SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. DESCRIPTION:United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) ‘Emissions Gap Report 2025: Off Target‘ finds that available new climate pledges under the Paris Agreement have only slightly lowered global temperature rise over the course of this century\, leaving the world heading for a serious escalation of climate risks and damages. \n\nThe sixteenth edition of the Emissions Gap Report finds that global warming projections over this century\, based on full implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)\, are now 2.3-2.5°C\, while those based on current policies are 2.8°C. This compares to 2.6-2.8°C and 3.1°C in last year’s report. However\, methodological updates account for 0.1°C of the improvement\, and the upcoming withdrawal of the US from the Paris Agreement will cancel another 0.1°C\, meaning that the new NDCs themselves have barely moved the needle. Nations remain far from meeting the Paris Agreement goal to limit warming to well-below 2°C\, while pursuing efforts to stay below 1.5°C. Reductions to annual emissions of 35 per cent and 55 per cent\, compared with 2019 levels\, are needed in 2035 to align with the Paris Agreement 2°C and 1.5°C pathways\, respectively. Given the size of the cuts needed\, the short time available to deliver them and a challenging political climate\, a higher exceedance of 1.5°C will happen\, very likely within the next decade. The report finds that this overshoot must be limited through faster and bigger reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to minimize climate risks and damages and keep returning to 1.5°C by 2100 within the realms of possibility – although doing so will be extremely challenging. Every fraction of a degree avoided means lower losses for people and ecosystems\, lower costs\, and less reliance on uncertain carbon dioxide removal techniques to return to 1.5°C by 2100. Since the adoption of the Paris Agreement ten years ago\, temperature predictions have fallen from 3-3.5°C. The required low-carbon technologies to deliver big emission cuts are available. Wind and solar energy development is booming\, lowering deployment costs. This means the international community can accelerate climate action\, should they choose to do so. DESCRIPTION:On 5 November 2001\, the UN General Assembly declared 6 November of each year as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict (A/RES/56/4). \nThough humanity has always counted its war casualties in terms of dead and wounded soldiers and civilians\, destroyed cities and livelihoods\, the environment has often remained the unpublicized victim of war. Water wells have been polluted\, crops torched\, forests cut down\, soils poisoned\, and animals killed to gain military advantage. Furthermore\, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has found that over the last 60 years\, at least 40 percent of all internal conflicts have been linked to the exploitation of natural resources\, whether high-value resources such as timber\, diamonds\, gold and oil\, or scarce resources such as fertile land and water. Conflicts involving natural resources have also been found to be twice as likely to relapse. The United Nations attaches great importance to ensuring that action on the environment is part of conflict prevention\, peacekeeping and peacebuilding strategies\, because there can be no durable peace if the natural resources that sustain livelihoods and ecosystems are destroyed. On 27 May 2016\, the United Nations Environment Assembly adopted resolution UNEP/EA.2/Res.15\, which recognized the role of healthy ecosystems and sustainably managed resources in reducing the risk of armed conflict\, and reaffirmed its strong commitment to the full implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals listed in General Assembly resolution 70/1\, entitled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. \nLinks:\nDay for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict

The organization of events and activities for the week was undertaken as a non-governmental initiative; the secretariat for the International Year of Peace was informed of the preparatory activities and the final summary of events that occurred during the week. The organizers sought to encourage the broadest possible international participation in the observance. Based on the success of the 1986 observance\, the organizers continued their efforts in successive years. In recognition of the value of the annual observance\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43/61 in December 1988\, which proclaims the “International Week of Science and Peace”\, to take place each year during the week in which 11 November falls. UNESCO strongly encourages all to join in celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development by organizing your own event or activity on the day. The organization of a focused event related to the commitment to science and society was one of the positive outcomes of the 1999 World Conference on Science in Budapest. It was considered an opportunity to reaffirm each year the commitment to attaining the goals proclaimed in the Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge and to follow up the recommendations of the Science Agenda: Framework for Action. Since its proclamation by UNESCO in 2001\, World Science Day for Peace and Development has generated many concrete projects\, programmes\, and funding for science around the world. The Day has also helped foster cooperation between scientists living in regions marred by conflict—one example being the UNESCO-supported creation of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO). The rationale of celebrating a World Science Day for Peace and Development has its roots in the importance of the role of science and scientists for sustainable societies and in the need to inform and involve citizens in science. In this sense\, a World Science Day for Peace and Development offers an opportunity to show the general public the relevance of science in their lives and to engage them in discussions. DESCRIPTION:In March 2024\, the General Assembly declared 15 November the International Day for the Prevention of and Fight against All Forms of Transnational Organized Crime\, in order to raise awareness of the threats posed by all forms of transnational organized crime and to enhance international cooperation in this regard. \nIt recognized the importance of the prevention of and fight against transnational organized crime for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The General Assembly commemorated all victims of organized crime\, including those who have lost their lives fighting such crime\, in particular law enforcement and judicial personnel\, and paying special tribute to all those persons\, such as Judge Giovanni Falcone\, whose work and sacrifice paved the way for the adoption of the Convention\, and affirming that their legacy lives on through our global commitment to preventing and combating organized crime. Organized crime thrives worldwide\, affecting governance and political processes\, and weakening the advancement of the rule of law. It encompasses\, inter alia\, illicit trafficking of firearms\, drugs\, protected species\, cultural property\, or falsified medical products and\, among its most severe manifestations\, human trafficking and the smuggling of migrants. It also includes the laundering of proceeds of crime and obstruction of justice. Moreover\, with all forms of organized crime shifting ever more to being dependent on or incorporating online aspects\, including the use of virtual assets\, its reach and capability of harm is increasing. Organized criminal groups are flexible in changing or expanding their illicit businesses for profit. They misuse vulnerabilities and crisis situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic\, economic downturns\, natural disasters\, and armed conflicts exploiting them for their own purposes. Traditional\, territorial-based criminal groups have evolved or have been partially replaced by smaller and more flexible networks with branches across several jurisdictions. Criminal actors\, witnesses\, victims and proceeds of crime may be located in many different States. It is therefore evident\, that joint efforts from States across the world are required as organized crime cannot be tackled in isolation. \nThe 2025 campaign\, “Follow the money. Stop organized crime.”