DESCRIPTION:Justice for Palestine verzoekt de Europese Commissie om bij de Raad een voorstel in te dienen voor de volledige opschorting van de associatieovereenkomst tussen de EU en Israël. \nVolgens de Europese Commissie (Europese Dienst voor extern optreden\, nota van het Bureau van de speciale vertegenwoordiger van de EU voor de mensenrechten\, 20 juni 2025) is de staat Israël verantwoordelijk voor een ongekend groot aantal doden en gewonden onder burgers\, grootschalige ontheemding en de systematische vernietiging van ziekenhuizen en medische voorzieningen in Gaza. Israël heeft ook een blokkade van humanitaire hulp ingesteld die zou kunnen neerkomen op hongersnood als oorlogsmethode. Israël schendt meerdere regels en verplichtingen uit hoofde van het internationaal recht en zorgt er niet voor dat het misdrijf genocide wordt voorkomen\, zoals het Internationaal Gerechtshof heeft bevolen. Toch heeft de Europese Unie haar associatieovereenkomst met Israël\, de hoeksteen van de bilaterale handels-\, economische en politieke samenwerking tussen de EU en Israël\, nog steeds niet opgeschort. DESCRIPTION:Zet je voornaam op het kaartje en we herinneren hem met z’n allen dat rechtvaardig klimaatbeleid kan én moet. \nGreenpeace is gestart met een massale kaartenactie om de premier in beweging te krijgen. In de hoop dat jij meedoet\, want de kans dat Nederland met dit beleid zijn klimaatdoelen haalt is nihil. Het klimaatbeleid bevat bijna geen effectieve oplossingen zoals woningisolatie\, een CO2-heffing voor de industrie\, krimp van de luchtvaart en de afschaffing van fossiele subsidies. In plaats daarvan kiest dit kabinet voor onzekere langetermijntechnologieën en verlaagt het zelfs de vliegbelasting. Met de kaartenactie herinneren we premier Jetten eraan dat rechtvaardig klimaatbeleid kan en moet. Hoe meer kaarten\, hoe beter! Met het klimaatbeleid van dit kabinet zijn we in 2040 nog steeds afhankelijk van fossiele energie en daarmee van fossiele landen zoals Rusland en Amerika. Het aandeel energie dat we in 2040 importeren aan olie en gas is minstens de helft tot 63%! Deze feiten staan in de infographic van de Klimaat- en Energieverkenning. SUMMARY:Scholieren protesten najaar 2026
DESCRIPTION:Scholieren in een voorstad van Parijs besloten 17 september de ingang van hun middelbare school te blokkeren\, zij wilden een vuist maken tegen de overvolle klassen en lange schooldagen. \nDe scholieren stonden er niet alleen voor; zij kregen bijval van leraren die hun zorgen uitten over het tekort aan personeel en materiaal\, en de hoge werkdruk. Franse middelbare scholieren maken verplicht meer lesuren dan hun leeftijdsgenoten in veel andere Europese landen. Daarnaast kampen veel Franse middelbare scholen met een tekort aan basisvoorzieningen zoals tafels en stoelen. Door een gebrek aan airconditioning lopen tijdens hittegolven de temperaturen in klaslokalen flink op\, terwijl het in de winter juist ijskoud kan zijn. Scholieren wijzen op achterstallig onderhoud\, wat leidt tot lekkende daken\, kakkerlakken en rattenoverlast\, zoals in Saint-Denis. Volgens actievoerders zijn die problemen vaak het grootst op scholen in sociaaleconomisch kwetsbare wijken. Ook Parcoursup\, het platform waarmee scholieren zich aanmelden voor een vervolgopleiding\, ligt onder vuur. Soms moeten scholieren maanden wachten totdat ze weten of ze worden toegelaten tot hun studie naar keuze. Volgens veel van hen zorgt het systeem voor onzekerheid en extra stress over hun toekomst. De eerste demonstratie verliep nog tamelijk gemoedelijk\, met een paar vuilnisbakken die in de fik vlogen. Maar via sociale media verspreidden de beelden ervan razendsnel en protesten sloegen over naar andere steden buiten Parijs. De beweging kreeg vrijwel direct steun van de radicaal-linkse partij La France Insoumise (LFI)\, die een sterke aanhang onder jongeren heeft. Die steun is electoraal gezien niet onbelangrijk\, omdat een deel van de scholieren volgend jaar voor het eerst mag stemmen bij de Franse presidentsverkiezingen. Rechtse politici beschuldigen de partij ervan het protest aan te wakkeren en te politiseren. Zo zei de LFI-burgemeester van Saint-Denis\, Bally Bagayoko\, dat geweld “in sommige gevallen gelegitimeerd is”. Die woorden\, die volgens Bagayoko uit hun context zijn gehaald\, leidden tot veel ophef. De centrumrechtse presidentskandidaat Bruno Retailleau vroeg zich af of LFI niet verboden zou moeten worden. \nLFI-leider Mélenchon stelt juist dat zijn partij de beweging enkel steunt en niet organiseert. Hij wil dat de demonstraties geweldloos verlopen en wijst op wat hij omschrijft als de “bruutheid” van de politie. Volgens hem maakten agenten veelvuldig gebruik van traangas en wapenstokken om demonstranten uiteen te drijven. Maandag 5 oktober 2026 raakte in de Franse stad Lens een 15-jarige scholier zijn hand kwijt nadat hij een flitsgranaat had opgeraapt die door de oproerpolitie was gegooid. Bijna 200 leerlingen en leraren (06-10-2026) zijn