DESCRIPTION:Het Amerikaanse IT-bedrijf Kyndryl wil Solvinity overnemen\, het bedrijf dat de gegevens van DigiD beheert\, en experts waarschuwen: bij een overname kunnen jouw persoonsgegevens in handen komen van de Amerikaanse overheid. \nPersoonsgegevens in handen van de VS van Trump kunnen leiden tot serieuze gevolgen. Niet alleen kan Trump druk zetten op de Nederlandse overheid. Mensen worden aan de Amerikaanse grens al actief geweigerd op basis van wat er op hun telefoon staat\, en juist trans personen\, queer mensen\, wetenschappers en activisten lopen extra risico. Kyndryl kan straks worden gedwongen om jouw DigiD-gegevens af te staan aan een regering die deze informatie inzet tegen kritische stemmen. Stuur met één klik een mail naar het Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken. Je doet daarin een beroep op je rechten onder de Algemene Verordening Gegevensbescherming (AVG): je vraagt inzage in jouw persoonsgegevens en wilt weten welke maatregelen het ministerie neemt om jouw privacy te beschermen bij deze overname. Hoe meer mensen deze mail sturen\, hoe duidelijker het signaal: onze gegevens horen niet onder Amerikaanse zeggenschap. Het ministerie moet dit verzoek binnen één maand beantwoorden\, voor iedereen die mailt. DESCRIPTION:Miljoenen van ons zien wat er zich in de Verenigde Staten afspeelt: agenten die mensen in het holst van de nacht van hun bed lichten en families op straat van elkaar scheiden. \nBuren staan onder shock en kunnen slechts vol afgrijzen toekijken. Een echo gaat het hele land door: de doffe dreunen van agenten die op de deur bonzen. Het geluid waar je bloed van bevriest. Stel je voor dat dit ook bij jou in de straat gebeurt. Op dit moment overweegt Europa ditzelfde pad op te gaan. Over vijf dagen komen regeringsleiders van de EU samen om een plan te ondertekenen dat rechtstreeks van Trumps wensenlijstje lijkt te komen. Een plan waarmee de overheid veel makkelijker bij mensen thuis kan binnendringen\, huiszoekingen kan doen en ze naar landen kan uitzetten waar ze nog nooit een voet hebben gezet. Onze politici hebben hier haast bij – ze hopen dat we zoet en stil blijven terwijl zij hun macht uitbreiden en nieuwkomers de schuld geven voor problemen waar zij niets aan willen doen. Maar ze hopen tevergeefs. Dit is precies het moment waarop mensen zoals wij van ons laten horen\, luid en duidelijk. Op zulke momenten kunnen ze niet anders dan naar ons luisteren. Wij kunnen hier iets aan doen. SUMMARY:Klokkenluider DigiD geschorst - petitie
DESCRIPTION:Pieter van Oordt\, Chief Privacy Officer binnen de Nederlandse rijksoverheid\, speelde een centrale rol in het tegenhouden van de Amerikaanse overname van DigiD. \nHij voorkwam dat het Amerikaanse bedrijf Kyndryl het cloudbedrijf achter DigiD (Solvinity) kon overnemen voor €100 miljoen. Daarmee beschermde hij de privacy van miljoenen burgers\, de digitale onafhankelijkheid van de Europese Unie en de controle over vitale overheidsdiensten. In plaats van bescherming kreeg Van Oordt tegenwerking. Hij werd uitgesloten van vergaderingen\, zijn salarisverhoging werd geblokkeerd en zijn verzoek om bescherming onder de Europese Klokkenluidersrichtlijn werd afgewezen\, ondanks een deskundigenrapport dat bevestigt dat hij wél bescherming had moeten krijgen. Inmiddels is hij geschorst en is op 22 mei 2026 zijn ontslag in een schriftelijk bericht van de landsadvocaat genoemd. Het ontslag is nog niet uitgevoerd. Deze zaak toont hoe kwetsbaar digitale soevereiniteit is en hoe moeilijk het is voor klokkenluiders binnen de overheid om bescherming te krijgen. DESCRIPTION:By Albinfo – Own work\, CC BY 4.0\nOp 23 mei 2026 begonnen anti-regeringsprotesten in het Albanese dorp Zvërnec\, nabij de Narta-lagune\, de protesten\, die in de volksmond bekend werden als de Flamingorevolutie / Flamingo Revolution (Albanees: Revolucioni Flamingove)\, werden ingegeven door de manier waarop de overheid omging met de voorbereidende werkzaamheden en de voorgestelde luxe toeristische ontwikkelingen in het kader van het eiland Sazan en het resortproject in Zvërnec\, gesteund door de Amerikaanse investeerder Jared Kushner. \nDemonstranten en lokale bewoners protesteerden niet alleen tegen de voorgestelde ontwikkeling\, maar ook tegen wat zij omschreven als een corrupt en ondoorzichtig proces met betrekking tot beschermde gebieden\, betwiste grondeigendom\, niet-gepubliceerde of betwiste vergunningen\, particuliere beveiliging en beperkte publieke raadpleging. Na geweld tegen demonstranten tijdens een protest nabij de projectlocatie op 30 mei\, breidde de beweging zich de volgende dag uit naar Tirana en later naar andere steden in Albanië\, Kosovo en naar gemeenschappen van de Albanese diaspora in het buitenland. Het bouwproject en de steun van de overheid daaraan vormden een belangrijk bron van onvrede en grieven onder de bevolking. Hoewel de beweging aanvankelijk gericht was tegen de ontwikkeling van het resort\, breidde het protest zich uit tot een bredere oppositie tegen de regering van premier Edi Rama\, tegen corruptie\, staatsgreep\, beïnvloeding van de media\, slecht bestuur en de achteruitgang van de democratie. De demonstranten eisten het