SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. DESCRIPTION:The Day to Protect Education from Attack was established by a unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly\, calling on UNESCO and UNICEF to raise awareness of the plight of millions of children living in countries affected by conflict. \nThe resolution A/RES/74/275 proclaiming the Day was presented by the State of Qatar and co-sponsored by 62 countries. The General Assembly resolution affirms that governments have the primary responsibility to provide protection and ensure inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels to all learners\, especially those in vulnerable situations. It further emphasizes the need to intensify efforts and increase funding to promote safe and protective school environments in humanitarian emergencies by taking all feasible measures to protect schools\, learners and educational personnel from attack\, refrain from actions that impede children’s access to education\, and facilitate access to education in situations of armed conflict. UNESCO and UNICEF will facilitate the annual observance of the Day in close collaboration with partners within and outside the UN system. Involving two or more developing countries\, it can take place on a bilateral\, regional\, intraregional or interregional basis. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP or DOTROIP) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday\, September 13\, 2007\, by a majority of 144 states in favour\, 4 votes against\, and 11 abstentions. \nThe groundwork toward this declaration began in 1923 and 1925 with the works of Haudenosaunee Chief Deskaheh and Māori T.W. Ratana\, who attempted to bring issues of Canada and New Zealand’s failure to uphold treaties to the League of Nations\, United Nations’ precursor. In May 2016\, Canada officially removed its objector status to UNDRIP\, almost a decade after it was adopted by the General Assembly. By now the other three objectors have\, to varying degrees\, also turned their votes. As a General Assembly Declaration\, UNDRIP is not a legally binding instrument under international law. According to a UN press release it does “represent the dynamic development of international legal norms and it reflects the commitment of the UN’s member states to move in certain directions”; the UN describes it as setting “an important standard for the treatment of indigenous peoples that will undoubtedly be a significant tool toward eliminating human rights violations against the planet’s 370 million indigenous people\, and assisting them in combating discrimination and marginalisation.” UNDRIP codifies “Indigenous historical grievances\, contemporary challenges and socio-economic\, political and cultural aspirations” and is the “culmination of generations-long efforts by Indigenous organizations to get international attention\, to secure recognition for their aspirations\, and to generate support for their political agendas.” Canada Research Chair and faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan Ken Coates argues that UNDRIP resonates powerfully with Indigenous peoples\, while national governments have not yet fully understood its impact. \nLinks:\nUnited Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

These values are embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and further developed in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights\, which enshrines a host of political rights and civil liberties underpinning meaningful democracies. SUMMARY:Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons 2025
DESCRIPTION:The General Assembly commemorates 26 September as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons\, this Day provides an occasion for the world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament as a priority. \nIt provides an opportunity to educate the public – and their leaders – about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons\, and the social and economic costs of perpetuating them. Achieving global nuclear disarmament is one of the oldest goals of the United Nations. It was the subject of the General Assembly’s first resolution in 1946\, which established the Atomic Energy Commission\, which was dissolved in 1952\, with a mandate to make specific proposals for the control of nuclear energy and the elimination of atomic weapons and all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction. The United Nations has been at the forefront of many major diplomatic efforts to advance nuclear disarmament since. In 1959\, the General Assembly endorsed the objective of general and complete disarmament. In 1978\, the first Special Session of the General Assembly Devoted to Disarmament further recognized that nuclear disarmament should be the priority objective in the field of disarmament. Every United Nations Secretary-General has actively promoted this goal. \nThe General Assembly declared the International Day in December 2013\, in its resolution 68/32 as a follow-up to the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on nuclear disarmament held on 26 September 2013\, in New York. This was the latest in a series of efforts by the General Assembly to raise public awareness and to seek deeper engagement on nuclear disarmament matters. In 2009\, the General Assembly had declared 29 August as the International Day against Nuclear Tests (resolution 64/35). In resolution 68/32\, the General Assembly called for the “urgent commencement of negotiations in the Conference on Disarmament of a comprehensive convention on nuclear weapons to prohibit their possession\, development\, production\, acquisition\, testing\, stockpiling\, transfer and use or threat of use\, and to provide for their destruction.” \nIn 2014\, in its resolution 69/58\, the General Assembly further expressed its desire to commemorate the Day\, and requested the Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly to make all arrangements necessary to commemorate the International Day and promote it\, including by convening an annual meeting of the Assembly to provide a platform for the promotion of these activities. The General Assembly repeated these requests and call in subsequent years in resolutions  70/34\, 71/71\, 72/251\, 73/40\, 74/54\, 75/45\, 76/36\, 77/47 and 78/27. The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons has been observed annually since 2014. Pursuant to the resolutions of the General Assembly\, Member States\, the United Nations system and civil society\, including non-governmental organizations\, academia\, parliamentarians\, the mass media and individuals are encouraged to commemorate and promote the International Day through enhancing public awareness and education about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination. To observe the International Day\, the United