\, highlights the cost of transnational organized crime and underscores the importance of tracing illicit financial flows to cut the lifeline of criminal networks. By targeting the profits of organized crime\, we can disrupt operations\, strengthen justice and return stolen assets to communities. Everyone\, including Member States\, international organizations\, civil society\, the private sector and individuals\, is encouraged to take part in this year’s campaign. Transnational organized crime is a growing global threat that harms and exploits people\, communities\, economies and the planet. DESCRIPTION:The 11th Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) 183 Parties\, representing more than 90% of the world’s population\, work together to enhance and advance tobacco control. \nThe Conference of the Parties (COP) is the governing body of the WHO FCTC and is comprised of all Parties to the Convention. The work of the COP is governed by its Rules of Procedure and keeps under regular review the implementation of the Convention and takes the decisions necessary to promote its effective implementation\, and may also adopt protocols\, annexes and amendments to the Convention. The COP may establish such subsidiary bodies as are necessary to achieve the objective of the Convention\, such as the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body on a Protocol on Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. The COP also may establish working groups or expert groups with the mandate to elaborate guidelines and recommendations for the implementation of different treaty provisions. The Meeting of the Parties (MOP) is the governing body of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. The work of the MOP is governed by its Rules of Procedure and keeps under regular review the implementation of the Protocol and takes the decisions necessary to promote its effective implementation. The MOP may establish working groups or expert groups with the mandate to elaborate guidelines and recommendations for the implementation of different protocol provisions. To this end\, the first session of the MOP established a working group on the tracking and tracing system following article 8\, and a second one on assistance and cooperation following articles 12\, 21\, 23\, 24\, 28 and 29. The working groups presented their reports to the second session of the MOP in November 2020. De Verenigde Naties heeft UNICEF aangesteld als een soort toezichthouder op de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van het Kind\, zij mogen landen er op aanspreken als ze een loopje nemen met kinderrechten. Dit verdrag is intussen door 196 landen geratificeerd (bekrachtigen van een internationaal verdrag). Dit zijn alle lidstaten van de Verenigde Naties\, op de Verenigde Staten na. De VS heeft het verdrag wel getekend maar nog steeds niet geratificeerd. DESCRIPTION:World Television Day is not so much a celebration of the tool\, but rather the philosophy which it represents\, television represents a symbol for communication and globalization in the contemporary world. \nTelevision continues to be the single largest source of video consumption. Though screen sizes have changed\, and people create\, post\, stream and consume content on different platforms\, the number of households with television sets around the world continues to rise. The interaction between emerging and traditional forms of broadcast creates a great opportunity to raise awareness about the important issues facing our communities and our planet. In recognition of the increasing impact television has on decision-making by bringing world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security and its potential role in sharpening the focus on other major issues\, including economic and social issues\, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 November as World Television Day (through resolution 51/205 of 17 December 1996). On 21 and 22 November 1996 the United Nations held the first World Television Forum\, where leading media figures met under the auspices of the United Nations to discuss the growing significance of television in today’s changing world and to consider how they might enhance their mutual cooperation. That is why the General Assembly decided to proclaim 21 November as World Television Day. This was done in recognition of the increasing impact television has on the process of decision-making. Television was thus acknowledged as a major tool in informing\, channelling and affecting public opinion. DESCRIPTION:Recognizing that the case of conjoined twins is a rare condition where the estimated incidence can be 1 in 50\,000 births\, the General Assembly decided to proclaim 24 November as World Conjoined Twins Day. \nThe Assembly emphasized the need to address the condition of conjoined twins\, by raising awareness of their cases at all levels and through a life-course approach\, in cooperation with relevant United Nations agencies and other stakeholders\, as well as by advocating for their well-being and social inclusion\, while taking into account relevant agreed international standards\, norms and principles. Conjoined fetuses are a rare type of identical twins that share a placenta and an amniotic sac\, when the embryo divides at 13-15 days from conception. The incidence ranges from 1/50\,000-1/100\,000 live births. Female fetuses are more commonly affected\, as the ratio of female to male is 3:1. No association with maternal age\, race\, parity\, or heredity has been observed\, and the recurrence risk is negligible. Reaffirming the right of every human being\, without distinction of any kind\, to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health\, the United Nations is committed to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages\, including by strengthening health systems and achieving universal health coverage and all other health-related targets and leaving no one behind. There is the need to scale up efforts to build and strengthen quality\, people-centred\, sustainable and resilient health systems\, and to promote strong global partnerships with all relevant stakeholders to collaboratively support the efforts of Member States\, as appropriate\, to achieve universal health coverage and other health-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. In this sense\, the United Nations strives to strengthen regional and international cooperation\, multilateralism\, global solidarity\, coordination and health governance\, towards the progressive realization of the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for all\, without distinction of any kind. \nLinks:\nWorld Conjoined Twins Day

DESCRIPTION:Violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. \nGlobally\, almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence\, non-partner sexual violence\, or both\, at least once in their life. On 25 November 1960\, the Mirabal sisters were tragically assassinated for their fight against injustice under Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.