inmiddels gewond geraakt. Ondanks de ongeregeldheden blijven de demonstranten doorgaan. Op 6 oktober ging het dus om zeker 250.000 mensen die de straat op gingen. Volgens een van de vakbonden waren dat er zelfs 450.000. Zondag 4 oktober heeft premier Lecornu een brief geschreven waarin hij belooft deze week met concrete toezeggingen voor scholieren te komen\, onder meer om schoolgebouwen beter bestand te maken tegen de gevolgen van klimaatverandering. Daarnaast wordt in de begroting\, die nog door het parlement moet worden goedgekeurd\, 1\,2 miljard euro extra uitgetrokken voor het onderwijs. Ook kondigde hij aan dat op middelbare scholen tot en met vrijdag geen lessen gegeven worden in de hoop dat scholen en leerlingen dan met elkaar in gesprek gaan. Maar de angst is dat de geest inmiddels al uit de fles is en dat de protestbeweging kan uitgroeien tot een veel bredere volksbeweging. Dat komt ook doordat er in Frankrijk veel frustratie is over de hoge brandstofprijzen. DESCRIPTION:The lethal violence being perpetrated by ICE in the United States and the death of a migrant worker in French police custody have caused widespread outrage and reinvigorated concerns about harmful policing and disproportionate uses of force. \nWhilst police violence is often viewed as a physical force\, the increased digitization of policing produces new forms of harm. By connecting both dimensions\, this symposium aims to contribute to the interplay between technology\, policing and harm. Research into ‘traditional’ forms of police violence tend to focus on physical force\, less-than-lethal weaponry\, crowd control and fatal incidents. The digitization of policing brings about the potential for a new range of harms\, such as through facial and speech recognition software\, algorithmic decision-making\, risk-profiling and online surveillance. Moreover\, the usage of digital technologies can influence discriminatory practices such as stop-and-searches and other traditional forms of police violence. Harmful policing manifests itself in a wide range of lived experiences and employs a diverse\, increasingly digitalizing\, set of methods and applications. In this symposium we explore the interactions between digital policing and physical manifestations of police violence\, and ask if our algorithmic society calls for redefining police violence and the use of force. How are people impacted by digital police violence? Does digital policing influence and intertwine with traditional modes of police violence and\, if so\, how? But also: which tools can foster police transparency and accountability that earn public trust and reduce harmful policing? The symposium is a prelude to an international exhibition on building public truths and fatal police violence in het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam\, opening in 2027. DESCRIPTION:Op 10 oktober 2026 (Wereld Dakloze Mensen dag) organiseert de landelijke coalitie Woonopstand een opnieuw het Landelijke Woonprotest. \nBijna vijf jaar geleden kwamen 15.000 woningzoekenden en huurders af op de woondemonstraties in Rotterdam\, Den Haag en Amsterdam. Sindsdien zijn er verbeteringen geweest in het woonbeleid\, zoals uitbreiding van de huurprijsbescherming en meer vaste huurcontracten. Maar de woonproblemen zijn in al die jaren niet opgelost. Het woningtekort is opgelopen\, huurprijzen zijn verder gestegen en meer mensen zijn dakloos. Vijf jaar later zijn de huren nog hoger\, groeit de dakloosheid nog steeds en wordt wonen nog altijd behandeld als verdienmodel in plaats van een recht. Zo vinden studenten geen kamer en stellen starters kinderen uit vanwege gebrek aan een passende woning. Ondertussen kopen beleggers huizen blok voor blok op\, om grof geld te verdienen aan steeds hogere huren en huizenprijzen. En in plaats van onze huizen te beschermen tegen speculanten\, kiest dit kabinet voor de winst van speculanten boven ons thuis. En om zelf buiten schot te blijven\, wijst dit kabinet naar onze buren die hier uit andere landen kwamen. Niet toevallig is 10 oktober uitgekozen als datum\, het is dan namelijk Wereld Dakloze Mensen Dag. Dakloosheid is het meest schrijnende gevolg van de wooncrisis. DESCRIPTION:Every year on 14 October\, the world marks International E-Waste Day: a global initiative launched by the WEEE Forum to raise awareness about the growing challenge of electronic waste and to inspire action. \nFor its 9th edition\, International E-Waste Day 2026 turns the spotlight on Fast Tech: the small and inexpensive electronic products that have become part of everyday life. Fast Tech describes the expanding universe of low-cost electrical and electronic items that consumers purchase\, often on impulse\, and discard without a second thought. Think earphones bought at the airport\, fancy charging cables\, USB adapters\, LED string lights\, mini fans\, single use vapes\, toys and other type of gadgets. The term draws a deliberate parallel with fast fashion. Just