Nations is supporting events both in New York and Geneva. United Nations Information Centres around the world are encouraged to raise awareness to the observance of International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. \nYet\, today nearly around 12\,100 nuclear weapons remain. Countries possessing such weapons have well-funded\, long-term plans to modernize their nuclear arsenals. More than half of the world’s population still lives in countries that either have such weapons or are members of nuclear alliances. While the number of deployed nuclear weapons has appreciably declined since the height of the Cold War\, not one nuclear weapon has been physically destroyed pursuant to a treaty. In addition\, no nuclear disarmament negotiations are currently underway. Meanwhile\, the doctrine of nuclear deterrence persists as an element in the security policies of all possessor states and many of their allies. The international arms-control framework that contributed to international security since the Cold War\, acted as a brake on the use of nuclear weapons and advanced nuclear disarmament\, has come under increasing strain. Most recently\, on 2 August 2019\, the United States’ withdrawal spelled the end of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty\, through with the United States and the Russian Federation had previously committed to eliminating an entire class of nuclear missiles. \nFrustration has been growing amongst Member States regarding what is perceived as the slow pace of nuclear disarmament. This frustration has been put into sharper focus with growing concerns about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of even a single nuclear weapon\, let alone a regional or global nuclear war. Commemorating this Day at the United Nations is especially important\, given its universal membership and its long experience in grappling with nuclear disarmament issues. DESCRIPTION:The World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27\, 2023. September 27 was chosen as on that day in 1970\, the Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) were adopted. \nTourism is one of the world’s most important economic sectors. It employs one in every ten people on Earth and provides livelihoods to hundreds of millions more. For some countries\, it can represent over 20 percent of their GDP. It allows people to experience some of the world’s cultural and natural riches and brings people closer to each other\, highlighting our common humanity. Tourism is an essential pillar of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals\, especially goals 8\, 12\, and 14. It serves as a first entry point to the world of work\, especially for women\, youth\, migrant workers\, and rural populations in developing and least developed countries (LDCs). Women represent a majority of the tourism sector workforce\, while half of that workforce is under 25 years of age. Moreover\, in many parts of the world\, the protection of biodiversity and conservation rely heavily on the tourism sector and the revenue it generates. \nThe constant growth of the tourism sector during the last six decades reflects more progressive access to tourism thanks to the decline in the cost of transport and the world-wide growth of the middle classes. The recognition of the right to holidays in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, and the improved adoption of labor rights in many countries have also supported its development. These factors also serve as a backdrop for the resilience shown by tourism in recent years. The sector has experienced almost uninterrupted growth despite challenges such as the global economic crisis and natural disasters. \nThe many important contributions of tourism encouraged the UNWTO to institute World Tourism Day in a meeting that took place in Spain\, commencing the first celebration of the observance in the year 1980. This date was chosen to coincide with an important milestone in world tourism: the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970. DESCRIPTION:Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is a United Nations-sanctioned designated awareness day observed annually on 29 September with the goal to raise awareness of the importance of food loss and waste\, this day is co-convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)\, whereas\, the day’s events are jointly led by these two organizations. \nThe main aim of the day is to raise awareness to the importance of food loss and waste related problems and their possible solutions at all levels\, and also to promote global efforts and collective action towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3\, which targets to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030\, and reduce food losses along the food production and supply chains. It has been calculated that an average of 74 kg of food per person is wasted each year worldwide. According to some estimates\, 1.4 billion hectares of agricultural land are used annually to produce food that will eventually be discarded; 14% of produced food (worth approximately 400 billion dollars) is lost between harvest and sale\, while 17% of global agrifood production is wasted. DESCRIPTION:Translation Day is meant as an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals\, which plays an important role in bringing nations together\, facilitating dialogue\, understanding and cooperation\, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security. \nTransposition of a literary or scientific work\, including technical work\, from one language into another language\, professional translation\, including translation proper\, interpretation and terminology\, is indispensable to preserving clarity\, a positive climate and productiveness in international public discourse and interpersonal communication. Thus\, on 24 May 2017\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 71/288 on the role of language professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace\, understanding and development\, and declared 30 September as International Translation Day. Languages\, with their complex implications for identity\, communication\, social integration\, education and development\, are of strategic importance for people and the planet. There is growing awareness that languages play a vital role in development\, in ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue\, but also in attaining quality education for all and strengthening cooperation\, in building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage\, and in mobilizing political will for applying the benefits of science and technology to sustainable development. An essential factor in harmonious communication among peoples\, multilingualism is also regarded by the United Nations General Assembly as a core value of the Organization.