aftreden van Rama\, een anticorruptieonderzoek door de Speciale Structuur tegen Corruptie en Georganiseerde Misdaad (SPAK)\, een bouwverbod in beschermde gebieden\, de intrekking of herziening van het kader voor strategische investeerders en de annulering of herziening van de contracten voor het resort. Veel demonstraties bekritiseerden ook oppositieleider Sali Berisha en de Democratische Partij van Albanië\, waarbij Rama en Berisha afgeschilderd werden als onderdeel van hetzelfde politieke establishment. De belangrijkste protesten concentreerden zich in Tirana\, met name rond het Skanderbegplein\, het kantoor van de premier\, de Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit\, het parlement en andere symbolische openbare ruimtes. \nDagelijkse demonstraties trokken tienduizenden deelnemers\, terwijl op 10\, 13 en 20 juni grotere\, landelijke en op de diaspora gerichte mobilisaties plaatsvonden. Het protest van 20 juni was tot nu toe de grootste demonstratie van de beweging. Albanese media schatten het aantal deelnemers op meer dan 250.000 en beschreven de menigte als een massale bijeenkomst op de Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit\, van het Skanderbegplein tot het Moeder Teresaplein. De beweging wordt omschreven als gedecentraliseerd\, met jongeren van generatie Z en millennials die een prominente rol spelen\, naast maatschappelijke organisaties\, milieuactivisten\, lokale bewoners\, publieke figuren en diaspora-gemeenschappen. De flamingo‘s\, een wilde vogel die leeft in het moerasgebied Vjosa Narta\, werd het belangrijkste symbool van de demonstraties en gaf aanleiding tot de naam Flamingorevolutie. Demonstranten gebruikten flamingo-uitbeeldingen\, opblaasbare flamingo’s\, nationale vlaggen en aangepaste protestbeelden om zowel milieubescherming als breder burgerlijk verzet te symboliseren. De nationale media\, zoals Top Channel\, Vision+ en Klan TV\, bagatelliseerden de omvang van de protesten. Ondertussen verdedigde Rama het project als een grote buitenlandse investering\, verwierp hij beschuldigingen van onrechtmatig gedrag en portretteerde hij delen van de beweging als beïnvloed door desinformatie\, buitenlandse belangen of een bredere “hybride oorlog”. Zijn reactie\, samen met Berisha’s aanvankelijke steun voor het project\, werd onderdeel van de bredere kritiek van de demonstranten op de Albanese politieke klasse. De protesten in Albanië werden ook bijgewoond door buitenlandse toeristen\, die hun solidariteit met de demonstranten betuigden. DESCRIPTION:Bij tabak\, alcohol en gokken zegt de overheid ons te willen beschermen\, maar bij junkfood is het opeens onze “eigen keuze”. \nDit terwijl de junkfood-industrie ons eetgedrag bewust beïnvloed met reclames. Reclame is geen onschuldige keuze-informatie. Bedrijven steken er niet voor niets zoveel geld in: het werkt. Kinderen zijn daar al helemaal niet tegen opgewassen. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk liet zien dat bijvoorbeeld een overdags verbod op junkfoodreclame echt verschil maakt. De voedingsindustrie boekt recordwinsten\, en de zorgkosten betalen wij met z’n allen. De overheid verzaakt haar plicht om de volksgezondheid te beschermen (Grondwet artikel 22). Wie zich uitspreekt\, krijgt te horen: als je niet loyaal bent\, moet je maar weggaan. De rechtsstaat moet beter beschermd worden tegen politieke partijen die haar actief ondermijnen. DESCRIPTION:The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)\, or the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty\, is the first legally binding international agreement to prohibit nuclear weapons\, with the ultimate goal being their total elimination. \nIt was adopted on 7 July 2017\, opened for signature on 20 September 2017\, and entered into force on 22 January 2021. For those states that are party to it\, the treaty prohibits the development\, testing\, production\, stockpiling\, stationing\, transfer\, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons\, as well as assistance and encouragement to the prohibited activities. For nuclear-armed states joining the treaty\, it provides for a time-bound framework for negotiations leading to the verified and irreversible elimination of its nuclear weapons programme. A mandate adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 23 December 2016 scheduled two sessions for negotiations: 27 to 31 March and 15 June to 7 July 2017. The treaty passed on schedule on 7 July with 122 in favour\, 1 against (Netherlands)\, and 1 official abstention (Singapore). States that have joined the treaty are typically also members of nuclear-weapon-free zones. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Ankara Summit is a future meeting of heads of state and heads of government of NATO member states\, scheduled to be held in Ankara\, Turkey\, on 7–8 July 2026. \nIt will be the 36th NATO summit and the second hosted by Turkey following the 2004 summit in Istanbul. The summit will be take place at the Presidential Complex. The Governorship of Ankara announced a comprehensive ban on all rallies\, demonstrations\, and leaflet distributions across the province\, effective from 28 June to 10 July 2026. Extensive security measures led to the closure of several main arteries to traffic\, and administrative leave was granted to certain public personnel for the duration of the event. In the two weeks leading up to the summit\, anti-NATO protests took place in several cities\, including Istanbul\, Ankara\, and Izmir. Demonstrations led by labor unions and various non-governmental organizations opposed increased military budgets and NATO’s expansion policies. According to reports from Human Rights Watch (HRW) and local rights advocates\, anti-terror operations and crackdowns targeting protesters resulted in the detention of over 200 individuals\, including activists\, lawyers\, and journalists. \nLinks:\nNATO Summit 2026