as disposable clothing culture reshaped how people think about garments\, a comparable shift has taken place with small electronics. The result is a large and growing volume of items that exit everyday use each year\, the vast majority of which are never properly collected or recycled. Unlike large household appliances\, which consumers generally recognise as items requiring responsible end-of-life disposal\, Fast Tech products are rarely perceived as electronic waste. \nA broken pair of earphones is thrown in the general bin. A tangled charging cable ends up in a drawer\, forgotten. It is also one of fastest growing waste streams. According to Material Focus study\, in UK alone the total spend on Fast Tech has nearly quadrupled from £2.8bn in 2023 to £11.6bn in 2025 and the country has already binned over half of it’s Fast Tech: 589 pieces a year were uncorrectly disposed of. This means 11.3 million items every week or 19 items a second! The challenge is also structural. The rapid growth of online retail has made it easier than ever to purchase Fast Tech from platforms and sellers that may not be registered as producers under national WEEE legislation. When such a platform is not registered\, no recycling fee is paid\, the collection infrastructure is not funded\, and no take-back obligation is met\, leaving the cost of end-of-life management to be absorbed by national systems or\, more often\, left unaddressed entirely. On 14 October 2026\, the WEEE Forum and its member organisations invite consumers\, recyclers\, retailers\, regulators\, and civil society to focus on three practical steps: \n\nRecognise: every small device with a plug\, cable or a battery\, no matter how little or inexpensive\, is e-waste at the end of its life and requires proper treatment. Do not chuck it in the general bin.\nReturn: bring fast tech items to official collection points\, in-store take-back locations\, or dedicated e-waste drop-off sites. In the EU\, online retailers are legally obliged to accept small\, discarded electronics free of charge.\nDemand compliance: consumers and regulators alike should ensure that online platforms selling electronics are registered as producers and contribute to funded recycling systems. Non-compliance undermines the circular economy for all.\n\nInternational E-Waste Day was founded in 2018 by the WEEE Forum and takes place every year on 14 October. Considered by many to be a grassroots and constitutional movement\, the No Kings protests garnered international media coverage and prompted discussions over democratic backsliding in the United States\, the separation of powers\, rule of law\, and the exercise of the First Amendment. Three nationwide No Kings protests have taken place thus far\, June 14\, 2025\, October 18\, 2025 and March 28\, 2026. The group also held a concert\, entitled “Rise Up\, Sing Out\,” on June 14\, 2026\, to compete with president Trump’s promotion of the America250 concert and the UFC Freedom 250 fight. The rationale for the No Kings protests began as a result of executive overreach during the second Trump administration. On February 19\, 2025\, the official White House X account posted an AI-generated image depicting Trump as a monarch on a falsified Time magazine cover. DESCRIPTION:Global Media and Information Literacy Week is an annual event observed from 24th to 31st October to raise awareness and celebrate the progress achieved towards Media and Information Literacy for all. \nDuring Global Media and Information Literacy Week\, stakeholders around the world organize events and UNESCO co-hosts with a Member State the global conference gathering the Media and Information Literacy community. In 2021\, the UN General Assembly decided to commemorate Global Media and Information Literacy Week\, to emphasize the need for factual\, timely\, targeted\, clear\, accessible\, multilingual and science-based information. The resolution acknowledges that the significant digital divide and data disparities between countries and within them\, can be addressed in part by enhancing people’s competencies to seek\, receive and share information in the digital realm. “>Media and Information Literacy encompasses various competencies that enable individuals and groups to navigate today’s information and communications environment. It covers a large spectrum of knowledge\, skills\, attitudes and values to better search\, access\, critically evaluate\, use and contribute to information and media content.Thereby\, Media and Information Literacy enables the purposeful and creative use of digital technology and empowers all users through enhancing their knowledge of their online and digital rights\, as well of the ethical issues surrounding access to and use of information. Media and information literate citizens are equipped to engage more effectively in dialogue\, freedom of expression\, access to information\, gender equality\, diversity\, peace\, and sustainable development.
