DESCRIPTION:Action in memory of Alexei Navalny at the monument to victims of political repression in St. Petersburg on 16 February 2024\nOpposition to the government of President Vladimir Putin in Russia\, commonly referred to as the Russian opposition\, can be divided between the parliamentary opposition parties in the State Duma and the various non-systemic opposition organizations. \nWhile the former are largely viewed as being more or less loyal to the government and Putin\, the latter oppose the government and are mostly unrepresented in government bodies. According to Russian NGO Levada Center\, about 15% of the Russian population disapproved of Putin in the beginning of 2023. The “systemic opposition” is mainly composed of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF)\, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR)\, A Just Russia – For Truth (SRZP)\, New People and other minor parties; these political groups\, while claiming to be in opposition\, generally support the government’s policies. Major political parties considered to be part of the non-systemic opposition include Yabloko and the People’s Freedom Party (PARNAS)\, along with the unregistered party Russia of the Future and Libertarian Party of Russia (LPR). Other notable opposition groups included the Russian Opposition Coordination Council (KSO) (2012–2013) and The Other Russia (2006–2011)\, as well as various non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Their supporters vary in political ideology\, ranging from liberals\, socialists\, and anarchists\, to Russian nationalists. They are mainly unified by their opposition to Putin and government corruption. DESCRIPTION:De parlementaire enquête naar de aanpak van de coronapandemie is een parlementaire enquête van de Tweede Kamer die onderzoek zal doen naar de Nederlandse aanpak van de coronapandemie. \nOp 4 november 2021 nam de Tweede Kamer unaniem een motie van VVD-Kamerlid Aukje de Vries aan die opriep tot deze parlementaire enquête. Vanwege onenigheid over het onderzoeksvoorstel besloot de Tweede Kamervoorzitter Vera Bergkamp om de enquête uit te stellen. Na de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen van 22 november 2023 is door de Kamer unaniem besloten de enquête te starten. Op 30 januari 2024 ging de commissie van start. DESCRIPTION:Nederlanders met een migratieachtergrond hebben minder vertrouwen in de politiek en voelen zich vaker niet door de politiek vertegenwoordigd dan Nederlanders zonder een migratieachtergrond. \nDat blijkt uit dit onderzoek van het Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau (SCP). Mensen met een migratieachtergrond vinden vaak dat de politiek niet naar hen luistert en dat onderwerpen die zij belangrijk vinden worden gebagatelliseerd of aan de kant worden geschoven. Gevoelens van uitsluiting spelen hierbij een belangrijke rol: dat zij\, en de politici in wie zij zich herkennen en met wie zij zich identificeren\, politiek niet volwaardig meedoen en meetellen. De democratie functioneert optimaal als iedereen kan participeren\, gehoord en vertegenwoordigd wordt en dit ook zo ervaart. Het is dus zorgelijk als een grote groep Nederlanders het idee heeft dat de politiek er niet is ‘voor mensen zoals zij’ en minder geneigd te zijn te gaan stemmen. Er kan op die manier een vicieuze cirkel ontstaan: problemen van kiezersgroepen die minder participeren krijgen minder aandacht\, het gevoel er niet toe te doen wordt verder versterkt en dat leidt vervolgens tot een grotere ervaren kloof met de politiek en nog minder politieke aandacht.  Om dit te veranderen\, kan de politiek zelf een rol spelen. \nLinks:\nMensen met een migratieachtergrond voelen zich niet vertegenwoordigd door de politiek

SUMMARY:A sharp right turn: A forecast for the 2024 European Parliament elections - publication
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 European Parliament elections will see a major shift to the right in many countries\, with populist radical right parties gaining votes and seats across the EU\, and centre-left and green parties losing votes and seats. \nAnti-European populists are likely to top the polls in nine member states (Austria\, Belgium\, the Czech Republic\, France\, Hungary\, Italy\, the Netherlands\, Poland\, and Slovakia) and come second or third in a further nine countries (Bulgaria\, Estonia\, Finland\, Germany\, Latvia\, Portugal\, Romania\, Spain\, and Sweden). According to the forecast\, almost half the seats will be held by MEPs outside the “super grand coalition” of the three centrist groups. Inside the European Parliament\, a populist right coalition of Christian democrats\, conservatives\, and radical right MEPs could emerge with a majority for the first time. This ‘sharp right turn’ is likely to have significant consequences for European-level policies\, which will affect the foreign policy choices that the EU can make\, particularly on environmental issues\, where the new majority is likely to oppose ambitious EU action to tackle climate change. Far-right parties are becoming increasingly dominant in national settings across many EU capitals. Whether in election results\, such as the success of Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party (PVV) in the Dutch general election in November\, or in their ability to set the agenda from the opposition – such as the National Rally’s support for France’s regressive immigration bill in December – the far right played an important role in shaping European politics in 2023. \n2024 is likely to see a continuation of this trend not only in national politics\, but also at the European level\, with early polls suggesting a more right-leaning European Parliament will emerge after the June 2024 European Parliament elections. To determine how significant this shift could be and the effect it could have on the European Union’s policies and those of national governments\, we collected the most recent opinion polls in every EU member state and applied a statistical model of the performance of national parties in previous European Parliament elections\, building on a model we developed and used for the 2009\, 2014\, and 2019 elections. The results indicate that the European Parliament will likely take a sharp turn to the right after June 2024. While the parliament is not the most significant EU institution when it comes to foreign policy\, the way in which the political groups align after the elections\, and the impact that these elections have on national debates in member states\, will have significant implications for the European Commission’s and Council’s ability to make foreign policy choices\, most notably in implementing the next phase of the European Green Deal. \nLinks:\nA sharp right turn: A forecast for the 2024 European Parliament elections \n‘Wake-upcall’: denktank voorziet flinke ruk naar rechts bij verkiezingen Europees Parlement
