DESCRIPTION:Samen kleuren we in oktober 2026 Nederland rood als boodschap aan ons kabinet: geen geld\, geen steun voor genocide. \nGeen Nederlander wil medeplichtig zijn aan illegale bezetting en genocide. Steeds meer mensen spreken zich uit tegen Israëls voortdurende geweld in Palestina. Velen hangen posters voor onze ramen\, demonstreren op stations en vormden maar liefst 3 Rode Lijnen. Toch blijven onze leiders ons medeplichtig maken. De regering grijpt niet in en kijkt toe hoe Palestijnen vermoord worden\, hoe hun land wordt afgepakt en leeggeroofd. Nederlandse bedrijven en instellingen kunnen blijven investeren in bedrijven die de illegale bezetting van Palestina in stand houden. Wij kijken niet toe. Wij komen in actie. Heel oktober kleuren we Nederland rood – met als klap op de vuurpijl op 8 november een massademonstratie in Amsterdam. Tot elke politicus\, bestuurder en CEO onze boodschap heeft gehoord en besluit te handelen: geen wapens\, politieke steun of financiële steun voor illegale bezetting en genocide. De Dag is in 2010 in het leven geroepen\, en wordt inmiddels overal ter wereld gevierd. De daklozen krijgen op 10/10 extra aandacht om zo meer mogelijkheden te krijgen om te participeren binnen de maatschappij. Dit wordt gedaan door mensen te informeren\, en goede lokale initiatieven te vieren en te stimuleren. De Dag wordt gevierd door belangenorganisaties en instanties zoals het Leger des Heils of het Rode Kruis. SUMMARY:Symposium Harmful Policing
DESCRIPTION:The lethal violence being perpetrated by ICE in the United States and the death of a migrant worker in French police custody have caused widespread outrage and reinvigorated concerns about harmful policing and disproportionate uses of force. \nWhilst police violence is often viewed as a physical force\, the increased digitization of policing produces new forms of harm. By connecting both dimensions\, this symposium aims to contribute to the interplay between technology\, policing and harm. Research into ‘traditional’ forms of police violence tend to focus on physical force\, less-than-lethal weaponry\, crowd control and fatal incidents. The digitization of policing brings about the potential for a new range of harms\, such as through facial and speech recognition software\, algorithmic decision-making\, risk-profiling and online surveillance. Moreover\, the usage of digital technologies can influence discriminatory practices such as stop-and-searches and other traditional forms of police violence. Harmful policing manifests itself in a wide range of lived experiences and employs a diverse\, increasingly digitalizing\, set of methods and applications. In this symposium we explore the interactions between digital policing and physical manifestations of police violence\, and ask if our algorithmic society calls for redefining police violence and the use of force. How are people impacted by digital police violence? Does digital policing influence and intertwine with traditional modes of police violence and\, if so\, how? But also: which tools can foster police transparency and accountability that earn public trust and reduce harmful policing? The symposium is a prelude to an international exhibition on building public truths and fatal police violence in het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam\, opening in 2027. SUMMARY:Landelijk woonprotest 2026
DESCRIPTION:Op 10 oktober 2026 (Wereld Dakloze Mensen dag) organiseert de landelijke coalitie Woonopstand een opnieuw het Landelijke Woonprotest. \nBijna vijf jaar geleden kwamen 15.000 woningzoekenden en huurders af op de woondemonstraties in Rotterdam\, Den Haag en Amsterdam. Sindsdien zijn er verbeteringen geweest in het woonbeleid\, zoals uitbreiding van de huurprijsbescherming en meer vaste huurcontracten. Maar de woonproblemen zijn in al die jaren niet opgelost. Het woningtekort is opgelopen\, huurprijzen zijn verder gestegen en meer mensen zijn dakloos. Vijf jaar later zijn de huren nog hoger\, groeit de dakloosheid nog steeds en wordt wonen nog altijd behandeld als verdienmodel in plaats van een recht. Zo vinden studenten geen kamer en stellen starters kinderen uit vanwege gebrek aan een passende woning. Ondertussen kopen beleggers huizen blok voor blok op\, om grof geld te verdienen aan steeds hogere huren en huizenprijzen. En in plaats van onze huizen te beschermen tegen speculanten\, kiest dit kabinet voor de winst van speculanten boven ons thuis. En om zelf buiten schot te blijven\, wijst dit kabinet naar onze buren die hier uit andere landen kwamen. Niet toevallig is 10 oktober uitgekozen als datum\, het is dan namelijk Wereld Dakloze Mensen Dag. Dakloosheid is het meest schrijnende gevolg van de wooncrisis. DESCRIPTION:Op Coming-Outdag (Engels: Coming Out Day)\, die jaarlijks op 11 oktober plaatsvindt\, wordt aandacht besteed aan het uit de kast komen oftewel de coming-out; het moment dat (LHBT) mensen openlijk uitkomen voor hun seksuele geaardheid of genderidentiteit. Coming-Outdag vond voor het eerst plaats in 1988 in de Verenigde Staten en wordt sinds 2009 ook in Nederland gehouden. \nAnders dan de Gay Pride en Roze Zaterdag in Nederland en The Belgian Pride in België\, vindt op Coming-Outdag geen grote centrale viering plaats\, maar worden er in meerdere plaatsen kleinere activiteiten georganiseerd door lokale homo- en jongerenorganisaties\, al dan niet in samenwerking met heteroseksuele sympathisanten. \nDe Annie Brouwer-Korf prijs is onderdeel van het Utrecht Queer Culture Festival en wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt op 11 oktober\, Coming Out Dag. Annie Brouwer-Korf (1946-2017) was van 1999 tot 2008 burgemeester van Utrecht. In deze periode heeft zij zich in het bijzonder ingezet voor de rechten lhbtiqa+ personen in Utrecht en ver daarbuiten. Personen\, organisaties\, initiatieven of projecten die zich inzetten voor de acceptatie en zichtbaarheid van de Utrechtse lhbtiqa+ gemeenschap kunnen worden voorgedragen. DESCRIPTION:Every year on 14 October\, the world marks International E-Waste Day: a global initiative launched by the WEEE Forum to raise awareness about the growing challenge of electronic