SUMMARY:48th session of the World Heritage Committee 2026
DESCRIPTION:The World Heritage Committee meets once a year for an ordinary session to discuss the management of existing World Heritage Sites\, and accept nominations by countries. \nExtraordinary meetings can be convened at the request of two-thirds of the state members. Meetings are held within the territory of state members of the World Heritage Committee at their invitation. Rotation between regions and cultures is a consideration for selection and the location for the next session is chosen by the committee at the end of each session. The World Heritage Committee is a committee of the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization that selects the sites to be listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites\, including the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger\, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States Parties. It comprises representatives from 21 state parties that are elected by the General Assembly of States Parties for a four-year term. These parties vote on decisions and proposals related to the World Heritage Convention and World Heritage List. According to the World Heritage Convention\, a committee member’s term of office is six years. DESCRIPTION:World Drowning Prevention Day\, declared through the April 2021 UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/75/273 “Global drowning prevention”\, is held annually on 25 July. \nThis global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and to offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. All stakeholders – governments\, UN agencies\, civil society organizations\, the private sector\, academia and individuals – are invited to mark World Drowning Prevention Day by highlighting the need for urgent\, coordinated and multi-sectoral action on proven measures such as: \n\ninstalling barriers controlling access to water;\nproviding safe places away from water such as crèches for pre-school children with capable childcare;\nteaching swimming\, water safety and safe rescue skills;\ntraining bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation;\nsetting and enforcing safe boating\, shipping and ferry regulations;\nimproving flood risk management.\n\nThe UN General Assembly resolution invited WHO to coordinate actions on drowning prevention within the UN system. In this capacity\, WHO leads preparations for World Drowning Prevention Day by producing related advocacy materials\, hosting a global launch event and supporting national and local activities in countries and communities around the world. Every year\, an estimated 236\,000 people drown\, making drowning a major public health problem worldwide. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death globally for children and young people aged 1-24 years. DESCRIPTION:The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be hosted by Mongolia in its capital city\, Ulaanbaatar\, from 17 to 28 August 2026. \nThis landmark global event will bring together delegates from 197 Parties\, heads of state\, ministers\, representatives from international organizations\, scientific communities\, civil society\, and the private sector to forge solutions to the interconnected challenges of desertification\, land degradation and drought. Mongolia\, with a vast territory of 1.56 million square kilometers\, is experiencing land degradation across approximately 76.9 per cent of its land. Recognizing the critical role of land management in addressing the triple environmental crisis\, the country has become a key voice in global efforts to combat desertification and enhance land resilience. Mongolia’s ambitious development agendas—particularly its interconnected national movements on environment and agriculture—position the country as a strategic host for COP17 of the UNCCD. COP17 will be convened in alignment with the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026)\, offering a crucial global opportunity to highlight sustainable rangeland management and the needs of more than one billion people who directly depend on these vital ecosystems for their livelihoods. During the two-week conference\, participants will engage in a high-level segment that includes ministerial dialogues\, along with multi-stakeholder forums and thematic discussions on science–policy integration\, innovation\, solutions\, technology\, and financing.
