of all relevant stakeholders. The concept of solidarity has defined the work of the United Nations since the birth of the Organization. The creation of the United Nations drew the peoples and nations of the world together to promote peace\, human rights and social and economic development. The Organization was founded on the basic premise of unity and harmony among its members\, expressed in the concept of collective security that relies on the solidarity of its members to unite “to maintain international peace and security.” It is in the spirit of solidarity that the Organization relies on “cooperation in solving international problems of an economic\, social\, cultural or humanitarian character” as well. The General Assembly\, on 22 December 2005\, by resolution 60/209 identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values that should underlie relations between peoples in the twenty-first century\, and in that regard decided to proclaim 20 December of each year International Human Solidarity Day. By resolution 57/265 the General Assembly\, on 20 December 2002\, established the World Solidarity Fund\, which was set up in February 2003 as a trust fund of the United Nations Development Programme. DESCRIPTION:More than two-thirds of the world’s population accessed the Internet in 2023\, connectivity has changed lives and brought countless benefits\, but the digital world also brings significant risks. \nCybercriminals exploit online systems through malware\, ransomware and hacking to steal money\, data\, and other valuable information\, and they use information and communication technology to facilitate other crimes\, recruit victims\, perpetrate scams and launder money. The threat is only growing.  Transnational organized criminal groups have set up scam farms\, running billion-dollar criminal enterprises and defrauding victims from around the world through online romance schemes\, investment fraud and other scams. At the same time\, these criminal groups are luring people through online platforms and trafficking them to work in the scam centres. Prevention is the best defence against online threats\, and the international community needs urgently to raise greater awareness of the dangers of online fraud\, recruitment and trafficking. International cooperation must also be strengthened as cybercrime and online scams are cross-border threats\, exploiting scam victims in the most developed countries and trafficking victims in the most impoverished\, and Member States must work together in order to effectively prevent and address such crimes\, and protect people. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) leads the UN response to cybercrime with training and support to countries across the world. Drawing upon the Office’s specialized expertise on fighting transnational organized crime and corruption and supporting criminal justice systems\, UNODC provides technical assistance to strengthen prevention\, reform legislative reform\, build and upskill law enforcement capabilities and improve international cooperation. \nLinks:\nDay against Cybercrime

DESCRIPTION:As exemplified by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic major infectious diseases and epidemics have devastating impacts on human lives\, wreaking havoc on long-term social and economic development. \nGlobal health crises threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems\, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people\, including women and children\, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries. There is an urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems\, reaching those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations. In the event of the absence of international attention\, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and gravity. There is great need of raising awareness\, the exchange of information\, scientific knowledge and best practices\, quality education\, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at the local\, national\, regional and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics. It is important to strengthen epidemic prevention by applying lessons learned on epidemic management and how to prevent the stoppage of basic services\, and to raise the level of preparedness in order to have the earliest and most adequate response to any epidemic that may arise\, and recognizing also the value of an integrated One Health approach that fosters integration of human health\, animal health and plant health\, as well as environmental and other relevant sectors. International cooperation and multilateralism play an important role in the response to epidemics. \nWe need to stress the significance of partnership and solidarity among every individual\, community and State\, and regional and international organizations\, in all stages of epidemic management\, as well as the importance of considering a gender perspective in this regard. The United Nations system\, in particular the World Health Organization\, plays a pivotal role in coordinating responses to epidemics\, in accordance with its mandate\, and in supporting national\, regional and international efforts to prevent\, mitigate and address the impacts of infectious diseases and epidemics in accordance with the goal of advancing the 2030 Agenda. We need to recognize the primary role and responsibility of Governments and the indispensable contribution of relevant stakeholders in tackling global health challenges\, especially women\, who make up the majority of the world’s health workers. UN member states commit to ensure inclusive\, equal and non-discriminatory participation\, with special attention to those\, who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations with the highest chance of epidemic infection. The UN General Assembly invites all Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other global\, regional and subregional organizations\, the private sector and civil society\, including non-governmental organizations\, academic institutions\, individuals and other relevant stakeholders to observe the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness annually in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national contexts and priorities\, through education and awareness-raising activities\, in order to highlight the importance of the prevention of\, preparedness for and partnership against epidemics. \nLinks:\nDay of Epidemic Preparedness