waste and to inspire action. \nFor its 9th edition\, International E-Waste Day 2026 turns the spotlight on Fast Tech: the small and inexpensive electronic products that have become part of everyday life. Fast Tech describes the expanding universe of low-cost electrical and electronic items that consumers purchase\, often on impulse\, and discard without a second thought. Think earphones bought at the airport\, fancy charging cables\, USB adapters\, LED string lights\, mini fans\, single use vapes\, toys and other type of gadgets. The term draws a deliberate parallel with fast fashion. Just as disposable clothing culture reshaped how people think about garments\, a comparable shift has taken place with small electronics. The result is a large and growing volume of items that exit everyday use each year\, the vast majority of which are never properly collected or recycled. Unlike large household appliances\, which consumers generally recognise as items requiring responsible end-of-life disposal\, Fast Tech products are rarely perceived as electronic waste. \nA broken pair of earphones is thrown in the general bin. A tangled charging cable ends up in a drawer\, forgotten. It is also one of fastest growing waste streams. According to Material Focus study\, in UK alone the total spend on Fast Tech has nearly quadrupled from £2.8bn in 2023 to £11.6bn in 2025 and the country has already binned over half of it’s Fast Tech: 589 pieces a year were uncorrectly disposed of. This means 11.3 million items every week or 19 items a second! The challenge is also structural. The rapid growth of online retail has made it easier than ever to purchase Fast Tech from platforms and sellers that may not be registered as producers under national WEEE legislation. When such a platform is not registered\, no recycling fee is paid\, the collection infrastructure is not funded\, and no take-back obligation is met\, leaving the cost of end-of-life management to be absorbed by national systems or\, more often\, left unaddressed entirely. On 14 October 2026\, the WEEE Forum and its member organisations invite consumers\, recyclers\, retailers\, regulators\, and civil society to focus on three practical steps: \n\nRecognise: every small device with a plug\, cable or a battery\, no matter how little or inexpensive\, is e-waste at the end of its life and requires proper treatment. Do not chuck it in the general bin.\nReturn: bring fast tech items to official collection points\, in-store take-back locations\, or dedicated e-waste drop-off sites. In the EU\, online retailers are legally obliged to accept small\, discarded electronics free of charge.\nDemand compliance: consumers and regulators alike should ensure that online platforms selling electronics are registered as producers and contribute to funded recycling systems. Non-compliance undermines the circular economy for all.\n\nInternational E-Waste Day was founded in 2018 by the WEEE Forum and takes place every year on 14 October. Ook andere (milieu-)organisaties schenken aandacht aan een gelijkere verdeling van voedsel over de wereld\, bijvoorbeeld door een wereldmaaltijd te serveren. Meer dan 840 miljoen mensen in de wereld hebben dagelijks niet genoeg voedsel en schoon drinkwater. In 2000 hebben regeringsleiders van alle landen van de wereld door middel van de Millenniumdoelstellingen afgesproken om de honger wereldwijd aan te pakken. Power belongs to the people\, but only if we use it. The No Kings protests are a series of decentralized protests\, mainly held in the United States\, opposing the actions\, policies\, and expansion of executive power under the second Donald Trump administration. Considered by many to be a grassroots and constitutional movement\, the No Kings protests garnered international media coverage and prompted discussions over democratic backsliding in the United States\, the separation of powers\, rule of law\, and the exercise of the First Amendment. Three nationwide No Kings protests have taken place thus far\, June 14\, 2025\, October 18\, 2025 and March 28\, 2026. The group also held a concert\, entitled “Rise Up\, Sing Out\,” on June 14\, 2026\, to compete with president Trump’s promotion of the America250 concert and the UFC Freedom 250 fight. The rationale for the No Kings protests began as a result of executive overreach during the second Trump administration. On February 19\, 2025\, the official White House X account posted an AI-generated image depicting Trump as a monarch on a falsified Time magazine cover. This was viewed by many of Trump’s political and media critics as a way in which Trump was flaunting ‘king’ rhetoric to further promote his expansion of executive power. Other points of interest\, including the mass layoffs of federal employees facilitated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)\, mass deportations of undocumented immigrants\, and incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers\, ignited public outrage. \nLinks:\nNo Kings \nThe next No Kings is right around the corner!

The 2026 concept note\, therefore\, calls for housing policies and systems that place human dignity\, human rights and people’s needs at their centre. For 2026\, the Day calls for action in three key areas: \n\nMake safe housing a human-rights priority: Respect\, protect and progressively fulfil the right to adequate housing\, and give a dignified standard of living the appropriate priority in public policy and budgeting.\nDesign policies with people experiencing poverty: Move beyond token consultation and involve people experiencing poverty and housing exclusion directly in the design\, implementation and evaluation of housing policies\, recognizing them as rights- and knowledge-holders.\nMobilize resources for safe homes for all: Strengthen public financing and other resources needed to expand access to safe\, accessible and affordable housing while ensuring that no one is left behind.\n\nThe 2026 focus also builds on the Doha Political Declaration (A/RES/80/5)\, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly following the Second World Summit for Social Development in November 2025.
